  • A start to finish look at what goes into making a pair of all mountain skis. I got to work over the summer in my garage. Now winter is rounding the corner, ski resorts are opening their ribbons of death, so its time to break them out! Still have plenty of room for improvement but super stoked how these turned out. Thanks for watching!!

    Really good video!, i am currently researching so that i can make my first pair of skis as a college project and i have seen some people say that you should do the lay up flat and then put it in the press, but others have done the lay up in the press like you, is there a right way to do it, or doesnt it matter too much?

      Thanks! It doesn't matter too much. I do it right in the press to reduce the chance of the layers shifting around. But if you use vacuum bags or have a more featured mold I bet you would fine to do it wherever.

    A couple of questions if you don’t mind 😁
    1. How does that full side wall work for you? Does it make the ski a lot stiffer? My pair of salomon qst 92s are wonderful for the French Alps, but I’d love a more playful pair for when I know it’s a resort kind of day.
    2. Any comments on fibreglass vs carbon and flax? Doesn’t make any sense in watersports composites, like at all, as the properties are so different the combination has no benefit + flax soaks resin
    3. Is there an open source modeling software out there with some free templates?

    • @redbarrelskis3361
      @redbarrelskis3361  2 года назад

      1) The full length sidewall doesn't really make the ski a lot stiffer. It helps with edge hold and preventing edge compression mainly.
      2) Hmm, I've added carbon to some skis. It can help stiffen them up, but at a cost. I usually add just a few strips lengthwise, or some diagonal patterns for torsional stiffness if its a carving ski. I'm always happy with my fiberglass skis, very competitive in weight with major brands, great performance too.
      3) I use Fusion 360. Not open source, but last I checked its free for hobbyist and small business. I think free runs out after a year or two though. I model everything flat, so in theory you could tons of different non 3d applications.
      Cheers!

    great vids! Ive enjoyed them all. What is that strip you lay down length wise over the adhered edges before you start laying up your fiberglass?

      Thanks man, glad you liked them! They are rubber vibration dampening strips, you can buy them from places like SkiLab.com or snowboardmaterials.com

    Well done.
    I'm curious where you buy all the materials you use. Base, edges, etc

      @redbarrelskis3361  2 года назад +2

      Thanks! You can get most anything from Skilab.com and snowboardmaterials.com. Its about $200 in materials per pair, not including shipping and consumables (saw blades, sanding disks...)

    Buddy this is great stuff. I have seen some of your others. Do you actually hand route the core thickness?

    • @redbarrelskis3361

      Yeah I do. I tried the sled through a planer technique awhile back. Lost a couple nice cores to that process and haven't gone back. May revisit someday... Cheers!

    I've enjoyed your video especially those where you discussed or explained specific areas of your building process thanks. Just a picky suggestion for you to consider next time when filming on the chair lift to try and capture it with the party bar down. Cheers looking forward to your next one.

    Hey there! I was just curious what the last cylindrical sanding machine was called.

    • @redbarrelskis3361
      @redbarrelskis3361  Год назад

      Thats a base grinder. Technically its a 300mm wide wet belt sander with a autofeed wheel.

    What material did you use to hold your skis down to mold during your layup?

    • @redbarrelskis3361
      @redbarrelskis3361  Год назад +1

      I use the leftover chunks of plastic (from cutting out the bases) to hold the parts side to side/front to back in the mold. Up and down is just gravity/pressure.

    Hi mate, nice job, as usual. Which type of glue do you use to attach the sise walls to the core please ? Thanks a lot

    • @jdritchey5773
      @jdritchey5773 2 года назад

      Thanks! I just use 5 minute epoxy. I let it set for 10-15minutes before removing from clamps. Then usually wait overnight before running through the planer and core profile jig.

    Hi again, You use your router to chamfer the side walls. Which angle please ? Is the device (washer ?) at the end of your bit made by yourself ?
    Thanks

    • @jdritchey5773
      @jdritchey5773 2 года назад

      Yup, you got it, that’s how I finish my sidewall. It’s a 10 degree bit. I added that washer. Also I swapped the bearing for a slimmer one, about double the height of the edge. Good luck!

      @@jdritchey5773 ok. Your washer is a plastic one? Did you print it?

    • @jdritchey5773
      @jdritchey5773 2 года назад

      @@jeromemazet8090 It is a metal washer. I think a #4 fender washer. Also, I just checked, there's a small washer between the bearing and fender washer so the bearing can still rotate.
