From Our Archive - In this video in the cell pods of a large juvenile detention center, our cameras camped out in the control unit of the cell pod as a new Detention Officer talked to us about life on the job in the girls unit. As girls played cards and hung out in the background, we talked to the Officer about the realities of the job and the difference working with teen girls vs. teen boys. She discussed the types of spats girls tended to get into, the discussions she had with girls in her care, and what she hoped the public would understand about kids who land in detention.
Following our time in the girls cell pod, our cameras caught up with a Juvenile Detective from a local police department who was at the detention center following the arrest of a few kids. The officer talked to us about what it was like to work the streets with juveniles, a recent case that involved vandalism of numerous cars, the challenges a lot of the kids faced at home, and why kids often turned to gangs for "fake love."

Jail for pulling a fire alarm at school? Surely that cannot be! What a monumental waste of resources.

Unfortunately it’s gotta be more than just a fire alarm. I honestly don’t believe that. I do agree probably lots of the kids are in the system running away from group homes not going to school and fights etc. system needs to change. Just a revolving door.

@Nurse Julie - Sadly, we do see a lot of the revolving door issue. :(

@@nursejulie3636 this was awhile ago..I'm sure a first offense they not just locking kids up..but to put a child in jail for being a runaway is ridiculous..they used to have a youth shelter in NJ where if u werr a runaway u got sent there and if u were in the mail and had really good reports they sent u across the street to the shelter and they could wear street clothes get visits all the time and they took the kids to the movies and to the beach 6 flags etc..alot of these kids are from broken homes and mom works 2 jobs n dad is put the picture and can't give 100% attention bcuz shes so busy trying to provide a home and probly has younger kids..they start hanging w wrong crowds and then the trouble starts

I never got in any major trouble for anything of high degree felonies, as a juvenile they always had me in these places. I always thought the ’petty crime don’t fit the bill’…. It’s all about money that’s the truth.

Y'all should go to Spring Creek Youth Services Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It's a nightmare. Or, it was in the early 2000's when I was there at 16 years old. It's ran in military fashion, being the Springs is where Ft. Carson Army Base, The Air Force Academy & base, etc. is. A lot of the facilities I've seen featured on here seem like a cake walk in comparison.

Most cases are not like mine. I come from a cultural background that values family and discipline. What I did was I trusted the wrong people, made some horrible decisions, and then I faced the consequences. Just going once is enough for me to learn not to make those mistakes again. It never stops haunting me, I sometimes feel like a stain on my family for it and I will do everything necessary to make up for it as much as possible.

@yuerenfeng6323 - Don't be too hard on yourself. Young people make mistakes. It's part of learning and growing. You clearly learned from whatever mistake you made and now you know you never want to experience that again. Be proud of that. It shows maturity!

4:15 So why in the hell do rape victims get locked up for running away?
Are the rapists in prison? Or are those cases too hard for the state to handle? Do the traumatized victims become the low hanging fruit and the easy target for the state to victimize all over again to try to look tough?
If so, what goes around should come back around. If bullies in government want to live by that sword, then they should die by that sword.
