Why is the USA Putting its Kids in Jail? | Witness | HD American Prison School Crime Documentary

  • It’s the only nation in the world that has not signed the International Convention on the Rights of the Child: the United States. Signing would mean relaxing legislation on the confinement of minors. Indeed, several American states still sentence minors to years, sometimes even life, in prison. The situation is worse than ever before: 70,000 minors are currently in American prisons, some in juvenile prisons, others in adult centres.
To protect them from their fellow inmates, the prison administration often keeps them in isolation for months or even years. Several cases are particularly disturbing, such as that of Khalief Browder, accused of stealing a backpack. He committed suicide after finally being released after 2 years in pre-trial detention. Our reporter gained access inside some such ‘juvies’, and met with minors in the system. In Utah, the authorities are rethinking the conditions of detaining minors. In Texas, on the other hand, the principle is simple: major crime, major penalty. No excuses.
This film reveals why so many minors end up behind bars, the main reason being the judicialization of society. Even in schools, police officers - not supervisors - now patrol the hallways. As a result, school-based misconduct has become a crime, sending students straight into the criminal system.
This documentary was first released in 2019.

I'm from the UK and then the EU, but live in the States now. First, the "Life" in countries such as the UK and Canada can mean 20-30 years. If the perp committed a particularly vile crime, a whole Life term would be applied. So, the lengths of your sentences for every crime are draconian, compared to many other advanced countries. Reagan closing the State hospitals, due to budget reasons, and the mad idea that people in them were malingering, is another, massive problem, that cannot be understated.
Here, I see children under the age of ten being cuffed, because they act out in school, or peed in a public setting. Once a child has gone through that, and labeled a criminal, the chance of their somehow rising above the cradle to jail pipeline is slim to none.
I have volunteered in prisons. One example I'd like to offer is a woman I met had a terrible problem with heroin, and ended up in the jail I helped in. She got sober, which is hard to do in prison, and she was bright eyed and clear headed. She wanted out so badly, that she opted to go to to a half-way, sober living house. The State/system required that she be on Methadone, before they would accept her for that programme. Before she was released, I could see the difference in her eyes, and within a few months, she ended up leaving the programme and losing touch with me.
Yes, she could have stayed in jail. The rooms were crowded, with bunks crammed together, and I understand her desire to be out. Had there been a better system in place, the whole Methadone BS could have been skipped. Would she have remained sober? Who knows. But, she had a better chance without the State requiring that crap be put in her clean and sober body, IMNSHO.
Are the places I lived better? I'm not claiming they are. I AM saying that these are a couple of reasons that I see for the mass incarceration rates. You can add in the cheap labour they provide, the profits and jobs they create for communities and investors, but I am not versed in those areas.
EDIT: One more thing; I've watched a lot of documentaries on crime and punishment, and have heard more than one person on Death Row say that the DP doesn't deter, because that's not what they are thinking of at the time of their act. And most criminals don't think they'll get caught...they believe they are smarter, which is one reason why so many talk, even though they have the right not to. Cheers.

I agree as these heavy handed prison sentences against youth offenders would not happen in any other civilized country unless their crimes were grievous in nature.
In my country, Canada, consequences for youth offenders are regulated under their Youth Criminal Justice Act.
For youth convicted of minor offences, penalties include probation, discharge, or Community Supervision.
Usually, a Restorative Justice type model is used for sentencing as opposed to dealing with the courts.
However, youth who commit serious crimes and sentenced to at least two years and no more than 10 years imprisonment serve their time in a Youth Correctional Facility and then transfer to Adult jails once he/she turns 18.
If a youth committed a serious crime and it grievous in nature, a Judge can try and sentence a kid as an adult, and can receive an adult sentence, such as Life Imprisonment for 1st Degree Murder or 2nd Degree Murder.

I never tolerated any craziness with my kids and neither did my parents I was very strict and my repair makes mistakes of course but you learn from mistakes cuz you don't want your child making that mistake I would think I would do anything for both my kids even to this day if my oldest was to come and say mom I needed this I would say let me see what I can do they're my babies and real parents don't want to see their kids get into any sort of trouble that's why they should be raised properly and put foot down when they're young so they know Mom and Daddy ain't dealing with it My ex-husband was the lean back type of person that thought he was everything because he became a firefighter He got real nasty I was strict the parent... ❤ God bless these kids hopefully they pull life together n learn from jail The hard way but the parents should have did it the easy way when they were little to raise them proper This breaks my heart no matter what kids are going to be kids but it's a shame that they have to go through all this because of their own parents not wanting to step up as damn parent THIS PISSES ME OFF W PARENTS TODAY😢

I've been hollering for years that everything about our "public education " system screams "we are treating you like a prisoner, and getting you ready for prison". From everything to the facade and make up of the newest built buildings, to the assumed guilt of petty "offenses" (such as disagreeing with a teacher), to the awful food, to the cops that roam the halls ready to bust a kid for anything and nothing. This is what happens when the prison system is FOR PROFIT. We need to bring it to the USA. Then, we can have help staffing the armed forces, college can be made a lot more accessible through the GI bill, and reduce the cost of health insurance nationwide. Armed forces employees are tricare/champus/champva military health insurance. Then, they will benefit from already having earned their health insurance from the armed forces and make it easier to not stress about getting a job with health insurance. They also benefit greatly from already having established a work history. There's many benefits to this line of thinking. I thumbs up your comment in agreement ❤.

There are too many students for the principal to manage. The building is too big to properly secure. The police presence is far greater than what you'd have at a college. Offenses that should result in expulsion are handled with police action. The teachers are nowhere to be seen but the cops are handling student discipline.

Teens should never be put in adult prisons. If they commit a crime they should pay but not in a prison with grown men.

Why are these kids killing other kids
    And armed robberies/ carjacking
    They are committing adult crimes..
    Not petty theft

When i was 23 i was locked up in a small city jail here in lousiana. They put a 17 year old in there with us. He was in there for doing donuts at the local high schools grass at 2 in the moring. His parents left him in there for 48 hours. Whike in there his shoes were taken right off his feet by an older inmate. They mentaly tortured this poor kid to the point he was crying. I kind of helped him out a little and put him under my wing and talked to him to make it easier for him. I fet bad for this young kid.

Kids's brains aren't fully developed until there around 25 years old. these kids I see here are definitely not that age. so I don't agree with do the crime, do the time because a lot of these kids are in there for stupid mistakes. If these kids have to be put somewhere for their typical teenage mistakes, then the place should be teaching kids about growing up and becoming a responsible adult. Jails breed criminals And when a person (especially a kid) goes to jail, whoever they were when they went in, is not the same person who comes out..

I would not be surprised if one of these so-called police officers mistakenly arrests and mistakenly punishes a straight A, docile and well-behaved student out of false claims and false assumptions. There must be empathy for at least the straight A, docile and well-behaved students. Or else this system will permanently scar and traumatize the best students.
