Man, I used to watch this video a long time ago, dreaming that I could eventually get an original Xbox. Things have changed a lot since then. (Yes, I did get my Xbox about a year ago)

Well there many late to the game and many other tutorials are difficult to follow for one reason or another, or simply too annoying. So, shut up with the negative vibes, these are brilliantly displayed, simple to follow videos, with actual links that work. So personally, many thanks for all your efforts, I see there are comments relatively recently, hence why I have added mine, great stuff (especially when the camera was stabilized) just joking, but I found them really helpful and I'll set about working on the 3 or 4 consoles I picked up on ebay for peanuts - good work my friend and good luck

Thanks for the tutorial! Still worked well in 2018 and i got it running at the first try! I was also lucky twice, the Xbox i got was already on dashboard 5960 and the first USB stick i tried that i already had lying around worked for me so i ordered 3 more USB sticks on Amazon for no reason lol. Next step for me will be to get a bigger HDD working so i have enough room for games. Thanks again and have fun playing around everyone ;)

Lol I miss my Xbox. My dad bought it for me for my 7th birthday... About 11 years ago. I loved that thing. When I was about 13, sometime around 2010-11, I softmodded my Xbox and even upgraded to a 40GB HDD. However, for some reason, the Ethernet port got damaged and the orange LED would stay on even though there was no cable plugged in. I couldn't load games through FTP since i couldn't connect it to my network. I ultimately just left it there to collect dust, and got rid of it about 2 years ago. I kind of regret doing that, but it didn't really work anymore. I also remember about the HDD and Motherboard key. Oh, how I hated that thing. We spent an entire Summer trying to build an EEPROM reader and getting the correct dash files.
+Jose Javier Flores I still have a hulk acrylic version and normal black version sitting in my cupboard.. only issue with the hulk one is with the AC adapter it makes lovely pop sounds if moved around
Great video, you made it very clear how to do the softmod. I thought I should mention though that you should never place a disc down with the label side down unless you have applied a protector to your disc Once the label is scratched the whole disc becomes useless, but if you place it shiny side down and scratch it you can almost always have the scratch polished out and restore the disc. Tony Waldron CD had this problem beacause the data was just pressed from the top onto the bottom layer of the disc so the only protection for the data was the top label, DVD was different it's data was sandwiched between a top and bottom layer of the disc, Xbox and PS2 used the DVD format not CD so didn't really matter if the top layer got scratched, the data was still protected in the middle.

It's really easy to softmod the xbox. There are tons of tutorials out there. The trickiest part is finding a compatible USB stick. Had to buy a San Disk Cruzer Blade, because all of my USB sticks weren't compatible.

Hi, great video Gradinkov. I have a problem though. The XBOX doesn't detect the Softmod installer and Splinter Cell files. It does see the USB though. I tried everything, even another XBOX, but nothing works. Help is appreciated :)
A little tip for those having problems finding a compatible usb: try getting a hold of a microsd memory stick, and connect it to the dongle via a microsd to usb adaptor. It will be a lot cheaper and easier to get a hold of the adapter and an old microsd than an older usb flash drive (as probably mentioned, newer flash drives don't seem very xbox friendly). I'll reply to this comment if something comes up.

I can confirm, that this still works in 2017. There are some small issues with Xplorer360 on Windows 10, but it's easy to solve by downloading and copying msvcr71.dll into Xplorer360 folder/location
Great tutorial's pt1 to pt4, thanks. Two quick questions, is the installation of xbmc the same process as shown in this video and can you still use the dual boot method with xbmc. Also when you choose the high def option, do you need an hd composite cable or will it still work with a standard av cable? Thanks!
Hello Lee, 1. Yes, the installation is pretty much identical if you go with XBMC. If you haven't softmodded your Xbox already, then you're all set, you can go and install the XBMC version (SID511.Installer.USB.zip), BUT if you have already applied the non-XBMC installer (SID511.Installer.zip), you need to remove it first via the Softmod Installer Deluxe menu "Remove Softmod", and only THEN use the XBMC installer, otherwise you'll brick your Xbox! I learned this the hard way :D 2. No, HD won't work with a standard AC able, sorry.

I think a good suggestion for a follow up xbox tutorial, would be to show how to uninstall the Unleash X softmod and then install the xbmc usb softmod in it's place. This would be useful for people who want to clone the orginal HDD and replace the HDD with an increased capacity. Thanks again!
What I need to know, and cannot find info about is, can a system that is only software modified, (not modchipped), have the Ram Chips upgraded and or CPU upgraded, and how I can go about doing it. Some say yes, and say I need a specific BIOS, but they never tell me where to find it, or how to go about installing it. I would also like to know if any kind of Ram or CPU upgraded can be done to the Xbox 1.6's with the Xcalibur chip, or is the RAM/CPU upgrades only made to work on the 1.0-1.5 systems due to the change in the motherboard on the 1.6 Xbox consoles. no in order to up grade ram and cpu you need a linux bios, it will never play xbox games or run dashboard again it will be just a pentium linux pc with 128 megs of ram, also the guys who did this wrecked loads of motherboards doing it, even electrical engineers its not easy and it wont ever run xbox stuff, someone about ten years ago claimed he had upgraded to 1.4 pentium and 256 megs of ram, and also claimed it played xbox games, but all others who modded them said that was total fiction, and when pushed for proof the user deleted his account, dont bother its a waste of time.
So the part where in Xplorer360 I select Drive and then Harddrive or Memcard I get the message "Could not find a FATX drive to open!" Any advice on how to resolve this?
I remember this. My cousine borrowed Splinter Cell from one of his friends so we could softmodd my xbox. I also remember that we used some kind of tool on the pc so we could play Halo online.
hi guys im ady from the UK. i've just watched your video on you tube, looks good! but was wondering if you could help me out? ill try give as much info as i can. right i've got an original xbox that has been modded (not be me) it has XBMC installed and also coinops 7 with all the games etc on a 320g hard drive. now i was wondering if i can make a direct copy of that hard drive? i've got a 160g ide pata seagate drive completely blank no OS installed on it. could i get all the data transferd to my spare drive? i would like one as a back up just in case. also my mate have given me his old original xbox as he was no longer using it, this is completely factory standard and never been opened. if i opened it up and removed the drive would i be able just to put my spare hdd in and transfer all the info that way? and does the hard drive need to be formatted or modded any way before? is there any good programs out there i could download? ive never attempted anything like this before so complete novice! altho i know how to use a computer, download stuff etc, i have all the tools, power supply for HDD etc. if you could spare a few minutes could you offer some advice or help? id really like to learn how to do this, there's so many videos out there to watch each doing and using different programs and ways etc. just want the best way possible. it would be greatly appreciated. thanks very much for reading this, hopefully you can help me out. where would i download the program what your using on here? any links? thanks ady
in the old days i would have said yes, knock your self out all the stuff you need is here, but the servers are gone, you cant swap drives in xboxes due to drive being locked with a key, there was ways of doing it but the software is gone now. enjoy your xbox, softmod the new one and enjoy that dont try mixing and matching the drives you will bork both boxes.
In this video it's the standard AV (composite) cable and the actual resolution is not 720p but 576i (PAL). In part 2 of this series I replaced it with an HD cable.
Hi Gradinkov, great video very well done. I followed your steps perfectly and softmodded my crystal xbox successfully. I have come across a problem where I am stuck on a screen where all is displayed is a 3d red X in a blue cube. The xbox boots into the original dash perfectly but when I boot the mod it goes to this screen. Has anyone had this problem before, is this bricked? I feel really hard done by as I was soo close to emulation... Any help would be great, cheers!
I did everything on this video up the very end and the screen went black. now, it's stuck on xbox live screen and i can't do anything. When i put Splinter Cell back in, it starts opening screen but I get an orange light around eject button. is there anyway to fix this?
good video, just one thing that was a 1.1 xbox why softmod it? softmods are for v1.5 and v1.6, the best mod for a 1,1 is a tsop flash which is a hard mod but a lot more flexable but i guess we all have our own ways of doing stuff.

I found my old Xbox the other day, and I found this video (among others) online on how to softmod the unit. I followed all the steps to obtain the files (from the link on this video), I put the files on a thumb drive, and was able to successfully copy the files onto the hard drive of the Xbox. From there, I inserted a copy of Splinter Cell (the original, not the platinum). I get to the start screen, I select "Start Game" and then I select the "Linux" Profile. Now here's where the process stops working - I then select "Check Points" and upon doing so, the screen goes black (no sound, no picture) and the light on my Xbox turns from Green to Orange. I have tried this process over and over several times (deleting the files from the Hard Drive before attempting it), and I get the same result each time. Can anyone please tell me how to solve this problem, or let me know what I may be doing wrong? I would really like to softmod my Xbox and run XBMC on it. ThanksNOTE: I used the SID 5.11.Installer.USB file and the SID 5.11.Installer file on separate occasions to see if I got a different result, and both give me the same result every time.
my flash drive isnt showing up in xlporer360. i have already formated it with the xbox but when i plug the flash drive into my computer it buffers and then dosnt ask to reformate and dosnt show up anywhere
My Xbox was softmodded , i even change the HDD , with bigger , with emulators and games . I give it to my friend to play some games , but he try to play Splinter Cell from the original disk. After that.. i dont know what he do but.. the console come back to original dashboard and version and now... i can't soft-mod again.. I do all steps for softodding with Splinter Cell , what i do it before .... but.. after pressing " GAMES START > LINUX >CHECK POINTS " nothing happen ..just the game boot again ..... any ideas ?
hey guys. i'm having a problem when trying to re- exploit my xbox. I had my box softmodded before, but I accidentally installed an xbox live update for one of the games I had. so now when I try to load my splinter cell exploit save, it shows a white screen, then just resets the game. it can't even get to the softmod installer menu. if ANYONE has an idea of what might be going on, please let me know. For anyone on Win 7 and xplorer 360 is not working; 1. Find an XP computer, beg borrow or steal or install xp on old vista laptop, (mine had a smashed screen and no battery) 2. Download Datels Action replay, search "action replay software",install (XP) 3. Download Datels Action replay 1.4 update again search, this time it will be the official supplier, "codejunkies", install (XP) DO NOT RUN ACTION REPLAY 4. Download USB View, again search "USBVIEW" 5. Get 5.1 files, and format usb by plugging into xbox 6. Run USBView (either computer), find xbox usb, plug in, plug out, to find usb, now make a note of the Product ID number and the Vendor ID Number you need last 4 characters of each. 7. Go to Action Replay directory go to new 1.4 should be labelled "Action Replay XBOX" not xbox. 8. Open driver folder and open sys. file, scroll down until you come across entries for a list of authorized usbs, edit anyone of them to your Pid and Vid, first is best. 9. Go to device manager, find usb driver of xbox memory card, put in, take out, to see clearly, right click it usually under (usb mass storage), click update driver, click no dont search, click no i have disk, go to Datel - Action Replay XBOX - Drivers - click on system file changed earlier, windows will say unsigned, click install anyway. 10. Run Action Replay 1.4 and with memory card jacked, and drag and drop files straight to the memory card, DO NOT UNZIP EXPLOITS, JUST THE 5.1. INSTALLER, transfer the needed zip files onto the card (drag and drop) 11. Follow the rest of the tutorial. Any questions message me, I know its complex but it is a work around, Xplorer 360, Xport, FatExplorer and Datel do not function correctly on my windows 7 and many others it seems.
Ok i have like 6 USB sticks here an none of them works. Where can i get a compatible USB stick from in 2015??? As all the ones ive looked at on the compatibility list for this mod are like 32MB or 256MB.....you just cant get this USB sticks anymore??
BlockABoots They are VERY hard to find. I had to buy a memory card with the hack already on it. If I was at home I'd send it to you for a nominal fee. I paid $30 for mine on ebay because I was very impatient. The key is to look for a FAT32 stick no more than 2 GB. Here's a list from users that is known to work. www.biline.ca/xbox_flash_list.htm
jrgs906 I actually had success with a SanDisk 4GB micro SD card and used a micro SD card USB reader!!. Apparently micro SD cards and USB reader combos are the way to go
When hitting the "harddrive or memcard" I get a message saying " could not find a FATX drive to open",,,,,, I ran it as administrator but that didn't help so what should I do?
I'm having issues. Everything was going fine, I injected the files into the USB and when I plugged it into my Xbox it showed no memory of the files. No SID or Splinter Cell. I think it might be the thumb drive but then again it could be something else? I followed everything step by step, the 360 drive app shows that the memory card has all the files yet nothing shows up. Help?
For me it freezes after checkpoints. Gives me a black screen and the led light is flashing between orange, red and green. Tried two usb drives, both are recognized by xbox.

this is the problem im having.. the xbox sees the usb formats and erases it.. i am now able to put saves on the drive from the xbox.. i put the files on the usb using 360 xplorer.. but the xbox doesn't see the files... but it sees the usb .. lt lets me customize the usb.. but no files

yes, that is what you do, pressing launch game will start the game in the disc drive (sorry, im 8 months late lol)

What I need to know, and cannot find info about is, can a system that is only software modified, (not modchipped), have the Ram Chips upgraded and or CPU upgraded, and how I can go about doing it. Some say yes, and say I need a specific BIOS, but they never tell me where to find it, or how to go about installing it.
I would also like to know if any kind of Ram or CPU upgraded can be done to the Xbox 1.6's with the Xcalibur chip, or is the RAM/CPU upgrades only made to work on the 1.0-1.5 systems due to the change in the motherboard on the 1.6 Xbox consoles. Thanks!
no in order to up grade ram and cpu you need a linux bios, it will never play xbox games or run dashboard again it will be just a pentium linux pc with 128 megs of ram, also the guys who did this wrecked loads of motherboards doing it, even electrical engineers its not easy and it wont ever run xbox stuff, someone about ten years ago claimed he had upgraded to 1.4 pentium and 256 megs of ram, and also claimed it played xbox games, but all others who modded them said that was total fiction, and when pushed for proof the user deleted his account, dont bother its a waste of time.

Freddy's Jeugdsentiment PAL Xboxs don't support 480p to my knowledge. You'll have luck with a NTSC-U Xbox.

So the part where in Xplorer360 I select Drive and then Harddrive or Memcard I get the message "Could not find a FATX drive to open!" Any advice on how to resolve this?

I remember this. My cousine borrowed Splinter Cell from one of his friends so we could softmodd my xbox.

im ady from the UK. i've just watched your video on you tube, looks good! but was wondering if you could help me out? ill try give as much info as i can. right i've got an original xbox that has been modded (not be me) it has XBMC installed and also coinops 7 with all the games etc on a 320g hard drive. now i was wondering if i can make a direct copy of that hard drive? i've got a 160g ide pata seagate drive completely blank no OS installed on it. could i get all the data transferd to my spare drive? i would like one as a back up just in case.
also my mate have given me his old original xbox as he was no longer using it, this is completely factory standard and never been opened. if i opened it up and removed the drive would i be able just to put my spare hdd in and transfer all the info that way? and does the hard drive need to be formatted or modded any way before? is there any good programs out there i could download?
ive never attempted anything like this before so complete novice! altho i know how to use a computer, download stuff etc, i have all the tools, power supply for HDD etc.
if you could spare a few minutes could you offer some advice or help? id really like to learn how to do this, there's so many videos out there to watch each doing and using different programs and ways etc. just want the best way possible. it would be greatly appreciated. thanks very much for reading this, hopefully you can help me out.

in the old days i would have said yes, knock your self out all the stuff you need is here, but the servers are gone, you cant swap drives in xboxes due to drive being locked with a key, there was ways of doing it but the software is gone now.
enjoy your xbox, softmod the new one and enjoy that dont try mixing and matching the drives you will bork both boxes.
What did you use to connect your Xbox to your HD TV for a 720p/1080p display?
In this video it's the standard AV (composite) cable and the actual resolution is not 720p but 576i (PAL). In part 2 of this series I replaced it with an HD cable.
Hi Gradinkov, great video very well done. I followed your steps perfectly and softmodded my crystal xbox successfully. I have come across a problem where I am stuck on a screen where all is displayed is a 3d red X in a blue cube. The xbox boots into the original dash perfectly but when I boot the mod it goes to this screen. Has anyone had this problem before, is this bricked? I feel really hard done by as I was soo close to emulation... Any help would be great, cheers!
The files inside the usb dont show up on the xbox after following the instructions. Did I miss something?
I did everything on this video up the very end and the screen went black. now, it's stuck on xbox live screen and i can't do anything. When i put Splinter Cell back in, it starts opening screen but I get an orange light around eject button. is there anyway to fix this?

good video, just one thing that was a 1.1 xbox why softmod it? softmods are for v1.5 and v1.6,
the best mod for a 1,1 is a tsop flash which is a hard mod but a lot more flexable but i guess we all have our own ways of doing stuff.

I found my old Xbox the other day, and I found this video (among others) online on how to softmod the unit. I followed all the steps to obtain the files (from the link on this video), I put the files on a thumb drive, and was able to successfully copy the files onto the hard drive of the Xbox. From there, I inserted a copy of Splinter Cell (the original, not the platinum). I get to the start screen, I select "Start Game" and then I select the "Linux" Profile. Now here's where the process stops working - I then select "Check Points" and upon doing so, the screen goes black (no sound, no picture) and the light on my Xbox turns from Green to Orange. I have tried this process over and over several times (deleting the files from the Hard Drive before attempting it), and I get the same result each time. Can anyone please tell me how to solve this problem, or let me know what I may be doing wrong? I would really like to softmod my Xbox and run XBMC on it. ThanksNOTE: I used the SID 5.11.Installer.USB file and the SID 5.11.Installer file on separate occasions to see if I got a different result, and both give me the same result every time.
my flash drive isnt showing up in xlporer360. i have already formated it with the xbox but when i plug the flash drive into my computer it buffers and then dosnt ask to reformate and dosnt show up anywhere

When i installed on a second Xbox, I got a triple image on my dash and in games. I can't pin it down.
My Xbox was softmodded , i even change the HDD , with bigger , with emulators and games . I give it to my friend to play some games , but he try to play Splinter Cell from the original disk. After that.. i dont know what he do but.. the console come back to original dashboard and version and now... i can't soft-mod again.. I do all steps for softodding with Splinter Cell , what i do it before .... but.. after pressing " GAMES START > LINUX >CHECK POINTS " nothing happen ..just the game boot again ..... any ideas ?
hey guys. i'm having a problem when trying to re- exploit my xbox. I had my box softmodded before, but I accidentally installed an xbox live update for one of the games I had. so now when I try to load my splinter cell exploit save, it shows a white screen, then just resets the game. it can't even get to the softmod installer menu. if ANYONE has an idea of what might be going on, please let me know. ( It's an xbox V1.1, if that's any help)

For anyone on Win 7 and xplorer 360 is not working;
1. Find an XP computer, beg borrow or steal or install xp on old vista laptop, (mine had a smashed screen and no battery)
2. Download Datels Action replay, search "action replay software",install (XP)
3. Download Datels Action replay 1.4 update again search, this time it will be the official supplier, "codejunkies", install (XP)
DO NOT RUN ACTION REPLAY
4. Download USB View, again search "USBVIEW"
5. Get 5.1 files, and format usb by plugging into xbox
6. Run USBView (either computer), find xbox usb, plug in, plug out, to find usb, now make a note of the Product ID number and the Vendor ID Number you need last 4 characters of each.
7. Go to Action Replay directory go to new 1.4 should be labelled "Action Replay XBOX" not xbox.
8. Open driver folder and open sys. file, scroll down until you come across entries for a list of authorized usbs, edit anyone of them to your Pid and Vid, first is best.
9. Go to device manager, find usb driver of xbox memory card, put in, take out, to see clearly, right click it usually under (usb mass storage), click update driver, click no dont search, click no i have disk, go to Datel - Action Replay XBOX - Drivers - click on system file changed earlier, windows will say unsigned, click install anyway.
10. Run Action Replay 1.4 and with memory card jacked, and drag and drop files straight to the memory card, DO NOT UNZIP EXPLOITS, JUST THE 5.1. INSTALLER, transfer the needed zip files onto the card (drag and drop)
11. Follow the rest of the tutorial.
Any questions message me, I know its complex but it is a work around, Xplorer 360, Xport, FatExplorer and Datel do not function correctly on my windows 7 and many others it seems.

i owned an unmodded machine - never dumping that. And i played a modded 1 certain it had a custom background.

Ok i have like 6 USB sticks here an none of them works. Where can i get a compatible USB stick from in 2015??? As all the ones ive looked at on the compatibility list for this mod are like 32MB or 256MB.....you just cant get this USB sticks anymore??
BlockABoots They are VERY hard to find. I had to buy a memory card with the hack already on it. If I was at home I'd send it to you for a nominal fee. I paid $30 for mine on ebay because I was very impatient. The key is to look for a FAT32 stick no more than 2 GB. Here's a list from users that is known to work. www.biline.ca/xbox_flash_list.htm
jrgs906 I actually had success with a SanDisk 4GB micro SD card and used a micro SD card USB reader!!. Apparently micro SD cards and USB reader combos are the way to go

Yes, but only if you have the eeprom to unlock the hard drive.
When hitting the "harddrive or memcard" I get a message saying " could not find a FATX drive to open",,,,,, I ran it as administrator but that didn't help so what should I do?
I'm having issues. Everything was going fine, I injected the files into the USB and when I plugged it into my Xbox it showed no memory of the files. No SID or Splinter Cell. I think it might be the thumb drive but then again it could be something else? I followed everything step by step, the 360 drive app shows that the memory card has all the files yet nothing shows up. Help?
For me it freezes after checkpoints. Gives me a black screen and the led light is flashing between orange, red and green. Tried two usb drives, both are recognized by xbox.

the xbox sees the usb formats and erases it..
i am now able to put saves on the drive from the xbox..
i put the files on the usb using 360 xplorer..
but the xbox doesn't see the files...
but it sees the usb .. lt lets me customize the usb.. but no files
