I like the way that Professor Jin thinks and analyses complex subjects. Always respectful and insightful in highlighting problem areas, yet always suggesting options and solutions. Many Westerners simply don’t understand the Chinese mentality and strangely look down on China without any detailed knowledge about how it thinks and acts. Never underestimate the capacity of Chinese people to exceed and succeed.

Yep! That comes from taking higher degrees in both, China and the US; among other things. As I explained it, in 1985, this was/is necessary so that those who will achieve power will NOT become estranged from their own people. In addition, it was important to gain close friendships with the other people, who will gain power in China, by going through school with them, in China, as well.

Dr Jin doesn't deserve the negative remarks from those who believe she doesn't represent a typical Chinese woman from the rural area. She's influencing world leaders in economics and finance. To appreciate her, you need to think at her intellectual level. Great job.

Although I am not a Chinese citizen, I don't feel like Dr Jin's statement about Chinese women completely true. I do work with many teams in China and a lot of the managers and leaders are women. There may be pressure from parents to marry and settle down but many Chinese women are very hard working and are still able to succeed in their careers. I do feel the gender equality is much better in China than other Asian countries.

Chinese women maybe the most equally treated in term of employment, political involvement, financial independence. The speaker was sent to US at her early young age, and should have no real life understanding about what she talked about. It is unfortunate for both west and China not having someone bridging the reality to each other to reach a common understanding.

I've watched some of her talks so far since I was borned under the one-child policy, so I genuinely am quite interested in hearing talks and studies about this policy and its effect. Interesting opinion, and when Dr. Jin talks about the interactions between generations of a one-child family I really felt relatable, thanks for the great talk! However it is just very disturbing to see under every single post of her there are comments about what her father does (or did) and how she should NOT be presenting the generation: she might be given a better environment or opportunities that her peers to kick start, but the degrees and researches and her mind aren't just fragile pieces wrapped in a fancy cover, she's doing quite fantastic regardless of what position her father stands or what party her father involves in. She herself is no doubt an intellectual scholar and a successful woman.

Sorry to say her talk is profound in the lack of critical analysis on one hand, and narcissism in mentality on the other. But then again, you (Dr Jin) are not solely responsible for what you are, like so many of the post-80s elites of China, are brought up lacking in gravitas in character because of parental pampering. My hope is that your kind will grow up to be more matured sooner than later. After all, China and Chinese of previous generations from whom your generation inherited, deserves better.

I notice you have done OK, so what is the problem? Seems your education did not hurt. Nor did your father's connections and help. Why are you so angry that your world view and values differ from your parents? This is a normal generation gap. Move-on and take the chip off your shoulder. Just Do It! A native Chinese speaks to a bunch of native Chinese in English? I find it odd.Was it a speech to share idea? Or was it more to show how good she is- i will speak english to you even though you can get the idea better in our mother tongue? Or were they just puppet audience sitting there for a show while she was trying to entertain her foreign audience in her fantasy?
That was just my criticism of the choice sf language. Idea wise, its full of cheap shots. The idea of Chinese families don't put much importance on girls' achievement after they get a nice degree are outdated and stereotypical. Her view totally shows how out of touch this good looking woman is from the reality today. Just look at the number of highly educated unmarried so called "leftover" girls in the country which certainly has created a huge social issue in China.
This woman is blowing the horn for a wrong cause. For me the bigger issue in China today for the female achievers is how they can adjust their mindset of marrying up which for me is largely responsible for their failure in finding their love. This woman herself married a Caucasian man - I would say a nice job in successfully marrying up - which Chinese man could match her unmatched combination of beauty and English speaking talent, let alone her high power parent?
