When I first saw the title I thought "there is no way you can make it to France in 5 hrs in a small plane". So, I was thinking maybe you were heading to a city named France in the U.S. Then you were heading up the Eastern Seaboard into Canada so I started to question if it was possible. I began looking at the planes specs and calculating if that model plane could make it to France in 5 hrs. Then, after calculating the plane could fly about 850miles (1368km) in 5 hrs I pulled up a map and drew a circle from Boston, MA. I just got the circle drawn and noticed the city of St. Pierre within the radius on the route you were traveling. At that point you said, we are in St. Pierre. Pretty cool. I learned something new and saw a great family trip.

What are the performance specs of this plane? I’m guessing it’s turbo’ sand pressurized to allow high altitude?

    • @DigitalNomadOnFIRE

You had to check the specs lol. An airliner can't do that no way a GA plane can. It was obviously some French possession in the Atlantic.

Nice video of your trip. I could tell from the beginning you were off to SPM, as I am a Toronto area resident (I lived in Quincy, MA for 9 years,... loved it there.). I have been to St. Pierre 3 times now, and plan to go again in Sept 2020, if the COVID restrictions are lifted. I drive to the east coast each summer (relatives to visit in Halifax / friends to see in Boston). then up to Newfoundland, and I take the 1 hour ferry ride to St. Pierre. Usually spend 5 days. You must go again and be there on July 14 for France's independence festivities (Bastille Day)... a lot of all day + all evening fun, and fireworks at 10 pm. I see you went to my favourite restaurant, Les P'tits Graviers..... I go for the salmon pizza when there.

Don’t know about the US, but European regulations require that life vests be worn at all times when traveling over water with land not within gliding distance. On top of that, the water up there is cold, even in summer. If there’s an issue with your life raft, you will die of hypothermia very quickly. As awkward as they are, a flight like this requires survival suits, imho. And you have to wear them in the plane, of course. You wouldn’t be able to put them on in an emergency. Check out what all the ferry pilots do on the North Atlantic route.

I figured out in the first part that, with all the time you spent on the ground, your destination was the only remaining soil in North America that still flies the French flag. Pretty sneaky with the title. I'm sure your quite aware of the electrical interference either in the aircraft's radios or in the recording connections. That buzz.....!

Thanks for listening despite the audio issue. We solved it by tossing the GoPro and switching to a Yi Action Camera. The GoPro was picking up electrical noise from it's charger/audio cable. The Yi works flawlessly at 1/4 the price... ;-)

Abasc Ylahim . They flew from Boston in the United States to the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. They are just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. They are part of North America. But they are also part of France. Of course, they had to clear customs and immigration in both France (on the islands) and Canada (when they stopped in Nova Scotia). They probably did not show it because you usually cannot film that process. All of this is explained in the video.

Really nifty! --but wondering why you didn't show the panel with all the cool avionics you mentioned? And it would have been nice to see your power settings/airspeed etc. Also, was somewhat disappointing that there was almost zero footage of the 185 miles across open sea and the approach planning/com into Saint-Pierre.

You fell asleep in history class didn't you? If you'd stayed awake you would have learned that all of what is now Eastern Canada used to be France and that St Pierre and Miquelon is what remains. If you slept through that part of class you probably don't know that Newfoundland was actually a sovereign nation until 1949.
