That monitor mount is really tricky as it may simply get loose as it is pressing against an angled surface. It only needs to move slightly to become completely loose very fast and then fall on the desk. You really need to add some angled piece of wood (or 3D print) and screw it to the desk so it cannot move. Then on that piece you should clamp the monitor arm. This will fail rather catastrophically very soon.
Totally subjective here, but this is the best upgrade to date. Unreal setup, and visually it's so appealing as well. Congratulations to Brandon and his SO on the baby as well! 👊
For me this is one of the worst, they could've easily modded the Z170 board to be compatible with 9th gen with minimal issues, but because intel's sponsoring the video and they didn't want to piss them off, they didn't. Z170 and Coffee Lake support is actually possible and easy.
Honestly, the benq lamp actually is kinda awesome. A lamp that just shines down on your whole desk and not shine into your eyes and the doesn't cause the glare on your monitor regardless of what it is and, unlike the china brand knockoffs, the day light is colour accurate to enough to not affect your colour grade on screen.
As a photographer and a tech fan I was waiting so long for Brandon's uprgrade! Glad it turned out as amazing as I expected! That BenQ light sure looks like a game changer!

Did anyone else foresee that the Z170 would not work with the 9700k? I was sitting there wondering how Linus hadn't noticed that he was trying to install 9th gen in a 6th gen board. Side note, it should be entirely possible for those to work together if not for Intel unnecessarily changing their pinout for LGA 1151.
Intel probably changed pin layout because most of the older boards didn't have a power delivery capable of dealing with the likes of the 9900K. The 7700K had half the cores and close to half the power draw. Sure, enthusiast boards could handle it, but those aren't the ones Intel would have been worried about.
@@Steamrick Apparently its possible to flash a different bios on the z170 boards and get 8th/9th gen chips working. You also have to cover a couple pins with electrical tape or some kinda mask. But you're right about needing to watch what CPU you use and be sure the board is rated for it.e of

Brandon, you're living the life. Nice extreme tech upgrade, nice place, nice girl and baby, and what seems to be a like a good job doing what you like.
little heads up from experience, unless that monitor mount has teeth to grip the wood, over a period of time, vibration will eventually cause the mount to slip off and have a pretty big problem. To overcome this, I used a oscillating tool to cut myself an notch so it can be mounted flat. Pretty easy because all you are doing to removing the bevel edge in a back area, and it can not be seen because the back is up against the wall.
It definitely looks like a very sad and expensive accident waiting to happen. While better than mounting to the angled surface, I think removing material to flatten that area out might make the desk too thin for a cantilevered mount (looks like it would remove at least half of the thickness just to let the axis of the mounting bolt be on the flat portion). Making a matching angled wedge that you glue and screw to the desk wouldn't be tough, could even be 3D printed with solid infill in a strong material. This would leave you a parallel to the top surface place to anchor that mounting plate without worrying about making the desk too thin. Either option is going to hold tighter than that angled face.
19:35 "Why would you ever want to shine light to your monitor?" I agree with you 100% here Linus! With light setup like that, any small dust particle is going to make you insane. The box said "40 W" but the final result looks more like 6 W LED lights.
@@mihirmutalikdesai I would much prefer manufacturers just printed the lumen output in the box. This "N Watt equivalent" stuff has way too much leaway to make any sense to be used as a measurement unit.
With Synology, you can upgrade to larger drives by replacing them one by one and resilvering every time. It will take about 1-2 days per drive. You can use it while it is doing the resilvering process, but with reduced performance.
True, as long as it was originally setup with the Synology Hybrid Raid, and not just RAID5 or 6. More importantly, there is no way that those NAS devices are staying on the desk like that. They are way too loud. Maybe put them in the garage.
It works with all RAIDs types. With RAID 5 and 6 you have to replace ALL the drives with new drives of equal size one at a time. Once done it will do another parity check and rebuild to the expanded size.

Those LG 31MU97 mostly all died from a ROM failure :( Never been burned so badly by a product recommendation

It's amazing they have so many employees now to where they can have a whole series of upgrading their workers setups at home. Amazing concept that only works on a platform like this.
And by the time they are done with all the employees, they can do a $2500 refresh on all the existing setups and do it all over again!
Well intel pays them to make these videos to advertise so obviously they'll keep making more. It's an incredible business plan - intel pays them to make 21 minute long adverts for intel processors, then they put ads on top of the 21 minute intel advert as well. These videos will never end so long as intel is paying for them, at some point they'll start upgrading family members setups, then neighbors setups etc etc.

Ive been binging a bunch of these tech upgrades, and what surprises me the most is how much stuff people "borrow" or take from the office.
These r fun videos to binge on
Totally subjective here, but this is the best upgrade to date. Unreal setup, and visually it's so appealing as well. Congratulations to Brandon and his SO on the baby as well! 👊
I really do so love the look of that 980 Ti Founder's Edition though... The 1080 Ti Founder's Edition even moreso.

Yep, light where you want it.

I think some of it comes from how much stuff LTT gets, the old stuff has to go somewhere, and people end up taking it home.
I feel like it's fake anger anyway. On top of that, I'm certain if he asked for it back he'd get it.
It's a comedy bit! Like the "forcing" employees to help with the house moving. Or the constant mentioning of the LTT waterbottle .

I'd be rocking a 9900k if not for that. Went with Ryzen instead.
Intel probably changed pin layout because most of the older boards didn't have a power delivery capable of dealing with the likes of the 9900K. The 7700K had half the cores and close to half the power draw.
Sure, enthusiast boards could handle it, but those aren't the ones Intel would have been worried about.
Yeah I was waiting for that realization too 🙂 I've had that same board for years now and just recently upgraded to a 7700k I received for free.
@@Steamrick Apparently its possible to flash a different bios on the z170 boards and get 8th/9th gen chips working. You also have to cover a couple pins with electrical tape or some kinda mask.

little heads up from experience, unless that monitor mount has teeth to grip the wood, over a period of time, vibration will eventually cause the mount to slip off and have a pretty big problem.

It's a 40W incandescent equivalent bulb.
Also Greg, the desktop Synologys NAS's are not loud. They are very quiet. The computer in Brandon's setup would be way louder than the NAS.
