Sylvie Chantecaille is the correct name of the founder of Chantecaille
Chantecaiile is SOOOOOOOO GOOD!! take it from an older woman the 200.00 cream is worth the 200.00!!! :) Thanks for the video, Robert. Always enlightening and fun.
Chantecaille sold to Beyersdorf. Owners of Nivea. They, too, are treating Chantecaille as a cash grab. Their luxury arm of their business.
does this mean they are changing formulas???? @@kateaye3506
5:40 This woman seems to either have some type of obsessive attachment to this face oil.. that its sexual to here. 😅
Can we do a “Brands that have failed under L’Oréal”? This is probably more of James’ territory, because L’Oréal has destroyed Kiehl’s, CeraVe and Redken. They get their hands on a company and just change the formulas with cheap ingredients.
They've destroyed redken? How?
They also ruined Urban Decay. 😞
Guess we can disagree
Aren't Estee Lauder a parent company of L'Oréal?
@LizzieLightning I don't think so.. I googled and it says that Nestlé owns 20%, and the Bettencourt family owns like 33%
I work in the beauty industry and we call them “Estee Slaughter” for a reason 😬
Big brands buy their rivals, then put less effort into them. They just wanted the competition off the market.
Highlighting your scar like this is just 😗👌🏻 *chefs kiss*. Our differences are beautiful and its such a wonderful example of this!
Thank you so so much!! 🖤🖤
@@RobertWelshLiterally this, I clicked on this video just to see if the highlight was photoshopped on for the thumbnail.
But no, it Is fab at every angle ❤ Thank you for the inspiration!
Was just about to comment this too, it looks great!
I love it. It's like he was made for make-up himself. It's so cool/unique/just that oomph.
@@RobertWelsh I'm in school to be an esthetician I was talking with my teacher she said I she loves watching the makeup artist on RUclips with a scar through his eyebrow I was like ohh that's Robert Welsh! 😅
Robert has said what people are afraid to say when it comes to Estee Lauder.
🤷🏻♂️🖤🖤🖤🖤
Wait what does this mean? I have only ever seen people shit talk esteé
@@user-uc5dm9bm7umaybe they meant influencers, since they want to be on the good side of brands
@@alex-hc3sk I have seen many influencers shit talk estée too huh
Estee lauder, please bring back Idealist
All I hear when Jo Malone is said is Jome Alone. Like an off brand Home Alone. Kebin McMallister has to fight off the Dry Robbers on New Year’s Eve.
i’ll never be able to un-hear this 😂
Estée Lauder corporate motto: “Keep your friends close, buy and kill your enemies.”
Sounds like a full embrace of capitalism and they’re “killing it”. The beauty industry is cut throat and the older companies will fight to the death!
I think the big beauty conglomerates buy smaller brands in order to savage formulas and staff rather than to preserve the brand itself.
it’s definitely to take down the competition
@@laur83yep, the beauty industry, specifically makeup, is a monopoly. That's why indie brands struggle so much to grow and when they do they get acquired by either Estée Lauder, L'Oréal or Coty so they can get wiped out/under control.
It actually made a lot of sense that they acquired a lot of companies in 2014-16 considering it was the makeup boom and a lot of independent brands where starting to get more mainstream attention
Oh man, if Prescriptives came back, they would rock the industry.
I would definitely try them out! Love the concept!
My mom used to love Prescriptives! I remember I used to always love going through her makeup bag and seeing so much of their stuff. 😊
My first makeup was Prescriptives!
Re: Glam Glow: You forgot to mention the part about paying $85 for the privilege of having your skin melted off by fancy mud.
Perscriptives is still the only foundation I've ever purchased that was an exact match. I was so sad when they went out of business.
It would be such a popular brand now I’m sure of it!
@@RobertWelsh the quality was great and the people working the counters were extremely well trained.
@RobertWelsh I completely agree with you Robert! 💜😍💜
It was so good. My mum took me there after I had slapped dream mousse all over my pale skin 😂
I loved Perscriptives, too. I now purchase two Armani Luminous Silk foundations and mix them myself. I like a light powder finish, and I’ve never been able to find a perfect match since. The amount of foundation and powders I’ve tossed in the rubbish bin since Perscriptives demise is actually shocking.
I used to work for Prescriptives at a counter in a Bullocks/Macy's. This was in the Los Angeles County area. I loved it, and it was so fun making the custom foundations and powders for people. Whenever I made a powder it was like a show/entertainment for the customer as well as for people walking by. I also used to love using the machine to press it into a compact for people, right there, you would have the compact and loose powder to take home too. We made custom formulas for actors, news anchors, all kinds of folks that were in front of a camera. I can still look at people and tell what undertones they have and what colors would be right for them. That cosmetics line trained my eye to see color in the most amazing way. Their concealer was the very best. I have never found a better one. 💔
My uncle was a really high up there financial consultant for Estée Lauder a couple years ago. He quit because he only slept for about 3-4 hours a night and couldn’t stand it anymore, they really needed help 😭
It’s so crazy to see how many brands are owned by these parent companies! 😂 👻 The Estée Lauder Family Curse!
Isn’t it crazy!! 😂😂
I’ve had this rule for 3 decades. If Lauder buys it, steer clear. Nars held out at least.
Then caved to sell in China.
Same! Estee Lauder, as a stand alone brand, was AWESOME in the 80s and 90s. Got too greedy.
Nars was bought by Shiseido, and they seem to handle their business better, but I still think the creative aspect of that brand is now lost 😔
My dad was the logistics manager at Maybelline then became the manager of their mascara department, and when I was a kid we moved to 3 diff states when L"Oreal bought them and moved him. So this video is so interesting to me. I had a boyfriend in 5th grade whose mom also worked for Maybelline. This was in Memphis, TN. I thought he'd be moving too and was crushed finding L:Oreal cut out a ton of employees. As a 5th grader i didn't understand and it was harsh. That's how I was affected by brand buyout!!
Love your channel
I was honestly surprised when they shut down Becca. The Becca flying saucer highlighters are iconic. Not even just Champaign Pop, the best subtle white highlighter I've ever used is from Becca.
same here. super surprised that they decided to give up on becca. i imagine the pandemic did indeed play a part in that. and we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. but it generally was thought that becca was pretty successful. so the shutdown was rather unexpected
I didn’t even realize Estée Lauder was why Becca was gone.
So many good products, so many of my holy grails. I just went to buy more one day and couldn’t find the Becca section so I asked for help and she was all “Oh honey, they went out of business” 😞
@@LoveeeJonesss they’re one of the reasons. becca also came out with that clear foundation that flopped and ofc the pandemic would’ve negatively impacted most cosmetic brands. so it’s a number of factors. and their ties to jaclyn hill probably also didn’t look good after lipstick gate. if you want the becca highlighter and the under eye corrector they’re sold under smashbox now, another estée lauder brand ☺️
@@laur83 except that the becca x smashbox highlighters are terrible now.
I am going to reveal my age with this, however, I remember using MAC prior to Estée Lauder purchasing them and the shadow quality suffered. They were a lot more buttery and saturated prior.
No lies told, MAC eyeshadow was everything 😢
i wasn’t around before EL bought mac so i’ve never known any different mac formulas. it’s cool to hear from people who can tell the difference pre and post acquisition. has anything else noticeable changed in the years since besides the shadow quality?
@@laur83 the powder/foundation/concealer shades are not the same quality either. I have to wear three different powders/concealers to get the color that one powder use to give me.
@@TexasChick-pq3dl oh dear. that sounds super inconvenient and unnecessary
Completely agree - I only ever used to wear MAC eyeshadow and it was incredible. I never wear it now, it is not the same formula.
❤❤❤...Also, olfactive clarity means like how clear/spot on the smell is. You have nerves called olfactory nerves that are responsible for your sense of smell.
Oh okkkkk!!!!
Now that you mentioned Max Factor, I wonder what is going on with this brand? It was popular like 20 years ago, and we still have their products in stores, just nobody talks about them
The reason why I barely bother with Max factor is that they stubbornly put in perfume in most of their products. Their liquid blush is super nice and fragrance free tho.
My mum wore it in the 60s and 70s. It put me off the brand.
i always forget that this brand even exists. it used to be in drugstores in my country but was taken out ages ago
Laneige actually does something similar to prescriptives in Korea where they use a machine and undertones to determine and mix your foundation for you for about 45 USD.
Prescriptives was so ahead of its time. It was amazing. Really should make a comeback. Can we start a petition? Ugh, I remember going into Barneys and just sniffing the olio lusso. I barely even let myself put drops on my hands because it smelled so good, there was a real danger of getting addicted and ooooh buddy it was expensive.
Prescriptives was one of the only makeup companies that made a non-custom foundation that perfectly matched my cool pale olive skin. RIP. I miss that foundation!!
I was very lucky to have had Prescriptives makeup when I was about 16. It was the best match I've ever had, and nothing has ever compared. Was sad to see this one go.
I treated myself to a perfect Prescriptives foundation too! It was very pricey but wonderful. That and the Flight or In Flight cream were some of the best products I have ever used ❤
YES! Back in 1993 was the first time I tried Prescriotives and fell in LOVE! They were the best cosmetics company to be aware of the fact that dark skinned people can have yellow undertones. I am so tired of the foundations with red, blue, neutral (which is never neutral, but gray on me) To say that I was very sad to see them go is huge understatement.
And the fragrance they had Calyx ... Still my fave of all time
@@tastycar CALYX!! I haven't smelled anything like it since...
The problem was that it was so good it was going to out complete Lauder with its miniscule shade range.
I’m 50-ish and Estee Lauder has, is and always will be an “old lady” brand to me because my grandmother used it,
I actually use to work for Prescriptives! It was a great brand. I feel like back in be early 2000’s they were up there with MAC for innovation and artistry. Very sad that they are gone.
I worked for aveda right before it was bought by Estée Lauder and it was wild how quickly the brand changed afterward and where it is today
Prescriptives was my first big girl cosmetic purchase. I’m multiracial and I was mesmerized by having a perfect match. Paying $200 for the foundation, concealer and powder was a lot back then lol
It's a lot NOW (to me anyway), but for the perfect match, WORTH EVERY PENNY!🤣💜
that is still mad expensive ngl 😂
Definitely worth it. I had mine for a tour that I did in Europe and it lasted me months. A fellow classmate was using my powder and fell in love with it so I had to divide it up and give it to him cuz he's pretty close to me and he immediately bought himself some when he found a place that made Prescritives. It was such a beautiful finish " your skin but better". I really miss it.
I worked for Prescriptives briefly at Saks in NYC. I loved it and it was my 1st foray into makeup/skincare and I still love Calyx. I don't understand why they discontinued such a progressive arm of their brand. No visionaries on that team.
BTW, I too have a prominent scar (on my forehead) since age 5--I'd miss it if it were gone! Thank you Robert for your stance on scars, I felt alone not wanting to "fix it" as I was advised to. And for your very warm 💜
Calyx is one of my all time favorite fragrances.
Calyx soooo needs to make a return: "the wildly exhilarating fragrance" 😊.
Calyx is still being made.
@@dawnbonome9056 Where, please tell.
Calyx is now being produced by Clinique!
I used Origins, Prescriptives, and Becca (at the least) when they were new and independent, the quality and efficacy significantly decreased once they were gobbled up by Estee Lauder. Thanks for all of these, sometimes I think of whatever happened to, and you are on point with providing knowledge and entertainment! Maybe they'll relaunch Prescriptives, it would be amazing in this market, they were ahead of their time with the concept.
I'm ready for another brand deep dive! I never looked at these companies deeply before so I appreciate this type of educational video as well as your reactions and reviews ❤
Thank you so so muuuuch!
Working for MAC in New Zealand every time Estee touched anything it got fucked up- Robert hits the nail on the head with this one! As usual
I feel like I’m alone in genuinely loving Clinique products… the makeup less so but their recent skincare launches have been really phenomenal
I’m TERRIFIED that bumble and bumble is gonna be at its end soon… no insanely innovative or exciting launches since they were purchased and the advertising has tanked, not to mention taking the brand off the shelves of a couple well known hair care specific retailers in Canada😭 like everything is going wrong!
Yikes, I should stock up on the hair oil while I can. I love it so much.
NOOOOOOOOO I will be so sad if that happens 😭😭😭 the thickening dry spun texture spray is one of my all time favorite products
I was sad when they bought The Ordinary. I loved that it was a Toronto brand. Home ❤
I think Smashbox were massively affected by the closure of Debenhams stores in UK/Ire. They had counters in every one.
GlamGlow also pulled out of the UK/Ire around the same time as Smashbox... 😎✌🏼💜🌙
I don't really get into the business side of brands as much, so I don't know which brands are owned by which companies... But I still remember the first time I realized that all of these brands aren't actually seperate entities and that a lot of them belong to a few big umbrella companies. I was so shocked. 😅
To me it seems like these big companies don't want to invest in the development side of any given brand, so now they essentially just trade. If they can buy it for a price, sell so much that it pays out and then shut it down, it's a win for them. They don't buy brands to keep evolving them. They buy them to milk the money and then let them die out (in my opinion 🤭). It's actually kind of sad.
it’s also to lessen the competition.
EL announced they bought The Ordinary when they dumped Becca, of which I still haven’t forgiven them for. They’re the Borg of the beauty industry. Basically assimilate, trash and discard and then it’s on to the next.
i remember when the estee edit brand came out and i never tried it but i remember its impact being pretty lackluster especially in the 2016 era when beauty gurus were blowing up
Not me crying when you talked about Prescriptives. I loved their products so much! 😭
What I absolutely hate about umbrella brands is the fact that the brand might be cruelty free, then next minute they’re under an umbrella of a huge company that does test on animals, so then indirectly your supporting cruelty to animals by supporting your previously cruelty free brand. I hate it
Custom-made makeup would be excellent! Then nobody would have to feel excluded.
I wore prescriptive for years, it was also good for pale and pasty to find a perfect match.
I LOVE these deep dives! I learn, I laugh... 💚✌🏻💄
Thank you! 🖤🖤🖤
Johnny Ross just did a podcast on the Allure awards...sus, to say the least! Would loooove a deep dive on those!
Oh yes I need to watch!! 🖤🖤🖤
I was afraid Kevin was going to stroke out for a minute about the Black Honey 😅
I haven't even seen this yet, but I am THRILLED someone has finally addressed the EL curse. Love you, Master Welsh.
Omg! Prescriptives was the first place I ever got makeup. I was a junior in high school and I looked so fresh because I could cover up all the red in my skin. I'm 45 now and it is literally the only foundation that I could get to stick to my face and not come off during the day.
Fantastic video, Robert, and well done for speaking up. Just look what Estee Lauder Companies Inc. has done to Bobbi Brown... their collection of blushes was amazing for range, quality, intensity of the pigments, now they are terrible. Same with the lipgloss, less shades, horrible new formula. Ojon is another victim, it was the best hair product line for dry, curly hair, lasted less than a year with them. And of course the decision to kill Prescriptives was short-sighted and ill-advised, unless they aimed to eliminate a rival to other brands under their umbrella such as Clinque?
"I just read that without thinking about that in my mind."😂 As someone with adhd, I resemble this remark.
Prescriptives was such a special brand. I remember getting my foundation and powder. And it had a unique scent. I also loved the perfume. The whole brand was so ahead it’s time from the custom formulas to the modern packaging. Really cool. Great video!!
Omg i have green olive undertones, the custom foundation sounds incredible 😳
Omg how amazing would perscriptives Been for you!!!
@@RobertWelsh I would've had a blast doing it too, it sounds fun😢
A friend absolutely swore by Prescriptives color matching. I loved their Calyx fragrance. Sad to see them go downhill.
They were killed off - didn’t “go downhill”
Normally it starts off alright at the beginning of the take over, then after a while you notice that your favourite products just aren't hitting the spot anymore... I think they must fiddle with the formulas slightly. Jo Malone is a perfect example of this.
I know that things seem to change when EL purchased Deciem brands, NIOD and The Ordinary being two of the popular ones. Very soon after, they had a significant price increase, and dropped several products, including their division called Hylamide that had some wonderful products. I decided to try some of Good Molecules products and found their formulas much better for my sensitive skin!
tbis eye look is SERVING
Thank you! 🖤🖤
I remember Prescriptives from high school and college and it was very different from anything out at that time it was super cool! Why can’t that exist now?
Your comment on Glam Glow with "oh you must!" Had me dying! I've never had my face hurt more than when I would use their masks.
2:18 "Touched by the Estee Lauder curse" - for a second I felt like I was watching a Monday makeup and ghost stories video. 😅
I miss prescriptives. It WAS perfect.
I used to looove Jo Malone. The best citrus fragrances in the market with wonderful candles. Then, Estee Lauder bought them. I turn around, instinctively ever since. This parent company ruins everything.
Good morning from Australia Robert!! Perfect way to procrastinate going to work 😂💜🖤
😂😂😂😂…… call in sick 👀…. No don’t ….. but maybe 👀
I loved Perspectives. I do not purchase any products that are tested on animals. And I don’t use EL ever. Now I know the other brands they own I’ll never purchase them either. Great Video and as always you look marvelous ❤
Over the years I’ve come to realize that a brand being purchased by EL is the kiss of death. EL makes one of my favorite fragrances ever, but I won’t buy it any longer. It’s the same with Coty - they buy a brand and muck it up or shut it down completely.
OMG I've not got youtube premium right now, so when that Rodin ad came on, as i'm multitasking (knitting W/O my specs) i swear she said 'Rodent oil'
😂😂 talk about stop n squint
I would get her to focus on Maxfactor 👀
😂
Perfect timing!I feel so sick today was looking for something really good to watch! You look amazing! I love the eye look with the highlighted scar so cool!
Thank you! Oh nooooo feel better soon!!!’
No wonder Tom Ford has the worst foundation, brushes and now blushes. And are ridiculously expensive. I have however gone back to being loyal to my E.L. foundation. This is crazy, no idea they owned so many 😮
Wow im a survivor and i had no clue about smashbox. I definitely wont be supporting them again.
I’m 63, wearing makeup almost 50 years and believe the best brands ever were Prescriptives and Ultima II. Maybe cosmetics brands don’t want to keep perfect product lines , prefer to keep us on the hunt for better and buying, buying, buying.
I may be a rare one but I have used Origins skincare for decades. I keep going back (nothing compares, I seriously have tried) but I hate that Estee Lauder bought them for cruelty free reasons.
Take me back to the days of the St.Ives apricot scrub.. the harder I scrub and the more it burns the better it will turn out on my fragile teenage skin 🤦♀️
That painted brow is so mesmerizing 🤤
I cried when they bought Bobbi Brown, after they’d already killed my beloved Prescriptives!
I know i been late for a min but i gotta say the colour in of your scar is a whole serve and a half!!!!! Love it
Tom Ford quads…insane cost but unbelievable quality BEFORE they were purchased. (That pre-Estee Honeymoon is a top 5 of mine) but after purchase, I’m just heartbroken (& richer for saving my money).
I’ve been wondering what happened to prescriptives! Thank you for discussing it! They would mix a foundation for you! It was such a bougie thing!
The Prescriptives custom foundation is still my favorite! Had the brand survived, it would probably be even better now, just because makeup has evolved so much since 2010.
I love to see you rocking the curly hair and the highlighting of you scar with different colours. It feels very you! ❤
I had no idea that Estee Lauder owned Dr Jart😱 But it feels like EL just buys a lot of successful companies but somewhere the original company loses its soul along the way. Or the soul gets sucked out of them. Like a beauty company vampire!😂sorry, I’m very tired.
We had Prescriptives in Allders, Croydon. I loved them and I miss it so much... 😔💔
Yes! I miss Allders and its beauty hall so much. Prescriptives' adverts had models who looked like they were drifting into the make up. No startling colours, just beautifully, perfectly matched.
Love your enthousiasm about the topic. Shows your passion.
Thank you! 🖤
Your videos keep me going 😩😩
Thank you for your teachings
I was a teenager in the 90s, and I was in LOVE with Prescriptives! That and Urban Decay totally made up my makeup aesthetic (although we didn't use that word in that way back then 😉). Their approach to foundation seemed revolutionary and they also had this illuminating, micro-fine, dewy primer-type product that made my young, smooth skin just glow. Ah, memories... 😁
Mr. Welsh, truly appreciate these informative videos.
I love your deep dives into these brands, especially as I'm not so educated in brands and stuff it's all new and interesting to me 💜🖤 Thank you for being informative and entertaining :)
Shopping for makeup while listening to Robert Welsh talk about makeup, is my new self care
I’m loving the makeup on the eyebrow! Just amazing
Mr. Welsh, this is the video I have been WAITING for. Thank you!
i love these videos, they’re informative but your charm really adds a lot of humor and fun :)
I just really dislike when Estee Lauder acquires a cruelty free brand because, as the parent company, they're not cruelty free (to my knowledge they still sell in China where their products/ingredients can be subjected to animal testing). I also really like some of their perfumes but can't use/purchase them for the same reason. I just don't think an animal should suffer for the sake of my vanity. There's just no need, so when it monopolises brands that are good cruelty free options, those options are taken away (not literally, obviously, but subjectively morally).
I’m the same - gutted when they get involved for the CF reasons you state. Wish they would just stay away.
Pretty sure china has relaxed its animal testing rules a bit in recent years
I totally agree, L’Oreal is the same case. I steer away from any brands they purchase.
No animal should suffer for the sake of a lipstick.
Preach! 👏🏼 I've always been curious on Robert's stance on animal testing in makeup
The UK doesnt allow it, it is banned, so thats that
I love how you incorporate your scar to the makeup look: very creative and it looks so good !!!! I want an eyebrow scar now !!!!
I LOVE your makeup today omg. So good!
I wish it was longer and deeper dive. Love this series
Loved Prescriptives when they were around. It did not break me out like Cover Girl or Maybelline. When store bought was limited and my skin would love it.
I am absolutely loving these vids
I had to pause right away to comment on this makeup look!! I love it!
Love how you have been styling your hair recently Robert ❤
Very interesting Robert.
Always felt the smashbox price tag didn't give me what I expected.
Love this style of content!
Need more deep dives, this was great ❤❤
I love these videos also love love the effect in "the brow " :)
