I inherited an ‘84 15’ console with a 60hp Merc from a buddy of mine that passed way too early. It needs a transom and tons of other love but I did take it on the Puget Sound and clocked 42mph with myself, 5gal of gas and a 6 pack. 40mph is more than fast enough on a boat this size. Cant wait to do to mine what you did to yours. The removable front seat is an absolute must.
I am the original owner of a 1976 sport 15 boston whaler with a 1976 70 evinrude in exellent condition, engine has been rebuilt, has bass seat on front and trolling motor.boat was rated for a 75hp motor when I bought this, with a stainless steel 17 pitch double cup she runs 45 mph and will pull up 2 slolem skier,You have done an exellent job fixing uo yours ,she really looks good..
Watched them all on this restoration. I've been considering plywood alternatives I'm sold on cossa board. I think you did a great job explaining your choice of method and the reasons for it. Thank you.
You can also get the trim indicator to work on the Garman as well I did it with my F 70 on my 15 you had to plug-in a wire back inside the engine on the port side. I’ll have to look at the motor again to remember what I had done.

Really enjoyed your boat building series. It’s is educational. It is a nice boat. Are you gonna sell it for a reasonable price? Please let me know. If I can afford it i would like to buy it. I’m from California but i could drive at your location and tow back home.

Thanks for this inspiring work. One question: Why did you mount the Garmin transducer on the starboard side? My Whaler manual (dated April 1989) recommends a transom mounted transducer be installed on the PORT side to function as a "mini-trim tab", which helps counteract the listing tendency induced by propeller torque.
I mounted it there because other 15’s with that power were mounted on the starboard side. I don’t think it would have enough strength to perform anything like a mini trim tab. That’s wishful thinking on Whalers part. Trim tabs are much larger and stronger. I haven’t noticed any listing at all. Regarding Whaler, They took many short cuts in rigging for example the battery boxes mounted in the stern where water collects. This allows water to travel down lose screws into the foam. Simply installing the battery forward under the console eliminates that issue as well as stern squat moving weight forward. They also only used chopped strand mat in the transom, they didn’t bond the transom core together (the boards). They didn’t use any woven roving (stitched mat) in that area either.. Whaler did a terrible job when it came to some design and rigging. It’s a great “little” boat now built much better and much stronger then new.
Good 40mph speed but maybe more with a steeper prop and one hole up or a Jack plate. I can also see the transducer spray. I lifted mine up a bit but don’t get depth at speed.
There is no middle channel (rigging tunnel) in the “Sport 15”… All rigging is run along the side. Whaler did have a center console 15 with a rigging tunnel, just not this model.
@@spinfish1434 Thanks much. 'Been working on my restoration off/on for a year and will be looking for F70 this spring to get in the water and enjoy. Your restoration channel was very helpful.
I just purchased a f70. Dealer stated my 1969 currituck needs a bracket. The currituck is essentially the same hull as yours. No clue why he's saying this. I currently have a 90hp 2 stroke 20inch without one. Any ideas?
The Dealer is wrong.. I would ask him why when there are many around the Country set up (F70) without a bracket. My buddy has the 16’ Hull, (same as yours) with a F70, no bracket, you can see it in my 2021 Highlights video! (Show him the video) *All the 16’s were identical hulls, only difference were the interiors.
@@spinfish1434 yea I left as soon as I heard 2k to mount the motor and run new nfb steering and throttle. Quick question. When installing the new steering did you find it easier to start at the motor and then run up to the helm? Or other way around? Awesome channel man, beautiful boat.
@@Frumundaair Wow $2k! It’s really crazy, scary how expensive it is now. I started at the motor and went forward but I don’t think it really matters, it’s pretty easy. Was a little tight in my console but worked out fine. Thanks for watching. I hope to get some new content up soon!
Most Classic Whaler hulls do have “some” water in the foam. There are very very few that would be considered waterlogged. You can tell if the deck has soft spots and or a squishy feel, sits low in the water. Also weighing the hull and comparing the weight to Whalers spec weight. On my particular hull I could lift the stern quarter up, the entire deck is rock solid. The serious issue was the transom which I replaced in the series..
The listed weight through Yamaha is 253lbs. It’s the max weight for a 15’ .. If I had a 1965 16’ - 17’ the F70 would be my first choice, it has plenty of power and probably Yamaha’s best motor power to weight ratio.. My second choices would be the lighter Suzuki DF60hp and or the Mercury 60.. If the Mercury 60R comes in a longer shaft length then I’d choose it… Having said all that these hulls are weight sensitive, I would Not go any higher in weight on the transom. I’ll have more update videos coming on this project, please Subscribe!
No, but I did get the engine used and my friend plugged in a gauge and was able to get hours (184)… I’m not concerned, these engines will run over 4000 hours.

I lifted the Transducer after that video, no more spray. 40 is all I need. If I want speed I’ll get an old Hydro-Stream vector with a 150-200. 😂
