    Your instructional videos are always good but this was especially comprehensive. I've done a lot of research on line but in 8 minutes you answered all of my questions. (and some questions I didn't know I'd had.) Finding watercolor sketchbooks with good paper here in Turkey is almost impossible, so I've been buying loose sheets of paper and sewing them into simple sketchbooks. I make them thin so I can try a wide variety of paper.

    I used to exclusively use Arches. But last year during covid lockdown I could not find any. So I tried Fabriano 100% cotton extra white hot press. I had never used hot press either. I FELL IN LOVE.💜💜💜 I have used Fabriano hot press for a year now and I am never going back.

    I can’t afford arches here in china so the best option is Baohong. I use both hot pressed and medium texture and I’m happy with them

    Re: Question about favorites:
    Personal preferences in watercolor paper: For greeting cards I mainly use Canson Montvaul, or the Strathmore ready cut sheets in the 5 x 7 inch size .. For potentially "frameable" art I prefer Arches .. .. I prefer 140 lb paper .. cold press ..although the Strathmore ready cut hot press is nice as well.. This is mostly due to these are the papers I have become accustomed to.. know how they behave ... and fit with my style of watercolor.

    Since I am in Germany I mostly use Hahnemühle. They have many different papers but I use the Collection Cold Pressed for work involving glazing and lifting, masking fluid etc. and the Expression Cold Pressed for more expessive work. Both are 100% cotton and 300 gsm, of course! 😊

    • @schuhujin5019
      @schuhujin5019 3 года назад +4

      I am in Germany, too, and I love that Hahnemühle is trying new eco friendly ways with more sustainable materials than cotton. I like the bamboo Version very much. It is only called "mixed media" but I like to use it for watercolor, though I am not an expert, but I have some experience. In asia I would expect some bamboo Paper too, or should that be a hahnemühle specialty? Recently they even offer an agave Paper (with 30% cotton) especially for watercolour. I am in the process of testing it and find it soft and it feels and behaves a little bit as hotpressed rather than coldpressed. But the granulation shows nicely. Btw they offer an hemp sketching paper which I didn't try.

      @@schuhujin5019 I know about the bamboo paper from Hahnemühle but have not yet seen the agave or the hemp paper. Thank you for letting me know! 😘🥰😍 I will definitely look into these and give them a try! 🧡😊

      Hahnemühle is top notch paper. In so far I tried the carnet de voyage with Bamboo paper and the Leonardo block which comes with 600 gsm paper. I was in awe for both products. Unfortunately the price was a little bit steep for the latter in particular.

    I'm a die-hard fan of the Saunders-Waterford HP paper in high white. I do mixed media (watercolor + color pencils) illustrations and it performs well, consistently. I do also use the CP when I'm just doing watercolors, however. I tend to be quite heavy-handed in terms of water and both the HP & CP hold up so well.
    Just a quick tip (although, I'm sure most people already know this) - when doing watercolor + color pencils, do the color pencils after you're done with the watercoloring. Color pencils are usually either oil or wax-based so that will create a barrier that won't allow the laying down of watercolor :)
    I know a lot of people always say this, but you really can get away with watercolors or brushes that may not be top of the line but you will be VERY frustrated with your painting experience if you skimp on paper quality. I've found this to be very true.
    Thanks so much, Teoh for the overview. This series covered all the bases and will definitely help people make more informed choices before painting. Ultimately, people are all different and will have to find out through trial and error what works best for them!

    Excellent review, as always! I have used student-grade paper like Canson and Strathmore but once I tried Arches and Legion Stonehenge I was hooked. I especially love the Arches cold pressed blocks. Your description of how watercolour reacts to the different papers and their finishes was very informative. Your paintings and sketches are wonderful! Thank you for everything you review and inspire us with ❤️🇨🇦

    Hello. I was thinking that I should change the type of water color paper a little, but this video helped me a lot.
    I used Arsch off-white paper with a 160g sketchbook. I will try using a thicker 300g.
    The explanation was good, but it was also fun to appreciate the drawings drawn in the sketchbook.
    I am always thinking of sharing good videos so I will always appreciate them. ^^

    This is sorta off topic, but in the van gogh watercolor range, there's a color called transparent yellow medium with an astm rating of excellent. the part that makes it obscure is that it seems to be the only watercolor source of that pigment.

    Somehow, I'm into personal preference and availability. After using Canson, which I like and is available here in the Philippines, I'm trying out the Fabriano cold pressed 25% cotton watercolor for the first time. I might test it more because my first attempt to do a painting with gouache before watercolor went 👎🏽, but so far, I'm liking it. It would go well with Canson.

    I just bought a spiral bound pad of 35 pages A4 of their non-cotton brand on special offer for 4.30€, and it has a very sensitive surface, but seems to work well for urban sketching/ line and wash where you don't fiddle much with it.

    Hi Teoh, could you make a video about pros & cons of having many paints from different brands? I'm new to watercolor and very happy with my Mijello Mission Gold and I want to explore other brands, but don't have enough justification to spend more money even though I know I'm buying quality paints. But somehow a lot of artists on youtube have a lot of paints from different brands, if you know what I mean.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  3 года назад +1

      There are other brands with quality paint so it's alright to mix

    • @mald379
      @mald379 3 года назад +1

      RUclipsrs are different breed of artists, they need all the paint to make tests and share their thoughts and comparisons of different products in their video. If you love your Mijellos - stick to them. You can always check what pigments they have and if theres a pigment thats not in their line but is in different brand you can always get a single tube. Dont get into a trap of buying million of different paints because you will never finish them and its sounds youre happy with what you have. Its same with beauty youtubers - they have hundreds of beauty product but no regular, non-youtube person needs that in their life. :)
