I use the back of the Baohong CP when doing line and wash or if I want a smoother surface but with less grain. Next on my shopping list is the HP paper, once I’ve depleted my Arches HP. The academy cold press is spectacular! I’ve seen washes go on so smooth and there’s so little buckling. The paper actually absorbs the paint! I bought them in 22 x 30 sheets and it’s very cost effective.
I finally subscribed today. so many of the things I researched kept going to your page and you do excellent reputable reviews that I just had to subscribe. thank you for all the work you put into your videos! they have been a great resource for me in watercoloring beginnings.
Been interested in this paper for quite a while! I've been looking for more in-depth and recent reviews of this. Glad to know of your review on this paper! Will be buying this soon then.
In Australia we don't have either the artist or the student but an Australian company imports something called Baohong Masters choice. I thing it's artist grade buy repackaged. I the mostly use the hot press but sometimes the cold press. Both are excellent, I love the hot press. The blocks are about one third of the price of arches. If I didn't have access to Baohong paper I know I couldn't afford to paint as much. Maybe not at all.
Thank you for this review! I've been wondering about Baohong paper for a while as it's such a reasonable price compared to other artist grade papers available here in Australia. Your artwork on the student grade paper is stunning! 😊
Thank you Teoh! I use Arches and Fabriano myself. I need a good yet inexpensive 100% rag paper for my 11 year old granddaughter, who is showing increased interest in art. I realize from painting decades in watercolor that her ability to be successful will rely on on a good quality paper.
@@teohyc Thank youTeoh! Upon viewing your review and another I did order the Baohong paper. I just received 2 blocks of Baohong academy paper for my granddaughter plus small postcard sample sheets for me to try out!
I’ve noticed the Hot press is like general Cold press and the Cold press is semi-Rough. I prefer hot press for sketchbooks since I’m just adding color to quick Sketches and not pouring water all over the pages. It’s called a Sketchbook for a reason. In house, I prefer Cold press blocks for, well, watercolor, where I’ll be doing washes and using granulating / super granulating paint. The Baohong texture is just right. I highly recommend the paper too & there isn’t noticeable difference between Student & Artist. Great video!
Looking forward to this. Been using Canson and Fabriano aquarelles for a while and they are all bad. For a 100% cotton paper for cheap price, it's a big steal.
Thanks for that review, Teoh! I am a Hot Press fan myself, so I will be trying out the student grade. I will be interested in seeing you use the Hot Press in your videos. That small painting on the student grade was GORGEOUS!
I seem to have a seesawing interest with Baohong watercolor paper. It's surprisingly cheap even for a 100% cotton paper, but it's been said that it has no sizing (presumably why it was cheap), meaning it can be quite unpredictable with absorbing water and pigment. It's why I was reluctant to that at first. That and I already have enough watercolor paper. (Which I haven't painted most of them yet, and could potentially lose their sizing sooner or later. 😅) Last year, I have dabbled on poster paint and gouache, and earlier this year, I got a set of the much hyped Miya Himi jelly gouache. I had painted with these paints even on cardstock and regular print paper, so maybe sizing is less of an issue for me. Vibrancy on the other hand... I don't know if sizing is an issue for gouache for others there, but with your review of the Baohong paper, it has regained my interest in getting it, and recommending it, provided I use up my other papers. Thanks for the review, Mr. Teoh, and have a Merry Christmas!🎄
Where I live, a lot of people Baohong! Some like academy more than artist but I love both depends on the art work... The only downside is.. it tends to appear a little yellowish compared to some other cotton watercolor paper brand... I hesitated for quite sometime But after using it for a while, I don't think it changes my paint colors.. So I keep using them
Pretty sure they make “The Perfect Sketchbook” out of Baohong. Not sure if it’s student or Artist. ( limited edition is Fabriano I think). Looks like the Student paper is a bit more White. I’m going to buy the student grade. Thank you for zooming in! Very helpfully! Love your art! 👍🙏🏻🖌
Hi Teoh! I am looking at your review thinking I must have purchased my Academy B., cold pressed 100% 5x7 block about 3weeks ago from a different company or received a bad batch of ?? cotton, unsized paper. My experience was quite the opposite as the paper dried quickly, which made color blending very difficult. Harsh water lines developed and smoothing them by resetting was impossible. Even when I soaked the paper block with water it buckled and leaked onto the page below, yet there was not change in blending my paints, as the paints still did not moving. My QoR paints which normally disperse extremely well on other WC paper barely dispersed. The company has to have changed paper suppliers as my 5x7 block is a dud!! It gets 1* from me as 0 is not an option. May try it with gouache as it requires less water?!?!…🤷🏽♀️🤦🏾♀️🤷🏽♀️😔
Hi Teoh, I don't know if you know this, but do you know if there is a difference between Boahong artist grade watercolour paper and Boahong Master's choice watercolour paper or are they one of the same with a different cover? The Master's choice watercolour paper cover has Watercolour artist's such as Joseph Zbukvic, Alvaro Castagnet and others on it. Sorry to put you on the spot. Thank you.
Ive been wanting to try these but i already have to much paper and Im afraid of my other paper going bad. If you know how to fix sizing in paper that has gone bad could you make a video about it? I mean im sure you get lots of requests so only if its something you have time for and are interested in of course. Great video. Thanks for sharing:)
It's best not to keep watercolour paper for too long since it can absorb moisture from the air and affect the sizing. Fixing the sizing later on with sizing liquid or sizing paste will not bring back the original performance of the paper. I have a video on that. ruclips.net/video/hL6HZvHF1mY/видео.html
I have only trusted Arches in terms of quality and reliability even after years of storage. The question is the foreshortening coating of the surface of the Baohong watercolor paper would last. Like I don’t store much Fabriano watercolor paper because the foreshortening coating oxidizes around two years later.
@@teohyc Watercolor pigment is just absorbed on the cotton material, resulting in dull colors or behavior of pigments to be just bad. I should say the "sizing" coat is oxidizes.
I store Arches, Saunders, Fabrizio and Baohong in a basement and have never had a problem. I store them in flat files with bags of desiccant. I think keeping them dry is the key to preventing the sizing from changing ( I also run a dehumidifier in the warm months. Thanks for the student grade v artist grade baohong paper review! I have been using the student grade and wondered what the difference was. I will quierie no further. I too have been quite happy with the student grade. Meey Christmas to Ms. Tiffany!! A happy new year to you and your family!
@@suzalasuzala1135 Since I live in a tropical country like the Philippines, Fabriano and Saunders sizing will fail within 2 years. Somehow Arches lasts longer - even the last of my 185G/SQM Arches roll I made into a sketchbook is perfectly fine. So I’m curious if the Bauhong has good sizing coat so I can recommend to my students to use - only time will tell. I just bought an entire 44” 300G/SQM Arches roll knowing I can still use them years to come for big paintings.
@@drawingarchitecture hi, I too teach, but...art! it's funny because I keep hearing that Arches sizing for a while was failing miserably. People were getting uneven paint absorption, or none at all with resist like splotches. Go figure. In the warmer months in NY in my basement it can often run 93 degrees with 90% humidity for days. I can't imagine how you keep mold off your paints or papers where you live! My sympathies to your situation! ( but, happy holidays to you)
You can. But the paper is thick so the folded pages will spread out. Usually for sketchbooks and booklets, 200gsm instead of 300gsm watercolour paper is used.
I make a DIY sketchbook from artist baohong 300 gsm paper. I use only one per signature, instead of 2 or 3 sheets per signature, because it is thick already, and then use coptic stitch method and then perfect bind it for stronger structure.
Good. To know! Is there a way you could do a tutorial on how to approach an urban sketch from a photo? I watch all of your videos but still struggling on where to begin with a photo and proper angles.
Using a photo means the composition is already fixed by the photographer so it's important to choose the right photo. One that shows off the physical form (e.g. silhouette, light shadow) of the subject. Generally speaking, just draw the biggest shape or longest line first. I've many tutorials from the tutorial playlist ruclips.net/p/PLucoL_7WoAgDD3iul6Me6RIruU_UyhKDO
I used the student grade paper to paint some landscape. As a beginner I sometimes end up doing the wet on wet 4-5 times. And what happens is that the paper starts coming off. I wonder if it’s the same on artist grade.
I buy it online from alliexpress i pay for 4 diffrent sizes watercolour blocks 77,68 euro,s. I am using fine grain. I paint whit acrylic paint on them. I love the fine grain paper. I find its better for painting whit acrylic paint. I love you,re drawing🖐🏾😃
Hi Teoh, thank you for all your informative videos! I've followed you for some time and have learned much from you. I'm sorry to hijack this thread of comments :) but wonder if you might advise me on something: I am not an expert sketcher nor a novice, somewhere in between, and I want to purchase a simple, portable drawing tablet with full screen and good pen, USB charged, and does not require a glove (I want to be able to rest my hand if need be) and preferably priced at $200 or below (if that's possible). I have watched your tablet review videos and read many reviews on Parka Blogs, but I am rather confused about what tablet you would recommend per my specifications above. If you have a moment, I would very much appreciate your recommendation. THANK YOU! :)
The only one that’s near the price range is the Samsung Tab A8 with S Pen but that’s from 2019. Alternative would be those pen displays that need to connect to computers. For US$200 you can get around 12-13 inches. www.parkablogs.com/content/artist-review-samsung-tab-80-s-pen-2019
I used BOHONG ARTIST paper almost a year ago.. I was soooo impressed how good this paper it became my no 1 watercolor paper Fabriyano was ok and Arches was disappointing and expensive... I love baohong cold pressed 👍👍👍
Curious : I'm from Spain and this is the MORE EXPENSIVE watercolor paper, is no way I'm gonna get it, when any other, including from the best brands, is infinitelly more convenient, reliable, tested, trusty, better quality, I can complain and return it, ... And cheaper ! I suppose it depends on where we live. I made time ago a very simple Excel spreadsheet with price per square meter, to compare offers. Merry Christmas to all of you !
@@UJB123 Well, we have cotton producers in my own province, but the main producer in Europe is Greece. I would have saved a lot of time and frustration if all of the artist-RUclipsrs with "how to paint" videos would have just been up front and said, "don't mind watching the rest of this video unless you FIRST spend $400 on a couple new sable brushes, because your paintings will never look this good with any other brushes".
I mean in my opinion, I followed those videos and did decently with my cheaper materials. I have affordable Royal & Langnickel brushes, they worked great. (Maybe spent $11?) My paint was really bad quality but I didn't know that as a beginner haha. It all comes down to good WC paper, and as long as your brushes don't shed extremely, the cheaper options can be good.
@@krabfingers8473 I hear you, I guess my frustration is that a lot of RUclips painters use high-end paper plus real sable brushes, but don't bother to say that you can't closely mimic the painting with other materials. I had to learn it the hard way. Even the same artist can do two paintings side by side, one with student grade one with artists grade and you'll see a clear difference, but again they NEVER mention this in their tutorial videos.
@@davepane7306 Yeah I agree with you on that! I didn’t know the materials could’ve changed the painting outcome drastically. I mean now I know, sadly can’t afford most of the expensive supplies still.

Maybe one day I'll be brave enough of feel well enough...but more surgeries coming up so just trying to not focus on the $600 monthly bill just to have insurance because even one step down took away all the specialty doctors that aren't optional for me...plus of course a couple thousand we pay out of pocket till that's done, so, yea, its stressful. My husband tries so hard and I have a lot of guilt over it though he reminds me of the hard on myself thing again :/ but its a lot when there's not much money coming in. So I agree, its hard to deal with both and sadly so many people all over do :/ but...sorry...that was depressing...so sorry!
But yes, I'm excited for any suggestions and I can't wait to look for your channel!
I truly thank all of you who do SO much work to record, make art, edit😖 and upload so many beautiful things for us to enjoy and be inspired by!! So thankful for it!!!!
Hope you and your family are happy and healthy and doing fun stuff this weekend :)
Thanks again!!!
@@SketchesnScrubs you're so sweet🥺(good tears, not bad) yea, I'm working on the self hate and self doubt...always been my life due to some bad stuff...but I would love to help someone know they're not alone and how much being creative in all sorts of ways, can save your brain and help you focus on positive things.
So, I'm trying :) and I appreciate, more then you'll ever know, your encouraging words🥺truly!!
Thank you🥰
Have a wonderful weekend!!!!🍻🤘🌼🍾🥂
I really enjoy working with both artist grade and Academy. I LOVE the artist grade "rough" paper. Very nice! Glad you did this review. Very helpful!
Maybe not at all.
your work looks absolutely gorgeous on this paper! so vibrant, the colors, textures, granulation!
Thank you for this review! I've been wondering about Baohong paper for a while as it's such a reasonable price compared to other artist grade papers available here in Australia. Your artwork on the student grade paper is stunning! 😊
Just buy it, you won't regret it. I get mine from Seniors Art Supplies.
@@grannieannie1371 Thank you. I'll have a look there very soon. 😊
Thank you Teoh! I use Arches and Fabriano myself. I need a good yet inexpensive 100% rag paper for my 11 year old granddaughter, who is showing increased interest in art. I realize from painting decades in watercolor that her ability to be successful will rely on on a good quality paper.
Baohong is good. Or look for Khadi Papers (India) sketchbooks. Or get large watercolour sheets and cut them to smaller size yourself.
Was waiting for a review of de Baohong paper for a while now, thank you, much appreciated
Wonderful review. I am going to forward this to all my artist classmates.
I wish Baohong was available in extra white! Try Arto 100% cotton watercolour paper next!
Last year, I have dabbled on poster paint and gouache, and earlier this year, I got a set of the much hyped Miya Himi jelly gouache.
The professional grade definitely has sizing. It is lovely to paint on,
@@grannieannie1371 Convincing 👌🏽
Where I live, a lot of people Baohong! Some like academy more than artist but I love both depends on the art work... The only downside is.. it tends to appear a little yellowish compared to some other cotton watercolor paper brand... I hesitated for quite sometime But after using it for a while, I don't think it changes my paint colors.. So I keep using them
Hi !! Thank you for your review !! I am curious to know what do you think about Paul rubens 100 % coton sketchbook ?
Pretty sure they make “The Perfect Sketchbook” out of Baohong. Not sure if it’s student or Artist. ( limited edition is Fabriano I think). Looks like the Student paper is a bit more White. I’m going to buy the student grade. Thank you for zooming in! Very helpfully! Love your art! 👍🙏🏻🖌
This paper is a great discovery. I love the hot press version.
Thanks for this review! I now feel confident in using this paper. Have you used it more? How was your experience after finishing the pads?
Wow… thank you Teoh, will definitely try these papers out… love you confident strokes…
Love your looseness, colors & compos ition
I was curious about this paper. Definitely going to try now you showed all in detail. Thanks for your great work, as always!
I love your reviews! I hope you will continue to do more🙏
Thanks Teoh. I love this paper as a more affordable option that performs well and takes a lot of abuse no problems.
Ohhhh the sketchbook that I did a tour of is student grade. 🤭 I thought they only had one grade of paper.
your video is very interesting, useful and helpful too.
Seems like great paper but not so cheap in the USA! Wonderful review though!
Thank you.
I’m not sure. Generally speaking there are only student and artist, so just two. My guess is Master is also Artist grade.
@@teohyc no worries. Thank you Teoh.
Is the student grade smoother than Strathmore's 400 series watercolor 300gsm?
Can you compare hot pressed acedemy and artist grade too?
Happy New Year !
What grade are the 14.6" x 394" rolls of Baohong watercolor 100% cotton? This video leads me to believe it is Academy grade.
I have only trusted Arches in terms of quality and reliability even after years of storage. The question is the foreshortening coating of the surface of the Baohong watercolor paper would last. Like I don’t store much Fabriano watercolor paper because the foreshortening coating oxidizes around two years later.
So what happens when the paper oxidizes?
( but, happy holidays to you)
Teoh, thank you for this video.
Wht type of pen u r using for sketches I mean the brand of the black pen
Pelikan m200
Thank you!
Hi.. Teoh, was thinking about getting some of this paper,do you think I could fold it and make little travel journal booklets?
You can. But the paper is thick so the folded pages will spread out. Usually for sketchbooks and booklets, 200gsm instead of 300gsm watercolour paper is used.
@@teohyc yes thanks,love your channel 😎
They sell sketchbooks, both hot and cold press. 24 sheets, iirc.
I've many tutorials from the tutorial playlist

It looks really good for those who can find it.
Can someone please tell me if Baohong Paper is sized using gelatin or starch?
I used the student grade paper to paint some landscape. As a beginner I sometimes end up doing the wet on wet 4-5 times. And what happens is that the paper starts coming off. I wonder if it’s the same on artist grade.
Are you using Baohong student paper too?
@@teohyc yea i am :)
wondeful video thank you.
@@teohyc Thanks so much for replying and for the recommendation. Regards to you and yours, Teoh!
11:10... Goodness, those colours! 🤩
Are they both archival?
Yes
I used BOHONG ARTIST paper almost a year ago..
I was soooo impressed how good this paper it became my no 1 watercolor paper
Fabriyano was ok and Arches was disappointing and expensive...
I love baohong cold pressed 👍👍👍
Thx for vid
I like the way you colored the leaves, but i dont the granulation in watercolor like the color of the sky
That’s because of EU VAT , tariff and such. It’s to keep business within EU markets. Bare in mind, cotton doesn’t grow in Europe … just saying.
@@UJB123 Well, we have cotton producers in my own province, but the main producer in Europe is Greece. On the other hand, even 100% watercolor papers from USA and other parts of the World outside Europe were cheaper, but I didn't check prices for a while now, so, I can't talk too much about today's market, that was a year ago. Happy painting and, Cheers !
@@davepane7306 my art tutor always say, you controll tge media, it's the hand behind it, not the tools. So he always teach with cheap materials. However he does suggest to buy artist paints because they aee directly applied as the art itself. Papers and brushes can be whatever.
For me personally, I love Baohong artist and have used them for a year now. I have other papers like potentate, canson, leyton, for collections and practices but I love Baohong artist the most. I do not use archea or saunders because tooo expensive. With Baohong artist, i can get good quality cotton paper without burning my wallet.
Baohong is not cheap anymore!!
very good review!
