    We use semi-gloss for practically everything. It has a nice sheen and is easy to clean. Flat paints are drab.

    • @nafnaf0
      @nafnaf0 9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah I agree, you need some sheen on the interior walls. Satin or Eggshell. I use eggshell for all my interior walls, even bathrooms and kitchen. Semigloss for interior trim / doors. Eggshell also has enough durability that it can be cleaned, but doesn't look shiny. It also is low enough sheen that spot touch-ups can be done without having to re-paint the whole wall (it doesn't have so much sheen that it requires a wet edge)

    Damn.. I really needed all types of painting advice back in 2018 when I was trying to select paint colors for my living room/dining area. I went with something that really didn't suit me after I got it onto the walls, but it wasn't so bad, like, I wanted to repaint right away lol it sufficed. I live in the bay area of Cali... My house is a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, huge 21x40 garage and sits on a cement slab built in early the 50's, not the original garage, added on, but the rooms in the house are small. All 3 bedrooms get natural lighting and I am searching for colors and your vids have been, SO helpful. I started painting when I was 12, painted my own bedroom, often, but thanks for going into detail.

    Paint People: My Benjamin Moore store recommended semi-gloss Scuff-x for the trim/doors, which is what I did. Two BM stores recommended the Scuff-x over ANY other paint they sold (i.e. Aura, Regal, etc). The trim turned out great btw. But I read on some painter's chatboard that Scuff-X sheen is one higher than normal, so Sucuff-x Eggshell is really Satin, etc. I live on a hill where house has many windows and constant California light [East (main), South (side), West (main)]. The walls have texture, so what BM model would you use and what sheen?....

    thanks for the helpful content you put out on your channel. I have 2 questions:
    1. when choosing paint finish, what finish should be used on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities or doors. If we are using Eggshell on the walls, would we use semi gloss on the cabinets and doors as well as the base boards?
    2. We have molding on the walls, we are going to paint them the same color. It was suggested we use different finishes. So here, if we use Eggshell for the wall, should we use semi gloss on the trim on the wall (that we are painting the same color)?

    • @thepaintpeople

      Either is good. Depends on your preference. For ceilings, bathrooms tend to be moist places, and flat or matte paint will begin to grow mold or mildew much faster than other paint sheens, so I'd still go satin on the ceilings too.

    Hi, thanks for the video.
    I'm closing on a home which doesn't have as much light coming through because of windows location.
    We're flipping the house from floor to ceiling.
    What sheen would you recommend for walls(light gray), new baseboards(white), new doors/window trims (white), new cabinets(bottom half navy bluish, top half white), new room doors (white) and new closet doors (white). Yes we're gonna paint all of these mentioned above. We're gonna use an airless paint sprayer.
    Thanks!

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  3 года назад +1

      Traditionally, eggshell on the walls was used most often because of its durability, but I might recommend it because it helps reflect light a bit, providing some texture. As for the cabinets, I really enjoy satin. Doors and frames, semi-gloss, so you have enough of a Sheen difference between the walls and trim. Hope this helps!

I plan to prime with the ZINSSER BIN Shellac Primer, but am unsure about what paint to use overtop. And what base would you recommend (water based, oil based). The shelves would be painted white and will not endure lots of movement but may get wet from watering the plants.

    I always used semigloss on our walls, because we have a daycare and they touch the walls constantly. I always considered the semigloss easier to clean. With vaulted ceilings and tall walls, repainting the whole thing for a 3 foot section on the bottom seems like a bad move.

Say... dark wood-look floors, white marbled-look countertops, white-patterned backsplash, and... you’re super close to selling me on - Benjamin Moore’s Salamander for my cabinets?... and then gold hardware. I like drama, but do you recommend that color for the kitchen? So, 2 questions, I suppose. What color of deep green paint; & what finish would look best? I’m hoping for a Wow-look that’s not overwhelming (BM’s Hunter Green) as the focal point.

      Normally flat is sufficient. You could go with something like scuff-x if you want more durability, but nothing is really going to stand up to garden tools banging on the walls. Haha.

      @@thepaintpeople thanks very helpful! I might just go with flat then. My contractor told me he will have to charge double to do eggshell vs flat, since he has to do one additional coating if we did eggshell. Not sure if that is true.

    Questions: I was thinking about going with the classic grey for my walls and chantilly lace for the trim, thoughts? If I did go with this combo, should I paint my ceiling the same chantilly white? I mean, should you be matching trim and ceiling colors? Oh and one last question, I couldn’t find a primer video of yours so, what’s the best primer to use?
    Thank you very much,
    Tyler

      Matching you trim colour with your ceiling is what I would recommend most often. Here is a link to our primer vid.

    Most pictures with tongue and groove ceilings look like they are maybe satin instead of flat. I can’t decide what to use. I have matte on the wall and satin on the trim of a north facing mudroom. What would you recommend? Thank you!

      Use the same color as a wall in a different sheen it will look beautiful like matte or eggshell on the wall and satin or semi-gloss on the Trim ♥️

    Great video! I have a not-very-sunny and small studio apartment (west facing; low floor in Midtown Manhattan).
    It’s painted in BM Linen White, probably eggshell. I’d like to brighten up the room with a lighter color and maybe higher sheen to reflect more sunlight but want to keep the warm glow and don’t want stark white walls. What color(s) do you recommend from BM?
    Thanks, Gabriel.

    What’s the best way to match a finish of an unknown paint on your wall?

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  2 года назад

      Hi Cristina, touchups almost never work unless you paint corner to corner rather than smaller spots in the middle of a wall. I normally say there is about a three month window of opportunity from the time you initially painted to the time it’s still OK to touchup. Walls get dirty, paint finishes fade, there’s just too many variables to factor in, and that’s not even taking proper, even application into account.

    Thanks for the information on paint finishes. Our house has that nasty sprayed on popcorn crap from the 1970s or 1980s. Do you have any paint recommendations for these ceilings? We painted some years ago, and it took a LOT of paint. I cannot spend the time or money to remove it. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

      If the stucco ceilings have already been painted, you can now use a water based ceiling paint directly over top.

    The builder of my subdivision painted all the interior doors what I am assuming is high gloss. Way too much shine for my taste. I would like to have them all resprayed in another color of white and change the finish to Satin. I am going to assume that they would need to be primered first because of the high gloss.

    I am curious if one were going to paint the walls/ceilings and the trim the same color, would you still use different finishes for each them or stick with the same finish for all surfaces? Or would you still recommend the skip one rule for the trim?

      I would go with a pearl/satin finish. Matte won't hold up to well long term.

    Hi! I've watched many of your videos and each was helpful as I chose the paint and finish in my house.But I need your opinion. I want to paint my house with the Sherwin Williams Snowbound color but I'm not sure about the finish. Should I go with Satin, Eggshell or Semi-gloss? I see according to your video I should do semi glass for the trim but which finish should I go with for the entire house?

      It's up to your taste, but eggshell has that durability without being too shiny so it's good for all over the house.

    Hello, I am a noob painter ready to get down and dirty with making these old walls in my house look brand new!
    I have a question for you; Do any of the glosses play a role in preventing mold in rooms, such as a bathroom or kitchen? I got semi-gloss for all the rooms to repaint - kitchen, bathroom, and an enclosed porch (has no insolation).
    I was told that I would want an exterior paint for the enclosed porch that I described, where they right?
    But I picked semi-gloss because I somehow got the idea that it's what you paint your walls with! But then what type of paint do I use for my trim??? Would you recommend a matte?
    Thank you in advance! :)

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  2 года назад +2

      Hi Amber! The higher the sheen the more durable the paint, so people often use semi gloss for trim and doors as they are more prone to scuffs. People often use matte/flat for ceilings because it hide flaws but some people like the look of it on their walls. Really, it's all about what look you prefer. Exterior paint is recommended for outdoors because it's designed to withstand the elements more. Hope that helps!

    Home Depot didn't have any more matte in my mixed colour, so they said flat was "the same". Well, you know it ISN'T. In the middle of a huge wall I had a gloss-no gloss seam. But, you can use an almost dry brush/roller to iron out the seam and it disappears! And if anyone thinks one end of the wall is shinier than the other end, although they can't find the seam, you can tell them they're losing their minds.

    I have a question! I’m refining my kitchen with white cabinets. I want the cabinets and trim to be pure white. My ceilings “accidentally@ got painted extra white. Will this work out or should I fix it. Also, I was coining to use matte on my wall and semi gloss on my trim. Can I get away with this? My kitchen has paneling around the ear in kitchen area. I’m nervous about semi gloss on the cabinets and trim and paneling. With this be too much shine?

    We live off-grid with no electric lighting. We have lots of natural light, and use oil lamps after dark. We are considering high gloss CEILINGS to reflect that light and bounce it around the room. We are considering satin for our walls, which will be covered in art. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  2 года назад +2

      Totally personal taste Kamille! I've seen high gloss ceilings look really cool and satin is totally cool for walls. The only thing to keep in mind is the higher the sheen the more it will show texture/imperfections. So, high gloss looks awesome on crown moldings for example, but if you're ceilings have bumps and grooves you're trying to hide, the gloss will highlight those.

    DO you follow this same rule if you're painting the walls and trim the same color. I'm considering using same finish, Satin, for the walls and the trim and I'm using the same color for both Vintage Pewter, it's part of the Behr line...equivalent to Sherwin Williams Revere Gray I believe. The ceilings will be white eggshell or matte finish.

    • @thepaintpeople

      Thank you for your question. I would use different finishes on the walls and trim, even when using the same color on both. If you really were looking for a consistent sheen on both, I might go the other way and find a very washable matte or eggshell to use on both. Satin walls would likely look far too shiny and enhance any imperfections that the walls may have. Hope this helps!
