    I recently replaced the timing chain and gears in my '93 460 powered f250. I figured that wrestling with three gaskets dressed with rtv while trying to get the water pump into that intermediate hose might be a bit challenging. So, I did mine in stages.
    I bought two sets of different length bolts. One set was to hold the plate to the cover while the rtv dressed gasket dried/adhered. The other set was to hold the timing cover to the block without the water pump installed so those rtv dressed gaskets could have time to dry/adhere. Another thing that helped was test fitting the new intermediate hose onto the new water pump. I eventually resorted to using silicone spray to get it to slide on. I was really glad that I was not fighting with that for the first time while trying to install it. After the rtv had dried and the removal of the temporary bolts, the timing cover/plate assembly did not move at all while installing the new water pump. I think that the added investment of about $3 in bolts made the job go a lot smoother.

    How do you prevent the engine from spinning once you have it in top dead center ?

    great video. doing this job now. what kind of sealant did you apply to the through bolts, from the water pump to the engine block?

    What sealant you recommend? Do you put sealant on every Gasket> The Parts guy told me not to use silicone?? Doing mine this weekend. Thank you nice Video.

    Thanks for the video. Now before I get too far back ahead I need to re tighten my cam bolt. I only torqued it to 25 ft. Lbs😂😂😂😅 guess its time to dig the manual back and see what else I over torqued or under torqued lol

    mine had a "large" spacer/washer. 1989 f30 460.. i believe it went on after crank. tore it apart a while ago. any ideas where it went for sure?

    1986 f250 with the 460. I've rebuilt the carb, and I've done cap, plugged, wires. Truck runs rich. Tough to start. Would the timing chain be a possible culprit?

  • @damnedin82

    How is the harmonic damper a press fit on the crankshaft, when it's butting up against the counter weight? Is the crankshaft tapered? What am I missing here?

  • @maxallen7610
    @maxallen7610 5 лет назад +2

    Thank you! Just realized that the water pump backing plate was completely missing from my 460 (1987 f250). I thought the space in the timing cover looked like a poor place for water to flow. I also thought it was strange that my new water pump came with two gaskets... Mystery solved. Why the heck would someone leave that out? No wonder it was overheating at high rpm.
    What tool were you using to tighten the damper?

    • @vintagespeed
      @vintagespeed  5 лет назад

      oof! that's terrible! most likely they tossed out the backing plate along with the water pump and didn't realize it was needed...? must've been leaking pretty bad.

    Thanks for the Video. I was also wondering if the chain is stretched won't it also make the engine run warm even though the gauge says it good ?

    Ive got an 89 Ford F350 with 460 it's got to much back pressure and oil is blowing out and constantly out of time so im guessing thiis is where im going to be shortly. Is there anything I should do as well that you didn't do while you were there? And do you have the part numbers #?

    What year is your 460? I have an 89 f350 460 and I’m pretty sure my timing chain is bad. It’s hard to find any videos for my truck because it’s such a rare model and such a pain in the ass to work on 🙃

    I really want to hear more about this how is the result now after a couple of years? How about an idle sound video? Love the videos on this project not alot of guys mess around with the EFI 460 stuff. Im currently in the middle of the cam swap on mine. Ive also done a MAF conversion and am having a tweecer tune done on it. Also wanna say thanks for the videos they have been helpful

      thanks man! Kevin drives the thing all the time, it does towing duty often and he has had no issues after the cam install. it even passed Komifornia smog test! Kev is putting together parts for a big swap to start hopefully this year....lots of other priorities going on right now though. thanks for watching!

    Did you use a straight up timing set?

    • @kevinsinclair1013
      @kevinsinclair1013 5 лет назад

      EFI trucks came with the straight up timing set. The older carbureted smog trucks had the retarded timing sets in them.

    Planning to do a timing chain replacement on my 1977 F350 powered by the 460. Did you have any issues with clearance between that new double roller chain and the oil slinger? I'm still on the fence about whether to go with the directory replacement or a double roller.

    Hello
    I have a 93 F250 with the 460 I have a coolant leak that looks to be coming from behind the timing cover. Where does the erosion of the cover happen at and can it be welded ?

    Hello, nice video. I think it was 2003 and I didn't use the internet or RUclips for help. My question is, I did a timing chain kit replacement on a 1986 Ford Bronco. I didn't know anything about marks that needed to be aligned. I just unbolted and took off and did the reverse to put back together. My Bronco started right up and ran fine for about 9 months until I traded it in for a new Ford F-150. Do you really need to align the marks? I did this with my Chevy Aveo, marks were aligned, but I destroyed my engine when it came time to start. What gives?

    • @vintagespeed
      @vintagespeed  5 лет назад +1

      ouch, sorry that Chevy grenaded on you. the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets are to locate the cam relative to the crank at TDC (top dead center #1 cyl), if the marks are not aligned per manufacturer specs (ford/chevy/import all vary) the cam will be opening the valves at the wrong time and in an interference engine (where the valves open further than the top of the cylinder) the valves will hit the top of the piston and bend the valves, hole the piston and potentially bend the connecting rod. timing of the cam relative to the crank is VERY IMPORTANT. thanks for watching.
