Love this channel! We need a Carly+baby and Hank update. Understand if that is too intrusive :)
Hammering brand new bearings on is not a good idea. You can dimple the race and have a rough bearing. They needed to be slightly tight on housing and on the shaft but it looks as if you got away with it all. btw the "2RS" on the bearing number just means 2 Rubber Seal i.e. a rubber seal either side of a pre greased bearing. Have fun!
The piston that makes the brake - turning it around so that the cupped end is the braking face will probably wear down quickly. It has already shortened which is why the thread was bottoming out. You might have made a replacement from MDPE, or from a retired plastic chopping board from your galley.
We always enjoy your DYI and the music that runs in the background.
What a brilliant design and workmanship to rebuilt. Thanks
Felt the pain, had exactly the same issue on my Moody. Perseverance , patience and lateral thinking wins the day . New swear words were heard though!
Read your reply to a comment in the last video. Really do hope everything is going well with Carly and the baby. Love to you all.
Snap and we've got the power is perfect yard music!
It's good that you know how your male and female parts go together, very important 😂
Great vid!
And they slide in better with lubrication.
Great video, reminds me of replacing all the bearings on mine a couple of years ago. I had the same problem, spent ages dismantling it all whilst limiting the collateral damage!, two days just to get the wheel off. Everything was completely seized on. At least I have now got a comprehensive set of pullers etc 😅. Finding the replacement bearings and putting back together was pretty easy!! Nice to see I’m not the only one
That pedestal seems to move too much as well . Beware leaks at the deck causing rot
I'm a crap mechanic but I love taking stuff like that apart and putting it back together. I overhauled some ancient winches last spring that hadn't been serviced in god knows how long and it was quite a bit of fun.
Top job Dom !!!
Well done.😀⛵️👍
Great video 👍
Great to maintenance your boat for the upcoming season 💪🏽
Well done, great job!
That was a job beautifully done Dom. And to think you started out saying you weren’t very mechanically minded or a fixer of things. Now your teaching us all new tricks 💪
Great work Dom
Netflix, The Gentleman, E5. The Belgian smuggler dude. Totes you! Hansome chap. Great vid btw
Thats a cool steering, In US I've mostly seen the Edson pedistal. (also cool). going to cable system.
Nice job well done
Great job Dom, good for another few years. Andy UK
Hi , great work , your now paying back all your fun hours of sailing , lets hope there not chinses bearings , other wise repeat next year .? We had the Fencers in yesterday to overhaul the boundary , as ravages of time has taken there toll , to the beat of a Kango hammer , not real music but they were happy . Regards to the two or three of your absent co stars . Nice to have such a great workshop .Catch you on the next one .😉👍
The Gentleman on Netflix! I just watched this series and when the character in charge of the Belgium port was introduced I thought it was you!
Ha ha, he’s my doppelgänger 😂
I Wish I could do things properly like that, after watching this I have realised i am an impatient mechanical butcher! Nice job
If, after a few weeks, that brake doesn’t work anymore, I guess it’s the grease, spread all over the steering axis. a LITTLE drop of grease on the sides would have done the trick also!
If no hydraulic press available, use the freezer and some heat on the bearings. They will slide on easier!
But, for those how have the same system, you showed every step, that is a good thing.
I’m so happy that my winterization is a little more silent 😂.
sorry I have not been watching lately but with videos as good as that interesting I am back in a big way thank you for showing how to put it together again before mobile phones things were quite different
Great job 👍 Our potential new boat is out for survey next week and this is a reminder of something else to look for.
Do you have to pay those boys in your backing choir ? Is it possible to book them for a gig, it’s a bit quiet round here
Great video again Dom. Lot of "Grease". Hated that film.
If you need to assemble bearings onto a shaft like that again if you have access to deep freeze, freeze the shaft in that for a few hours (the longer the better) the shaft will shrink slightly and the bearings should just slide on. I would source a tin of Duralac for dissimilar corrosion I think a tin of the stuff (250ml) is around £12. We used to call it Yak 💩in the RAF.
I agree with Geoffrey, need a Carly baby and Hank update Please.
I would put a lot more grease in the "gear box" as some will ooze down the casing
Great video and I have same job todo ... I always wonder if you should use white greece
as what was previously used
🤣🤣 🤣 that everything you do ! It never goes right 😁
Good craftsmanship. I guess the steering system is made by Whitlock?
Do, your Tress pass top, take the 2 little leather patches off it, the colour will run on those.......ask me how I know lol
Ah nvm, I see they've already run on yours :/
Hi, just a question ? Was Hank bread in Carlisle by Murry Armstron ? He looks so much like our Visla, who was a ( Bitco ) pedigree name. Love your content.
I’m surprised that you haven’t serviced the steering previously bearing in mind that you knew it hadn’t been taken apart for forty years. Good job done though.
If it ain't fixed, don't break it!
Bearing usability rating , ZERO 🤣🍻 Nice repair 😃
How come you didn’t grease all the new bearings etc that you put back on the steering shaft you cleaned up too?
if it ain't broke - don't fix it
Need a tube a Duralac , for putting stainless steel bolts into aluminium housing. Local riggers and chandlers will have it in stock.
James
Duralac is good stuff, but don’t get it on your jeans. Don’t ask how I know! :-)
@@PitStopCrew true
Tefgel is less messy but also good
The background noises take a bit of getting used to!
I feel fully greased. I may be dissimilar, but it's ok...greased.
I didn’t see you grease the ball bearings. I hope I just missed it.
how is Carly doing?
You should find a youtube video on how to disassemble a steering pedestal. LOL
Great idea if you know the mfr., this clearly wxasn't an Edison!
Edson, that is.
it's not a boat job if you don't break it at least once, and ideally lose critical tools into the deep bilge twice 😂
Shouldn't those new bearings need to be packed with grease? Just saying.
looks ill you need a copper hammer!!!
Will you lovely people be bringing up your child on the Boat. ?
You need a bigger hammer and more cursing!!!
