    Soooo yes we've done a few episodes on exhausts in the past, BUT today we graduate from buying a full exhaust to buying raw materials so we can make our own! Having a loud exhaust is not only rad but it helps the driver with shifting times. And we are 100% into being the best rally drivers in the world so that means we need to make the e36 the best it can be. As our homegirl J.Lo said "let's get loud people." (Jobe hates this joke but I still kept it ... haha). Go watch the vid!

    Should’ve mentioned that cleaning your parts with brake parts cleaner can be extremely dangerous. If your brake cleaner contains tetrachloroethylene, you can expose yourself to an extremely poisonous gas when welding.
    A lot of the “50 state” brake parts cleaner no longer contains this chemical, they use acetone instead. But always check, and it’s honestly safer to use acetone by itself.

    • @rodanone4895
      @rodanone4895 3 года назад +44

      one hundred and ten percent!!! acetone. and be careful with the acetone. some have oils and grease remnants emulsified when you buy it. apparently there is reagent grade acetone where this ingredient is controlled. but i can't find it. i start with acetone. then scrub again with a dry cloth. the danger them becomes lint... shop vac. then weld.
      tom eager from MIT has an amazing series on RUclips for welding metallurgy, fusion welding etc .. but, the algorithm is unlikely to recommend it. he talks often of welding cleanliness even with low carbon steel.

    • @rodanone4895
      @rodanone4895 3 года назад +7

      @@FleetTech97 phosgene i believe can be created. but chlorine gas by itself also happens and will cause immediate acid products straight on the lung walls.
      mustard gas has sulfer, where the yellow comes from, and sulfer occurs in steel so it is probably also a byproduct.
      keep chlorine away for so so many reasons.

    As a welder fabricator, I'd love to see a follow up on how the exhaust holds up over time, instead of back purging too you can use solar flux next time for when you don't want to use the extra argon, the welds become more brittle when you don't back purge too it's not just about the aesthetic and its tendency for rusting quicker, it's worth doing at least a backing plate or something, love what you guys are doing! Killing it for how fresh you guys are, keep at it :)

    Am in the middle of making my own custom dual exhaust on my Audi B5. Seeing this video goes to show how badly I need an angle finder, lol. I had to cut the straight pipe that a previous owner had slapped on, and replaced both cats with a pair of amazon units, got 2 sections of straight pipe, a portaband, and I've had a flux core welder for 2 years almost. It's coming along pretty well, I think. I didn't believe that butt welding would be as tricky as it is, but I've made do. The .035" wire seems to fill the oddball gaps, and it's all very solid. I'd like to do a TIG welded exhaust with all the back purging, but I don't have that kind of money right now. I'm making this exhaust for roughly $225. It's been a pleasant experience, and I find I enjoy doing all the prep work that goes into it. It's all been quite therapeutic and peaceful, minus dropping bits of dirt and road grime in my eyes while under the car, lol. Thanks again for the informative watch, your bimmer sounds sweet asf

    It's counterintuitive but a steeper angle on your electrode's tip will give you a wider arc. An electrode ground flat will create an almost laser like arc.

      Very underrated comment. To a newer welder, they may not notice. But if you do the different grinds back to back, you can really see the difference. It’s why you want a large angle (60* point) for thin metal, vs a shallow angle (15* point) for thicker metals. The large angle allows you to have a more focused arc, where the heat affected zone isn’t trying to melt a larger area of the metal.

    First off, if that was your first time welding…amazing job! Second, check out stainless autogenous pulse tig, it has totally changed how I weld stainless exhaust. I understand this is a beater but it was my understanding that you shouldn’t stiff weld the exhaust to the chassis as the vibrations will cause some points of it to crack (hopefully not near the headers. The hanger needs bushings. Also, what a lovely head of hair.

  • @JFabrication
    @JFabrication 3 года назад

    If you want to get better looking welds without back purging, which is not entirely required for a muffler delete, just back off the heat or pulse the pedal to control heat input and also lay the torch down almost flat to the pipe like 15° -30° range instead of the 60° that gives full penetration. This way u dont have so much effect on the inside of the tube where the weld is unshielded. This will keep contamination from spoiling both sides of the weld. Critics would be quick to dismiss this technique because there wont be full strength as fully a penetrated perfectly filled pack purged joint. I cant say to apply this to a turbo manifold, its probably not going to work out since those love to crack even when seasoned welders fab them up proper! Cheers to learning something new, enjoyed the video guys!

      Also why have it on foot pedal why not just have an auto push button start on the torch? You're reducing variables which makes the job cleaner again.

  • @bjiggles8145
    @bjiggles8145 Год назад

    Great stuff as always and excellent use of a welding marker. To the new welders out there take it from someone that had to learn the hard way, get some welding markers and always use them, they're worth every penny. Using Zach's 4° cut as an example, with that small of a change if you just "eyeball" it and don't weld the pieces back together at exactly 180° of rotation or if you're making a direct cut onto the item for the angle and instead of a coupler that you can position however you need to, you might find that the other end of your item is now an inch or two to the left or right of where it was supposed to be because of the slight deviation. At that point it's already too late and you'll end up either starting over or going down a rabbit hole trying to make it work. The "measure twice and cut once" philosophy is the same in welding, measure twice and weld once, you'll be glad you did.

So sealing one end with argon supply to then making a very small leak on the otherside will did the pipe, stop crystals. And maybe save your turbo if your fabbing the induction.... Behind the downpipe it's not as critical, but it's good practice

      Do you not remember why B2B had to change? James literally was working himself to death. He was doing Up too speed, B2B, hi-lo, a podcast, and whatever else people like you and me wouldn't know about behind the scenes.
      We almost lost are boy. And here you are demanding him to take on another weekly show ontop of all the hard work he already doses? Think about his personal life???
      Are you even a real fan? Are you in the donut underground???? I highly doubt it. You sit there looking for more free content while contributing nothing at the cost of our boys heath.

      @@matthewbick Doesn't have to be James - would just be nice to see deep dives into a single car again

      @@daniellubovich9262 I totally agree with your point. But that's not what he's asking.

    I welded up a couple full-length 3" pipes, one for our CHUMP car and one for my E36 ti track car. There is really nothing like the sound of an uncorked BMW i6. I'll never forget the first time I ran it up. WOW I had no idea it could sound that cool. BUT it also made a HUGE difference over the stock exhaust of the M52b28 with S52 cams. Thanks for this one, it was fun to relive it a bit.
