  • Yesterday, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs announced it was banning the sale of 19 different motor oils in the state of New Jersey due to viscosity levels that do not match their bottles.
“These products therefore bare misleading labels that provide consumers with no way to know whether they are appropriate for specific vehicles,” Steve Lee, the acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs announced.
Lee said this decision is a matter of helping New Jerseyans keep money in their pockets.
“A lot of consumers are trying to save money and may not have a lot of money to begin with and are trying to still take care of their cars and are essentially being ripped off,” Lee added.

LOL. Who uses these motor oils? They are found in the 99 Cent type stores. Oil change centers will charge you for synthetic but put in cheap motor oil like this to profit the difference. The safest way to make sure you get the motor oil you want? Do it yourself!

Not recommended on engines made aftr 1930 🤣 Well at least they label it properly!! If you don't read the bottle you shouldn't be buying oil 😂

The api star burst needs to match what your owners manual says. Journalism at its worse, they know nothing.Since unleaded gas and converters zinc has been banned .It was there for wear like lead in gas for valves.Oil has different packages for fuel used and type of engine you have.Newer engines need very thin oil to operate correctly and the old ones needed heavyer oils.

People should read the labels properly and the fine prints, its the errors of the people who don't properly read the lables, the fine prints on the motor oil bottle, also should properly read the motor oil requirements found in the vehicle owner's manual, specified by the vehicle manufacturer(s).
Its not the error of the retailer and or the oil manufacturer, this is happening due to people with lack of common sense knowledge.
People rarely blame themselves and mostly blame others for their own errors.

Jon Smith, I wouldn’t even use these oils as a flush oil!! Who knows how much of the remains and sediments would lead to internal damage? Just spend a few bucks more and buy a quality motor oil. Oil is cheap…engines are not!

  • @njsongwriter

That oil is okay for your lawnmower or your chain saw. No law has been broken. It is the vehicle owner's responsibility to learn and know what the vehicle manufacturer's requirements are for the fluids in their cars whether it's gasoline, brake fluid, motor oil or transmission fluid. No wonder they make cars without transmission fluid dip-sticks now. The vehicle owner can't be trusted. Ugh. What a shame. Most people don't even know the difference between the definition of "UP" and "air flow" if they ever replace the cabin air filter in their car.

The oil is not the problem. The problem is over regulation. That oil is fine for older cars because those engines have to use thicker oil. New cars use lighter viscosity oil even 0w20. This is mostly for fuel economy. They have to come up with a scientific study that those cheaper oils will destroy the engine. They won't.

Go to pqiamerica.com and you will see that these are not just plain non detergent oil, but actually what seems to be used motor oil with alot of dirt and metal particles. There are also some that seem to be from old parts washer fluid because of the super low viscosity and high silica. Even some used transformer oil with the unusually low viscosity and high aluminum and copper contamination. This oil really is a problem. I have no issue with basic api sa oils that show little or no additives and have the proper viscosity. Silica and metal contaminants or improper viscosity for the weight that the label claims is a big problem.

These oils are better than no oil , hey my f250 pick up burned so much oil I was on a road trip with it and I drove three hours I stopped at a travel center and I checked my oil I was empty I was running on condensation to make lubrication and I’ll tell you what those 1$ oil quarts saved my trucks life so it’s a win in my book there good for emergency oil

Engine and motors are generic terms. They can literally mean engines for lawnmowers, air compressors and generators.
These oils were labeled correctly. It's people not paying attention.

    • @humansvd3269
      @humansvd3269 6 лет назад

People need to read. The oil labels perfectly state what it's used for the remaining states, even California, doesn't have this problem. It's common practice for cheap stores to have older viscosity oils like SAE 30 and 5-30 because there are other uses such as air compressors and generators and lawnmowers.
They even have a separate rating separate from the modem gasoline automotive oils.
The stores and oils did nothing wrong. NJ is and always will be a garbage state.

One of the oils banned by New Jersey is "U.S. Economy Motor Oil." This is what the back label says (from PQIA's website, where they have a photo):
US Economy is a lubricating oil, its designed for older model automobiles. 5-30 means the viscosity range from 5 to 30, it does not meet newer car manufacture's warranty requirements. Only use to top off. Always consult your own'er manual for proper service requirement.
This is not a 5W-30 oil.
And you guys are against what NJ did? These oils were total crap!

Here's what the Petroleum Quality Institute of America says about US Spirit motor oil:
      www.pqiamerica.com/January2012A/January2012R2/usspirit.htm
Needless to say, it's not good. The viscosity at the high temperature rating is too low, and the viscosity at the low temperature rating is way too high...which to me appears like they're selling the cheapest straight-30-weight oil they could get their greedy mitts on. Having said that, if you have an old beater of a truck from the 1970s or early 1980s, you could use this oil with no real problems.
The picture they show of the bottle should be enough to get the people who make this crap thrown in prison. It's an SF/CC-rated oil, which shouldn't be used in anything made after 1988. On the front of the bottle, it says "Made with SL Additive Technology." The API service rating isn't on the front, just this "SL Additive Technology." People who aren't seriously into cars will see this oil, think "My car needs SL oil and this says SL on it, so I'll get this." And they fuck up their camshafts in the process.
