Check out the Video Description to find links to the Oil and Filter and Tools I use in this video. Always remember, to start your bike and let it run for at least 5 minutes before you change the oil. Warm oil drains better, pulls out sediment better, and with "Dry Sump" engines like in our Harley Davidson motorcycles, the oil tends to "sump" down into the engine case over time which will prevent you from draining all the oil from the bike unless you start the bike to pump the oil up into the oil tank before you drain it.
@J W Casebeer Ty for the video! Easy to understand and as a first timer helped understand easily. One question: Some videos show putting a bit of engine oil in the oil filter before screwing in. You didn't do that. Is it more of preference or ??
I am a first time rider, just bought my first used 2000 Harley soft tail, For people like me, This video was very educational, Thank you for making a very easy video to follow and understand. 👍👍👍
I'm in the same situation, just got a '14 breakout that's been sitting a few years and was wondering how to go about draining the oil tank, this took me through everything thoroughly with fluid recommendations, which is nice, especially for someone who isn't knowledgeable about harleys
I'm with Robert axton on this one, I just picked up a 2011 a year ago and this taught me a lot. It's kind of crazy when you fear no automobile engine but when you come up to something you really don't know
Just bought a 2000 Deuce w/ 12k miles! This video is the best. No excessive talking, no opinionated advice. Straight forward and to the point. Couldn't thank you enough. Thanks brother🤘
I was quoted $200 to do this - If I supplied all the materials. Took me less than two hours from start to finish to do all three oil changes. Thank you!
I've worked on many types of machines including Aircraft. You just explained and demonstrated how to perform maintenance like a true professional. I hope you are an instructor somewhere, if not, someone needs to hire you. And thank you for saving me some $$$$
Love the Softail Deluxe. I just got my wife's Deluxe back on the road after her non life threatening accident about 4 years ago. New tires, tubes, wheel bearings, battery, chrome hand controls, brake line etc. I still need to do the 3 hole service on it. Very informative video. Thanks. I can hear your wife or girlfriend now "Honey, where are all the disposable baking trays I bought for Thanksgiving dinner?" 😁
I’ve just bought a 2008 heritage softail classic and this video is quite helpful because the Harley shop wanted to charge me 1100 dollars to change my fluids and now I can do it myself and save money!
I found this video a little too late, I drained my trany fluid, which I thought was my oil. If all the videos I watched, this one was absolutely perfect. Thank you for making this for guys like myself. Not mechanically inclined.
Just used this video to change the fluids on my 2004 Heritage Softail. Couldn’t have done it without this! Thank you so much for such a clear and concise set of instructions!
Thank you! New to Harley Davidson ownership, I just bought a 2003 Softail and I'm getting to know her. Out of all the instruction videos, yours is the best one I found. You have the right level of detail. I liked your comment about using engine oil vs gear oil in the transmission. I liked your tip about cutting the funnel. I liked how you do everything on the exhaust side first then the other side. Nice work on the video! The information is great and just right for me.
Thank You! I bought a '04 Deuce last year, and even though I have been working on my own cars and import bikes for years, I was a bit squeamish about tinkering on this bike. Thanks to your video, I'll be saving a few hundred bucks each season because I can certainly do the job, and I like the fact that each system has its own drain. Again, I cannot thank you enough!
My first Harley is an 04 Deuce and exactly what I was thinking. I have sport bikes but was a little worried about changing the oils on my Deuce also but after this video it was easy to do.
My neighbor asked me to do an oil change for him. This video is perfectly done and very informative. I'm always on RUclips learning and this video is just so well made. I APPRECIATE IT. Great job sir
Thanks Marc, I try to make the kind of videos i would like to find when i need information. I'm always pleased to hear from people who appreciate the format.
I have to wonder how many people came hear after watching the latest two videos from this gentleman as he pointed out a "Fram" filter in this one. I am about to sub if his next video is a good as those two. I am routinely amazed at the ignorance and brand loyalty of "those" people, only to have them proven wrong and see that they retract their statements. Kudos to Jay for showing those less informed the people of Taiwan and a trusted product for years when my fathers father swore by Fram products. My grandfather always said the problem with people these days is nobody has time to do things right, they just have time to do it over....words to live by and a guide to life for me now in my late 50's...do it right once, take pride in your work and don't forget work smart...not hard.
Seriously good vid. I have one suggestion: If you leave the engine oil filler cap in place at first, you'll see a vacuum effect as the oil flow out of the drain rapidly slows. If it *doesn't* rapidly slow, then there's a good chance your rocker box breathers have had it, and they're allowing air to flow into the oil jacket at the rocker box. It can be a good idea to leave the engine oil filler cap in, until you've done this check, and you'll have confirmed that your breathers are okay. It's effectively a check you can do 'for free', without having to disassemble and inspect. Then go ahead and remove the engine oil filler cap to let the oil drain as suggested.
I appreciate the information. Clear and helpful for a 72-year-old guy who is changing fluids for the first time on a Softtail. Now I know I'll get it done right!
Thanks man, another point to remember is oil can have water from condensation in it. You need to run the engine and bring it to its full operating temperature to cook off that moisture in the oil. If an engine is left sitting around for long periods of time this moisture can cause corrosion on internal engine parts like steel sleeves and piston rings. This is another reason to change your oil at required times and maybe even more often in you live in areas where there is higher humidity in the air.
Great video. I felt ok about doing the engine and transmission oil on my 2009 Deluxe, but I was a little concerned about doing the primary oil, but after seeing your video . . . it looked completely doable. Nice job . . . and you do the cleanest oil changes I've EVER seen, period!! Thanks for the great instruction!!
Thank you so much. I have only ever changed the oil on my Yamaha. Never on my Deuce. You made this very clear and concise. Also, not sure why I was so afraid of these processes! Easy peasy. Will be doing this weekend!
Excellent video. Very clear instructions without being too wordy. Contained all the relevant and important information needed to change the fluids for these model years. There are a lot of other people who want to include a lot of history and information not needed.
I have an 02 Harley Heritage with almost 200,000 miles on her. Take care of your bike, and it’ll take care of you !!!! I recently bought a 2005 Harley heritage! Thank you so much for such a wonderful video!!!
Very well made video. You speak slowly, clearly, and work methodically. Only change I would make is add in a reminder to replace all the o rings on the drain plugs.
This was the best, most concise and informative video I've seen on how to properly maintain the fluids in my softail. Thank you for the instructional video
Hey Joseph. Thanks for the kind words. If the bike is not leaking, and the gaskets are not visibly damaged, cracked or brittle, then don't change them. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
No frills and straight to the point. Thanks for a great video. Just bought my first Harley a 2011 heritage and was curious how Harley oil systems worked and how to change my own oil. God bless brother 💪🏻🇺🇸
Excellent video Jay! Best I've seen on 3 hole oil change! Really appreciate your precise details on everything. Also want to compliment you on that beautiful bike. Gorgeous! Ride safe.....
Thank you so much for that video you did it perfectly no fuss no mass and made it easy to do for myself. Thank you so much. I appreciate it and please do more videos on Fix the Harley softail motorcycles.😊
I ride a 2019 TriGlide...I had to trade my 2020 RoadGlide after heart surgery....anyway I missed two wheels so I got a 2014 Heritage Classic..,you have regained my confidence to do this myself... Thanks Jay
Great job Jay; you're very articulate and without a doubt, you provided us with a video instruction on this subject that's perfect for 1st. timers or seasoned DIY'ers. Thank you - Dunmovin' 2
Thanks, this cleared up everything, as far as what viscosity oils, how it's done and where to put it. I got rid of my 1952 Panhead to buy my Heritage and there's clearly a huge difference. Very clear instructions, again, thanks.
Just getting ready to change the fluids on my wife's 2015 Heritage Soft Tail Classic and this video was very helpful. You have a great way of explaining what to do without adding any unnecessary information which usually frustrates me when watching other videos. Thanks!!!
This was great, thank you for making this! I’ve been going the oil changes on my cars and dirt bikes since I was a kid, but new the HD world. Now I feel good about being able to maintain the new ride. Well done, helped me quite a bit.
Thank you for the video. I usually take my ride in for oil changes due to lack of time. After watching your video that no longer will happen. Keep em coming.
Many years ago when in the Corps I rode a Honda interceptor because as a young man faster was better. My Pops was a Harley man through and through. A couple years ago I got a chance to grab an 03 Heritage Softail Classic. Beautiful bike in perfect condition. I fell in love right away. Got relocated to Oklahoma in middle of nowhere for work. Wanted to ride here and at home when I was there. Got me a 2012 Heritage out here and love it as well. I wanted to do my own maintenance and wasn't sure what was best approach. After watching your videos I now know the best approach . Really appreciate your videos man. Keep it up. I did my first maintenance off of your video and it was as easy as pie. Good job man !
Graduated to my first HD last year, a 2000 FXSTS. It's due for the spring tune up to ready it for the season. Really appreciate how informative this video is and the extra time you took to show all the necessary steps. I'm into wrenching on stuff myself and the quick tutorial makes this looks easy. Great job and looking forward to checking out other videos. Rock On.
Very informative! I'm about to do my first oil change on a softail, so this is definitely gonna be my guide. I'm a new rider and will frequent your channel. Thank you!

I tried to do an oil change right now. Whats the origional motor oil when you buy it from the dealer? Regular or synthetic?
Unless you ask for synthetic, they will normally sell you regular conventional oil.
J W Casebeer i think i had regular oil and i put 20/50 after it drained. 🤦🏻♂️ i didnt even change the oil filter.
@J W Casebeer Ty for the video! Easy to understand and as a first timer helped understand easily. One question: Some videos show putting a bit of engine oil in the oil filter before screwing in. You didn't do that. Is it more of preference or ??
Great basic to the point video, good job JW !!
im impressed. you are very through, no bull, no bragging or talking about yourself for 10 minutes. right to the point. thank you. i will return
someone should hire you to do instructional videos. seriously, your voice and ability to narrate is amazing.
This dude is thorough, not too fast and not too slow. Not to mention, hes chill AF.
I'll be doing my own fluids now thanks to him. Subbed!
Great video! No extra BS that I am not interested in - straight to the point and task at hand! Thank you.
I am a first time rider, just bought my first used 2000 Harley soft tail, For people like me, This video was very educational, Thank you for making a very easy video to follow and understand. 👍👍👍

This is best documentary I’ve seen on my fluids change on my harley five stars too this video

Thank you for the kind words.
In the coming year i will make a video about removing the front wheel.
Thank you for the suggestion.
I'm with Robert axton on this one, I just picked up a 2011 a year ago and this taught me a lot. It's kind of crazy when you fear no automobile engine but when you come up to something you really don't know
This was perfectly executed in every way. Well done.
Clearest, most articulate RUclips video instruction on this subject. Great job!
I know right
Just bought a 2000 Deuce w/ 12k miles! This video is the best. No excessive talking, no opinionated advice. Straight forward and to the point. Couldn't thank you enough. Thanks brother🤘
Well I just changed all three oils in my Harley custom deluxe 2016 I’m also 65 year old lady retired was a excellent video

Awesome video, very thorough. Thanks for this 👌

Well done Jay. You made that look easy. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I’m a teacher and coach and your instruction is about as good as it gets. Thank you for making me confident to change my fluids.
I picked the right video to get tips on changing all three fluids on my '04 Fat Boy.
Clear, concise presentation.
I appreciate that positive feedback!
I’ve just bought a 2008 heritage softail classic and this video is quite helpful because the Harley shop wanted to charge me 1100 dollars to change my fluids and now I can do it myself and save money!
This was absolutely the cleanest oil change I’ve seen…kudos. I was only checking because I forgot my capacity but ended watching the whole vid
I found this video a little too late, I drained my trany fluid, which I thought was my oil.
If all the videos I watched, this one was absolutely perfect. Thank you for making this for guys like myself. Not mechanically inclined.
A+. Clarity of how to get it done is perfect. Thanks.

Thank you for this video, you saved me over $650. HD quoted me $750 for the fluids.
For a 3 hole oil change cost 750.00.
That's way too high.
I'm in SC and can get it done for 300
This is the best documentary for changing all oils thank yo! Your awesome!
Thank You! I bought a '04 Deuce last year, and even though I have been working on my own cars and import bikes for years, I was a bit squeamish about tinkering on this bike. If only all tutorials were like this - clear and concise. Feel confident to tackle my Fat Boy oil change now. Thanks
Hey, i appreciate the kind words!
Good luck with your Fatboy service.
Let me know how it goes.
Appreciate showing where drain plugs are.

Hey man. Super great info. Simple no nonsense old school style oil change. Thank you.
Thanks man! Time to get the sled out of storage! Your video was a nice reminder for an old guy who has a hard time remembering yesterday's dinner. :)
Hey Edwin,
Thanks for the comment!
Safe riding out there brother.
Now that is one of the cleanest bikes I have seen. You must detail it after every ride. Good video on the basics.
I can honestly say that i spent a great deal of time polishing that bike! : )
Beautiful bike. Absolutely love the green color. Great video. Thanks
That was very professionally done I really like your video.

The best video I watched but was surprised you did mention changing the gaskets !

Excellent tutorial. Thank you JW. For further confirmation just continue reading the comments. Live to ride.
Squeeky clean, very nice work. A pro-bro indeed. Looking forward to see other areas of interest like how to change an Engine Temp sensor or an ECM.
Just getting ready to change the fluids on my wife's 2015 Heritage Soft Tail Classic and this video was very helpful. You have a great way of explaining what to do without adding any unnecessary information which usually frustrates me when watching other videos. Thanks!!!
I really appreciate that feedback.
