Thanks a lot Doc. Am also a foreign medical student who will be taking the exams soon Insha-Allah and this video is just what I needed, thanks really appreciate this
Summary- do Kaplan videos- for understanding the concepts in detail first aid- for high yield in the test - most questions are asked from this informative book
thank you soooo much dr.raaga,i am in the 2 nd year,i am preparing in the way that even those jokes said are written in mynotes. with your advice i came to know that i am in the right path.once again thank you so much
Hello Raga, this video is really informative and thank you for sharing. it would be really great if u can make a video regarding NBMEs , U-world self assesments and subscription period necessary for step1. Thank you
Hi Sandeep! Thank you for your comment. Yes that's a great suggestion and ill make sure I make a separate video dedicated for the NBMEs and self assessments!
Thank you sooooo much Dr Raga. it was really informative, can you please make a video regarding the subscription for the step one and your test experience.
I tried kaplan but lecturio worked better for me. I don't know why, maybe because everything was more organized there and for me, organized space plays a massive role in my productiveness. I also found Kaplan too pricy. In lecturio they provided me with everything I needed in a single subscription, which was a surprise in a good way.
I was doing general surgery post graduation in india and then I got a residency in USA left my post graduation in india half way and chose gastroenterology, and that was the best decision I have made in my life.I feel you should just leave Middle East pass USMLE and dont waste time over there since you have to start from scratch when you come to USA.I have a successful GI practice in Florida and love my job.Surgery is a total headache ,life style is horrible night calls etc ,the time it takes to establish practice and it’s 5 years and neurosurgery is 7 years.Well anyways good luck .
Thank you for the great tips, Dr. Raga :) They'll definitely prove useful. Just subscribed to your channel as well. On a side note and totally unrelated to Medicine, you have a unique and beautiful name. Not sure if you've heard it already but from the nose down, you bear a resemblance to the classical 'raga' queen Anoushka Shankar :) Wish you all the best with your endeavours. Will keep an eye out for new videos on your channel, thank you again.
Hello Doctor, I also have the same name as you do and I am really inspired by your video !! do you think you can maybe share your video notes of step 1 :) since it would be reallyyyyy helpful , i am asking because i am really having difficulty in taking organised notes from the videos , or would that be difficult to do? appreciate your kind reply
I am 28 yrs old...next I will finished my master degree....By the way I am Chinese student....Am I too old to USMLE ....I really want to go US and be a doctor~
Hey doc Raga! This video was really helpful. I am an Indian medical student in my 2nd year of medical school. I'm planning to take the step 1 exam in 2018. Is it a good idea to take them now or after I graduate? Also can you make a video about how you studied pathology and pharmac when you were in med school ?
Hello! When you take the steps completely depends on how you can balance your medical school exams with your USMLE preparation. Many foreign medical students find it difficult to concentrate on their Medical school studies AND usmle prep and for that reason many decide to take the steps after graduating. However, if you strongly feel that you can tackle both at the same time, go for it! :) And that's a very good suggestion! I will work on a video about that. I do have some tips with regards to studying those subjects!
Dr.RAGA im sorry bt worth mentioning it ..in d middle of d video i was just carried away by ur beauty...u r a vry pretty doctor......bt all d informations u conveyed r really usefull watching dis video fr d second time
Thankyou for such detailed information.was really helpful I plan on using only 4 months to study like how u mentioned in the video Can u tell me what your sample time table looked like to cover the basic sciences in four months ? Did u start u world from the start or later? I am not working so I'd like to make maximum use of the four months. Thanks!
Hello Sara. Well it is important to create a schedule that fits your schedule. However, if you would like I can make a video to talk about a sample schedule (which I used during my prep) while I was simultaneously working, that you can also try for yourself. And yes, I started using Uworld from the very beginning! That is very important as I have highlighted in my video.
Hello Dr Raga! I'm so glad I saw your videos and came across your channel. Your videos are very helpful, clear and to the point. Could you please share your step 1 study schedule with details like how many kaplan videos did you cover in 1 day and notes? How many revisions, etc. I have started studying for step 1 but it is taking me too long to watch kaplan vids and make notes. Also, could you tell us how did you choose your specialty. And how can we overcome odds if we want a competitive surgical subspeciality as IMGs? Hope you matched to your dream specialty and program! Thank you!!
This is a really old video, but the content is still so helpful, I appreciate it so much, I finally know how to start studying. Also, did you use sketchy micro or sketchy pharma at all? I want to know how helpful they are, I know they help in memorising a lot of information, but is it helpful test wise?
@@Swirlss321 hi! That would be great, but just so you know, this is by no means my dedicated period, and I'll have to go to the hospital so I won't be studying intense hours everyday? If that's alright with you, then absolutely I would like to :)
Hello Dr.Raga such helpful vedios u r making. Thats really very inspiring. Thanks a lot. So, did u go through Kaplan lecture notes? or only the vedios, first aid n UW? & when I should subscribe for the UW? in the middle of my preparation or from the very beginning?
When I watch youtube video referring to USMLE, I wonder how intelligent people with a higher score of USMLE are. I have a dream that one day I would like to reach the level of them.
Hi Doctor Raga I'm from India and wanted to know that should I do the MBBS graduation from India or should I indulge in the med school there in the Us or Canada
I am super confused on what to do. I took step 2, maybe earlier than I should have and didn't get through. I had taken a short course in US but the advisor was horrible. I am wondering if I should start back to Step 1 and just focus going in order. Also so that it can help me get to do rotations in US hopefully. Is it worth doing Kaplan notes and questions bank or solely UWorld? and then doing NBME also? Thanks in advance if you respond. I get sad as all my work in med school, even doing rotation outside, it's just draining. Seeing you really motivates me. Your very kind that is going to take you far too :).
Hello! Sorry to hear about your bad experience! But don't give up! By adjusting a few things I'm sure you can perform well the next time! Now that you have the option to choose, I would say its a good idea to start with the Step 1 as they go into all the basic details there that will also help you when you start preparing for the CK! And as you said, clearing your step 1 as soon as possible will also benefit you with getting rotations in US hospitals! Uworld alone is definitely not sufficient! It is very important to solidify your base with the kaplan videos/notes and FA and all the while using Uworld Q bank as a complementary study tool throughout the entire length of your preparation!
Doctor Raga Thank you So much. I really appreciate you taking time to reply back. Thank you and I will do that for sure this time around. Thanks once again. :)
Hi Dr. Raga, thank you so much for your awsome video!! I was wondering, how did you study uworld? Did you write down all of the info (or only read the information) in the explanations or focused solely on the information you needed to get the answer right? Because I find this particularly difficult. Thanks :)
Hello. Well, it is not really possible to write down all the information from uworld explanations as that would be very time consuming. Moreover, that would be very difficult to do when you have to go through so many questions per day! What i did was that i only wrote down the information that was new to me or that I didn't know. Basically I was only building on the information that i already had. The rest of the information i only read.
That's really informative,Dr. Raga. How important is it to use pathoma or goljan for the step 1 exam??..did u watch pathoma videos or goljan audios or did u stick with Kaplan pathology ??
That's a great question! Infact, i forgot to mention in this video that for pathology, I had watched the Pathoma videos instead of the Kaplan pathology videos! Thank you for pointing it out, ill make sure I mention this missed point in the description box and in my next video! :)
+Doctor Raga And regarding the subscription to Uworld, how many weeks/months out do you think one should subscribe to it?? I plan to schedule my step1 exam in the last week of December.
Dear Raga....Basically, I need to start my long trip with USLME .I am not aware of all unfamiliar steps.. it sounds really strange, but I need you indespensible support at this stage. Kindest regards,Aba
Nameste! What about the books like , Greys (Anatomy) and Guyton and Hall for physio and other books for other subjects.Should we focus only on Kaplan books or do Kaplan with these heavy books.. Thanks for the help😊
Hi doctor Raga, Thank you for your videos. I saw your all videos regarding USMLE step 1 and videos are so inspirational and so positive!!! Your Kaplan notes are really good. Is there any way that i can get your notes of step 1 kaplan video notes?
The video was really helpful for a beginner... Ok , so the query u have is that I am doing my undergraduate from india , so when is the correct time to appear for usmle step 1 ? And if you could please tell how should we prepare our time table?
Great video, appreciate the effort. Just one question, didn't you use kaplan lecture notes at all? I am a IMG and planning on giving Step 1 in 4-5 months. Would you recommend kaplan lecture notes or just videos along with FA and pathoma? Regards.
Hello! I only watched the Kaplan videos and did not read the lecture notes purely because i am a very slow reader and i knew that doing both would cost me a lot of time! So it just depends on what kind of a learner you are! If you feel you retain information better by reading, go ahead with the lecture notes! On the other hand, if you prefer visual studying like i do, go for the videos (or both). But i would say that in addition to this, FA and pathoma are very important.
Thank you so much for nice details about Usmle 1.I just wanna ask which video lectures you watched. Are these of" classroom anywhere" or the video lectures of 2010.kindly reply. Thanks
Hi Raga. All that information was really helpful . I just needed to know if u cud mention about ur immunology preparation strategy . Did u use Kaplan for it or FA is enough ? Bcx its hard to conceptualize esp immunology from only FA .
Yes immunology can be quite tricky to prepare for as a lot of the information is pure memorization! I watched the Kaplan videos for immunology which i found very helpful because the professors always simplified the matter and spoke about easy ways to remember a lot of the information! And once i was done with the videos i also did a quick read of immunology in FA.
Hi. Thank you so much for your detailed video. What is the best way to read the explanations of the USMLEWorld questions? Is it best to read the explanations of all the answer choices in each question (a,b,c,d,e) or just the explanation for the correct option (for example, c) and the explanation for the one you picked which was incorrect? Some people say just read the explanation for the correct option for each question because reading explanations for all the answer choices for each question is not necessary because those other incorrect answer choices will be used to pose a question down the line in the question bank and so you will get to read them then. Please let me know what you suggest. Thanks.
Hello Linda! Well, I look at it quite differently. I feel the most effective way of studying is to read the explanations of ALL the options of the question! The reason I am saying that is, when you read the explanations of the other options as well, you keep building up your information for the topic in question as well as other topics that are very similar to the topic or disease in the question! Also, i noticed during my prep that i sometimes got key points about certain diseases in the "wrong option" explanation that i don't see in the explanation of the question that talks about that topic itself! I think that hoping to come across the topic from the wrong options is a risk and you don't know if it will come up for sure! Hope this helps! :) Good luck!
Doctor Raga : Thank you! That makes sense, it's just more time consuming doing it that way, like 3 hours each per block plus the additional hour to do the questions 😰...Lol.
Hello mam . I have just qualified for my under graduates and will you please help me with the study schedule and same for the which steps i should prefer first. btw this video also helped lot about how can i make my notes.
hello, this was a very informative video for me. I just finished my foundation year and I will be in medicine year one this year. I was planning to prepare for USMLE from the start and I will be writing the exam in M2 or M3, which will be in 2021-22. I found the first aid for usmle book 2018th edition way cheaper than 2019. which edition would you recommend me to buy? is it necessary to get the latest edition? are there much differences. thank you very much, respond will be much appreciated!
Hello and thank you for this nice info , I hope I can pass the usmle exam like you , lov u 💚, please can you tell me where can I find the Kaplan videos that you used them 😢
Hello! You're welcome! Unfortunately I got the videos from a friend so I am not sure of where it can be purchased from! But since this is a question so frequently asked to me, i'll do my research on it and let all of you know soon! And don't worry, do your best and i'm sure you'll do well in the steps! :)
Hello Dr Raga. I'm a 5th year medical student, and I'm pretty much interested in the USMLE but I've got a lot of questions to ask you. 😁 Is there another way that I can keep in touch with you?
Hello please I want to know is it important to go through first aid first pass before starting uworld or NMBE online,or both first aid and uworld should be done simultaneously
Hello Dr Raga. Thank you for the video. Just wanted to ask: what all residencies can an FMG hope to procure? I mean, what all are available? And if it is possible for FMGs to secure surgery or orthopedics?
It is definitely possible for an IMG to get into a General Surgery or Orthopedics residency. However, surgical based specialities are way more competitive and therefore more difficult for IMGs to get into.
What I've already done was annotate my First Aid with Kaplan Lecture Notes (and Goljan for Patho) stuff (my First Aid is a mess compared to yours haha). And I plan to take 3 months to study, with only my annotated FA and UWORLD (plus NBMEs). Do you think this is okay? Or do you still advise to go through the videos?
I would say that the Kaplan videos are great to get a more solid foundation in the subjects for the Step 1. However, if you feel that your timeline and situation does not allow you to watch the videos, then the First Aid and Uworld should be your top most priority with regards to resources to finish completely!
hello dr raga ... a nicely explained video .. i m new to USMLE .. my field of interest is obs gyne .. i m an IMG too .. i wanted to know is it hard to be matched to obs gyne field? and is it neccessary to do any research before hand to be able to get into it ...also how many hours of study is minimally required in a day to be able to get good scores?
Hello! Any surgical specialty (OBGYN included) can be quite competitive to get into! However, OBGYN is a relatively less competitive residency when compared to other surgical specialties like Orthopedic surgery, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, etc. The importance of research varies from specialty to specialty, however, it is always a good idea to have some kind of research background (irrespective of what residency you are applying to). I can make a separate video with regards to ideal study schedules for exams if you like! :)
thank you so much dr raga .... yes of course i d like to watch videos on time management... if u dun mind dr raga ... is there a way i can interact with u ? like may be an email address or somthin to which i cud write to ... what residency program did u match to ??
according to the experience of IMGs and advice regarding obgyn in particular, you should concentrate on having US clinical experience first and foremost. This is way highly valued than research. However, IMGs have a more tough competition so padding your resume with research experience might be beneficial if they have to decide between you and another equally qualified applicant
THANKS FOR COMPREHENSIVE EXPLANATION. i DIDN'T PASS MY FIRST USMLE 1 ,SINCE 7 YEARS THIN I WAS BUSY WITH MY PhD,AND I COMING BACK TO DO IT,BUT I FEEL THAT I HAVE TO DO USMLE 1 BEFORE 2..DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENT,,IM PACTISING URLOGY SINCE >10 YEARS..
After doing my steps, I do feel it is better and more advantageous to take the Step 1 before the step 2 ck! Especially if you have graduated a longer time ago! Good luck!
Hello I have a question In your discripcion you I saw you study pathology with pathoma Where can I find this page Can you give me the link please¿ And what about that book of USMLE where can I find it Thank you
I highly recommend to use Lecturio. It's relatively new for medical students and that's why many of us don't use it as a preparation resource. I gave it a try and it is genuinely the best resource I used so far. Definitely try it out. It's worth it's price as you get everything you need in one platform

Buy it from their website. Or you can find pirated versions for free online.

can you please make a video on how you wrote your notes (briefly )
Great idea! I am working on that video!
Doctor Raga thanks

I'm planning to take USMLE step 1 next year , maybe I'll need help or have a question later
You're welcome! And sure, ill be happy to answer your questions then!
Doctor Raga Thankiu for replying .
And also if u cud mention specifically about ur biostat n genetics portion resources that wud b great . :)
And plz do mention ur email id in the beginning or end of ur videos for further correspondence if its OK .
What if the college we study is not registered in IMED, Can we still apply for USMLE?
Good luck!
Doctor Raga : Thank you! That makes sense, it's just more time consuming doing it that way, like 3 hours each per block plus the additional hour to do the questions 😰...Lol.
Thanks Dr. Raga
I really like your video most. Are Kaplan videos, first Aid and U- world sufficient for step 1 ma'am?
Thank you so much
Thank you for all the info! Why did you study first aid 2014 and not the 2015 or 2016?
great post i hope i can do it in 3

Hi Raga..Nice video..very helpful..can you tell me what is pretty decent score in step 1.?
Dr Raga 😊 Did you watch any other videos rather than KAPLAN videos ,,, like DIT Videos for example ?
hello, this was a very informative video for me. I just finished my foundation year and I will be in medicine year one this year. I was planning to prepare for USMLE from the start and I will be writing the exam in M2 or M3, which will be in 2021-22. I found the first aid for usmle book 2018th edition way cheaper than 2019. which edition would you recommend me to buy? is it necessary to get the latest edition? are there much differences. thank you very much, respond will be much appreciated!
thanks mam
In which country did you graduate?? How's med school in that country and what are the differences with U.S. schools?
Can you talk about electives? As you are a foreign graduate.... We r also the same...and very much confused with that...
Great! Thank you
U watched Kaplan videos from RUclips?
Hello Dr Raga. Thank you for the video. Just wanted to ask: what all residencies can an FMG hope to procure? I mean, what all are available? And if it is possible for FMGs to secure surgery or orthopedics?
It is definitely possible for an IMG to get into a General Surgery or Orthopedics residency. However, surgical based specialities are way more competitive and therefore more difficult for IMGs to get into.
Should I buy keplan books too or it is not necessary if I have FA , phatoma ??
Please upload Kaplan videos
Which videos you watched all of 2014??
Good luck!
