Hiya, Wiz! Nice car, good presentation. A couple tidbits for you: The little doodads atop the front fenders were fiber-optics, which shone in different colors, to indicate which bulb were illuminated. The cowl did NOT move to accommodate the wipers. It was fixed, but had plenty of clearance. The steering wheel was not a "custom" steering wheel. There were several options from Buick. Factory installed. This wheel is an up scale wheel from Buick.
It's absolutely beautiful. Back at that time, my Dad was General Manager for a Buick dealership in Conroe, Texas. He knew one of the Buick Reps pretty well, and he was able to order "custom" Demo cars for himself... One that he got was a beautiful, deep reddish -brown convertible Riv, that had a gorgeous dark brown SUEDE interior. I don't know what became of that car when it was his time to return it, but I sure do remember the good times we had cruising around in it!
The 307 engines are nearly indestructible. The fact that this car not only looks pristine but has under 3k miles makes this car worth well over it's MSRP.
I’m neither a GM fan, nor a lover of Brougham-era cars, but for some reason I’ve always really liked these. No idea why. And this one is amazing. Around 1980, one of my paper-route customers bought one of these (or was it a Toronado?) brand new…but with hail damage. The storm had been so bad that the dealers couldn’t get enough hoods and deck lids to repair them all. I think he got something like 40% off the sticker. He didn’t care about all the dimples - didn’t affect how it ran - and he ran it until he died a few years later.
Wow!! What a beautiful car! My grandmother always owned a Riviera in the eighties and nineties until she passed away. She had one just like this only it was a lilac metal flake color. I remember loving to honk that 4 note horn whenever she would let me! Great childhood memories!
My father did car upholstery and headliners back during the late 80s and early 90s. The headliner decay is normal and happens even under ideal conditions. I can remember seeing tons of these back when they were still relatively new on the road. He had no shortage of work. That dash was magic for a kid back then! I wondered often how they worked
My mother had this car when I was a kid. Off white with the fake rag top. I remember when my dad brought it home for her. It was the dealers personal car and my dad asked him to sell it so he could surprise my mom. It was her absolute favorite car. She drove it everywhere and I think it had 300k miles when she finally got rid of it. If I had the money I would buy it for her right now. Thanks for sharing this one.
Really special! I had a '80 in Burgundy, v6T, only had it 4 mos and it was stolen in Houston. If you wanted to give me a screaming deal to make up for that trauma, I won't deny you the good will. LoL. Love this grey leather and color! The v8's felt like you were pulling a trailer for some reason, really slow power plants, but looked so great!
Having had a few of these, typically the interior holds up well other than the headliner. You might get a crack or two in the dash pad and the door pulls the end trim sometimes comes apart. The tilt column can get loose. But that's usually about it unless it's seen an abnormal amount of use or sun/heat. The biggest issue with these era of GM cars is the frames rot out primarily in the rear where they curve up to clear the rear axle, and sometimes into the trailing arm mounts (RWD cars) and around the jack locator holes. Cars with the 200R4 and 700R4 can have issues because it took a few years for GM to work the bugs out. And the computer controlled carb is a tough beast to manage, particularly now that it's obsolete. Yes, the old radials are dangerous. They can blow up without any warning at all. This car must have been stored on blocks or jackstands with the tires deflated and kept from UV exposure. This car is super super nice, and that's almost it's downfall. You can't do much with it but look at it. If you drive it very much, you put miles on it and then it's not like new anymore. It might be better if it had 15, 20, 25K on it and you could drive it to car shows and things and enjoy it.
My grandmother had one of these when I was younger. The best horn I've ever heard on a car. I can remember sitting in the backseat and playing with the reading lamps and the cigarette lighters.
Wow Wizard! Thank you for sharing this great Buick with us. That generation of Riviera was a high point for the nameplate in sales and buyer acceptance. Many people who could afford the Cadillac Eldorado sister car bought the Riviera instead because of those beautiful curves in the design as opposed to the more squared off, angular Cadillac. What a treat!
That is where I live. I worked at that dealership in highschool. Worked on all the Buicks back in the day. Those things rode so nice. Really cool for you to put on your channel 👍👍
Sometimes difficult to determine if it's blue or if it's gray. If what Mrs.Wizard says the interior is gray, then it's an EXACT replica of my '85 Toronado. (Mine had a moonroof), That was THE "it car" of it's day. I would KKIILLLL for one EXACTLY like this one if it were a Toronado!!!!!!! Even the steering wheel is nearly EXCATLY like mine (something quite rare). You know? They had their faults and shortcomings as does every generation of vehicles but they were incredibly beautiful for their time. Road excellent, had descent handling, slightly underpowered, quiet and plush as they get and trimmed out to the nines. IMPECCABLE!
I really hope this one will go to someone who will know how preserve it. My 1st car was a 1979 Riviera & the memories flood back upon seeing this one. As much as i seek to have one again & know this generation inside & out, I would also experience unhealthy fear of driving it. It is too nice now for frequent road use. Euro-Asian Bob... who is this man!? He summons fire without flint or tinder!
I totally agree. I had a '79 Toronado (same platform) and loved that car. It had the same colour interior as this Riv. Tons of memories. I miss these big FWD boats!
Super sweet Riviera. A friend of mines Mom had one. It was like driving Cadillac. I had an 82 Cutlass Supreme that was the same gray paint.. Definitely a museum worthy automobile.
My grandmother had this same car when I was a kid (same color and everything). I can still smell the tree air freshener and hear Doris Day playing on the am radio when watching this video.
I had a 1985 riviera as my first car. Mine was white with a burgundy top. My parents bought it for me to drive in 1994. It was sold in 1995. 76k miles on it. Had one little split in the vinyl top. I would like to have another one eventually. That one is amazing. I would like to find one that is in good enough shape to be able to drive it without being scared.
Great post Car Wizard - thanks for sharing. This is the last year of this beautiful, classic body style. When in college, I owned a first year - 1979 Riviera S-Type with the turbo 3.8 liter six. Red over red. Wish I still had it. A great example here provoking a great memory.
We had a 1980 Riviera and it had an very comfortable ride, and was quiet as a church inside, and with no tranny hump to deal with, there was tons of seating toom inside. That big engine on a front wheel drive allowed it to track through snow like it was on rails.
When I was 22, I sold cars for a Buick dealership. The Riviera’s were fun to sell. This is an interesting trim level. The Sport wheel was rare. There is one option that was available that this car doesn’t have that was available on the Riviera. IIRC, the Riviera was one of the first cars that was available with a Bose stereo. This one will be a neat one to watch on BaT
My dad had an 85 T type turbo white Riviera. When we would pull up to the gas station people would surround it like it was a Rolls-Royce. Beautiful car
Best sounding horn, ever!. Those transmissions were used in the fwd GMC motor homes. Very nice vehicle. Hopefully it goes to someone who will appreciate and preserve this pristine piece of automotive history. 👍👍👍
It's the "trumpet horn" option on cadillac it was U09 I think. It is 4 horns a, c, d & f. The option was around from i think late 70's until 2000 over the years the horns did vary. With some looking like trumpets others like normal auto horns. You can use any of them though if you want to install a set. Just be sure to check as mounting and wiring will vary as some use the bolt as a ground others have a positive and negative terminal on each.
I actually installed one of those 4 note horns on my Marauder. Stuck two 40 amp relays in to provide ample power to each pair. It sounds a little bit off since I cut the brackets short and one of the notes is old and mostly functions, but it is just as loud as the video seems to show. It's hilarious beeping it since it fits the car so well and its so distinctive.
The older i get, the more i appreciate personal luxury coupes with the torquey v8. Not fast, but comfortable and smooth riding with a nice interior. You can get a coupe still, but everything became German so it has to handle really well and have sport bucket seats.
I worked at a Oldsmobile, Cadillac dealer in 1985, and once had to deliver a brand new toranado to a customer. They were quite the luxury car back then
Dang. This takes my back. I had an ‘85 Lesabre “Collectors edition” same color, same interior color. I MISS those comfy couch like seats. Was a BEAUTIFUL car. Rode like a cloud (I had Moog overload springs and Monroe heavy duty gas shocks installed), handled well. It was sluggish with an Olds 307 in comparison to my brothers 88 caprice with a 305 and even my 73 Century with a 350, but it drove nicely and actually got about 28mpg highway.
I bought a 1984 Buick LeSabre Limited coupe from Copart in Iowa in 2017. It still has about 64,000 original miles and is in mint condition. Yes, it has the Oldsmobile 307 V8.
I have a set of those horns that I have not decided what vehicle in the fleet is going to receive them. I kept them off a 1990 Buick Park Avenue. Greatest car horns.
80's Uniroyal Tigerpaws were the eelskins of the tire world, for any car with a v8. Good luck getting traction in the rain, just spin one tire all day and go nowhere. You could literally get stuck on an uphill entrance that had a fresh asphalt sealcoat. That buick is a beauty!
I had Uniroyal Tigerpaws as the OEM tires, on my then new 1991 Chevy Silverado. Good street tires, until it rained or snowed, then they weren't very effective.
@@mikemullay5622 Yeah. On my 80 Olds 88, they were awful. The car had decent power, and you never wanted to pull out onto a wet road unless there was plenty of distance til the next car was on you. Spin Spin Spin. Put a set of Goodrich T/A's on it and omgosh what a change! Actually became fun to rip it!
@@glennc.2183 RWD was my problem. Litterally got stuck pulling up to a drivethru because it was an uphill grade with smooth asphalt. They look at you funny when your annihilating a tire trying to pull up to the window!! XD
Davis that Car is a TIME CAPSULE🤩.....Amazing 👀 it is hard to believe but there it is in all of its glory😇.....Thanks Mr Wizard & Mrs wizard 👍... Shoe🇺🇸
My dad had one in 85 he said it was a best in the snow that was his first used car he always bought new great car they don't build them like that anymore
This is the 1979 - 1985 GM E-body. This was the last platform from GM to be FWD with a longitudinally mounted engine. All FWD GM's from 1986 onward was transverse mounted; GM has not made a longitudinally mounted FWD car since.
A beautiful car no doubt. I ordered a 1983 Riv from the dealer. Two years after 'I sold it, I bought an 85 Riv. I currently own a 1982 and another 1985. For the true purist, the rear bumper fillers were replaced and painted. They were fragile and under the best conditions cracked and finally went missing in pieces. I can tell that they are not factory original by the extra vertical seam on the two sides. It was a wise choice to replace them.
My mom had the 1984 special ordered from the dealership midnight blue with the leather outside half top light blue seats dark blue very soft and true spoke rims nice white walls w/ thin yellow trimming on the tires... you won't find one like that because it was a special order...
That is absolutely beautiful, if I had loads of money and a large property it would be a keeper for sure and maybe the odd mile here and there to get the feel of it from time to time, someone will be very lucky to own it.
I remember in 1987 going to Washington DC for my wife's 10 year high school reunion. We went on the cheap and arrived at Dulles after a long flight and went to pick up our cheapo compact rental car and it was like a Seinfeld episode that was still 10 years away. They had the reservation. But they had no car. The only thing they had left was a Riviera, which, after some back and forth, was ours for the week. It had a touch screen. It was sweet. So it was late at night and we rolled up to our motel in DC - a standard U-shaped, 2 level affair with a pool in the middle. At check in the manager eyed the Riv and said "is that your car? You gonna park it here?" I said we paid the $5 a day for insurance, so yeah. The good thing was that the hotel had security on site. Two large men with automatic weapons walked the perimeter on the second level all night. Long story short. We found a new place the next morning and enjoyed the car the whole week.
Holy shit, Wizard!! You had a full beard in '85?! 😂 That car must have been kept in a giant ziplock bag. Just incredible. Thanks, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard! That car is flabbergasting. ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
Hey Wizard & Mrs Wizard, great time warp intro, I love your car salesman hat!!! Thus beautiful Buick is a true time capsule!!! Thanks for sharing this exciting video!!!! 👍👍🙂
That is awesome to see a nice "regular car" kept like this. One of my friends inherited one very similar from their grandfather little higher maybe 14,000 miles. Never thought I'd see another 80's Riviera like that and this one beats it by a good 10,000 miles. In addition really optioned up auto ride, auto hvac has to be pretty rare like this.
Beautiful car. My parents had two of these when I was a kid. I remember my mom driving them the most although she said that having a riviera was my dad's idea. I didn't appreciate them when I was a kid but these are nice looking cars
I had the 1984 Rivera Blue on Blue in this body style. It was the 1984 Olympic edition. It was my very first car. I haven’t watched this video yet.. not sure I can. I loved that car.
My buddy's wife had an 1982 to 1986 Riviera that she had totaled after hitting a deer. Other than the color it looked identical. He then took two early fifties Ford f-100 pickups and made an extended cab, he put the Buick front wheel drive engine and front axle assembly in it. Then had a buddy of his who was a commercial welder make all the mounting and fitting and make a rear axle assembly for it. This was about 1988. The results was a school bus yellow Buick powered front wheel extended cab drive F100.
I’ve been to Indiana a couple times & saw more classic cars than I’ve seen in any other state, Idk the reason but they are really into classic cars in that state.
No doubt we will get an update on this beautiful car in the near future and hopefully hopefully a museum will get ahold of it and they no doubt will keep it as it in mint condition. Stunning automobile to say the least…
Stuff like that is real. I remember a buddy of mine got a hold of a 56 chevy belair 2 door hardtop in the early 90s with just 2,000 miles on it. Story was the husband bought it new and planned to go traveling with the wife in it and it had old gas station road maps in the glove box. He died shortly after he bought it of a heart attack and the wife didnt want to part with it and lived to around 90.
Gm used that delco radio in everything back then. It really cheapened the higher level brands, olds buick and cadillac having the same exact radio as in a chevy and pontiac. Same hvac controls too in alot of cases.
My Riviera had the digital climate control like this one, and I swapped the instrument cluster for the factory digital cluster, and replaced that delco radio for a JVC El Kameleon cd player for a completely button free (except for the trip meter stalk) dashboard. It was a huge improvement.
my parents had a 84 toronado ( pretty much the same car) that i ended up with in the early 90s. It had every option including moon roof the window sticker had an msrp of 20600. amazing traction in the snow and was really the best riding car i ever had. the seats were amazing. The 307 never gave a single issue...but the trans was another story. 18mpg most of the time.
In 1985 I was a car salesman at a multi-line new car dealer and Buick was one of them. I sold a couple Rivs just like this car and they were pretty nice for the day as most GM cars of that time were absolute junk..
Man, I have always had a soft spot for these 1980s American luxury cars. That "slab sided" dashboard just speaks to me somehow. So much fake wood! I had an '86 Oldsmobile Delta 88 for several years back in the day. Say what you will about GM's many flaws -- they can make a *QUIET* car. Overstuffed, plush seats - it's like driving your living room sofa down the highway. So comfortable. I know this is going to sell for far more than I can afford to pay. So amazing!
Oh they're absolutely nice cruising and highway cars. Marshmallow ride, seats like a sofa, very comfortable. I had several of them over the years. Just not particularly powerful and loaded with emissions controls that can cause problems.
@@CR7659 Indeed...cars from the mid-70s onward, into the late 80s belong to the "malaise era", of low power and quality issues.....not worth forking over the big bucks for cars from that era!
@@alexanderryan1176 I disagree that the malaise era ended in 1983. IMO, more like 1987-1988. The GM full size cars had plenty of problems in the mid-80s, for example, that finally smoothed out by late 80s.
One of my neighbors back in the 1990's had 1 of these and it was mint. I was a kid at the time, and I called it the "R" mobile cuz it has so many "R's" everywhere!
This is such a special car! I really enjoyed meeting the original owner! Look for the NO RESERVE Bring a Trailer auction listing coming soon!
Must have been hard to list it for sale man. I would have been so tempted to keep it, even if only for a while. Nice find!
You almost have to sell it because you don’t want to have to touch it…Once you change it 100% factory game is over

Haha. I really liked David in his 80's getup. Bob is really getting some museum pieces.
80's Uniroyal Tigerpaws were the eelskins of the tire world, for any car with a v8.
Good luck getting traction in the rain, just spin one tire all day and go nowhere.
You could literally get stuck on an uphill entrance that had a fresh asphalt sealcoat.
That buick is a beauty!
still remember the tiger paw commercials on TV! They forgot to rustproof the front support its rusty thank goodness they got the rest
Traction was not an issue with those on this car, fwd with that v8 rectified that. The rwd cars were another story.
My parents had the Oldsmobile version the Toronado. It had the digital dash and plush seats. It would float over bumps. We loved that car.
Was a little surprised to see the half shafts.. car looks like it’d have a solid axle rear at first glance. To me at least. Solid video Wizard family!
Hey wizard, would love to see more of these vintage Time Capsule presentations! Thanks so much!
Holy shit, Wizard!! You had a full beard in '85?! 😂
That car must have been kept in a giant ziplock bag.
I graduated high school in 1985 in Lafayette, Indiana. Kendrick Buick was a mile from my house.
What a great find!
The mid '60s Buick Rivieras were the best. Designed by Bill Mitchell, who also introduced frameless front door glass.
Gosh, what a masterpiece of design that Gm used to produce. Gorgeous!!
I had one of those, white with red vinyl roof and interior and it was a heluva sweet ride. This video brings back great memories, thanks for sharing!
I was 20 and entering the Air Force when this rolled off the line. It sure has had a better 37 years than I have!
That Red Alpha he has is a good inexpensive start to a classic car.The Riv is a new car.
I had the 1984 Rivera Blue on Blue in this body style. It was the 1984 Olympic edition. It was my very first car. I haven’t watched this video yet.. not sure I can. I loved that car.
GM needs to buy this back and display it and show what Buick used to be about, attainable luxury.
What a beautiful classic American car, it's as though it was sent through a time warp!
Thanks for posting.
Brings back memories, my grandfather had a diesel one of these.
Love your car disciptions. Highly inclusive of what was offered on the cars. You añd the misses do a great job
Oh man, that stereo is giving me flashbacks to the Buick Century T-Type my folks had in the 80s
Would be real curious to see what that car sells for it just isn't a very collectible car but as a time capsule it is amazing.
Very nice! Around 85 is when all
Manuf started losing there luster! Some went a bit longer, others ended sooner!
* their
What a beautiful example! That car is immaculate.
Gm used that delco radio in everything back then. It really cheapened the higher level brands, olds buick and cadillac having the same exact radio as in a chevy and pontiac. Same hvac controls too in alot of cases.
Bro, it's has "Concert Sound"!
My Riviera had the digital climate control like this one, and I swapped the instrument cluster for the factory digital cluster, and replaced that delco radio for a JVC El Kameleon cd player for a completely button free (except for the trip meter stalk) dashboard.
It was a huge improvement.
Just lovely car!!!!! This is classiness personified! I'd be scared to drive it
This car rides nicer than it looks one of my favorite vehicles that I ever owned.
my parents had a 84 toronado ( pretty much the same car) that i ended up with in the early 90s. It had every option including moon roof the window sticker had an msrp of 20600. amazing traction in the snow and was really the best riding car i ever had. the seats were amazing. The 307 never gave a single issue...but the trans was another story. 18mpg most of the time.
I remember Bob letting Tyler drive. Yes, Bob outdid himself with this Rivvy. Definitely a unicorn.
@@curbozerboomer1773 Yeah. They aren’t really good cars.
@@curbozerboomer1773 Not really the malaise era ended in 83, not the late 80s. Plenty of V8s were making 200+ HP and 300+ lb ft of torque by 85.
Headliners in all those GM 80s cars fell down. I had a couple myself that did that
👌🏾💎I had a 1984 Riviera as a gift from Dad, in September 1986 as a birthday and a high school present… one of my favorite cars ever!!!!
Beautiful car, no surprise it looks so good with that low mileage and assumed care by the original owner.
What an amazing car. I wish manufacturers built cars this beautiful still
As the Riviera is going up on the lift, you can see the 928 in the background. It almost seems to be saying:
"Seriously guys?"
😁
Beautiful car I love Rivieras. I have a 92 it is a joy to drive. When I bought it, it had only been driven
