Did you notice this in the Jungle Book? When "off-model" is "on-model" in character animation!

In Walt Disney's original Jungle Book the characters are sometimes drawn with thumbs and sometimes without them. In this animation analysis we have a quick look at why and when this happens and how animators can use this in their own character animation.
This is a wonderful example of how character design for animation doesn't have to be a static thing - especially in 2D you can change it to adapt to certain situations.

This is something I'm appreciating more and more about animation. Going off model, breaking the joints etc. are tools animators have which just aren't available in live action, which can be used to enhance the story and storytelling in so many ways

It's used a lot in spongebob! ^_^ most fish, Patrick, and Plankton, to name a few, normally have flippers/nubs but will grow a thumb or even a whole hand when the gesture calls for it. I love it!

i think i saw this type of trick frequently used in tv cartoon shows like Gumball and We Bare Bear and other cartoon. very interesting video i ever seen, it changed the game 😭
