The line "The Tower's gonna fall and you silently rebuild it all" is one of my favorite saddest lines here that I think goes overlooked a lot. If we take 'The Tower' with it's tarot meaning, this line is like saying your life will fall apart while you keep up a smile with everyone else and don't let anyone help you, silently rebuilding it all while pretending to others everything is okay...
Oh, that makes a lot more sense! I thought it was a reference to the Tower of Babel - an effort to do something great thwarted as you're left scrambling to recollect your lost knowledge, humiliated by your failure. Eventually trying again only for the cycle to be perpetuated, so much to the point where you preemptively expect all you do to fail, though I can't think of any reason to keep trying then, so that interpretation falls apart (lol). I like your version more! :)
"Go on, praise me like a god." I love this line. This entire song is amazing! And especially at the end, it makes it seem like she is just asking anyone to "Please see me." It reminds me of gifted kid burnout.
(warning, lots of text ahead) Even if Ghost wasn't focusing on the meaning of the lyrics of this song too hard, I still think there are a lot of interesting themes that can be drawn between the lyrics and the PV. I'd say the biggest thing that I think is running through this song is the concerning pairing of medicine (specifically psychiatry) and random chance, possibly alluding to medical malpractice or debates surrounding the legitimacy/ethics of psychiatry as a practice. Despite Teto being portrayed as a genius ("a miracle // something theoretical") and somebody worth praising "like a god", there is also frequent use of uncertain language or terms relating to chaos or chance. Phrases like "I guess", "I reckon", or, more literally "God-knows-where", "Flip a coin" and "Who will I become?" might be used to suggest the singer doubts themself in their choices or to suggest that, regardless of their confidence, it isn't earnt confidence and they are not as knowledgable as they seem. Knowledge as something questionable or illegitimate can also be seen in the coloured symbols that pop up a few times throughout the PV. They're being taught on a whiteboard, and Teto has distinct reactions to each one, to the point of censoring the orange-yellow symbol completely, but they don't have an obvious meaning, possibly referencing how subjective or dubious information is being passed off as fact in the practice. I think it was a really interesting choice to use a dartboard in the PV; it clearly carries on with the theme of chance and uncertainty, with Teto literally being pinned to the board and pierced through the chest in her chair. It makes me think of how medical practitioners can never be 100% accurate - they have to diagnose, prescribe, and hope for the best. The danger factor of darts is shown very clearly, but the practitioners are portrayed as both the perpetrator and the victim. They throw darts figuratively speaking when they prescribe medication, hoping they won't cause too much harm. However, in a very self-centered way, the person who gets hit is Teto in a chair (a chair that reminds me of stereotypical "sit back and tell me about how you're feeling" psychotherapy, but that could just be me), possibly because 'missing' so to speak also hurts the doctor because their prestige and legitimacy are seen as just as important as the safety of their patients. The line that made me start putting all of this together was "The Tower's gonna fall and you'll silently rebuild it all". The "Tower" is capitalised, suggesting it's talking about the tarot card The Tower, which represents (surprise surprise) sudden change and chaos, possibly stemming from higher knowledge or understanding. Therefore, you could interpret the line as meaning "Change is going to occur (The Tower is gonna fall, as depicted in the tarot card) and you are going to endure it silently for the best, because I think it is for the best", possibly in reference to changes brought on by a change in prescription, which would be in line with Teto *literally shoveling random pills down people's throats* in the PV. Towards the end of the PV, a different side to Teto is hinted at, where her heart is pulled out of her chest behind the random symbols that she has, literally speaking, internalised. The conflict between the symbols representing information that may be meaningless or just debatable and the emotional symbol of the heart reads to me like she has been working off pure facts and logic in place of where her heart should be (again, literally), and she realises, with her heart in her hand, that she's become heartless, or that her practice has been neglecting the subjective, emotional side of things. All of this occurs with the 'normal' scenes for the chorus imposed over her, suggesting that this debate is occurring in the background, failing to make a difference in her behaviour, until it disappears completely, replaced by repetitions of "Go on, praise me like a god", with her standing, then collapsing, on a pedestal, surrounded by clones that worship her. Overall, I think Teto is characterised in a fairly classic anti-hero fashion; she wants to help people, to be a "miracle", but the method that she chooses gives ambiguous results at best until she steps back and realises that she's lost her way, but can't stop and turn back - not only that, but she has made an impact, changed the field of study entirely, and not in a way that she likes. I don't want to jump to any conclusions on what exactly the song is criticising; it reads to me like a scathing parody of the psychiatric practice, but it could also be in reference to a specific, hypothetical psychiatrist and this is simply a dramatic narrative, or it could be applied to a wider field entirely. Regardless, Teto's tragic career progression is best summarised as "A psychedelic lie... a line between the villains and the rest."

I might be projecting a bit here, but this song makes me think of someone who was constantly praised, and therefore they felt the need to be perfect all the time to live up to that praise, hence the lyrics "A couple years ago I was told that I would be a miracle." As well as someone who let their parents decide their life for them. Here's my theory explained a bit more: At 0:42 it shows Teto seemingly showing other versions of themself ideas that they drew on a drawing board, I think that this is meant to represent Teto thinking of brilliant ideas, but Teto always becoming too anxious of the ideas not being good enough to actually execute said ideas, hence the other Tetos shaking their head at every one of Tetos ideas until eventually Teto just gives up because nothing is ever good enough for themself. This could also represent how Teto may have wanted to work some other job, but their family members pressured them into becoming a Pharmacist instead. I think that because of the constant praise Teto heard, they may have occasionally have an inflated ego, hence the lyrics "Go on, praise me like a god!" possibly representing how since Teto gave into their parents' demands for them to become a doctor/pharmacist, their parents praised them "Like a god." The lyrics "No matter what I say, it's confusing either way" can also represent how Teto may have attempted to communicate with their parents on how they didn't want to be a pharmacist and wanted to be something else, but how their parents wouldn't understand. As for the lyrics "Stars always watching from afar, turning who you are" can represent Teto feeling like their parents are always watching from afar, judging their every move, further making them feel like they have to be perfect 24/7. I think that the lyrics that follow, "In the end, it left me delicately scarred beyond pathological facade" further back up my idea. I could go on and on about all the symbolism that I see in this, but I'll try and keep this theory short and sweet, so I just have one last point to make: At 4:08 We see Teto standing in front of a lot of versions of themself that are bowing down to Teto, however at 4:29 Teto is seen sitting down with their head facing the ground making it not visible to the viewer. Again, I'm probably just projecting here but I really do wonder if this is meant to represent how because Teto was "Praised like a god" so much, they have an inflated self esteem where they view themselves as a god- They're also probably praised like a god because they seem to be a doctor and or a pharmacist and people who work in the medical field are often praised. I believe that at 4:29 when Teto sits down, looking much less happy and confident, this represents how whenever Teto fails at something or does something wrong, they let it get into their head and feel like a failure who let everyone down; This can also represent how much pressure is put on doctors and if their patient dies or if they're just not able to cure their patient then they're often criticized quite heavily. The vibe I'm getting is unappreciated work and original ideas (the whiteboard drawings were close to her heart) and the world around you loving a facade that you hate when all you want to do is just make what you want to, but everyone else says no. Every new GHOST song is so addicting like at first I always think "Oh this is cute time to move on" and then I listen to it on loop for the next month. capital letters spirit how do you do that
As someone with tentative experience in the field this song reads to me like bluntly about the struggles of a psychaitrist. Psychatrists routinely have to make estimations and difficult calls on the patient's mental state and mistakes can cause very severe damage. Too little medication or too much medication, the type of medication, the diagnosis itself, all can sometimes feel like a gamble where losing means you potentially condemn a patient to severe suffering you can't even fully comprehend and/or side effects of the drugs. The song's talk about morality and randomness to me read as the portrayal of the seperation between a seemingly godlike professional and a monster who ruins lifes can be utterly unpredictable. It's often extremly difficult for new psychaitrists to cope or come to terms with this responsibility and seemingly random outcomes.

there’s a lot of references to other ghost songs, like the “never ending phobia” part, the background having the flashing colors of housewife radio and the art being mostly flat colored, praise me like a god could reference several things cause ghost’s made several songs about gods or religion. there’s more than just this, read the other comments that mention the references.
GHOST said in the description that these lyrics were made more to rhyme rather than have meaning, but I love analyzing their songs so I'm still gonna do that with this one :) While I do agree with the gifted kid interpretation of this song, I think it could also be about schizophrenia because: - The mention of aripiprazole, which is a medication that can be used to treat schizophrenia. All of the pills and the scene where Teto feeds pills to the colored figures could be a reference to medication being the main treatment for schizophrenia. - The line "go on, praise me like a god" and the ending scene where Teto is being worshipped by her clones could be considered delusions of grandeur, a symptom of schizophrenia. - The whole song reminds me of word salads. Many lines sound like a bunch of words mixed together without actually conveying any true meaning in a sentence. (Or maybe I'm just not looking deep enough into the lyrics? Idk) It feels like Teto is confident that she's saying something that makes sense, but it's just not coming out coherently. I thought this was worth pointing out because it opens up a lot of possibilities for the story. She might be a doctor not taken seriously for her work. The whiteboard creatures could be new viruses she discovered, but her clones (who could represent other doctors) don't believe her because she's schizophrenic. Or maybe they just don't understand her because of word salad, tying in with the line "no matter what I say, it's confusing either way" She might not literally be a doctor, but she sees herself as one because she's trying to self diagnose herself with one of those viruses. Like in the scene where she opens up her chest to reveal the whiteboard creatures. Once again, she isn't believed/understood because of her schizophrenia. Near the end, she ends up pulling her heart out rather than a virus, and it disturbs her because she realizes that her doctors were right. This also relates to the title "Pathological Facade" because her supposed illness was in her mind the whole time. Or she really could be a burnt out gifted kid who has trouble keeping up with expectations because of her mental state. It still works! I'm just a psychology student though, not schizophrenic. Feel free to agree/disagree with me!

I love the whole feel of this song, especially since its not written in 4/4 time, it feels like the beat is just... missing something. But it works. It feels off in a good way.
You might feel like it's missing something because of the 7/4 time signature - you expect there to be a rest beat or a note to conclude the progression after the 7th, but there isn't one, it literally skips a beat (because 4/4 is so standard) since the first 4 bars are presented as being a normal chunk of 4/4. Sorry if my terminology is off here, I'm not super knowledgable about music theory
Songs with meaning are great but honestly, sometimes songs with no meaning at all are just as great. It scratches the same itch as a lot of nonsense poetry does for me, where its just about having cadence and rhythm that feels good to do and it fun. Like damn so many lines from this just feel great to say, they're so tasty, good mouth feel and brain feel.

I relate this song way too much. I grew up hearing from my parents and teachers that I had such a bright future - I made straight A's. I took up art. I did clubs. But when I turned 17 I started hearing voices and spiraled into early onset schizophrenia. And for I am med resistant and my symptoms are pretty crippling, so I am currently on disability. So... I do feel like I let my parents and my teachers down, my antipsychotics don't help that much, and there is just so much of my early life I feel like ended up being a façade because I was on the spectrum and started masking my emotions all the time. The fact that this song so very nails that feeling AND even mentions Aripiprazole - an antipsychotic I have been on before (that didn't work for me) really just resonates with me.

If we take 'The Tower' with it's tarot meaning, this line is like saying your life will fall apart while you keep up a smile with everyone else and don't let anyone help you, silently rebuilding it all while pretending to others everything is okay...

Even if Ghost wasn't focusing on the meaning of the lyrics of this song too hard, I still think there are a lot of interesting themes that can be drawn between the lyrics and the PV. I'd say the biggest thing that I think is running through this song is the concerning pairing of medicine (specifically psychiatry) and random chance, possibly alluding to medical malpractice or debates surrounding the legitimacy/ethics of psychiatry as a practice.
Despite Teto being portrayed as a genius ("a miracle // something theoretical") and somebody worth praising "like a god", there is also frequent use of uncertain language or terms relating to chaos or chance. Phrases like "I guess", "I reckon", or, more literally "God-knows-where", "Flip a coin" and "Who will I become?" might be used to suggest the singer doubts themself in their choices or to suggest that, regardless of their confidence, it isn't earnt confidence and they are not as knowledgable as they seem. Knowledge as something questionable or illegitimate can also be seen in the coloured symbols that pop up a few times throughout the PV. They're being taught on a whiteboard, and Teto has distinct reactions to each one, to the point of censoring the orange-yellow symbol completely, but they don't have an obvious meaning, possibly referencing how subjective or dubious information is being passed off as fact in the practice.
I think it was a really interesting choice to use a dartboard in the PV; it clearly carries on with the theme of chance and uncertainty, with Teto literally being pinned to the board and pierced through the chest in her chair. It makes me think of how medical practitioners can never be 100% accurate - they have to diagnose, prescribe, and hope for the best. The danger factor of darts is shown very clearly, but the practitioners are portrayed as both the perpetrator and the victim. They throw darts figuratively speaking when they prescribe medication, hoping they won't cause too much harm. However, in a very self-centered way, the person who gets hit is Teto in a chair (a chair that reminds me of stereotypical "sit back and tell me about how you're feeling" psychotherapy, but that could just be me), possibly because 'missing' so to speak also hurts the doctor because their prestige and legitimacy are seen as just as important as the safety of their patients.
The line that made me start putting all of this together was "The Tower's gonna fall and you'll silently rebuild it all". The "Tower" is capitalised, suggesting it's talking about the tarot card The Tower, which represents (surprise surprise) sudden change and chaos, possibly stemming from higher knowledge or understanding. Therefore, you could interpret the line as meaning "Change is going to occur (The Tower is gonna fall, as depicted in the tarot card) and you are going to endure it silently for the best, because I think it is for the best", possibly in reference to changes brought on by a change in prescription, which would be in line with Teto *literally shoveling random pills down people's throats* in the PV.
Towards the end of the PV, a different side to Teto is hinted at, where her heart is pulled out of her chest behind the random symbols that she has, literally speaking, internalised. The conflict between the symbols representing information that may be meaningless or just debatable and the emotional symbol of the heart reads to me like she has been working off pure facts and logic in place of where her heart should be (again, literally), and she realises, with her heart in her hand, that she's become heartless, or that her practice has been neglecting the subjective, emotional side of things. All of this occurs with the 'normal' scenes for the chorus imposed over her, suggesting that this debate is occurring in the background, failing to make a difference in her behaviour, until it disappears completely, replaced by repetitions of "Go on, praise me like a god", with her standing, then collapsing, on a pedestal, surrounded by clones that worship her.
Overall, I think Teto is characterised in a fairly classic anti-hero fashion; she wants to help people, to be a "miracle", but the method that she chooses gives ambiguous results at best until she steps back and realises that she's lost her way, but can't stop and turn back - not only that, but she has made an impact, changed the field of study entirely, and not in a way that she likes.
I don't want to jump to any conclusions on what exactly the song is criticising; it reads to me like a scathing parody of the psychiatric practice, but it could also be in reference to a specific, hypothetical psychiatrist and this is simply a dramatic narrative, or it could be applied to a wider field entirely.
Regardless, Teto's tragic career progression is best summarised as "A psychedelic lie... a line between the villains and the rest."

I might be projecting a bit here, but this song makes me think of someone who was constantly praised, and therefore they felt the need to be perfect all the time to live up to that praise, hence the lyrics "A couple years ago I was told that I would be a miracle." As well as someone who let their parents decide their life for them. Here's my theory explained a bit more:
At 0:42 it shows Teto seemingly showing other versions of themself ideas that they drew on a drawing board, I think that this is meant to represent Teto thinking of brilliant ideas, but Teto always becoming too anxious of the ideas not being good enough to actually execute said ideas, hence the other Tetos shaking their head at every one of Tetos ideas until eventually Teto just gives up because nothing is ever good enough for themself. This could also represent how Teto may have wanted to work some other job, but their family members pressured them into becoming a Pharmacist instead.
I think that because of the constant praise Teto heard, they may have occasionally have an inflated ego, hence the lyrics "Go on, praise me like a god!" possibly representing how since Teto gave into their parents' demands for them to become a doctor/pharmacist, their parents praised them "Like a god."
The lyrics "No matter what I say, it's confusing either way" can also represent how Teto may have attempted to communicate with their parents on how they didn't want to be a pharmacist and wanted to be something else, but how their parents wouldn't understand.
As for the lyrics "Stars always watching from afar, turning who you are" can represent Teto feeling like their parents are always watching from afar, judging their every move, further making them feel like they have to be perfect 24/7. I think that the lyrics that follow, "In the end, it left me delicately scarred beyond pathological facade" further back up my idea.
I could go on and on about all the symbolism that I see in this, but I'll try and keep this theory short and sweet, so I just have one last point to make:
At 4:08 We see Teto standing in front of a lot of versions of themself that are bowing down to Teto, however at 4:29 Teto is seen sitting down with their head facing the ground making it not visible to the viewer. Again, I'm probably just projecting here but I really do wonder if this is meant to represent how because Teto was "Praised like a god" so much, they have an inflated self esteem where they view themselves as a god- They're also probably praised like a god because they seem to be a doctor and or a pharmacist and people who work in the medical field are often praised.
I believe that at 4:29 when Teto sits down, looking much less happy and confident, this represents how whenever Teto fails at something or does something wrong, they let it get into their head and feel like a failure who let everyone down; This can also represent how much pressure is put on doctors and if their patient dies or if they're just not able to cure their patient then they're often criticized quite heavily.

As someone with tentative experience in the field this song reads to me like bluntly about the struggles of a psychaitrist.
Psychatrists routinely have to make estimations and difficult calls on the patient's mental state and mistakes can cause very severe damage. Too little medication or too much medication, the type of medication, the diagnosis itself, all can sometimes feel like a gamble where losing means you potentially condemn a patient to severe suffering you can't even fully comprehend and/or side effects of the drugs. The song's talk about morality and randomness to me read as the portrayal of the seperation between a seemingly godlike professional and a monster who ruins lifes can be utterly unpredictable. It's often extremly difficult for new psychaitrists to cope or come to terms with this responsibility and seemingly random outcomes.

GHOST said in the description that these lyrics were made more to rhyme rather than have meaning, but I love analyzing their songs so I'm still gonna do that with this one :) While I do agree with the gifted kid interpretation of this song, I think it could also be about schizophrenia because:
- The mention of aripiprazole, which is a medication that can be used to treat schizophrenia. All of the pills and the scene where Teto feeds pills to the colored figures could be a reference to medication being the main treatment for schizophrenia.
- The line "go on, praise me like a god" and the ending scene where Teto is being worshipped by her clones could be considered delusions of grandeur, a symptom of schizophrenia.
- The whole song reminds me of word salads. Many lines sound like a bunch of words mixed together without actually conveying any true meaning in a sentence. (Or maybe I'm just not looking deep enough into the lyrics? Idk) It feels like Teto is confident that she's saying something that makes sense, but it's just not coming out coherently.
I thought this was worth pointing out because it opens up a lot of possibilities for the story. She might be a doctor not taken seriously for her work. The whiteboard creatures could be new viruses she discovered, but her clones (who could represent other doctors) don't believe her because she's schizophrenic. Or maybe they just don't understand her because of word salad, tying in with the line "no matter what I say, it's confusing either way"
She might not literally be a doctor, but she sees herself as one because she's trying to self diagnose herself with one of those viruses. Like in the scene where she opens up her chest to reveal the whiteboard creatures. Once again, she isn't believed/understood because of her schizophrenia. Near the end, she ends up pulling her heart out rather than a virus, and it disturbs her because she realizes that her doctors were right. This also relates to the title "Pathological Facade" because her supposed illness was in her mind the whole time.
Or she really could be a burnt out gifted kid who has trouble keeping up with expectations because of her mental state. It still works! I'm just a psychology student though, not schizophrenic. Feel free to agree/disagree with me!

I love the whole feel of this song, especially since its not written in 4/4 time, it feels like the beat is just... missing something. But it works. It feels off in a good way.
You might feel like it's missing something because of the 7/4 time signature - you expect there to be a rest beat or a note to conclude the progression after the 7th, but there isn't one, it literally skips a beat (because 4/4 is so standard) since the first 4 bars are presented as being a normal chunk of 4/4. Sorry if my terminology is off here, I'm not super knowledgable about music theory

Songs with meaning are great but honestly, sometimes songs with no meaning at all are just as great. It scratches the same itch as a lot of nonsense poetry does for me, where its just about having cadence and rhythm that feels good to do and it fun. Like damn so many lines from this just feel great to say, they're so tasty, good mouth feel and brain feel.

I relate this song way too much. I grew up hearing from my parents and teachers that I had such a bright future - I made straight A's. I took up art. I did clubs. But when I turned 17 I started hearing voices and spiraled into early onset schizophrenia. And for I am med resistant and my symptoms are pretty crippling, so I am currently on disability. So... I do feel like I let my parents and my teachers down, my antipsychotics don't help that much, and there is just so much of my early life I feel like ended up being a façade because I was on the spectrum and started masking my emotions all the time. The fact that this song so very nails that feeling AND even mentions Aripiprazole - an antipsychotic I have been on before (that didn't work for me) really just resonates with me.
