I just wanted you to know that I am not a seamstress but I am able to sew - a lot of the tutorials I found we a little complex for me. This is the easiest and fastest one I've seen. Absolutely love it. This will allow we to donate in volume.

Hospitals, doctors offices, nursing homes, etc. are begging for simple masks like this. There are posts all over Facebook asking for these simple masks. Then they can save their N95s for Coronvirus patients. I watched 10+ videos and liked yours best of all. I’m preparing to make these every day until we hear they no longer need them. Great job! IHad wanted to knit someMasks. Definitely do not listen to the rude a-hole people.You did a great thing posting the video to help. I am disgusted that people would take everything on the shelf and let other people get infected. It’s not like that’s going to help us spread. That’s going to help does a holes get sick more likely. And definitely shame on those people charging 30 to 40for a pattern. It disgusts me so much. I actually lost respect for somebody who said they wanted to capitalize on it. Showed their true colors. I wanted to make mass in charge maybe seven bucks a mask so that I can make some money while I’m out of work. But 30 to 40 is just outrageous. Your masks are cute. Sorry for the rant. I’m on your side😉

Use heavy weight Iron on Interfacing, lets less things like dust, pollen through, washes/dries well. If you are having an allergy attack wear one. This is a simple one and can be used in Non Virus areas. I do a 9" long X 6" wide. For adult females, I dart the nose area and chin and trim it down. Helps snug it up. Child do 1-2 inches shorter. Men add 1-2 inches long, 1-2 inches longer.
I just want to add: there are people on youtube selling face mask patterns for $30 and $40. Thank you for your generosity!

Sandy Jenkins I agree with you, Sandy. Why are people so unkind. Especially with COVID 19 turning our life upside down. I am still processing our new reality. God is probably sad that we can not even go to church. My Bible and library of Christian books are finally being read instead of just collecting dust on the bookshelves. This pandemic has been a blessing for my soul because I am spending at least a hour a day with God. Before pandemic, I was guilty of not even given God a thought during my whole day.
I have to tell you that after weeks of trying to make masks that I can make quickly, I found the perfect video. I am an essential worker and I supervise a group home. We don't have adequate PPE so I bought material, pulled the old sewing machine out from storage and began with the lessons. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I will have something to bring to my staff tomorrow!

I have been researching--- if you/we add a double layer of one-sided fusible interface to one of the layers of your outer fabric, it will increase the mask's filterability , more so than flannel. I love your simplistic pattern, because I don't want to spend too much time on steps that are non-essential and you have provided this. Don't give up and thank you from a person trying to navigate the easiest way to create. Even the nurses wearing PPE, they don't fit perfectly. Keep on keeping on.
I agree - it needs the fusable interfacing as long it is the right grade to keep out the virus. Woven fabrics like the cotton and flannel alone can't do that. I found this link to be the most informative.

Great video! Everyone should understand the point we have come to with this pandemic...Instead of getting on here stating the obvious about health standards, these are small things we can do when we have RUN OUT of medical grade PPE. Your tutorial was the most straight to the point, easy to follow I’ve seen by far. Awesome job and kudos for what you’re contributing 👏🏽

You had a great video. I have a question for anyone out there: I’m making masks for my family. I’m running into problems that elastic is too long for some of them. I shortened the elastic but even with pleats it's gapping at side. Someone told me that if I wrapped the elastic around the ear twice it would work. Any other suggestions? I sewed years ago and probably have forgotten more than I know but I’m not a real novice. L
I agree with you very easy to follow, what I find annoying is people charging for the masks, OK if they give the money to charity, but not to make money out of something so important
I'm a former home ec teacher, and professionally speaking, I think this was a super teaching video. I decided to hem the top placket so I could insert a filter. I also made one side t-shirt material and the other pillow case material. Thanks for the specifics!

Irma Sam I agree a great tutorial and very easy to understand. I wasn't going to make one but I keep touching my face and when I have to do shopping am aware I touch my face. Going to give it a try. I have subscribed. I have a friend who is looking after age care and she hasn't got any scrub type protection and I'm a quilter so don't make clothes but wondering if you have any tutorials on this. In Melbourne Australia like everywhere the ppe is hard to get and those working on the frontline don't have this gear. A group I'm in are also making scrub bags.
My face doesn't itch til I have PPE on. Psychological I think.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've made 8 masks from a pillow cover with high thread count, it took all day. I also realised that it is quite an art to make such a good tutorial as yours - which is effortless, encouraging and not too long. If someone was filming me making these masks, they'd have to cut most of footage of faffing and dropping things and go straight to 50sec of me screaming and kicking a chair. Thank you again, I feel much better now knowing I can make some more if needed and it is a huge relief for me to have a mask when I go shopping. I sent some to my parents in law. x
This is one of the better tutorials I've been able to find. I work in a hospital, and we're all wearing some version of these homemade masks (whether we want to or not). They're better than nothing. Thank you for posting this.
I was surprised to see you had some thumbs down as this was a very well done video. You gave ample instructions which were clear and easy to follow. You also said this was not for medical purposes but for those who wanted to have a face mask. I want to thank you for taking the time to put this together. I will be teaching women in Africa to make them and this is absolutely perfect!

Susan Stasi I don’t follow instructions easily. This was so very easy to follow. No need for a thumbs down. If you cannot follow it, move on to the next tutorial. Some people just wanna be mean is all.
As a nurse, I can see why some people would have concerns. I wouldn't go so far as to give a thumbs down but I see why some would. Nasty comments are out of line. While the video does a great job of explaining the steps, it's missing some crucial safety advice. Improperly handling a mask while removing it can easily cause self-contamination, which puts you more at risk. It's the biggest concerns of people wearing masks without the associated education. Plus, the tiny water droplets can get in your eyes, not just your nose/mouth. Without eye protection, you are still vulnerable. The mask can however catch any droplets you are releasing while speaking/sneezing/coughing. In the current time, it should only be used to protect others from yourself.
I would also recommend making the two sides different fabrics. While this shouldn't be a problem because you should never put a mask on that you have removed, people do it anyway.

After some rude comments that were left here I thought I would clarify something.
This mask style IS reversible. Common sense says you wash it /sanitize it after one use.
This is not a tutorial on making a HEPA or FDA approved mask. This tutorial is intended to teach other a very simple way to create a reusable, washable and reversible barrier they can wear on their face to protect themselves from bodily fluid and to remind them not to touch their mouth/ nose.
This is a dire time and providing a mask as I’ve made here in this video is not intended to keep you or others from not contracting covid-19... duh! So all you haters that feel you have to be rude and troll creators videos with sideways comments, why don’t you put that energy in to helping others❤️ Have a blessed day and may you find peace

Suggest to make a refillable layer, to refill 2 pieces of kitchen paper as filter. According to university in Hong Kong, such 2 pieces of kitchen paper equivalent to 90% protection of surgical face mask
I think it is a great tutorial - I will be making them for my family to use over their surgical masks.

I like the use of two colors or "reversible" use. It helps me remember which side I put next to my face if I take it off.

What a brilliant tutorial, you explain everything so well, showing what you are doing and why in such a way I think anyone, from total beginner to experienced sewer can follow. I think your way of fitting the elastic is pure genius, it's definitely the neatest way I have ever fitted elastic, a tip I will be using for years to come ( I hope). Elastic was hard to find so I went to the Dollar tree and bought packages of elastic headbands. Colorful, soft and sturdy. 12 bands for a buck = 12 masks for adults sizes.
I finally had to order elastic from Amazon...I have some baby head band elactic I'm gonna try and use till it gets here and maybe try the one with bias tape
You can use the Fabric and sew it along the top/bottom of the mask and create fabric ties instead of using elastic. Elastic is getting harder and harder to find right now.

Great easy tutorial, I have watched a lot of videos and yours is very easy to follow. I am an advance sewer but doing these faster is always a bonus. Forget about all the haters, there will always be people who don't agree, no matter what you say. I think it's great. I will just add the wire on the nose then it will be 110%. Thank you!

I appreciate the simplicity of this design. It's perfect for running out to the grocery store. One thing I would suggest is making each side a different pattern. Anything to be able to differentiate the sides. You wouldn't want to accidentally take it off and put the outside in since the outside would be the contaminated side.
I sew a small X on one side with different colour cotton if i have used same fabric for both sides.

@@marilynsmith811 I sew the top of the mask seam. Sung the Pipe cleaner against the seam. fold the front and liner of the mask right sides out. Then feel for the end of the pipe cleaner and stitch around it. Then I fold back and stitch the bottom of the mask closed. turn right sides out. and press. then finish the ends.
It helps to pin the pipe cleaner in place. AFTER FOLDING TO THE RIGHT SIDES,
I used Christmas tree ornament hangers for the nose side...I didn't have pipe cleaner.
Couldn’t find any elastics so I cut open some hair scrunchies and took the elastic from inside...made some for my whole family!
or you can make ties from material..I have had to do that...we are all becoming very resourceful!

I just noticed you responded to negative comments. That is sad, rude and hard to believe your helpful skills were not appreciated by other people who you have a caring heart for. I have not sewn in years and I appreciate the time and thoughtful RUclips video I am blessed to see and use for making a mask that is a much better design compared to the instructions on the CDC website. The raw edges of their sewn mask frayed terribly when washed and my perfectionist attitude did not care for the CDC recommendation. Thank you for enhancing my skills. i used hosiery - knee-highs like pantyhose material/ i cut 1-inch rings makes a perfect stretch elastic bands

I’ve made several per your instructions and they are perfect! One wear, I throw it in the washer and it’s ready to go again. Blessings to you and your family.
Elastic can stretch and wear out if put in the dryer. You can either hang them to dry (preferably in the sun) or, you can make straps that tie in the back, and they will last a lot longer
dryer heat helps to kill germs and viruses
The dryer hasn't ruined the elastic in my bras, sweat pants or shorts. The shorts are 9 yrs old and 1 pair of sweats is 30 yrs. They all wear fine. Just dont use bleach thats the real killer of elastic

I found if you use 4 piece of elastic instead of 2, you can tie them to make them fit any size face.

I chose your tutorial to follow to make face masks. In first trial it only took me 30 minutes to complete a mask whick impressed my husband with my handiwork. Thank you for the clear and concise instructions. The mask fit my husband perfectly.

Interfacing works also for the middle. It is non woven so less likely for a germ to penetrate.

@@linda5067 I wouldn't use felt - it will be too hot to wear. Flannel is thinner.

I've watched so many of these videos, trying to find one that is easy to follow. Thank you for explaining each step and not just typing the words over an odd song. It helped me to understand each step. The tricky part for me is the elastic but your process makes it so much easier to get right!! I appreciate the time you took to teach everyone.
I think you done a great job teaching beginners who have never made anything. There are a lot of young women with children who never had to think about making a mask. Your tutorial will be very helpful for them and it's not complicated...NICE JOB..

I loved your tutorial, the only thing is would be nice to have a pocket to insert a filter. Also it is recommended to do the inside in different fabric so people would know which side goes against your nose as the outside is considered "contaminated" once you've been out and about.
People do not need to be rude. You did a great job showing how to make it
I really thought she used the white flannel for a filter and I do believe people would know that the pleats are on the outside of the mask.
flannel is not an actual filter. But you can put a piece of non-woven fabric inside the mask. I am testing baby wipes(dried out) and personal wipes(dried out). Can be replaced every 60 minutes, and then continue to use the basic mask.
Removable filters are out of stock online now. People are using fusible interfacing or those blue shop towels you can buy in automotive. They make your washable mask 65% more efficient.

Ugh love ur videos from a mom who hasn’t used her machine in 20 years! Easily the best video not to mention love the follow up video on how to clean. Keep it up ! I agree with all of the positive comments. I have poured over videos for personal, washable face masks. This is my favourite. Few have the flannel lining. Love that the lining doesn't go all the way to the edges and create bulk in the pleats. I did add nose wire to the top of some....waiting for feed back from those I have passed them on to. I’m impressed but only thing is making sides one lighter color and one darker side so they know which side was worn on outside where germs were maybe. But I’ve looked at many yours seems like something doable for me a beginner 👌🏻🦋
I used one piece of fabric for each mask. The user new which side was the outside because the filter pocket was on the inside
Don't really need two colors of fabric. One side has the visible stitching to hold the flannel in place, the other does not. No harm using 2 colors if you want, though.
I just write “nose” in marker to the side on the inside where the nose is supposed to go (if I don’t have varying fabrics). Also, everyone remember your nose goes DOWN into the folded pocket. So like, it should slip into the fold. I’ve seen SO MANY ADS FOR MASKS LIKE THIS WHERE THEYRE WEARING IT UPSIDE DOWN IN THE AD LOL. The pleats on the outside should “open” or fan open towards the FLOOR.

It is very doable. So easy and quick. It took me longer to try and find some material to make my husband’s out of.😃
I really like her she good and very easy to understand she’s my favorite.
I was able to use this pattern really easily- novice at sewing. I found sewing the pleats prior to flipping right side out easier and it made the mask snug on the sides. I hope this helps someone

Great video. I'm an experienced sewer/quilter (50 yrs) but I have still been watching different mask videos. I would like to say I really enjoyed yours because you explained it very well so even a beginner can make one and you put in an encouragement which I thought was great and haven't heard anyone else do that. Good for you.
Thank you so much for a really good video. I'm also very picky about my sewing LOL. It takes practice to find the right fit. I inherited a massive amount of craft supplies after my mom passed away. I saved everything. She was a huge quilter. One thing that I've added to my mask is a nose wire using either jewelry or floral wire. I am using quilting bias binding to encase the wire. I stitched a casing at the top of the mask a little larger. Slip in the encased wire, and stitch up the side. It gives it a lot more cushion so it doesn't poke through. I do this before closing up the bottom after turning it right side out, and before putting in the pleats. I've made it about 3 in long after I turn over the ends. It can be made longer depending on preference.

Thank you for your tutorial. Just 2 comments. To add a nose grip sew in a bag wire tie once turned right side out and before final top stitching. Also folds should face down to dissuade droplet ‘traps’. Thanks agaon

After all after you pull out the pleats to fit ober your face most of the “traps” are gone AEB the still pics at the end of the video. This is her design. Yes, without a nose wire. There are plenty out there with one. I know, l’ve watched several. There are those folks who don’t want to mess with a nose wire. During this time of panic and WTH what does it serve to be picky to someone who is trying to help others with a simple, you can do this video. If you can do it better add yours to everyone else’s, but don’t rain on someone’s parade because it wasn’t your version of perfect. Really? We’re all better than that.

If you read the comment properly there is no criticism of either the mask or the author, just a suggestion if somebody wanted to add a nose wire, which, if used, means you cannot just turn the mask the other way. If a nose grip is not wanted , leave it off - easy! The comment regarding the ‘traps’ is in response to another comment from somebody else asking which way the mask should be worn. There are those folks who think it’s ok to add unpleasant comments and in this difficult time what’s wrong with perfect?

I have checked a lot of different ways to make the Face Masks, and yours is definitely the cleanest looking and most simple way to make them.
The only thing I might suggest is when you start to top-stitch around the finished mask two times, start at the corner instead of the place you started when preparing to turn. This will make the stitching along that one side with no back-stitching or threads hanging from starting and stopping. It really will not be noticed in the corner. Thanks again for sharing this mask. I have been sewing for over 65 years, and I am very particular about the finished product.....so I thought I would pass along this suggestion.
This was awesome, I have made a few to go over the N95 masks to extend their use. I was told by a Dr. to put a dart in the middle at the bottom to make it fit snugly.... Only thing it would be seen if you are reversing it. Love how easy you made this...great job
add a piece of wire to form around the nose
I put my dart on the outside and kept the pocket opening on the back (next to the mouth) so they knew which side goes out

I just want you to know that this is my favorite video, and favorite mask design! After watching dozens of videos (I'm completely laid off) and trying two other styles, I came to yours. I like how it covers my whole face from below my eyes to under my chin, it's comfortable and fits well so I will not feel like I want to keep adjusting it which is highly not recommended, and it's simple! I love adding the layer of a liner directly to the mask itself and am using flannel inside mine. You did a great job explaining how to make the mask, and I found your calm manner really helpful right now. I am making these for friends, family, and the community. Thank you!!!
Good job! I chose your concept to make my first washable mask. My white cotton flannel liner on hand was on the thick side as it was a fabric name brand. I used it making a baby quilt as a gift...As I make more masks I will choose a thinner "store brand" flannel liner. Thicker liner was a struggle sewing over the pleats. I used matching self made fabric ties in place of elastic with a pony bead as a slide to open and close making the mask fit and quick and easy removal. Thank you and your kindness for your fellow man is refreshing.

A thicker, tightly woven fabric filters out smaller particles better than looser knit fabrics.
Does the flannel come precut ? I was looking on amazon can you help me where to find flannel please

Very nice, I would add a nose pinch as many of the HCW I have spoken with appreciate it. I can’t imagine selling the masks! I am just doing my part! I did have one lady who left a 6-pack of potty paper for me when I refused payment! Lol. No one should profit off of this situation.
Your directions are much easier than other videos I've watched and you get the same result. Good job explaining and teaching.
Wonderfully simple instructions. I've given away over 200 as of today. When I couldn't find more elastic, I began using round elastic. It is comfortable but needs a channel on each end to pass through so I need to cut the fabric 10" long instead of 9" and cut the elastic longer as well. I do prewash all fabric before cutting to prevent shrinkage. Thanks again!

Note: nurses have asked that you use different fabrics for front and back so that they know which side to put towards their faces, should they take it off and put it back on. You do not want to flip it around during the day!

she never said those were for nurses. all she is doing is showing us how to make one. you do what you need to do as far as fabrics are concerned. there are a lot of videos on this subject and everyone is doing things the same or different so just take the instruction and move on.

The idea to make them two different sides of material seems to be a smart suggestion .....If they go to nurses doctors or who knows who the mask is a mask at this point don’t you think? A nurse can use it when she goes home ... no need to be so jumpy on people ... they are just giving ideas that they are sharing .. gezzz get a grip .. BE KIND !!!'
@@arlene9330 Totally agree...and unfortunately, at this time, many health care providers are having to rely on homemade masks because of the shortage...I am forever trying to improve them so any suggestions are welcome. I as my friends in the medical field to have a clean pocket and dirty pocket. I try to make 4/5 for them so they can change them throughout the day and not reuse them until after they are washed.
This is so much easier! I'm making masks, followed a professional service to make one, they threw in a lot of extra steps. I'm a 52 year old guy who hasn't sewn in 3+ decades

Thank you, for your video. I have watched many videos on how to sew a face mask and the way you explain how to put in the elastic is by far the best I have seen. I am new to sewing and this was the easiest for me. I did not put in the flannel, I just did not want to deal with that part and my mask came out fine. I am glad there are videos like yours out there to help people.

Thank you for your tutorial , I've been making cotton masks for neighbours and friends since the lock down and your pattern is the best ! And so quick, I made 2 tonight with cotton and an old flannelette pillowcase , in about half an hour. The double seam at the end makes them very sturdy and professional looking, so , this is the pattern I'll be using from now on. You're a genius !! Thank you. xx

I have an idea for a replacement for elastic but I haven't tried this yet. What about taking a thicker rubber band, cutting it to make 2 pieces about 7 in each. Encase it in narrow bias tape and then proceed as normal (sew of the side of the tape to make sure the rubberband stays put). If you don't have bias tape make your own. As I said I just thought of this.I have a lot of elastic left from my stash yet, but I thought that could be something to experiment with. It may not hold up to high temperatures in the wash, that could be a problem.
My other idea was to use size 4 cotton yarn, cut to pieces long enough where you can tie it just like your shoelaces behind your ear. The other two ends would be sewn in just like the elastic. You can adjust the tightness. Cotton yarn would hold up well in hot water. I am normally a crocheter, so I keep racking my brain for new ideas on how I can incorporate yarn into this lol.
I tried using covered hair bands, and looped 3 together. It worked out really well, since I could not get elastic.
