Thank you SO much for this life saving tutorial. I'm not an experienced seamstress, I tried it and succeeded, thanks! I have tried one other tutorial (not yours) and it did not work out well. This was was easy to follow, I felt empowered looking at my finished mask. I sewed mines with a needle & thread, no machine and it STILL came out PERFECT! I had a tape measure and a big, bulky level measure stick from my husband's tool kit to work with and this tutorial STILL worked out. The mask is very comfortable and does not touch my mouth and nose AND I can breathe. The measurements for the elastics don't hurt my ears, as well. Every little detail is complete. Also, I learned how to sew DARTS. Thanks! Oh, I have glasses and this mask does not fog up my lenses, even without a metal piece. The dart is enough and very comfortable.

Thank you so much!!!! I have made many styles of masks (some of them yours), and this one is by far the easiest to sew, after you do the math and marking, which is part of the fun for me. Instead of elastic, I cut t-shirt strips (1 1/2 inches wide), stretched them, and then sewed them in so that my husband can tie the mask behind his head to fit his face better. He has breathing problems, and other masks I've made are hard for him to breathe in. This one fits him perfectly (5' 10" and about 190 pounds), and he was very excited about how easy it is to breathe in. I asked him about including a nose wire in the next one, and he says this design doesn't need one. I do think that next time I will zig-zag the edges of the filter pocket so that it won't fray when I wash it. And I love your cat!!!!

Sherri - How long are the t-shirt strips? I want to try that too.

    • @shorency
      @shorency 4 года назад +1

@@janelake3016 I just cut strips from the bottom of an old t-shirt. I measured mine, and each one is 38" long after stretching, and each one goes through one side. I'm sure you could use shorter strips. My husband ties one at the back of his head above the ear and one behind his head below the ear. He says they are very soft and comfortable. There is plenty of room for a bow and some left over. Each of the 4 "straps" ends up being about 18" long.

This was a lot of measuring and constantly double checking that I wasn't sewing the wrong thing...but the final product is amazing. My mom, who has asthma and gets anxiety from wearing a mask, finds this one the most tolerable. She said she actually doesn't mind wearing this style so I'll be making a lot more of them for her! Thank you very much. If I could make a suggestion, getting your camera closer to the fabric when you're tracing lines would be very helpful.

I have tried EVERY pattern for masks. This one is the best of the best. The only modification is I make a half moon scallop with the mid point of 1/2 inch from the nose to the temple before turning right side out so it does not ride up under my eye as I wear glasses. I’ve made so many and people always compliment me and say how they like it.

I also made some; I have a panic disorder and have found other masks to be torture to keep on (I kept them on, but it was really panic-inducing and limited my ability to go places). I found I need to make the mask a big larger for my face, but because these measurements work on larger pieces as well, it was very easy to do. Thank you so much for this wonderful pattern and your clear directions!

THank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful tutorial! Exactly what I've been looking for!
One little tweak I made was to add a 6" x 9" rectangle of fusible interfacing down the center of the fabric rectangle before beginning (place it so that it essentially looks like a big stripe on the fabric, NOT centered in the rectangle like a picture frame). This gives a little extra structure and support to the boxy shape of the mask. NOTE: the fusible interfacing will decrease the breathability of the fabric slightly; however, some studies done early on in the DIY mask making indicated that the interfacing was also a helpful source of filtration (but NOT MEDICAL GRADE).
    Thanks again!

I love this mask! If anyone wanted to make custom sized versions of this mask for themselves or their loved ones. I think my resizing so far is only in the vertical direction, so I may come back with an update for width (which may be important especially for kids masks) though it wasn't needed for me and my partner.
Very easy - the first dimension they use for the initial cloth is 34cm x 24cm. To change the vertical size, just adjust the 34cm up or down. Every 2cm change to the 34cm results in 1cm of change to the final mask (because it is folded in half).
For me, 1cm smaller fits well (my face nose bridge to chin is approximately 11cm), so I would reduce the 34cm to 32cm (-2cm). For my partner 2cm larger fit him well, so I adjusted the 34cm to 38cm (+4cm).
Everything else on the mask for an adult is basically the same! I hope this helps if anyone is interested in adjusting the size for their mask.
*OPTIONAL* another thing you may want to consider is hemming the opening (where you change the filter). In which case, the mask I made for me was still 34cm, but the extra 2cm were used to make the hem.

Love this design. I’ve probably made 15 or so at this point. Two improvements I’ve made are- the strings from the unfinished hem drive me nuts on the inside where the filter pocket opening is. So I tack them down with fusible tape. Second, they don’t hold up very well to washing for me. They tend to lose their shape and I’m not going to iron after every wash. Interfacing seems to help them bounce back and ensure that nothing folds in and touches your mouth. Two thumbs up for this design, though! Thanks for the video!!

I have washed mine at least 20 times now and they hold up great. I don't iron them afterwards either. Delicate cycle, use mesh laundry bag to but them in and dry on high. I fold over and sew the edge of the filter pocket at the very end. That helps a lot with the strings.

I zigzag along the 9 1/2 inch edge before doing the first seam stitching. That takes care of the unraveling threads of the filter pocket opening.

My dad taught me to sew. His mom was a 4-H leader. He could cook and sew. He taught me to do woodworking. And wanted me to know how to change oil and a tire. I’ve changed a tire more times than I’ve kept track of but have my husband writes down the steps for me each time. I don’t have them memorized. My brothers and sons learned to cook and sew too.

Good pattern, however it reminds me a bit of a little piggy nose, but looks so comfy. I have made one a long time ago during the earlier months of Covid. It was good. Thank you. Too bad you don’t have different sizes. I wouldn’t know how much to increase the measurements. Good job on this pattern. Very nice.

I think this pattern could be modified to add a see through vinyl window for lip reading. You would of course loos the filter pocket. Very interesting way to add darts.
