  • Should Christians practice the ancient worship ritual known as "Yoga"?
In our latest series, we are joined by Christine Schwan who has been involved in health & fitness her entire life, having been a certified aerobics instructor for over 30 years, as well as a national and state aerobic and fitness champion. After life changes brought her to the sacred space of single motherhood with 2 small boys, Christine began practicing hot yoga as a way to find more balance in her life, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally & fell in love with the practice of hot yoga then went on to receive her Yoga Teaching certification in the summer of 2008 with Jimmy Barkan and the Barkan Method which included power, Vinyasa and hot yoga, along with being certified in Yoga for Golfers (Level I/II), Yoga Sports Performance, and Functional Movement Science. In addition, she is currently an adjunct professor of Anatomy & Physiology for over 12 years and is certified in NLP, Hypnotherapy and is a Trainer for the Heart Math Institute. It is her extensive knowledge in these areas, as well as kinesiology and the biomechanics of the muscular system, which enables her to bring a depth of knowledge of the human body to her clients.
Christine specializes in corrective alignment, rehabilitation, movement, and improving sports performance for numerous college & professional athletes in the NFL, MLB & NBA.
Is Yoga fundamentally a physical or spiritual practice?
Is there a way to physically practice Yoga without embracing the spiritual elements?

I had a couple Christian mom friends ask me to join a yoga class with them. I told them that I personally felt uncomfortable with yoga in general, and they looked at me like I have 3 heads. This isn't a topic that many Christians are willing to talk about.

I practiced yoga for over 20 years. Depression, darkness and demons dominated my life during that time in my life. What's funny is, I started yoga to help 'center' me. Haha! Wow! The demons loved that I opened that door and invited them in. Thankfully, Jesus never gave up on me. He saved me three years ago and I'm done with all of that life. I'm a new person. No more depression and there is a indescribable joy that I feel. The dark demons still try to bother me, but I'm with our Lord and Savior, so they never get anywhere. God is so good.

The guy with the tattoos is that friend who makes so many good points about something that you're doing wrong, that your only comeback is "Shut up 🤨" because you know he's right.
I really like him though, because he is truly listening and sharing his thoughts as he processes the information. He doesn't come off as a know- it-all, like so many of us are prone to doing. I think the Holy Spirit was helping him to connect the pieces at that moment.

Thank you! I also did a Yoga Teacher Training, but walked out when we did a night of Bhuddist chanting (the icing on the cake). I had originally signed up for the physical aspect but much of the training was lifestyle/spiritual and turned out to contradict the Jesus I knew. This challenged my faith because I yearned to find out why this is all so wrong. After much consideration of a year I decided in addition Christian Yoga is not something I can do knowing what I do from God's word.

24:00 I did yoga teacher training at a yoga ashram with an Indian guru lineage, and the first thing I learned was that the goal of yoga was self-realization/union with Brahman (the ultimate reality/god), liberation from the cycle of reincarnations. I was going there for the physical practice, but it was deeply spiritual. The physical practice was just a tiny part of everything. All the teachings were based in Hindu spiritual believes about god and life. There was a lot of chanting of Hindu mantras and prayers in Sanskrit, and many rituals performed for their gods at the temple…
    I no longer practice yoga.
I think we can enjoy the benefits of stretching and gentle exercise without getting involved in yoga and all that comes with it.

I am a middle aged man. I have been in the sports, recreation, and fitness industry my whole life. If you are just stretching just to keep limber, there is nothing wrong with it. There are similar stretches ALL athletes do to keep limber. There are similar poses that dancers gymnasts, acrobats and contortionists do. Are they actively practicing yoga while hitting those positions? NO!!!! Because yoga is also a meditative practice and a religion. Every true Yoga teacher will tell you this.

    • @elsamartin8165
      @elsamartin8165 3 года назад +2

Right?! I am a massage therapist and I recommend yoga. Why? Because I believe that it takes at least 60 seconds for your muscle fibers to respond and relax. This is why an hour long session is so great because it forces people to take that time to stretch. Being at home there are so many distractions it often just isn't made a priority. I see a HUGE difference between people that excersize, stretch and eat healthy verses people that dont. There are religions that chant while they cook very specific healthy foods. Is it also a sin to follow those same eating regimens even though I am not chanting to the healthy food god? NO!!!

Its important to note that the biblical theology of "peace" is not the same thing as freedom from stress, or from the reality of suffering. Biblical peace is first and foremost, reconciliation with God through the forgiveness of sin in Christ. As Voddie Baucham has said, there are things that we will have to do that will evoke a stress or anxiety feeling, for example confronting someone's sin or heresy, or addressing conflicts in relationships. One can be in the spirit while their flesh wars with the spirit when we do what needs to be done in such circumstances. Christians seem to think that if our flesh responds to stress, then we are not trusting Christ, but if we are obeying Christ and rest in him, we still may not feel at peace until the difficulty or suffering has passed. Eastern religions and new age thought is gnostic in this regard. The whole goal of these thought systems is to notfeel. But that's not at all biblical. The goal of the Christian life is to trust Christ in spite of what we feel.

Looking back I am very glad that one time I went to a Yoga class with conviction and gave it my best, the second I no longer had the strength to keep a position the teacher loudly called me out :“don‘t just give up!“ after sports at school with gym teachers who‘d better have gone to the military and ruined my joy for physical activity for many many years after the school days were over, me finally giving it a go and then having that type of Yoga teacher… plus I always had this resistance towards many practices… I couldn‘t put my finger on it… then 2017 I accidentally met I guy a had seen at a few parties back when I used to go out to underground clubs… we both had gone through quite the change in the meantime, started to chat about consciousness.. he said how he had been practicing TMI meditation (mindfulness = one main aspect: „emptying your mind“) and said he was offering weekly meditations.. so I joined, I meditated regularly.. we started dating.. I had a lot of stress factors coming together and my issues with my nervous system got a lot worse and on top of that I took part in a 40 sadhana a guy offered via zoom where we‘d do all kinds of eastern practices for 1.5 h a day… the people were wonderful and it was such a rewarding experience mainly because it was the first time I stuck with something involving body exercises.. during this time the relationship was on pause.. I was doing great in many ways, felt healthily unattached to him and then started seeing him again.. and the nervous system issues got even worse as well as the twin flamy dynamics (we both suffered quite a hand full of trauma in our childhoods)… I said and dis things where I was kind of blocked in a way and just didn‘t feel like myself… then in July/August a spiritual teacher I follow had her christ awakening and I just felt called to follow her journey and since then I‘ve been reading, watching about God, Jesus Christ, the bible.. started praying and reading the bible (if anyone had told me a few months back that I‘d be doing any of that I would have said „never, no way!“). With all that I habe learned I now understand how the devil had tried to pull me deeper in through the relationship, the sadhana, a couple that do relationship counceling, are deep in the new age and other groups I was in… once I had awakened to this I unfollowed all new age accounts.. I just couldn‘t listen to them anymore.. it all felt so wrong and deceitful… when I told my partner what path I started pursuing he talked about confirmation bias, that he had read the bible (but if you read it with resistance, with wanting to find fault in it, when you believe there is no God it won‘t reveal itself.. he does not believe in anything supernatural) and that it is merely a book written by man… he stuffed me in the same box as his mum, saying we believed the same (no way he could know that after a short conversation and being so closed off towards it all).. then he looked at me and said „I am sad… this is the worst thing that could have happened to you“.
I pray that God will show him the truth (about God and himself), soften his heart and lead him back home…

They reference scripture more in part 2. Yoga is a Hindu practice of yoking oneself to brahmin which is basically opening oneself up to depression. It's a worship practice as each position is meant as a reenactment of the acts of the Hindu gods in order to do them honor. It's clearly idolatry, so Christians shouldn't be doing it. Even by changing the names in a sort of holy yoga way, you're still doing the positions in a way that honors Hindu gods.

2 reasons it's on Cultish: 1, there is a very disturbing trend of dangerous cults operating as yoga studios and they use yoga studios, and implant these ideas I to peoples minds and they don't realize it is happening. And they get people in so deep that by the time they recognize what's happening they are in too deeo- or worse yet, don't even know they are in deep. They use spiritual abuse and manipulation under the guize of yoga, to get people in deep.
      2. Yoga is a spiritual practise (pagan) connected to Eastern religions like Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. "Yoga" means "to yolk," and the meditation and spiritual practise of yoga is to achieve the "path of enlightenment" - where you YOLK yourself to a Hindu god. The poses are a type of posture dedication/worship - to the gods - and the spirituality/worship/meditation is meant to connect you (yolk you) with the Hindu gods.
Moksha is taught in yoga as the ultimate connection to the spiritual transcendence, the goal of every yogi (Mukherjee, 2016).
Yoga is defined as "Hindu theistic philosophy teaching the suppression of all activity of body, mind, and will in order that the self may realize its distinction from them and attain liberation.
*Another philosophical definition is: "a physical, mental and spiritual practice of unification [with a god] and transcendence (Paranipe, 1983).
Many Christians have probably heard of the "kundalini spirit" well there are kundalini cults based around yoga.
Hope that is a bit helpful and now you can see why it is on a Cultush episode. God bless

I have also come to the conclusion that yoga is a sin therefore it cannot bring ANY true peace. It reminds me of the scripture that says “ they say peace peace when there is no peace.”

@@tomasthurman8957 The sexual act, in itself, is exercise, with many physiological benefits.
It's a good analogy. Within the bounds of marriage, having a sexual relationship is very good, and even good for the body, emotions, and is sanctioned by God.
Outside of Holy matrimony, the same act is very evil and detrimental.
To do the "exercise" of yoga is to enter into satan's territory. It is his religion. It is his false system of exercise and meditation. It isn't inspired by God, but expressly inspired by demons, as a part of an idolatrous religious experience. It essentially, at its core, and in its roots, belongs to satan. I can guarantee you that this is the way he views it, and operates through it, as allowed by the spiritual laws, laid down into creation by God. Dabble in satanic things, and reap the devil's harvest. Make NO room for devils, means, that according to spiritual principles laid down in Scripture, we are able to, but instructed not to, open doors to demons in our lives. Yoga is "a room" that plainly belongs to satan. It is spiritually his territory.
When you practice it, know it, or not, you invite demons, with their destructive forces and subtle pervasive lies into your life.
The evil one is very good at giving the false sense of peace, and also other benefits, designed to draw you away from becoming saved, if you aren't already saved. If you are saved, his interests are drawing you out of the close fellowship, protective grace, true spiritual productivity and blessings of following and serving God, in Jesus Holy Name, by the power of The Holy Spirit.
Yes, doing yoga is practicing spiritual adultery, against God.

Stretching, calisthenics, pilates lots of exercises that stretch and challenge the the body are available without being a spiritual practice. The problem is society has been conditioned to think this is or can be just exercise, but that's entirely false. It's a spiritual practice that utilizes the body similar to exercise. But saying it's OK to practice as a Christian is like saying we can take part in a Muslim worship practice or tradition of any other religion and just ignore the spiritual aspect. @DGolden247 3 года назад +3

There are two questions you’ve got to ask yourself first. The first being: Does this activity cause you to sin or struggle with sin? Do you feel guilty doing this, or can you continue doing this in a way that isn’t sinful and maybe even brings glory to God? Then the second question, does this cause those around you to sin or to struggle with their sin?
We can see these questions being asked in 1st Corinthians, specifically chapters 8-10, which talks about the church of Corinth eating food that was sacrificed to idols. Some of the christians during that time had no problem eating the food because they knew logically that all food comes from God, however they were putting a stumbling block in front of their fellow christians who were more sensitive to eating food sacrificed to idols, and leading someone to sin is sinful in itself.
A more modern day version of this issue is whether or not a christian should drink alcohol. There’s nothing inherently wrong with drinking alcohol, in fact wine is often used as a symbolic blessing throughout the scriptures, but when abused can lead to drunkenness, which is considered sinful. Some christians can handle alcohol well and therefore don’t become drunk, other christians handle alcohol badly and therefore have to stay away from it. Neither one has done anything wrong. But what is wrong is offending your fellow christians, either indirectly by drinking alcohol in front of someone who is sensitive to it, or directly by claiming all christians should or shouldn’t drink alcohol therefore imposing your views or morals onto others.
God creates everyone differently, with different tolerances and different interests. I think if you are not yourself offended by your martial arts training then it’s ok to practice it, especially if the people around you aren’t as familiar with the spiritual background as you are. Who knows, may be you have been anointed by God to do something great with this. But if it pricks at your conscience, if it causes either you or others to sin, you got to let it go.

Bottom line, Intent, what are you doing it for, are you understanding of the previous "religious" context that it may have originated in, to involve yourself with what you "perceive" as spirits for purposes of worship of false deities (spirits are all around us, the spiritual world is intertwined with the physical world; inseparable, in the beg God crt. Heaven(s) and Earth, whole caste of spiritual Elohim/beings that are past or perception), just because something originated in a false religion, or among the impious (to Yahweh), doesn't make it condemnation, I'm sure lots of medicines and practices, (even hobbies even foods etc. have been) aren't to be thrown out the window, just cause it "didn't originate" from a Christian/(or ancient Israelite religion). This is false labeling for damnation, spoiling the consciousness of many actual believers, and making them believe that certain innocent (partially due to ignorance of previous contexts ex. yoga, Hinduism) practices, hobbies, exercises, foods, etc. Planting thoughts, that will be nourished, bringing forth a weak consciousness which is gullible to believe whatever the "Pharaisee-ic" ringleaders of Christianity present for us to be confused and confounded, drawing divisions amongst us, like.....Babylon. Something being inherently spiritual is damnable......what about Kain, and his descendants, in Nod, and later expanding making cities and building houses, and making instruments......Ok well Houses are bad, lets not live in them, instruments, demonic, originated from the son of the evil one and whatever type of rebellious mindset he was peddling to his children in they're knowledge. I can agree with not wanting to go to a studio, but if one was to go to a Chinese restaurant or Indian, and not go anymore cause you seen different false god's on the wall? ….And chakras correspond to certain regions of the spine/ CNS, the energy would most likely be electrical energy from the bodies neurotransmitters, freeing up the circuitry, to allow better flow of energy from the brain (root) through the spine (stem) to peripheral nervous system, the limbs (branches). Practices, originating from false deities, sound like we need to better address "Christian Holidays", and our continuous celebration of such...people just want views, if you can't drink Kombucha cause it has a lotus flower that God created on it, that people took, and associated with "sinful" "pagan" symbolism is just disgusting (not kombucha i love that stuff), stain everyone's consciousness and have them anxious about sinning, and serpent energy....don't act like serpents are bad, what about the Seraphim, who are in the presence of the most high saying Qadosh Qadosh Qadosh Yahweh Tzevaot(h).....the spiritual ramifications of concepts of damnation that you created/ing in the hearts of believers.....please don't, "if it's pulling you away from God" then it is damnable but food can do that, doctors can do that (anything putting faith in the creation over the Creator (who is blessed for every Amen) , who has been revealed through his creation so that we are without excuse of his existence) Find peace with God, through his word, his son, Jesus Christ, the only mediator between the invisible uncreated God Yahweh, and the visible creation, so that we can come to oneness with him, and put on the full image of God, just as he did, does, and will forever.

Also, How does the issue of meat in the market place relate to this if someone is doing the poses for the physical aspects. Also is it wrong to do a singular pose if you have not figured out how to get the same stretch if you are struggling with tightness in a particular part of the body?

Incompatible Phrase. Its joining together hindiusm and Christianity. Syncretism. Many churches adopt it because they are trying to appeal to the world by culture, yet dont rely enough on the power and sufficiency of His Word and Spirit. Steven bancarz and doreen virtue are good resources. Basically; to be holy as God is Holy is a high standard. We will never to be sinless in this life, but we must strive to submit ourselves to God with all our being an lives. We need to be separate and not like the world but submitting everything to scripture. When we fail, we turn from sin and trust in Christ's sufficient victory over sin and death. Hope that helps :)

You do realize you can do whatever you want? They’re giving their opinion. On their channel. It’s really not that serious buddy. If you don’t believe in the spirituality behind yoga, and what it truly stands for... then good for you. You don’t have to. You can laugh and think whatever. But people are allowed to be cautious stretching their bodies into poses that are worshipping gods with said poses. As a Christian, yeah that might just be alarming. If you assume spiritual warfare is real and there’s a possibility of allowing demons to enter your space and oppress you, then maybe practicing some ancient Hindu god worship isn’t gonna be up your alley. You do you though. But watching people writhe around on the floor from having a Kundalini awakening is a freaky thing to see. That’s all I’m saying. That whole “serpent” S shape starting at the base of your spine, to awaken all of your chakras, moving its way up to the pineal gland eventually... to become “enlightened”. That’s the point of it. Very mystic and new-agey. Like other people have said, there’s a million other simple ways to stretch that don’t involve bringing a spiritual practice into it.

To be honest, it sounds like you've already made up your mind on the topic. So instead of trying to change your mind, I'll just say what changed mine.
Knowing the origins of yoga, it's poses, and it's intimate connection with Hinduism. That's not legalism, that's objective information. What we do with our bodies is important! That's made very plain in Scripture.
To be a little crass, it's kind of like cheating on God but then going back to Him saying "No no, I was thinking about You the whole time!" Very far from a perfect analogy, but I think it illustrates what I'm trying to say reasonably well.

It is a physical exercise as far as I can tell--people just have just added a bunch of gobble-de-gook rhetoric to certain body poses. I don't think God is against this. At least you haven't pointed out exactly why. It certainly isn't as bad as what is being fed our youth today. What is coming out of Hollywood is really horrible for them. This isn't harmful. It seems to be a paranoid fear that you are experiencing if you fear this. It isn't anti-God. The church comes after you the same way she mentions the yoga teachers do. You need to point out any exact reasons why it is harmful. There is no mention of it in the Bible because I think it was not around when it was written.

@@Weissguys6 I’m a Catholic and Catholics sometimes express a similar view about yoga. That the stretches are inherently diabolical because they’re part of really wacky branch of Hindu practices.
It’s just that idea makes no sense. It’s possible to do secular yoga as exercise insofar as the stretches in yoga are identical to normal stretching exercises born outside of yoga. Yoga practices are like 90% hamstring stretches for instance. Are ballerinas, martial artists, and suburban moms ALL invoking a demon disguised as a Hindu god every time the simply bend over at the hips and stretch their hamstrings?
Sometimes my one year old gets in a downward dog position without any prior knowledge about yoga....do I need to call an exorcist?
The intention an internal disposition is what matters here, not the external practice. Just as much a vocal prayer without intentional centering on the worship of and union with God, in and through Jesus Christ, is an empty gesture, so too is stretching in any way that resembles yoga as a religious practice.
If it were true, what they are saying here, then I’d be accidentally guilty of idolatry every single time I bent over to pick something off of the ground.

Also I just want to say I’m not singling out “white suburban women” because this is a demographic I think poorly of in anyway (I do not think poorly of such people).....only that it’s a demographic that I believe dominates the practice of yoga in the United States.
My wife does yoga apps and yoga off RUclips and she’s a holy woman. A true servant of God. She doesn’t heed the occasionally fluffy religious things they say whiles she’s stretching anymore than I regard the stuff obiwan kenobi or Yoda says when I’m watching Star Wars. I dismiss it because I have my own mind.
I think the reason people might get swept away with yoga’s religious culture is when their own religious culture, and their connection to the church is weak. If you don’t have a prayer life, a religious education, or a deep interpersonal bond to the society of your church, then yoga will sweep you away into its own society....soon you’ll be talking some superficial Hindu, but you’ll also become a vegetarian, maybe start drinking weird teas or juicing, listening to New Age music, become a feminist, start shopping at Whole Foods, and you’ll get a neck tattoo for some reason.
With religion we’re looking for social unity and belonging. So if your conventional religion is weak then yoga culture , or Star Wars super fandom, will be right there waiting to snatch you away as an alternative

When God said not to worship Him as the nations worship their gods, He very explicitly gave reason that they did abominable things in their worship like infanticide. God never said stretching or taking care of your health was abominable. We need to refer back to what Paul said about eating meat offered to idols. It’s basically a “don’t ask/don’t tell” kind of policy. Don’t ask them if their meat was offered to an idol, but if they tell you that it was you shouldn’t partake of it. You are going against Paul’s judgment in this matter and adding restrictions where God himself did not. By your own rationale, because there are pagans that focus on their breathing during meditation, you should stop breathing altogether.
