A display upscaling monitor is your friend, desktop APUs and old laptops displaying games with forced display scaling can up fps massively over native with a clear picture and no input lag.
You have to set the monitor mode at the display driver level using the classic dialog by clicking advanced through the Win8 style setting pages.

Speaking of CRT i still use 1600x1200 Sony Trinitron CRTs for my side monitors and found it funny when he said to pause and move the mouse around because there was no ghosting lol
Well, we're now i days where if you buy two 27" monitors from two different brands, they are different size in reality... My Aorus AD27QD is stated to be 27", but it's 27,7" irl and my old secondary DELL U2711 is actually 27,2"... I thought I was going crazy when they wouldn't align perfectly LOL

Under line is the same. You are "overclock" the IC to achieve both.

Over scan is over rated.
Overdrive is increasing the Voltage to speed up switching times - aka Overclocking in some way.
Also it has some downsides, aka Overshoot or inverse Ghosting if you do it to harsh, also many monitors need to use multiple modes, for various refresh ranges, as using a single mode could lead to overshoot in lower Hertz Ranges if you go to high or so...
also OC from 165 to 180Hz for example is no real OC if its already available in the monitor menu, as it means the monitor is made to use that refresh by default, just delivers it as a "feature" where none is...

probably due to lack of supply. HE went looking and realized buying a decent high refresh rate monitor is like buying decent GPU's, they are few far between and overpriced to hell. I bought the AOC 24g2 1080p 144hz gaming panel from microcenter about 8 months ago for 170$. Its not $300+ all over..... oh and by the way, you cant blame this on crypto as monitors dont effect mining profits...

I had the same setup (55" 1080p 3D), until my tv bit the dust, then I got a new 4k tv and the video card doesn't support it natively so I have to run dual monitors to change the aspect ratio to make it viewable (1440).
I will be frank. I'm still working on cleaning up and getting my setup looking presentable before I share it eventually with you guys. I also have two mismatched 4k monitors which I'm sure will mess with Jay allot but it works to allow clearance for certain parts of the setup.
Went ultrawide for the first time with my new build. Using an MSI optix 34 inch and really enjoying it. I actually chose a VA panel to get the nice contrast ratio and avoid potential ips light bleed issues since I'm usually gaming in the dark. I don't think I can really notice any problems with color reproduction but I tend to notice contrast more than colors.
Watching this and your semi-recent PSU video has reminded me of learning music theory. Simply knowing the rules and facts is all well and good, but knowing the WHY behind said rules and facts is infinitely more interesting.

There's also a thing called Fast Sync in 'nvidia control panel', which also works great as well. In lots of new games, you don't need to be pushing for 60fps for Fast Sync to work, if tearing occurs, you just have to use Vsync, mostly in story games, where you wouldn't mind losing the performance.
So glad you did a video on this! I always look for good videos on RUclips on how to choose monitors and what to look for and literally no one talks about it (except for maybe Linus a handful of times per year). Well done!
That is a GREAT, simple video to learn all the basics and most important things about monitors, by far the best video on the area i've ever seen that is able to summarize everything in a fast but effective way. good job guys! It would be great to make another one about panel techs including stuff like oled, mini led, micro led, quantum dot shtuff and, etc.
I've always recommended 1080p up to 24", 1440p for 27", and anything bigger for 4K. That's just me though but I feel the pixel density is the best for that size.
I've got Gigabyte's 27" 1440 170hz with KVM.

KVM is type C only on "2nd PC". works best on cellphone as controller for driving game...
About the same as what I recommend. I use 3 x 28” 2160p panels on my desk. Prefer to use the 3 panels rather than a single ultrawide due to the 1440 horizontal lines (top to bottom) instead of the 2160 on the multiple panels. If the panels have tiny bezels then it is almost a single continuous display. Cheaper as well to buy 3 x 4K 28” monitors than a 43” ultrawide! I also have a pair of 24” 1080p that I am seriously considering putting above the 3 x 28” panels, but got to think of a use first as they are DVI or VGA inputs & the only card I have that has those inputs is in my Plex/File Server. Only way I can think of using them is to connect them up to a pair of DVI - HDMI converters & then running them off the iGPU on my i7 8700 as the RTX2070 is running the other 3 panels (still room for one more but would rather have both the 24” panels running off same sources so a splitter would be needed as well…..) decisions decisions decisions…..
What I felt before when using 1080p for 27", is that when I play videos in fullscreen, things look blurry
TBH you want a 27-36inch 4k monitor regular or ultrawide, I always said you want 1440p 22-34 reg to ultrawide, and 1080p anything lower than 20inches .
You can never have enough pixel density as long as the GPU will reliably push it.
If you sit reasonably close, like at a desk, yep that's about on the money.

I remember doing so with a 15" CRT. It was a very good screen for its time, 1024 x 768 Trinitron tube.

I used to have a dual monitor setup with an IPS and TN panel side by side and the TN looked like it had a layer of dust on it when comparing the images.
Definitely need a separate video explaining using/setting up freesync/gsync/adaptive sync, and tips for smoothing out your game experience between a card and monitor!

there are so many guides out there
Overclocking a monitor is forcing the refresh to be higher, ie taking a 60 hz monitor to 75hz or 144 hz to 165 hz. Overdrive is response time compensation. There are plenty of monitors where overdrive will stop ghosting but if you push it too high, like Jay said, you can get inverse ghosting. There are a lot of panels that have variable overdrive that put you in a sweet spot across the entire refresh rate. Overdrive can be your friend.
Tldr panel overclocking isn't overdrive and overdrive isn't panel overclocking
The problem with overclocking is if you have vrr, generally the max refresh of the monitor is where vrr caps out. So you get a slightly higher refresh but will jump out of your vrr range making the overclock kind of pointless.

vrr only matters if your framerate is within your refresh rate anyways. If you're playing a competitive shooter or other eSports game u should disable gsync/freesync/etc and run at the highest framerate possible. For example I run Overwatch at 400fps
@@soren4904 Running a game at more FPS than your display can show will only minimize input lag while introducing horrible tearing (though if you are a competitive player then I guess you just tolerate it). To be frank anything past 240 fps is probably overkill in terms of input lag as your reaction speed is not even close to take advantage of it, if you think you play better at those fps then it's just placebo effect.

I was riding an older 22" LG for far too long, I finally did some looking around and got an Asus Swift PG278QR. It's a 1440P 1ms/165hz gaming panel with a blue filter and an extremely adjustable stand. I love it.

@@RobBCactive Exactly. I did an emergency build last year (computer died). Over the course of a year, I've put about $3000 into my total setup, but spread out in more manageable chunks. If you don't have to absolutely replace something, you can plan those upgrades gradually, as long as the architecture supports it. Which is to say, upgrade the base components first, then prioritize the rest based on actual need for performance. Do you need to upgrade that GPU now, or can you get by with what you have already and put that money to other upgrades? When you do staged upgrades like that, you can budget that build better.
@@rcslyman8929 specifically re-using monitors, GPU and some disk drives, lets you buy better NVME SSD later.
The mobo & case are IMO the key parts, living with a cheap APU with dual channel dual rank RAM is tolerable.
In my case I used an interim APU waiting to buy a GPU, but I found a good upscaling monitor before GPU sale prices permitted less compromise.
My start point was especially poor because I had had to buy a gaming laptop due to travel requirements, so my desktop parts had been neglected.
Now I just need an R5 5600 G or better to finish off what I began in October.
@@RobBCactive Yep. While peripherals are just as important to the whole setup, they aren't necessary upgrades since they are portable to any system. As long as they work, hey, put that money to a performance increase on the base system.
When I went through my emergency LCR, I had limited funds. So I had to be careful how I spent money. Didn't help that my DOA system was DDR3, so I had a massive change in architecture. I opted for a 2700X CPU since they were on sale, half off. Motherboard was also on sale, but was an X570 for a clear upgrade path. Limited myself to 16GB for RAM, so I could get the higher 3600 CL16 kit. And since my case had some defects, I picked up a new one, but went with a cheap $65 case. It got me back up and running, but had a clear upgrade path.
Next month, I was able to replace my old RX 480 with an RX 5700 that was open box. Also added another matching 16GB kit.
Later on, I got an R5 5600X to get the major upgrade from Zen+ to Zen3, and picked up an NVME 4.0 to upgrade my main drive (was using an EVO 850 prior).
Between those two upgrades, my original upgrade path was to a Zen2 CPU, but the Zen3s got announced. So while I was waiting on those, I diverted the upgrade budget to a new monitor instead. My 4K panel was 15ms at 60hz, basically a really cheap 4K panel, but I didn't have $1000 to spend, so I "downgraded" to a 32" 2K panel with 1ms at 165hz for ~$400. Massive improvement over the 4K.
Most recently, I did a full rebuild when I upgraded the case to an 011 Dynamic, exchanging the Wraith Prism for a 360 Galahad AIO and throwing in 3 arrays of 3x SL120 Unifans (one array replaced the stock fans for the AIO). And a couple Strimers as well. The AIO was obviously for improved cooling, but this upgrade was because, hey, I have never had a system that looks awesome and I wanted this one to look awesome, dammit. Eventually I may hardline it, but I rather like the Galahad.
My last upgrade is a GPU, but with prices the way they are... my 5700 is doing fine, and it is hard to justify the excessive cost. I may wait until the 7000 series. If I do upgrade something else, I might go with a better mobo to replace the MSI X570-A Pro I had gotten as emergency. The only other thing I would consider is getting RAM with a better CL rating. If I do that upgrade, I'll have the parts to rebuild a secondary system. Which is kind of nice to have. Another nice thing of a slow upgrade process.
@@rcslyman8929 I went for X570 too, not NVME PCI 4.O though, the extra cost wasn't worth the gain.
The Fractal case makes working on the system a pleasure, not moving the mobo and just swapping out the CPU seems better to me, than bothering with cheap cases.
It let me fit a triple fan 6700xt that's 320mm on sale, with a move of radiator to vent upwards through mesh top.
You must have had a major failure to have to replace the monitor too! I have my net & main box on a quality UPS with surge protection, an old investment.
Sounds like you're set till AM4, once DDR5 is mainstream you can have a real upgrade then, patience is a virtue. I bought RAM on offer but 4 sticks, I figured the unified cache on the 5600x will serve, but if there's larger cache 5900 or a new 56XX with 3D stack at sane prices this year they'll temp me.
I bought the APU 3400G as an interim stop gap and I couldn't decide between 5700xt and a cheaper 5600xt, with Zen3 and RDNA2 announced I decided I could wait for prices to fall on the new hotness, as I didn't expect to upgrade CPU/Movo for 5 years or more after.
Until recently I mostly used an old gaming laptop, with blue vertical lines on the display and then the keyboard lost keys. It stopped booting, so I was forced to finish a little sooner than expected, though I knew the i7/nv laptop was on its last legs.
If you have OCD refresh rate is a one way upgrade. You should plan on buying a monitor for every workstation you have to use. One does not go back to 60hz.

In 2015, I had a 1080p Dell TN panel monitor and it didn't bother me as much.
In 2021, I did a complete refresh of my pc and that's when I remembered Jay highlighting this very point of 'Get a good monitor because that is what you will be looking at the most'. So I bought myself 4k IPS LG panel which is still 60hrtz but I need it for editing and not gaming.
I now know what he meant. The sharpness, the accuracy in colours, it really does baffle me.

I'm running a 24" Benq IPS panel that I bought new about 2 years ago for $99. Fantastic monitor, fast refresh rate. I'm a happy camper!
VA panels are good for watching videos and movies, working with text due to high contrast.in games the response time can be a bit slow, but that can be worked around by adjusting gamma ingame for the blacks to be slightly grayer, which improves that. also DC dimming vs PWM dimming is important to not cause eye strain.

I used to have two cheap office AOC 1080p 60Hz 8ms GtG monitors and I finally built my pc and have been watching your videos for about a year and they have helped tremendously so first I thank you for that. Anyway a week before this video I actually went and bought the view sonic elite XG270Q since you use the same one (or the G sku) and I absolutely love it! This video hits the key points that I looked after when buying. Also the notice in performance is incredibly noticeable.

Whatever panel you choose just make sure it's IPS or greater. Once you go IPS, you never go back. The same could be said for anything over 1080p. Personally anything with at least a 95% color accuracy, 95hz or better, IPS and at least 2k is gonna be a game changer. Hardware Unboxed is the channel to double check with before purchasing anything. Also, don't think you have to spend big bucks to get a great panel. Companies like BenQ and Viotek (not sure I spelt that right) have amazing panels for the money without breaking the bank.
Always used IPS, the visual quality is unmatched, nice to see the prices and refresh/response times improve now.

I had it but had a bad panel (brightness flickering which is a problem with VA panels.)
Exchanged it for another one and bought the Dell 2721DGF IPS. I compared the 2 side by side and the pixel density with the 27 inch produced a much more crisp image.
Both great but I wanted the sharpness that the 27 inch IPS provided.
I literally Just came home with 3 new monitors for my sim racing rig, after months of research and going back and forward. You couldn't have posted this 1 day earlier Jay :)
I love my ViewSonic XG2760 TN panel, doesn't have the crappy viewing angle and has very good color. Took me a while to get it setup properly but very happy with it.

I don't think Jays will have very good insight tho since he himself doesn't do monitor reviews, so he doesn't have a large enough sample size to draw any conclusions

Great video. When I bought my new PC, I included a new monitor in the budget. People seem to get all wrapped up in their CPU and GPU. A decent monitor is easily going to be the third most expensive part of a PC. The silliest thing is when they spend thousands on the PC and balk at spending another $100-$150 for a decent keyboard and a mouse that fits their hand and grip style. If your input devices suck, you might as well buy a Walmart special PC.

Thank you for these videos. I am learning about pc's. Very informative and clear to understand. I am planning my first gaming pc build.
I think this is one of the first times in modern PC gaming where an average end user (boutique prebuilt or high end pre-built, or perhaps first midrange build of their own) is legitimately gated by monitor quality. The monitor bottleneck didn't really exist when games were rarely supporting 1440p resolutions and when getting more than 60fps at 1440p would have been a real struggle with the quality of hardware and the demands of games. Game demand has been plateauing while hardware capabilities have gone up: hence, people just don't think about their monitors being a bottleneck, but had the bottleneck sneak up on them and now they don't even know about it because it's never been an issue in the past.

This was me. To be fair I'm still using an i7 3820, 16gb ram, 1070 GTX system. I only last year went from a 2TB Seagate HDD to a WD Sata SSD (this mobo doesn't support NVME obv). I was using a 23" Dell 1080p/60hz monitor because ya know "1080p/60 is good enuff bro!!". Well I said screw it, I'm gonna build a new system but first I want to get a monitor and ended up with a 27" LGGL850 which is 1440p/165hz, supports VRR (Gsync or Freesync). Oh my god. I have no idea how the hell I stuck with that Dell monitor for so long. What's funny is after this upgrade I said I need to go build a new PC and have on order a 5800x, x570 Gigabyte Aorus Elite, 1tb Gen 4 Gigabyte Aorus SSD, 3070 TI, Lian Li O11 Dyanmic, 750w Thermaltake PSU, 360mm Phantek Glacier One AIO, 32gb 3200hz Adata XPG Z1 Memory. Like my older system I will ride this system out for at least 5-7 years so I went with the 5800x over the 5600x just because I feel like those 2 extra cores will last me a little bit longer. It's funny though because a $400 monitor turned in a $2000+ PC build.

FINALLY!!!! I've been mentioning this for the past 3 years or so. I can game with my gtx 1080 on a 60hz display and no matter the frame rate I get, when I switch to my 160hz display I ALWAYS get an increase in frame rate and performance.

@@jonasluks1438 My HP LP2475 monitor is still holding on and I bought that one in 2005. It was an expensive purchase but considering it still works today the quality shows..
@@2Fast4Mellow I used to run 1x30” and 2x24” 16:10 DELL screens (10+ years old) until about two months ago when I got 3070 and decided to go for 1440p@165Hz. So yeah, they hold well but it’s surprising to mention this when discussing new screens (although Jay doesn’t specifically discuss new purchases).

I got an IPS panel in December and the viewing angle compared to my on TN display is pure magic. It's a real "what kind of wizardry is this" moment.
OLED is still pricey in most cases, but it's worth mentioning.

I run a Samsung G7 Odyssey 32" and I love it. Flickering was a problem but they fixed it in firmware. My secondary is an ASUS PG279Q turned vertically.

Same here. VA's actually have the darkest darks and the highest contrast ratio of any LCD. They are also quite well suited for direct back-light, as they do not bleed as easily as IPS. However, there aren't many high ref.rate VAs, and I believe that is why Jay did not spend time on them. They are great for video consumption, and RPGs, but not for competitive gaming.
A decent VA looks sweet. My brother's is 165hz, not too bad at all.
@@valchanovgeorgi They do exist though. The Samsung Odyssey G7 is a 240hz 1440p VA.
VA is Panel King. IPS has really bad Contrast and way too high black levels

@Mixologist Does Jay do monitor reviews? No. Tim does, and I'd argue they're some of the best in the business. This was a good intro, but Tim does in depth reviews for specific panels and their strengths and flaws. This information is crucial when making a purchase decision for an item "in your setup that you shouldn't overlook."

Thank you Jay, I was lucky enough to get one of the 3090 last year, but was still using a 60HZ 1080p old monitor. Just bought a new 1440p 180Hz monitor last week, and realize what I had been missing.

"p" after resolution stand for progrssive and "i" is interlaced in many instances you can't find interlaced mode this days but you should be aware of what that mean and what is the difference
You also can’t get newer devices that support 1080i, it’s a bummer
@@battlegraye Yes, but you can still have movies that are interlaced or some emulators for old games and you should be aware of this for better understanding why something look bad on your new monitor.
@@ijotka this is true. My issue is that I’ve got a 1080i panel in my office and no new hardware will support 1080i, so the most I can get is 720p. It was fine back when I had a ps3 lol
Majority of my friends with high refresh rate monitors had them capped at 60 Hz anyway. But it was nice to see their reaction to the really smooth experience when I fixed it for them.

My cable management philosophy is this : If it's plugged in both ends and is not sticking into a fan blade then the cable is good to go!

When explaining how a larger monitor resolution stresses the GPU more, and given that this explains _all_ the basics about displays, you should have noted that you can still run a game at a lower resolution than the display's, so it's completely ok to get a higher-resolution display even if your GPU isn't powerful enough to run the latest games at full resolution. You can choose a smaller resolution in the game, and it will be scaled up to the size of the display, but will be as efficient as if your display had been of that smaller resolution.

@@bronzehd6212 that's assuming you have a GPU capable of doing DLSS, which IF YOU DO, then you wouldn't have the issue WarpRulez explained in the first place
If you have to go for non-native resolution, you should choose resolution with the same aspect ratio as the monitor's native - like 16/9, 16/10... Otherwise the result will be very bad. While if you maintain the aspect ratio result may not be too bad :)
i actually have a 2k 165hz 27 inch omen monitor powered by a 2080 rtx rog strix with a i9900k oc cpu and i max fps with mostly high graphics pretty much every game.

Very nice Jay! The only thing I did not see mentioned was 10bit versus 8bit +FRC and I only recently learned about that.
10:39 HOLD UP jay you are going to confuse people because they are going to think their monitor sucks after they see like 8+ cursors trailing as they do that. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT the monitor has slow response time. The reason you see 8+ cursors regardless of the quality and refresh rate of your monitor is due to a phenomenon in human perception called “persistence of vision”. If you take a slow mo camera (phone works) you will see that most monitors will not show more than 1 or 2 cursors at a time. Perceived motion blur in monitors is created by our eyes, NOT by the monitor.
@@bronzehd6212 yeah, exactly. Your phone doesn't see it because the shutter speed is short enough to capture a single refresh and not blur multiple frames together like our eyes do.
@@bronzehd6212 and yeah if the monitor was actually bad then you would see exponentially more cursors. however even the worst monitors will barely show 2 cursors show on the screen. In order for a 60hz to show 2 full cursors simultaneously the response time will need to be over 1/60th of a second or 16.7miliseconds
27" 170hz 1440P Gigabyte IPS monitor. Looks great to me, but it is my first 1440p monitor.
@Truth Seeker sure thing. Thanks for the advice. Just wondering what type of FPS I would expect out of a 4k or even 8k monitor that you suggest? I am on 1440p because it will achieve a good mix of frames and pixels. But sure please go ahead and suggest some monitors I should get to stop being a caveman. Smh
@Truth Seeker ok this sounds great. But for the games I play i think it is fine. I have tried a 4k monitor, and sure it looks nice and clean but the fps drop is not worth it. I will wait until both 4k monitors with 200hz are cheaper and I can get a better gpu for an acceptable price. 1440p is fine for me playing the games I play.

I just upgraded my main desk monitor a few days ago, from a 32" 4k display (Dell U3214Q) to a 43" 4k display (Dell U4320Q) since my eyes aren't getting any younger. I bought the 32" monitor about seven years ago as an early adopter and I thought it was the greatest thing I had ever done to upgrade my computing experience. I feel exactly the same now I've moved to this 43" display.
I've been running a Dell Alienware AW3418DW for about 2 years. Love it. Only thing I don't really like is the placement of the USB ports as that is the same spot my center speaker sits under the monitor. That's minor though, everything else about this monitor was worth every penny to me.
