I think Virginie did a great job and is trying her best to handle everything without Karl. Yes, everything may not look the same and thats because Virginie is not Karl, she's her own person, so that means she's making her own designs.
it's not fair to keep putting pressure on virginie to be exactly like karl, the brand will never be able to move ahead if it is constantly nostalgic for when he was working there. this is her brand now and she can do with it what she wants. it's also not fair to expect her to constantly create wild and sometimes unrealistic fantasies for womenswear, if she wants to create more minimal, more practical wear for women then it should be supported. frankly i felt this was the most 'chanel' it's been since she took over, she is focusing on it being about easy wearable clothes, not a fantasy or piece of theatre. what karl did for chanel was what karl wanted to do for chanel, he didn't make rules for virginie to follow, now he's gone she is free to take the brand wherever she wants and if that involves minimal sets (which are far more ecological) and a more diverse wardrobe for customers then that is what she will do
I TOTALLY AGREE!! Virginie is herself and Karl was himself, we can’t expect the same CHANEL now that he’s gone. I absolutely love this collection, I’m not a woman but these clothes are far more wearable, in my opinion, than most of what Karl created. Like Kristen Stewart said in one of her interviews for the CHANEL SS20 Campaign, “these clothes are meant for you to move in them, and not to just sit and look pretty.”

Karl is Karl and Virginie is Virginie. It would be pathetic if she would even try to barely imitate Karl: she probably wouldn't be able even if she wanted. So she should just keep on doing what she's trying to do, hoping that sooner or later she reaches a certain decent level. Best wishes.
Bunch of hipocries. I remember when Karl was alive the section comments were all about "Oh Karl is doing the same every collection" "Oh Karl is so old nothing new" And now, critizicing Virginie and saying "Oh i miss karl" blah blah..
Right?!! As in politics and life, so in fashion - there is a history...........and everyone (well, those who choose to) all too soon forget it or don't know anything about it! When Karl Lagerfeld first began designing for CHANEL way back in 1983 there was an entire camp of people that were disgusted by what he was doing with the label. They never got over the fact he was the one designing under the name of their beloved Gabrielle Chanel. And as is always the case, history repeats itself.......and this is exactly what I am witnessing now with Virginie. There will be an entirely new camp of folks who will never be able to get over the fact Karl is gone. BUT, without a doubt, Virginie will become the next brilliant mind to contribute to the CHANEL legacy. Karl did JUST what was needed to push CHANEL into a new age and make it relevant again - perfect for the times. And Virginie is doing JUST what is needed for the label now - PERFECT for its times.

@@erik3579 You're wrong with history, my dear. When chanel died, a Spanish assistant took charge of the firm. He took chanel to the ground as Chanel it today. Karl saved chanel's house in 1983. Virginie will never be like Karl.

I am fully aware of the span of time and who was at the helm between the death of Coco Chanel in 1971 and the hiring of Karl for his first collection in 1983. I never said Karl Lagerfeld "took Chanel to the ground." I said he had his fair share of critics......just as Virginie does now. The only difference is social media amplifies said critics. Karl most certainly did save CHANEL from disappearing, and all of us who are admirers of CHANEL thank him for that. And you are right again, Virginie Viard is not Karl. She isn't trying to be nor is anyone asking her to (it's impossible). As someone who knows the professional history of Coco and Karl well (and blown away by their work!) I am also equally impressed by Virginie. In the frivolous world of fashion, though, this is all a matter of opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I won't judge you for thinking Virginie will take down CHANEL, and I hope you wouldn't judge me for thinking she will take it successfully into the future.

Agree. My immediate thinking is that this collection would sell very well, but it is all-over-the-place and clearly without any central and respectable concept. A house like Chanel would dwindle in no time to mediocrity in this direction...

It's up to us to adjust to our times and the minute you think the past was better, your present is second-hand and you, yourself, become vintage. It's OK for clothes, not that great for people." So for the haters out there, while some of us will end up moving into the future, some of you will end up hanging out in a Goodwill store somewhere.

I agree with some of the comments here. From Chanel I always expect the best BUT this collection is quite BLAH. It doesn't have anything in common between all the looks. It had classic ones and also some 1990's mood, showed a lot without saying anything in particular.
María Buttironi I agree. Also, I think the designer is trying to hard. You can tell which pieces express her style and which were the “ok, I need something else to fill the gaps in the collection” pieces.
the jockey cap and the model galloping like a horse was so off. Karl if he incorporated the jockey look or equestrian would have had all models with the cap not just one- just saying

i'm so tired of all these weird unflattering proportion. those boots are hideous. some of the long coats were nice but the pants...i just can't with them.

Chanel is never only about how it looks like from the view of a camara or a RUclips screen. You can't see the embroideries, the different threads of the tweed and the buttons from such distance. I think the fast-fashion has poisoned the public so much that anything that's not a huge statement looks boring now.
No wonder last year that shirt from the beach show that had "CHA-NEL" in the chest pockets that worth about 2000 bucks was a huge success, yet don't forget the double one-on-each-side bag of that show could possibly be the biggest failure of the history of CHANEL.
I agree, but I want to criticize them at the same time. Fashion houses like Chanel clearly show good-quality fashion, but at the same time they also create trendy styles and inspire many.

I love how some of the girls got to walk together and chat with one another. From a watchers point of view it made the collection feel more cozy somehow and feel more close to the collection.

It has gone from being one of the top fashion houses known for the top fashion or elegance and class to youth, “trendy”wearability . Not gonna lie a lot of the clothes were bland, for haute couture. But yes it is very wearable. Does that mean good?? It’s not a collection to be swoon over for me. But to each their own.

The collection is fresh, feminine and dynamic. The two-piece suits, the little black dresses, the bulky jackets, the skirts, ughh so chic.
What's so fresh about it? There's hardly anything new here. My mom has the same Chanel jackets but circa 94. And those boots were hideous. It felt really blah to me

no it isn't- they were no congruent theme- just odd ball pieces- the accessories and boots were good tho got to give her credit for that but nothing out of this world that has not been seen. KInd o like what Miranda Priestly said, "leaves for fall brilliant." Nothing ingenious about any of this

SoSofaragon probably the end of the bereavement. Everything was very dark and black at the beginning with big crosses and then, step by step it has become lighter, although still black, and totally white at the end, as a rebirth or at least like the blank page of a new book to come.
Might be inspired by the church. (ex: 1:52) There's lots of jewelry inspired by the church (ex; 3:18 )

It's about Romanticism and horses. All the clothes were reminiscent of Edwardian Era. The collection inspired by certain things that Gabrielle loved, as well as an image of Karl ;)
The Grand Palais themes since Karl left have been very uninspiring ... but clearly see Virginie Viard in this collection completely ... don’t care for the pants at all ... they remind me of motorcycle chaps .... I see the maroon/black theme of the accessories so that is a nice nod to Mademoiselle Coco ... and I see the return to major chunky costume jewelry pieces ... Don’t care much for anything I see. I can’t afford Chanel RTW but I do purchase and accessory or two each season and while I love the boots ... I’ve seen them before.

The amount of white models compared to the amount of colored models is embarrassing. Chanel do better. Three black models and two Asians isn’t enough! So many talented Colored models aren’t recognized enough not hating but please be more diverse !

All the outfits are surprisingly cute. You can see girls wearing these on the streets, it's that cute.
Chanel impressed me every season, even when I think I’m expecting the most wild or calm clothing style and design ever. They did an excellent job this season. After all, winter is my favorite of them all.

All the pieces were BEAUTIFUL and the outfits were really well arranged. Also the hair and make up? Super lovely and chic, yet simple. Absolutely LOVED everything. Chanel never disappoints.

The A/W 2019 collection was soooo much better than this one, practically loved everything in that show but this one is just meh...
Gorgeous show and bravo Virginie! but please do rethink of releasing an edited version of the show like you used to and not just a "best of" like everyone else does because nobody else edits a show like you do and it really does make a difference

There were some nice pieces, but overall it looks outdated, very 80s but in a bad way.
Why does Gigi get such a long shot and the others not?
Last decades are in right now and have been for a couple of seasons, that's why you see 80 influence. However, I do agree with you about Gigi, she shouldn't even be there, really... but they do it for publicity
Oh, forgot to mention that the clothes are reminiscent of Romanticism more than the 80s. The 80s play a smaller part, also taking inspiration from Karl's photo at the time :)

At the first part I was intrigued by the play of fabrics and colors and the cut was seemingly perfect but over the course of the show my expectations have decreased exponentially. The show became dull and random that I can't even identify if it's Chanel anymore. I can tell the designer wanted to incorporate that sort of "gemstone" accessories and I have to say it's tacky but I'm also expecting to see this on the next collection. Nice try though.
Philaw Sophyy I agree. I liked where she was going initially, but I got lost along the way. Also, the set felt random. Like, let’s make it look wintery, but there was no real connection to the clothes. There was no real theme at all.
