In the 1986 version of G.I. Joe, the Marvel comic original edition, he wasn't cruel to his fellow Cobra soldiers. He was more of a visionary and dedicated leader to them. That's what pissed Cobra Commander off. The first 2 or 3rd issue, he battled against the Joes in Springfield. One of Cobra soldiers went down in front of him. He picked him up and said "we don't leave our brothers to die nor leave them like animals on the field" Something to that extent. He was for the welfare of the soldiers. Down the line that led to the 1st Cobra Civil War. The cartoon put him in a very opposite light. I usually go with the character personalization based on original gospel canon, which is Marvels.
thank you, i am trying to learn more about this character. this helps because i noticed a conflict of information. But this puts it into better perspective.
Although Dr Mindbender played on using Sgt Slaughter’s DNA as a substitute 4 Sun Tzu Sgt Slaughter prevented his DNA from being incorporated into Serpentor’s genetic material
@@crimsonmoonrise9785He returned - because kids were crying coming out of the theater when he died the first time. I thought it was really flip-floppy of the writers to bring him back. I was content with his Klingon warrior’s death.
I've always thought that instead of Sgt Slaughter, it would have made more sense if either Duke or General Joseph Colton were the heroes' clone source for Serpentor.
It was the pro-wrestling being popular among those who purchased GI Joe toys, said pro-wrestler toys, and the fact that they watched both, with most who watched both favoring Sgt. Slaughter. Cartoons at the time were mostly really long toy commercials based upon existing potential markets, not the other way around. Adults of the 80s were uber-capitalist soulless scum who were beloved for their masks. Deadpool would be a villain back then because he's a perfect 80s character... but honest about it, no matter how often he played the hero.
@@That80sGuy1972 The executives weren't completely successful, though. A year after Sgt Slaughter, they tried to do an action figure of William "Refrigerator" Perry. It didn't work so well. Sgt Slaughter was gold, but The Fridge went cold. (Though to be honest, it was probably because Slaughter was featured in the GI Joe cartoon and I don't think Perry ever made an appearance. Though a character called "Sgt Slaughter" does lend himself better to a military toyline than a football player called "Refrigerator".)
@@AustynSN I wasn't aware that they tried that with Fridge. I agree about Slaughter, he's a better fit. Fridge was just a huge, strong, obese football player who was excellent at "plowing" (resisting being tackled). My dad watched a lot of football. When I heard him laughing like a kid, I ran into the living room to see what he saw on TV. It was usually Fridge just waddling the final steps to the 1st down with a cluster of players from the other team clinging to him, trying to pull him down. I can also see why Fridge didn't work out. The Joe's already had a very strong black guy who could do something like that... and he wasn't super-husky, he was more hulking. The Joe's don't like having similar people on the same side. If memory serves, wasn't he "Refrigerator Perry" aka "The Fridge"? My dad hogged our main TV whenever that team played... fortunately, we had a B&W TV in our room with an Atari set, and we played outside during the daylight.
The Marvel Comics version of Serpentor was way better than the cartoon. In the Marvel version, he cared about his soldiers & he had a sense of humor. Case in point on both the former & latter, when he found out the soldiers weren't getting fed, he told them in one of his past lifetimes, he took the crackers, potted meat, ketchup & cheese from an MRE & made pizza. In the Cobra Civil War issues the Joes sided with Serpentor. The cartoon version was a douchebag
Serpentor, Unicron, Stampede and Hordes Prime have one thing in common : They are 'Palpatines' in their cartoon series, being mostly in the background, while representing ultimate evil
My favorite version of the character is actually the one in the Transformers crossover comics. The idea of a half cybertronian/half human hybrid created in a lab like Frankenstein is such a cool idea.
I remember when the G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero TV Cartoon Series Season 2 aired. I remember when the 'Arise, Serpentor, Arise' 5-Part Mini-Series aired on Television In 1986. The 5-Part Episode Introduced the character of Serpentor voiced by the late-voice actor: Richard 'Dick' Gautier. I watched It when I was young In the 1980's.
Serpentor was supposed to be Cobra's elite general. What Dr Mindbender didn't consider was the traits that made all of those men in history great warriors, also made them outstanding leaders. Serpentor's ambition was his downfall. Serpentor led from the front, unlike CC. Zartan sent an arrow (using the same bow with which he killed The Hard Master), just like William the Conqueror did before him (one of Serpentor's DNA donors) to kill the King of Hastings, which landed right in Serpentor's eye.
That was really creepy - he was a half-human/half snake creature hanging on Roadblock and repeatedly saying, “Once a man…”. Even though he was the bad guy, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
Cobra Commander was wasting time, money, effort and talent trying to kill Serpentor. He should know Serpentor was perfectly capable of doing himself in.
I take it that Serpentor didn't acquire Son Su DNA as a bit of a gag, because villains, no matter how powerful, always seem to lose because they lacked the patience to see their plans through to the end, giving the good guys the break they need to win the day
I assume that the lack of Sun Tzu’s DNA was a plot device to make the final product Serpentor less than perfect, and allow a way for G.I.Joe to defeat him. I recall in his attack on Washington, Cobra Commander warned him that he was expending resources too fast, and that they needed to conserve. Because Serpentor lacked Sun Tzu’s DNA, he made the mistake of ignoring Cobra Commander’s warning. It led to their downfall, as the Cobra vehicles ran out of gas, giving G.I.Joe just enough of an edge to gain the upper hand. They had to use the last fully fueled Night Raven to escape and regroup.
I always thought that since the Joes captured all of mindbenders equipment, they do a joe version...Audie Murphy, Carlos Hathcock, Alvin York, ect...a humble expert marksman and team player.
I loved Serpentor and remember getting his figure and air chariot for Christmas BUT I hated the whole Cobra-La storyline. Gi Joe was so grounded in gritty reality, like the Springfield Saga. It just felt too wacky to me
