I was a vet nurse. We had a Sammy come in with severe itching. Dog looked all but defeated by the pain.
Turned out to be flyblow, completely hidden under the matted hair round his tail base.
We gave a G/A, shaved the area and one by one tweezed out dozens of maggots from the holes they had chewed in his skin.
It was the most gut wrenching thing I ever had to do.
Took 6 months for the skin to fully heal.
Then, when the owner finally realised that the hair would never grow back on the damaged area, he wanted the dog put down because he wasn’t pretty to look at any more.
Special circle of hell for that bloke, I’m sure.
If you can’t perform basic maintenance on these floofs, DON’T GET THEM.

The main problem of people is that they get dogs as pets "for beauty and relax." But the dog is an assistant. But even for beauty, the breed must be carefully chosen under the conditions of content and climate. For this, there are more than enough breeds, and it is pointless to have a crossbreed and outbred. But people are stupid.

This is my area of expertise! I used to run sled dogs up in Alaska. Samoyeds, Huskies, Wolf cross breeds were a few breeds that I rescued and trained. We had a very large barn that I had taken a section of and turned it into a grooming station. It took two of us to do five dogs a day. Many people don't know about the Samoyan breed. That they are very useful sweet dogs. Also their fur can be turned into yarn to make lovely sweaters and other Angora type outfits. All the fur needs is brushing out, collecting and piled up to take to a person who can clean and spin it. I learned how to crochet and knit and later bought my own Spinning Wheel and brushes so that I could make my own yarn. It became a side Hobby that turned into a lucrative business up in Alaska. I still have people 20 years later asking me if I make those wonderful sweaters and hats. That the beautiful white lasts forever. It's easy to wash. it doesn't shrink. You would think you could do the same with Husky fur but, alas huskies are just good for being very talkative, bossy and running. They are great sled dogs and I will forever miss my 20 years. Living in Alaska. As I've moved to the lower 48 states.

I honestly don’t understand why people think it’s their business to tell someone they can’t or can shave their dog if they want to. Dogs like samoyeds don’t get extreme matting overnight, which means the owners of this dog were not brushing him daily. Why get a dog you can’t upkeep? I see this too often with long haired breeds, and then they cry about the groomer not wanting to spend 3+ hours de-matting their dog.
Personally I think most doodle mixes are unsanitary with a beard and mustaches, but it’s not my place to tell an owner that they shouldn’t have their dog look like that.
There are many reasons why people decide to shave their pets. I rather someone recognize the fact that they can’t keep up with grooming and shave their dog, than keep the hair “for aesthetics” but the poor dog is suffering from matting pulling on their skin.

    • @eri6219

@@Tsakeli Honestly, at that point it should be done in sessions split up. Its best, if at all possible, to avoid shaving a double-coated dog. It should be an absolute last resort. Because the resulting consequences from shaving can be lifelong, and that is a young dog. I've seen some double-coated dogs that are shaved have to be regularly shaved for the rest of their life, because of resulting skin issues and the coat never growing back right again.

My girl had three 2-3 inch square patches shaved on her back/hips for heartworm treatment and it took almost 2 full years for it to come back completely. If any of the areas are still patchy or dry try rubbing vitamin E oil on him. Without their fur that spot can get sunburnt easily or dried out or agitated by just about anything they roll around in.

@@oricori9160 Maybe, but what would cause these issues in a full body shave which wouldn't also impact a smaller area? I can't think of any mechanism (besides sunburn) that would cause health issues with their skin only when a large area vs a small area is shaved. The myth I've always heard is that it "never grows back correctly" which I know to be false in the several breeds of DC dogs I have personally owned or fostered. If you find confirmation that shaving causes skin issues from a reliable source like a veterinary college then let me know, I'm always looking to learn, but I could not verify these claims myself.

    • @ASLsoFine
      @ASLsoFine 2 года назад +51

@@MrsSinkip My dog was shaved by the vet for a surgery. 3+ inch fur. Just as small patch around 3x3 inch. That "odd look" is worse when the undercoat grows in faster than the top coat as it is softer. It can make grooming tricky and mats much more likely for a while because undercoat is more wooly, soft, and absorbs more water than topcoat which is supposed to repel water.
It took my dog many months and a second shed to have the fur look right again.
My current doublecoat dog is shorter haired and has like a triple shed season, I swear, he blows his coat hard in May, again in July-August,, then grows thick in the fall.. but when shaved in June he wasn't fully grown back in by October and I live in a northern climate where temps can be freezing by October. His fur remained atypically short in that area (but did have some overcoat coming in) in the winter and was fine in spring. Years later he now has atopic dermatitis that is hard to treat and makes it necessary for him to be clothed for warmth and reduced allergen exposure.
How fast the fur grows back can also depend on where on the body. Short hair on legs and face grows back faster than on the body probably because it gets rubbed off so often. If you want to try it, clip a small patch on various points on a dog's body and monitor the heck out of it and see for yourself. It's more than just "looking odd." That said, shaving is always better than pain from extreme matting, but growing it back in is definitely not problem-free.

We used to have a Newfoundland. His hair was his identity. We took him to a groomers with strict instructions that he should be scissor cut only. He was not matted, and his coat was in good shape, just getting a little long. When we picked him up, they had shaved him. They even nicked the back of his neck with the shears. He was mortified. When he got home he dug a hole under a bush in our back yard, and climbed in. That's where he pretty much stayed the whole summer.

I had to used a horse shedding blade to break into it then swapped between slicker, demat comb and doing half inch section with the furminator for months. He would have killed the groomer and gotten himself killed if we took him to a groomer because he had no problem biting and drawing blood simply because he did not want to sit up or stand or face a certain direction even if he was tolerating the brushing and we did our utmost to make sure he was comfortable. That awful I don’t believe in some situations you have to fence dogs in, like if you live on a farm and train them to not go far, but NEVER let a dog that could be potentially dangerous to people and other animals roam. My dogs are all heavily socialized and all but our rescue have been since puppies. Our youngest was bone on the farm to our rescue and haves been around humans within the first 72 hours of being born. Since her mother really wasn’t our dog by her standards yet and heavily abused from puppyhood, I was constantly up there with her befriending her and making sure she didn’t move the puppies back to the abusive neighbors house (I might have stole them). All the puppies are the sweetest even if their father was apparently extremely aggressive and the momma is living it up being an outside inside dog of her own choice with her daughter, her daughters adoptive father the equivalent of the evil old man which allows no one to have fun (Chihuahua) and just the evil cat

I’m so sorry that happen to you, starting at a young age, those neighbors should have been more responsible for their dog, no matter where they live. Dogs who belong to you, trust in you, love you and wouldn’t attack you because they belong to you. If you get a puppy, it’ll feel safe and comfortable around you, even protect you. If you have friends or family with dogs, try to be around their dog little by little. My friends dog, at it was a pit bull, decided to sit on my lap! Lol big dog who people fear but he was sweet and just loves people. I sometimes fear little dogs, they can snip at you, my cousins Dachshund almost bit all my fingers off and my cousin was holding her dog, he was that protective to my cousin. I grew up with dogs in my family, so I can tell different personalities in dogs. If you can, go to a no kill shelter and ask to volunteer and maybe you can adopt a puppy or a dog that’s about a year old. Getting an older dog, you’ll get attached but it might not have the dog for too long. We had a dog like this one when I was 14, the sweetest fluffiest dog that always looked happy. Unfortunately some dogs are aggressive but mostly because they aren’t familiar with you or scared or just protecting their humans, having your own dog will love you and take care of you. 😁

I live in an apartment in a city and me and my little dog have been chased around by large dogs before too. I get the same way. If a medium to large size dog is running towards me, I start to panic and pick up my little one and start running the opposite way. Often times, the dog follows me even when owners are calling it. Dogs off leash that the owners have to call multiple times before it heads back makes me nervous. Makes me nervous when they don't listen to their owner, it shows the owner don't have a good control over it and it should not be off leash imo. Even dogs that pull on their owners leashes and doesn't stop when owners say makes me nervous. Worse is when they're aggressively barking and showing their teeth. Those dogs are very very dangerous and needs to be rehabilitated ASAP.

And this is why I will never own a longhaired dog like that because there’s no way I could handle it. Props to people w/ the resources and patience for all that.

If you brush them everyday it's not a big deal. It's the dogs with double coats that take a ridiculous amount of work and care it's hurts their thermo-regulation if it gets bad enough to need to be shaved.

I had two Samoyeds and they were a lot of work. I only have one now and an awesome groomer. You've done a great job with this beautiful dog!

Harper behaved like a saint. If He could speak I'm sure he would thank you.

I absolutely love watching your videos. I love that you describe the dog breed and temperament of the dog. I also love all the application I get about dog grooming from you. Thank you very much for making these videos. I love them.
