To be fair to the Rock coming late to the Superhero genre, he has been trying to get this movie off the ground for about 10 years or more. For goodness' sake, the man still had hair when he first pitched himself as Black Adam.

The Rock is actually a huge fan of Black Adam and pushed the studio to let him play him. And he's also been wanting to do a super hero movie for years now, he was supposed to play Doc Savage but I think that movie was cancelled or just never got off the ground.
I'm happy for him then. He actually did good. He didn't act goofy like in most films he apears nowadays. And he was belivable.
He wanted to played since 2007 but nobody let him so of course he was late to the super hero bandwagon
@@Thiswhatdoomsdaylistento why didn't they let him?
I do want to know how much he pushed Black Adam to be darker than what we got
@@Ignasimp it's not easy for someone like Rock who is a positive always personality, actually play dark character. He's a icon and star, sizable amount of people watch his movies because of him. Also, Rock wanted BA to be R rated, but because of executives, that didn't get through and instead, we got this average but fun action movie.
Crazy how The Rock wanted Black Adam to be R-rated but DC straight up rejected it... imagine what we would have gotten.
We will get a glorified and creative gore on ways of black adam killing people. That 13+ wont fool me just because they drop not a single blood when black adam killing them.
I was surprised that an PG13 had all those brillant "dark" deads... An R rating could be brutal I imagine
Same movie but edgier than ever
Given the ways Adam brutalized soldiers in the movie, it would've had lots of people getting ripped apart or turned into a bloody puddle.
A The Suicide Squad on NyQuil?
My favourite part was when Black Adam stared at White Henry for a good 30 seconds and screamed "it's about drive it's about power we stay hungry we devour‘" and totally devoured him. Really puts the Black Adam in Black Adam.
So that's what happened after that post credit scene...in my version it ended right before that moment...

_Black Adam stared at White Henry_
^....as every gay romance novel should begin.
Is there really character called White Henry ?
Honestly, considering how hard The Rock was apparently pushing for this movie to be rated R, I think that there *were* plans to make Black Adam a lot more sinister and a true anti-villain
Only for it to be shot down in favor of playing it safe
Honestly, I would have loved that. Shazam was more family-friendly, so seeing a more violent and darker version of Billy Batson would be a fantastic way to set Black Adam up as a villain.
Of course, that would decrease sales by 5% so it became a no-go.
Huh, that actually makes a lot of sense
@@owen723 Really? Im sure if we had the rock, an icon, and in a really dark movie everyone would want to watch that. They played it safe so it became generic/ boring.
@@idreeskhan8885 No, you gotta address the 15% potential audience that doesn't watch action moives.
Honestly that plan should had been to kill off the mother and the son. Seen that Adam bonded with them probably reminded him of his family. That would had surely sent Adam to the sinister side. He also had questions whats a hero. Them dying would had made him remember why long ago he deemed the peope of the world unworthy and especially his dislike for those who call themselves hero's
the rock being straight faced fit so well and when he smiles it felt refreshing and suddenly making jokes made it hilarious
A diverse cast, a decent bunch of actors, good male/female interaction, no "All men bad" and "All women stronger than any man" narrative, no belittling of the male characters and a decent if not spectacular story. Even if it isn't great, I hope it does well enough for other studios to take note and we can finally get back to way movies used to be, entertaining and fun.
Yhea, I've noticed they've been getting better about it. Marvel in particular has been absolutely abysmal but even at Disney they've been better lately about telling a good story first and diversity second.
This movie sucks as an adaptation, so not really.
but still no brein
A diverse cast, including a non-binary actress, where none of that diversity was ever even brought up in the movie. Seriously great way to do it. Also, the film addressed the whole "proxy war" approach vs the "not my problem" approach, and didn't preach about either. Instead, national sovereignty seems to be where they rest things, which is pretty dang cool.
Yeah, the movie was just okay and fairly unremarkable, but the fact that it's not following the "get woke" trend makes me quite hopeful.
@no Captain Marvel was pretty bad though
It was really refreshing to have a classic character from the comics wreaking havoc instead of being incompetent

I just saw the movie and one part about it that I loved was that they were not afraid to paint the Justice Society as a bit ignorant and narcissistic. The conflict that arose from that was really interesting and a refreshing perspective for how the heroes seem to do whatever they deem necessary, even when it isn't.

@@lykos2738 I don't think so. The film has nothing expect origin story of Black adam. Although it foreshadowed possible conflict with Superman we still need a couple more films for his character arc considering the film made him a hero that his people who loop up to.
To your point, I thought it was interesting how they validly called out the JSA for not coming and helping Kandaq get its freedom from their foreign oppressors, yet they didn’t linger on this as a way to belittle and tear down the JSA, moreso as a way to show that being a “hero” can be more nuanced that what Hawkman thinks it to be.
I don't know much about Black Adam, but as I understand it, he's the kind of guy who has an iron will, a desire to defend his people, but no morality outside those traits. His view is simple. You threaten his him, he ends you. Which makes him a great character to occasionally help and hurt the other superheroes.
He's a lot like Dr Doom. Where their loyalty lies with their state, and outside of the hero/villain dichotomy
@@BlueGamingRage Namor is like that as well.
I liked how they treated the character from start to finish. I thought The Rock, Pierce Brosnan and Aldis Hodge's (even though Hawkman was never black in the comics) performances carried the film. It's not perfect and there's some things that could've been polished better, but overall it does something relatively new in the big budget superhero genre by making a bad guy into an anti-hero, and does so in a believable way. I also liked how it showed Black Adam's complete indifference to killing bad guys until he was convinced by the JSA that he should probably tone the murder down a bit.
The reintroduction of Cavill as Superman at the end was probably the most exciting thing for me as Cavill's interpretation of the character is my favorite and kudos to The Rock for telling Warner Brothers to bring Cavill back.
Does something new? I love this movie, but it sounds like you forgot about Deadpool.
As a DC fan, this movie gave me everything I wanted. Is it groundbreaking. No of course not. But I’m hopeful for the future and am looking forward to more.
I think just from the character design level its far better than any DC movie to date, how everyone acts and their costume design is so lovable and will win people over.

Wokism again, there is black women in a superhero movie smh . Omg Disney when are you going to stop pushing these left wing extreme agenda.
Based on the what the drinker described it kinda reminds me of a bunch of the animated DC movies. Where they can exist in canon to another story, or they can exist all on their own. They might have histories that are different from the norm or even just separate from everything. I didn’t watch those movies to see where they fit in. I just wanted a superhero movie to watch for an hour and a half while I fold laundry or something. I really want to give this movie a go now
Kkkkkkkkkk you are almost convincing yourself that you enjoyed it😁
They got Black Adam tearing people apart right (especially the final scene like damn that was brutal even if it was only there for like four seconds) which is all I wanted honestly. He is the powerful, brutal ruler of Khadaq who will do anything and everything to protect his people; from aiding the Justice League, the Justice Society, and the Society of Super Villains to becoming a yellow lantern for a very very brief time.
CGI demon doesn't count as people, so still not R-rated
Plus it gives DC a step up on Marvel so that Dr Doom will feel kinda derivative (even though his story of being the evil but noble ruler predates Black Adam's rewrite).

Am I the only one who got the vibe that Hodge was playing a Hawkman whose already reincarnated at least once in the JSA? His relationship with Dr Fate and Waller and the way he carried himself spoke of a far more experienced superhero than his apparent age.
My headcanon is that he fought alongside Fate in WW2, likely as a white Hawkman, with Fate possibly watching over his estate until he was reborn.
no, if that was the case, why would dr. fate even "sacrifice" himself if hawkman can just be reborn. we all know why they race swap it. tragically they gave a good actor noting to work with other than "pissed off leader, that constantly wants your badge and gun on his desk because you are just too wild, man"
Completely wrong.
If he would re-incarnate then Dr. Fate wouldn’t have sacrificed himself to save him.
It’s just bad writing paired with the desire to replace a White character and force a NWA upon the audience, for the millionth time in recent memory.
Um you’re both wrong. Carter hall is the father of Kent…and also the first dr fate grew up and was in power with hawkman first reincarnation and teth Adam. Those three have been around for thousands of years..Prince kafu was hawkman, nabu was dr fate…back in Egyptian times.

Cuck.
The film felt very much like a pre MCU superhero flick, the kind we got in the 90s. A somewhat goofy and overall okay film that entertains but never gets you too excited or invested.
These types of films went away after the MCU took off but I think there is still a place for them when they're done well.
Intergang, by the way, is from Superman's Rogues Gallery. It's basically a 1920s mob that eventually somehow made a connection with Apokalypse, and they do a lot of stuff for Darkseid, as well as illegal trade on alien tech and stuff like that. They're a bit like a less-compelling Legion of Doom without any real allstars.
For what it's worth, Intergang is a thing from the comics, and the lack of information about their goals and leaders and such may be because in the comics they've got ties to Apokolips , and if they plan to go that route, they may be holding the cards close to the chest.
Or they just threw them in there to fill the mook role and didn't think about it too hard.
Oh they definitely under darkseid rule
Yeah because that usually links in with the guys from Metropolis too (Bruno Mannheim, Lex Luthor, etc).
Jack Kirby was actually credited in the movie's credits
(Fourth World by Jack Kirby)
I'm leaning hard towards mook role.
I have to agree with you on alot of points about Black Adam that they could've done alot better on. However, I felt the movie was alot better than okay. Alot better than The Flash movie, that's for sure. Methinks Hollywood has lost track of what makes a great Superhero film and, in that regard, Black Adam could have been a spectacular film but they wanted to play it safe. It's a shame because I would've loved to have seen a return of Black Adam as well as the JSA in some regard as well as Black Adam battling Shazam or Supes. At any rate, I'll have to accept that will never happen. Those parts will probably be recast in the DCU. Great review. Love watching your reviews.
I think they should have gone more bold and had Adam kill one of the heroes. Either, on purpose or mistakenly, it would have given much more weight to the moral conflict they played with.
Eh that would cause them to not work together like ever, I like the chemistry between hawkman and black adam but in the beginning hawkman didn't like black adam if he killed one of his teammates we never wouldve gotten the relationship between the 2 we have now, I also doubt hawkman is just gonna leave black adam alone after that, black adam kills and that's why hawkman dosent like him, but everyone he's killed has been bad people who hawkman dosent know, if hawkman hated him that much based off that, if he killed a good person that he knows that's OD they aint ever working together
Johnson would never allow his characters to be bad guys or incompetent.
Haven't seen this yet but I can agree that it would have made a better contrast between the stereotypical heroes and the morally grey one. Where the heroes could ultimately reconcile their hatred for the greater good because that's what a hero should do. Where as the morally grey type would probably care more about their friends or the end goal and everything between is a distraction.
Actually expose the heros as the one behind the intergang would be a more interesting plot twist
@@xsu-is7vq Wouldn't make sense though with the heroes chosen.
I remember ten years ago labeling a movie or game as "OK" was almost worst then saying it was bad. Bad movies tended to have Cult followings but OK movies were forgettable.
Times we live in I guess
These days:
Cringe movies have cult followings
Bad movies are forgettable
OK movies are crowd pleasers
Good movies are on TCM
Being OK still means that, but during these dark times being OK also means that you did your job as a product, which has became a rarity
Theres a difference between ok and 'meh'
Worse than saying a movie is OK is overhyping it as the greatest cinematic triumph since Birth of a Nation. Example: Avatar (AKA Dances with Smurfs). Once hailed as a masterpiece it is now seen as self indulgent enviro-pap. Ten years from now Black Adam will be OK and understood as a movie to kill a couple of hours of time.

When a movie is "OK" and the hype for it is pushed into overdrive, is an indication that Hollywood is content with marketing mediocrity.
@@asimhussain8716 Opposite actually. OK movies stand out because everything else is pure trash.
@@asimhussain8716 actually it's the other way around. I'd hate to be your student if you graded on a curve.
"well class, no one got higher than a C on this test, so after adjusting your scores based on the average... I'm lowering ALL your grades. You're all going to get F's now. C's are no longer acceptable in a class full of mediocre students."
Methinks you have the concept a bit backwards.
If the reviewer is woke, they'll hate anything the anti-woke viewer would like.
@@asimhussain8716 nope, analogy works just fine, it simply went over your head.
Let me break it down for you. When the average quality of a product goes down, the relative quality of a previously "average" product increases, as it is actually better than the majority of products out now.
When you grade on a curve, you base the scores on the student's relative performance in the class. Even if a student would have scored poorly in a previous class that was smart (for example: getting a C on a test everyone else got an A in) when he gets that same mediocre score in a dumb class, if it's the best score in the class, a normal teacher will "curve" the grades, so the class average is a "normalized" (look up the definition of a normal curve in statistics), and the C student now receives an A, since he's the highest score. However in the OP's case, when the average quality of all products (movies) go down, he also reduces his perception of the "relative" quality of an otherwise mediocre product (an otherwise "okay" movie now becomes trash due to it being surrounded by trash). So by that same exact logic, when the class as a whole scores poorly even the mediocre students (scoring a C), though scoring above the class average (a D in this case), now receive an even LOWER grade (an F) than the otherwise would have without any curve at all given that they're surrounded by idiots, they get scored as idiots.
The analogy is flawless.

The action scene when Black Adam appears is AWESOME. Best of any action scenes from Marvel's last phase.
There's some nice action in this for sure, I liked one detail when Adam gets shot in the head and you can see the bullet left a bruise that heals. The movie doesn't focus on it and they didn't need to add it, but they did because someone must've been passionate enough not to phone it in.

God, I love Dr. Fate. He should get his own movie.
@Skynet1 I mean as a character in general, not necessarily in this movie.
Too bad, he’s dead
Dr. Fate has always been one of the coolest DC characters, and part of the coolest part about him is that he's basically DC Gandalf. There are so few older heroes, and he's one of the easiest to adapt, unlike, say, Golden Age Superman, who is also cool, but has a bunch of multiverse baggage that comes with explaining who and what he is.
If you really were a Dr. Fate fan you would hate this portrayal of him. The helmet used to be a curse, now it's just a magic weapon.
I suspect Pierce Brosnan has no desire to play a recurring character. However, we may see Dr. Fate again, as it is the helmet that choses the hero.
Surprised you never mentioned that, in the comics, Black Adam is a straight-up villain. While he's loyal to his country he has no problem murdering innocent people to get what he wants and is willing to work with super-villains. This movie seems like a big departure from that and it's kind of a shame since it could've been interesting to see how a man like this came to be, hopefully they don't take as much liberty with everyone else too.
Because he's not. Adam has been a villain but he's been a grey area character far more and even spent a couple years as a member of the JSA. He's been all over the place.
I don’t think Anyone who disliked this movie have read about black Adam tbh
I mean, he titled it "ok movie" - following a cookie-cutter formular that doesn't have septic tank for a topping. Mentioning the comics tell a different story seems hardly worth mentioning. On the one hand, because that would require a depth of a critique an "ok movie" isn't worth. On the other hand because that's the standard in these adaptations: stay as close to formular as possible and take in only the bare minimum of the source material as necessary. If you think about it, going from the earliest adaptations most movies seem to consider the source material as a vague inspiration, no guideline or by god actual adaptable story. Dragon Ball Super, Deathnote, Percy Jackson, the first Super Mario Brothers -> actually adapting the source material almost never seemed the goal.
