My brother and I built a simple, but fairly successful, van der Graff generator while in high school nearly *fifty(!) years ago.* As I remember it, he did most of the work (he was *13* at the time!). He submitted it for a science fair at his school, and then I *re* submitted it as a senior year physics project at *my* school.
As I remember it, we mounted two large empty wooden thread spools at the top and bottom, *inside* of a 3" O.D. clear PVC tube.
We got our ideas from a Scientific American collection of science fair projects published in the early sixties. The book also contained homebrew plans for a device to demonstrate NMRI, as well as a *particle accelerator!*

Electroboom, Great build. your brushes rubbing on the belt causes the belt to become more and more conductive in time. The brushes are actually optimal when a 1/4 inch away from the belt. The brushes pick up charge via electrons flying off the belt, not by physical contact. The rubbing brushes will lower performance drastically, and, shorten the lifespan of the belt. Hope this helps! Another thing that can help increase spark length, is add an internal heater at the base of the tower. Seems like a bunch of work, but just an extra hour or so to put it in. Thanks for the video (and I usually spend a full week on my episodes as well, but just dress the same every time to give appearance of a one day film)

@@victoryu6570 The heat raises the average kinetic energy of the molecules which makes them move around faster. This leads to an easier ionization of the gas as some of the ionization energy required, is provided by the kinetic energy and therefore by the heater. Furthermore this makes it easier for electrons to get of the pvc pipe and onto the pantyhose (for the same reason, but this time lowering the additional energy needed for the work function not the ionization energy).

Has anyone used this source of periodic motion to build a clock?

The generator was one of my favorites years ago. The first one I made was just a test of materials... soup can for the collector, thread spools for pulleys ,a small motor and a wide rubber band. To my surprise (physics applied here) the spools had to be reshaped to a convex shape,as a simple parallel shape or a concave shape allowed the rubberband to roll up and off the pulleys. It worked. But,I never went to making a larger model complete. I bought 2 LARGE stainless steel mixing bowls to cut to shape for the collector and the problem arose ... soldering them together ( I had no welder to do the job) . Soldering wouldnt do it. I quit and began making a huge tesla coil, starting with a neon sign transformer of 15.5Kv It created such voltage and field that Ali that ran the small store downstairs was yelling up to my apartment window complaining that his store fluorescent were turned off but were still flashing on n off. I was amazed because I didnt have a Faraday's cage to get into for protection, and still,I created a field of that strength. And Im still alive.

The biggest air insulated Van De Graaff generator in the world is in the Boston Museum of Science. Up to 2 million volts on a good day. They don't depend on friction but they feed the bottom of the belt with a power supply. Huge double balls on the top. It stands nearly three stories high and creates extremely loud powerful arcs. If you want big sparks, you should throw a sheet of aluminium foil from a distance onto a powered CRT monitor's screen and try to pull it off. Make sure the sheet covers the entire screen area. My friend did this to me and it zaps quite violently as the sheet picks up the entire surface area of the TV's static electricity and concentrates it at one spot where you point your finger.

      you mean high current

    •  5 лет назад +19

it is indeed a very high voltage (therefore the arc) but in a very low current over a tiny bit of time.
very big voltage number multiplied by a tiny current number = very tiny power (watts)
and yet its over in a tiny instant, dropping the risk of tissue damage to very low levels.
it would be actually dangerous if it was an constantly fed current through is body (like regular AC mains power)
there is a better related explanation in this video: ruclips.net/video/8xONZcBJh5A/видео.html
