Looking at the lightly used/recently off lease market for the EQS SUV, you can get a nice 450+ model for the mid-$50K range. On the one hand, brutal depreciation. On the other hand, it makes it a lot more attainable to those who can't or don't want to spend over $100K on a car. I've been in love with the Model X since it came out, and used ones are about the same money as the EQS SUV, but for that money I have to wonder if the EQS SUV isn't the better/smarter buy. At 6'2, the 2nd row in the Model X is kind of tight, but all the reviews I've seen of the EQS SUV suggest larger people will fit comfortably in the 2nd row.
Hey Alex, I was waiting for your take on the EQS, good review as always. One thing though, did you mean the GLS or the EQS in your final comparison towards the end where it was listed against the Rivian, Model X and EV90?
Alex, as usual, you have done a superior job on this review. Your knowledge and judgement are excellent. The review is, as usual, very detailed. A debatable point: Your assertion that this vehicle's only comparable competitor is the Tesla Model X. I understand your reluctance to admit the Rivian R1S based on price, since it is not well above $100K. However, sometimes--in my view--it may be worth comparing vehicles across significant differences in price to expose significant value differences. I do, however, appreciate your bringing in the R1S (as well as the Volvo EX90) to illustrate the limitations of the EQS. I look forward to your full review of the R1S, when you are able to do so. Thanks for an excellent review. And by the way, I very much appreciate the setting of your reviews. Your property is quite beautiful.
When you put the optional high efficiency AC filter there nothing else will fit. Since you have a 450 model without it, it would have been cool if you taken a close vid of the front motor mounting area, I don't think anyone has done that yet. Thanke for getting the fast charging comment right. Peak charging is only a part of the story, the charging curve is what matters the most when you're charging up on the go.
Alex, this is one of the greatest EQS Suv review on the youtube with so much details. I was ready to order new Range Rover long base but yesterday I drove EQS Suv 580 and was very impressed by how it feels good on the road. Now watching your reviews to make a final decision :) What guys would your suggestion be? EQSsuv or RR?
My concern is the 12v battery since we all know that is the pre-requisite to start any EV (unless something changed recently). Specifically, the 12v dying or needing to be jump started. Who at MB suddenly decided that their reliability ratings went through the roof? Clearly someone at MB is detached from reality. 12v die from time to time. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to override common sense revolving around the 12v battery being inside a service-only front hood? At that point, just put it in the rear. It's worse when the battery starts to sulfate but at least the people who buy this will at least be able to access the 12v battery without much fuss if it was in the rear. The people who buy this EQS SUV are usually going to have ANOTHER car. In other words, they're not always going to drive this EQS SUV 480+ or be chauffeured in them. All of this reminds me of the half-assed EV solution the EQB and EQC are. MB really didn't try that hard with the lack of a frunk, 12v battery location, and the interior space efficiency.
@@ALMX5DP It voids the warranty supposedly. You would have to start a right to repair lawsuit to win against a dealership. Having said that, not many people buying Mercedes vehicles ever pop the hood let alone know what battery sulfation is.
@@Tokamak3.1415 where have you heard opening the hood voids any type of warranty? And I’m not sure what sulfation has to do with this, for all we know the 12v battery is lithium ion as well.
@@ALMX5DP Sarah nTuned, Autoline, Autfueghl and other reviewers have reported as such. That's why they spent the money to route the washing fluid to the side and add a user service door - that adds extra cost. When you pop the hood it says no user serviceable parts. Just like a power supply for a PC or the magnetron for a microwave. You can fight it but it will be another Louis Rossman kind of deal. There's no point from an automakers perspective to have a lithium 12V considering the cost and the expectation they will only change zero to one lead battery during the initial warranty - the 12V is a sacrificial load carrier for transient demands and to connect and disconnect the contactors for the high voltage pack. The newer AGM batteries work for the vehicles with high electronic loads compared to a sealed VRLA or flooded. EDIT: Just saw your SCCA videos. Nice. I used to AutoX before kids and marriage. We're a different breed of animal. It's why most people under 30 couldn't drive off in a 65 Stang even if you gave them one for free. I’ve had an R1S reserved for 2 years. Drove one this weekend, was very disappointed in the quality of the ride, very “bouncy” like a truck. The quality of the SUV was very good, but I couldn’t get past the ride quality. Will probably cancel my order. Went straight to the Mercedes dealership ND DROVE THE EQS was impressed with the ride and comfort, interior wa amazing. Outside not my fave, like a head turner car, but am considering it. Yeah makes perfect sense. I would reccomend getting an eqs once nacs roles around, there should also be substantial range improvements around that time aswell.@@pslawing
I'm waiting in line for the Cadillac Lyriq. To me, it's a great deal compared to the EQS. it's not a 3-row vehicle, but the 3rd row in this EQS looks like "for emergency use only".
I really don't understant why so many manufacturers insist on placing the charging door as far from the driver as possible. When I get home and plug in my car every day, I don't want to have to walk all the way around the car every single time, and no, I'm not going to back into my driveway every single time either. At least they didn't put the charger in the lower rear bumper like on other MBs though....
It's really sad when a hyundai ev has a better designed interior, even if the materials used are inferior. I hate the future of cars if this is supposed to be the pinnacle
If I won the lottery, my pick would be the GLS because of its execution and beauty. Given I haven’t played yet, so will not win: I’m looking forward to seeing the EV9. 😉 31:49
I've had mine for a month now. Other than it being bad with bumps in the road (air suspension is very stiff which makes you feel the bumps / pot holes!!!) and the ventilated seats being non-consistant with cooling, it's an okay SUV. I don't know how it got an "A" in the ride rating here.
Having the second motor will help with better acceleration and traction, don’t think it will impact range significantly. iX and Model Y would compare closer to the EQE SUV, can’t wait for that comparison.
When you say the pedestrian system sounds like a bad wheel bearing, I wonder if you’re really hearing the motor or gears, and above 30 mph wind masks it.
The question is though, how quickly can traditional automakers catch up? Or have they already caught up to a sufficient level to be considered true competitors?
Microsoft had a tablet product many years before ipad came out. LG phones had ultra wide camera way before any other company. But all of them failed. Tesla isn't ahead, it's right about time.
This is so shiny and glary I can not stand it. Why OEMs do such thing? Looiking at new Volvo EX90 - wood, fabrics, etc.... that is luxury. This is 90's disco. I wonder if all rich people in China love that, because those cars are made simply for them... Hope lucid gravity pure would have no piano black and be much cheaper than this. Waiting for iX7 in the first place -as basic nad for familiy as possible!
I truly want to like this vehicle but the blob shape and the slow 0-60 just kill it for me at the price point. Maybe I'd like it more on the used market if it depreciates like a rock.
Why don't you ask about crash testing cars with stuff in the trunk? Heavy stuff in the trunk could impact crash results as well, as they could break through the back seats and hurt passengers. Actually IIHS just crash tested a truck with heavy load in the bed, and it absolutely destroyed the passenger compartment.
Yeah, the IIHS and NHTSA test protocols only recently even added the kinds of front-overlap crashes that kill passengers, and usually don’t use mannequins that are even close to covering a majority of actual people (especially women). We sure have a long way to go…
Hi Alex, as a long time fan of your reviews, I’d like to offer a respectful suggestion..please 86 your repetitive use of ‘tons & tons’ to describe space and-or room. ‘Tons & tons’ sticks out like a sore thumb (compared to your consistent wealth of excellent information) and sounds very juvenile. Your reviews are second to none in your field and I hope you’ll consider new adjectives. Thanks!
I wish the subscription services mercedes offered is more talked about. Acceleration boost is cool, except its like 1200 a year and you have to keep paying for it unlike tesla acceleration boosts. Also you need to pay to fully unlock the rear steering angle on fully loaded models (yearly subscription) as well as a subscription for the "AR navigation system" (again monthly fee). I get subscriptions for HD Mapped highway driving systems like super cruise, blue cruise etc. But for physical hardware that shouldn't be software locked (I forgive acceleration boost from tesla because it can cause more wear on the electric motors and completely changes the internal software tuning on an already very fast vehicle) But I just hope the mainstream buyer of these vehicles don't entertain mercedes on this trash Idea that we need to not only pay crazy money for a car but also continue to pay a monthly fee to use features we already paid for in the MSRP of the vehicle
If Mercedes introduces a subscription based performance improvement, that would be the last time I consider any car from them, ditto for all the other manufacturers. That garbage doesn't belong in cars!
