I read somewhere the inspiration for The Pot lyrics came from a friend of Maynard's who was in court on drug charges. The judge chastised the man horribly and threw the book at him. Not long after the judge himself was caught partying with illicit drugs and sex workers.
So weird…I heard it partly had to do with his mother and her lawyer…haha funny how people spread different accounts
Yep that's what I heard too. The pot calling the kettle black in the truest sense
Tupac... This song was written following when they arrested and tried Tupac on drug charges. Meynard said it in an interview,
Some said it was also based on prosecution of Protestants on native Americans.
lol all the differing stories...though all with the same themes...abuse of power....hypocrisy....Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I'll always think the whole 10,000 Days album is Justin's personal Magnum Opus.
Aileen, this entire song is a double entendre. You got a lot of it.
Except it is Maynards. It is all about his mom.
@@joejacobsen6822 Sorry, but I disagree that the whole album is about his mom. Right In Two and Rosetta Stoned are clearly not about his mom.
First you said album then song which is it?
@@FallMatic I see how that was confusing. I'll edit that.
My feeling on the album was just a thought. The other part was directed at Aileen.
He went all out on Intension.
I'm so happy you commented on the bass line. Justin Chancellor is a KILLER bassist and the sound he gets from his Wal basses is absolutely insane! I'm not much of a pick player myself but I absolutely love what he does.
She definitely gets the vocals while feeling the music. I can't wait for her interpretation of this. I like the Grudge but in life now days shouldn't she look at Vicarious?
Yeah vicarious should be next for her, but right in two would also be pretty good considering the times we are in.
@@jusmaxjust i concur. We have to remember she is one person. We are a army, nice to have another foot solider. Those 2 songs yes and yes. Thanks bud
@@davidward9737 yeah not trying to overload her don't mention T&L yet
yes! Vicarious is an excellent reflection and the human condition
@@jusmaxjust I was about to mention ticks and leeches because she rewound it to hear Maynard scream.
Maynard on The Pot: Screams
Aileen: That scream
Maynard on The Grudge: Hold my spiral
"I didn't know he was capable of that." Cue The Grudge. 😁
... and if you want to hear his best scream ever: THE GRUDGE.
this
Ticks and Leeches
One reaction video I watched said the scream in The Grudge was 27 seconds long. Wow!
@@robertgaskell6663 ... check. As my Journey is counting 28y by now i can tell you. Shit get´s deeper and deeper and deeper. A life-must-see!
... and if you want to hear THE best scream ever: THE GRUDGE. Fixed
The thing about Maynard is he mostly sounds completely different on every track. The man of many voices
and he even sounds like a different person in a perfect circle. At least that is what i percieve. He is amazing.
@@achafilms3968 You can still its him by his vocals. There are some songs in tool that sound more like APC style. He is extremely talented though.,
Went from not knowing this channel to you being my new favourite music reactor, genuine, knowledgeable and downright awesome are words that come to mind. Hope you can react to some music from Porcupine Tree and Stephen Wilson soon I know you will love it!
Oh wow thank you so much! 🤘🏼❤️
Most people I know that are into Tool are diggin' Porcupine Tree as well, like me. So I'm with you on that request. "Shallow" would be a good starting point I think. Not to much for the beginning. Greets from Germany!
@@AileenSenpai Yes, PT is a great choise! And with them, live versions are very, VERY good so you should try to pick them as primary if there just is an a good quality one available (Hatesong, Arriving somewhere but not here, The Sound of Muzak, Dark Matter, Blackest Eyes, Fear of a Blank Planet, Open Car, Anesthetize, ... there are so many good live performances).
@@AileenSenpai By and Down by A Perfect Circle 🔥💯
Great analysis of the song, also perfect timing to choose this song around 4/20 😀. Tool won a Grammy in 2020 for best metal performance - 7empest. For sure check it out at some point in your journey, it’s a very long track. Love your videos! ❤️
In terms of Growing and Learning, it's not a bad idea to go back to the beginning of TOOL's music and restart your journey there. The band has grown significantly in the last 30 years. Their lyrics have evolved. The message and the depth of the music has transformed over time. They have said that their music is a "tool" to be used to help the individual grow in life. And their discography is a brilliant example of human development from the angry, rebellious days of youth, to the insightful, aware, and transformed spirit of maturity and experience. Jumping around from popular song to popular song is fine, but you will get a much deeper appreciation for each track if you experience their growth, maturation, and spiritual awakenings if you begin at the beginning and work your way forward. (IMO)
Oh yeah, time to get your groove on.
I remember that the first time I listened to this song I musta been high, high, HIGh. If you don't feel totally pumped after this, then I am sorry you must not have a heartbeat
ADAM JONES! Give him some respect as well! You mentioned the bass, drums, vocals, but come on, that guitar is fucking great as well
I was seriously pondering whether to suggest this or The Grudge to you before you started with Tool. I thought you must love the vocals on this one (we'll find out).
Still waiting for the Grudge :c
Definitely looking forward to The Grudge.
And Vicarious.
And Aenima.
And Eulogy.
And Right In Two.
And Descending.
And 7empest.
And Wings For Marie.
And Parabol/Parabola.
Aaaaand literally every single song they've ever created
@@QuickeMart Look every time someone suggests something I go like "but but ... my favourite song!". But then I feel dirty about even thinnking about contradicting other suggestions since y'know, they're all fucking fantastic.
So well let's enjoy the ride. We'll get there.
... looking forward to your Tool-Journey. So far i really like your passion and devotion toward the spiraled layers of this realm of spirit, power & vulnerability. Much Love from Germany. KEEP THE FLOW ... peace, S.-)
Funny how the faith in humanity can be restored in such a gentle gesture as an eyebrow peeking up at 2:45 🤨 an understanding smile 😏 and another eyebrow shift.. 🤌✨✨✨🎶🎶🎶😂😂😂🤘🤘🙌🙌 (new to your channel, after 15 years or so got to mark it off my bucket list a month before lockdown in Dallas ✊)
Your quickly becoming my favorite sub LOVE THIS ❤️🔥
Yes girl! You are experiencing Tool exactly as you should be. They absolutely envoke all of those emotions and MORE! These guys helped raise me when they first cane out I rocked the first albun so hard while I was in high school and I used to wonder if they sold their soul to the devil because, like you, I've never had a band affect me the same either and how can every song on every album be a BANGER? Talent like theirs is beyond extraordinary. Love this band!
Notice how her heart rate drops just I kittle... I love that.. Welcome to the Army.
I worked as a Server/Bartender in Fairbanks, AK for 15 years and this is my favorite song. I started watching your reactions and figured you were from that industry. I finally got to this reaction and I loved it! I switched it up and I work in the commercial cannabis industry now because the people of Fairbanks need to chill the fuck out and smoke some Pot. Cheers to you! Love your reactions.
I love the "weeping shades of chosen indigo" which I take to artfully mean people who act more sad about something than they really feel. You choose the shade of blue in your fake tears because it's an act.
I dare your jaw to not drop when you hear the scream at the end of The Grudge. And yes...it is real.
Yeah after this you have to do either, Vicarious, Ticks and Leeches, or Right in Two, other peoples suggestions are just as good as mine. You got work to do, views to be had, and money to be made. I've watched dozens of other reactors and I subbed to you after the first video I watched of you listen to "Snuff", where you said when we grieve its a good thing, because that means we loved, I was like damn, this girl is smart definitely gonna sub.
I've seen TOOL in concert 9 times now. And each time I've gone it's been with different people for the most part. Each time we go I always tell whoever I'm with "Look, after about the third song don't even try to communicate with me, because I won't be conscious of you."
Based on your reaction to Tool, I would suggest Parabol/Parabola ( together as one song )
The heart rate monitor is SUCH a great idea! Subbed
So Great to see you immediately grabbed all the interesting themes and followed the story, on your initial listen.
Keep bringing the Tool and we'll keep coming back for more. Good stuff.
Seem like a very intelligent kind soul. Hard to find these days. Keep it up
Another fantastic reaction. You’re getting the nuances of what Tool is all about. Keep up the great job.
This is one of my favorite Tool songs! 🙌🤘You should also check out Sober 👌
"Foot in mouth and head up ass-hole... Whatcha talkin' 'bout?" is one of the coolest lines ever. Talk about calling someone out!
I met a girl about 20 years ago that was way into Tool. I had barely heard of them, let alone listened to them. But, as years went by, the have popped in here and there, and now I respect the shit out of them. Maynard is a master lyricist, and the rest of the band just makes it happen. I'm glad you were able to experience this. I only wish I could be half as talented as these artist are.
Hello there Aileen! Love your reaction to my favorite Tool song! I subbed your channel and also followed you in TWITCH.
Thank you so much! 🥰
@@AileenSenpai I'm a moderator for 2 people in twitch and RUclips along with 4 duscords! I will definitely check out your show and spread the word about you!
Welcome to the Tool Army. You totally get it.
It's all about the audacity of projection. Great video. :)
Tool Army here, I know you were touched by the song Lateralus, there is another song by Tool that will draw you in, and touch your heart Parabol/ Parabola. This song is about living life, and being Aliiiiiiiiive!
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite tool songs I think he’s just saying whoever made him mad must have been out their mind they pointing at him while eyeball deep in muddy water lol
thanks so much. good to hear others feelings.
Loving your perspective on these amazing songs! Tool Army will be here in full effect I can see your channel blowing up you're a very talented person. Not sure if it's been previously mentioned in the other Tool reviews, but they do have a bunch that are meant to be played together. Parabol/Parabola, Disposition/Reflection/Triad "Aka Holy Trinity" to name a couple.
Also when doing Push It make sure to do the studio/album version first, and then the Live Salival one afterwards as they are both very different sounds.
There is also a chain of songs which have deep meanings towards Maynard and his mother. Starting with "Jimmy" (Maynard was born James Keenan) as an 11yr old boy who's mother suffers a brain aneurysm which leaves her in a wheelchair paralyzed, and his dealing with her continued faith in religion. To "Judith" (Her name was Judith Marie) by Maynards other band A Perfect Circle which depicts him a little older and anger telling her her lord did this to her. The next songs are from the 10,000 Days album which the number is connected roughly to time between her paralysis - death, and also roughly the time of Saturn Ascending (More on this in coming songs). The first is called "Wings for Marie (Part 1) and was written by Maynard before his mother passed, and 10, 000 Days (Wings Pt 2) was written after she died.
Keep em coming the #Toolarmy will be here to support you!
Thank you so much for this info! I appreciate it and your kindness greatly ❤️❤️
In my humble opinion , the best song they've made so far. Vicarious is a close 2nd. Great reaction and break down, young lady. 😁😁😘
Tool is amazing. The whole "You musta been High" thing is kind of like someone saying "Man you musta been high to do something like that" aka "You musta been high to wave your finger at me like that"
The Pot, it’s the gateway drug to Tool!
Great reaction love your analysis of the song. There's no turning back now keep the Tool reactions coming. 🤘🏻
"Thats whats affecting me, so Im just gonna go with that." Congratulations, youve found the meaning behind every Tool song. Takes most people a heck of a lot longer than that.
"Get a real job". How mean!!! We love you here🤟🏻
One of my favorite songs.
I am so glad you liked it.
People don't find tool. Tool finds people... when they're ready. Welcome to the army. :)
As any sane, thoughtful person will attest, all humans are the same. Completely blows my mind that someone would think more or less of another human based on job or wealth or appearance or anything. Be kind, be loving, be forgiving - we are all in this together.
Well said. Everybody poops. Nobody is that different from anybody else. Eliminate hypocrisy. Live happier.
Tools most explosive song filled with meaning is third eye I can bring tears to your eyes
I'm here for every tool reaction.
Love that your fully diving into Tool!! Keep crushing it!
You are so smart, insightful, great enunciation, oh, and beautiful 😀. I'm loving these reactions! Keep up the good work!
Your a great reactor for Tool music… you get it!! Welcome to the Army.. keep 🌀ing
Love you Aileen ❤️
Keep up the great work
I really appreciate in your reaction vids that you let the music do its thing and feel the groove without pausing it every 30 seconds.
Really looking forward to you analyzing "Fear Inoculum". So much to dissect. Love all your insights.
She gets it 100%! Welcome to the Tool army. :)
this song is one of the top 51 of my fav tool songs.
I dig your Tool reactions, it's really cool to see someone really understand the depth and meaning of the music and the significance of Maynard's lyrics; I think you will enjoy "Parabol/Parabola".
This is your best review. Big up
a gorgeous open-minded young woman reacting to Tool? I'm about to watch all of your videos! subbed
P.S.- Maynard is in two other bands, one is "A Perfect Circle" & the otheris "Puscifer"; Puscifer has an a beautiful song called "The Humbling River" that I think you will enjoy even if you don't post it here.
Love seeing you go thru the tool journey
Nobody has told her about A Perfect Circle, 3 Libras?!!! Maynard is incredible
You do you. Always!
The person he's speaking to was an ayahuasca tea user. The pot is a literal reference to it. Judging Maynard for being a drug addict while being one himself. Just found your channel.and enjoying it. Thank you.
I'm going to make an observation that might seem a little stupid, but ....
Coming from a construction family I've seen builders who measure-cut-fasten like an industrial machine. Every cut board fits and joins exactly where it was planned. No wasted effort, no wasted lumber, no rushed motions. Every added piece adds to the completion of the plan in a smart and efficient way.
I think Maynard's vocals are a lot like this. Every tone, inflection and stressed syllable goes exactly where the plan says it should fit, and nothing is over complicated. There is no wasted effort. He is very precise with his voice, and he uses that precision to implement a very well crafted plan.
As a bassist, my opinion that Justin chancellor is the best bassist in his style where he uses a pic. that lends to the bass’s deep mid end tone and high quality sound.
A lot of people don't realize that Justin is making those sounds in the quiet part after "...have been out your mind" and then the really heavy, grinding sounds after the "weeping shades of indigo" part just after that. Some do, of course and it's why Justin is often referred to as TOOL's "secret weapon". 🙂
Vicarious by Tool has unbelievably good and cryptic lyrics. One of my favourites.
RIGHT IN TWO has to be the next on your TOOL journey! 😮
If there was a front runner for best song ever.. this would be it. Every instrument and lyric is perfect. Even the message is spot on.
Not sure if anyone has talked about it yet but Maynard does a series of songs dedicated to his mother and more specifically, his relationship with her, which changed over the years. It's best to listen to these song sequentially, the first is called "Judith" and was recorded with his altl band- A Perfect Circle. Then continues with Tool's "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days(the amount of time his mother was confined to a wheelchair following a cerebral hemorrhage 27 years prior to her 2004 death) on the 10k Days album, obv.
I never noticed until now that after he says fucking hypocrite at 7:45 you hear it softly in the right headphone a few seconds later. So many little touches, and I didn't even notice that one until now despite hearing the song so many times.
Tool, what else can be said! Decades later, every listen still gives you that first time feeling!!
Baby baby baby Aileen .!!! 100 points to those words. Im your fan #1 !!! Love to hear your voice 100 % a beauty. ❤
You get it, finally someone who gets it, everybody thinks this song is about smoking weed because they don't listen, you get it and I appreciate that
Good Lord this girl is gorgeous
Spiral out keep it going
Everyone judges everything and everyone they encounter. It's what you do with that interpretation that defines who you are.
Great analogy and interpretation of this track. ❤️
I agree with you wholeheartedly girl...good for you for picking up on some badass lyrics and speaking up!! 🤯🤬
BAD ASS INTRO! Excellent song, amazing reaction and analysis. Music is art and however you perceive the lyrics and the way it makes you feel is just as real as what Maynard felt as he sang them. Over-analyzing is part of the experience!
It was only nominated for a grammy I believe but they did win the grammy for 7empest which is a beast song where Adam Jones goes god mode.
The grudge, push it, Schism, Eulogy, descending are great songs to do next
So glad I found your channel. Love your reactions and I'm extremely impressed with all you do. Cheers!
Tool Wings for Marie - 10 000 days
I'm telling you hun tool is the greatest
“That scream at the end… I didn’t know he was capable of that.“
Oooooh, boy… can’t wait for The Grudge…😬
LOVE your deep thoughts on TOOL's songs. they really are a band that you don't just listen to, but experience. Vicarious has my favourite lyrics and my all time favourite is Descending. I literally listen to it when i need some music therapy - i once even listened to it mid-anxiety attack and it brought me out of it. can't say that about many bands! sounds like you've been through a lot too, i hope TOOL can give you the same therapy it gives me!
You do such a great breakdown. I love Tool because they give you takeaways/life tools in each song.
Your comprehension of Tool is super mindful.. even if it's a first listen.. but the real recognizes and resonates with the real.
I can tell you have a very grounded and a very soulful soul.
I work in the food industry and love it but it doesn't define my life and who I am. We are all equal was touching to hear.
So thank you for that.
Being insightful and an embracing of [the now] / this moment is the way to live. LiveLifeLoveLife
"I embrace my desire to..." That and the next twelve lines of Lateralus is my mantra for centering of self/a safe place to start.
Parabol + Parabola !
Every TOOL fan watching: 🙃"Wellllll if you like that little scream😁, you should hear this one." LOL
But for real.....The Grudge.
Great as always girl. Stay blessed
Such a banger. Great reaction! Loved ur take. It’s so satisfying seeing a new Tool fan feel it..and get it. Killer brows btw damn
The very last note has no resolution and that works perfectly with this masterpiece
"weeping shades of indigo" and "cozened indigo" is a reference to the term "crying fake 'crocodile' tears" ,
"Kangroo" is a reference to a "kangaroo court" as is in a corrupted court trial to try and convict a person based on little evidence or a case where a person is being framed and being judged based on massive negative bias, and the defendent is most likely innocent of what they're accused off. the lyrics aren't about judging use of marijuana or something
I bought this album day 1. I've listened to this song hundreds of times since. I still get chills on those opening vocals every time
Just one piddly "El Correcto" correction: Eyeballs deep in muddy waters.
I loved your reaction. 😘
I love that you kept pointing out the baselines in The Pot. Every album highlights a member of TOOL in my opinion and 10,000 days was (for the most part) Justin Chancellor’s standout.
Since you seem to be loving more of Maynard’s vocals and lyricism, you gotta dive into some Aenima.
I vote Pushit next!!!
Forget all of the comments about how great these bands are. They are great for sure, but I want to bring attention to your story. A story that has become important to me as it has so many. You understand so much more about the feeling of music than most anyone I’ve met in my entire life. It’s rare and I applaud you completely.
