I remember living under a stairwell for 6 months at a community college garage. I always kept the area clean and neat(odor free), didn't bother anyone and respected everyone. The security guards on night shift got to know me as a person and didn't even rat me out, even some of the students that knew I was there would leave food at my area whether I was present or not. The trick was for me was to know that I was in a homeless situation but was far from being a bum.

Having travelled to various countries around the world, I have seen levels of poverty that one can't even comprehend, especially for those used to living in the first world nations. There are people who are legitimately starving and on the cusp of death, while here in America folks can live rent free without knowing the true meaning of suffering truly as a destitute.

Been homeless. I know how it feels. I used to sleep in a staircase, but I never bothered anyone. Always came in late and left early. One day I tried to get in the building I used to sleep in...it was locked. So from that day on I started walking at night in the winter. Walking all night long so I wouldn't die of hypothermia. Walking to keep my body warm. You stop, you die. I'd be so tiered in the morning, but I had to keep walking, until noon most of the times. It hasn't been easy.
Edit: I've seen lots of people here giving their opinions and claiming to know my life better than I do. Anyway, the story I told happened years ago. Unless you've walked in someone's shoes, please don't make assumptions. I'm not homeless anymore. Haven't been in years. While I was on the streets, I managed to register and attend the University of North Dakota's Aerospace program. I graduated and got my pilot's license. I've been flying for FedEx for quite a few years now. I don't miss those days when I was homeless, but I learned a lot of valuable lessons. Don't judge people before you know their story. I didn't choose to become homeless. My father died when I was very young and my mother couldn't take care of me. I'm a black man born to a white woman. Her family just didn't want me around, thus my homelessness. Life is hard, life is brutal, but life is also kind. Best wishes to all. And if you see a homeless person, don't be quick to pass judgment. My first night on the streets, my only thoughts were: how did this happen. I was about 15 years old.

You think people like this didn't try being respectful and presentable? When you're treated like worthless trash by society regardless, you stop trying to make people happy. Perhaps it should be the other way around, start treating impoverished individuals with respect. Start treating them like the human beings they are. Try to understand their struggles and offer help. These people are abandoned, often helpless, and what do we do? We criminalize them. We tell them it's their fault, "pick yourself up by your bootstraps". Then we wonder why they turn to this and crime rates go up. All for what? Because we arbitrarily decide people like this aren't worthy of help? Because free mental healthcare and rehabilitation services is "too expensive"? You can't have it both ways. If you don't want to help them then you have to accept them doing this. These people exist whether you like it or not. So you can either do something to solve the problems that cause these situations or you can forever complain about their existence.

sounds like you lived in a bad neighborhood, i’ve lived here nearly 40 years, NEVER EVER lived like that, grew up North Bronx, lived in manhattan side of Brooklyn, so deep into Queens that it was practically Long island, and now living in lower Manhattan, never had none of those issues you speak of, that’s a shame it sounds like you judged it based on the crappy place you found.
for the life of me idky ppl pay outrageous rents to stay in such awful locations, i’m starting to feel like the real estate ppl are taking advantage of the transplants that attempt to live here. i have homeless people around, everyone does, but they’re friendly fixtures in the neighborhood, and with all that money paid someone cleans the grounds, so i don’t even know the needle situation because i never see any needles. i can’t imagine creeps standing in the lurch waiting to grab at those going in and out, why weren’t cops called? that’s a crazy situation to put up with for 7 years in SOHO, at some point, it became a choice to continue to live there until you decided to move, because new leases were being signed.

They need to be given city wide custodial clean up jobs, to learn what an impact things are to an environment and subsidize their housing, and get them seen by mental health specialists and get them off the streets. These are human beings. Mostly troubled in one way or another. To just turn a blind eye defines us as a society, but more so as humankind. It affects everyone. The sick (mental, physical, drugs, alcohol). 3.The lazy (they expect society to support them). We can help the homeless with a village of common sense healthy teamwork.

Also add the displaced because certain groups here have had successful townships destroyed because another group always burns these towns down or put some of them underwater. Gentrification and literal terrorism on American soil by Americans to other Americans is why some are displaced. Also imagine a nation where every inch of the ground was literally stolen, the original inhabitants literally hunted and murdered and the descendants of those thieves refuse to acknowledge it. Karmic debt is in order for America's transgressions and you know what I'm talking about.

There's only one type of homeless person. Trying to separate them into classes is just an attempt to justify doing nothing about it. We should be helping all homeless people, not just ones we arbitrarily deem to be deserving of help. That's how you solve the problem. We specifically haven't made any progress on this issue because we've tried to offer social programs by a rationing system based around "who really needs it". All that has done is make the programs inefficient and ineffective. A massive headache for any homeless person regardless of whether they're "healthy, sick, or lazy". Getting help through these programs often requires a litany of checks and balances to make sure that the "right people" are getting the help. To the point where it's practically a job in and of itself to receive help from these programs. Which disrupts their ability to find work by being time consuming and creating a situation where they're constantly worried about ensuring their paperwork is in order. Offer these things unconditionally. No one's going to seek out these types of social programs unless they need them. We don't need arbitrary prerequisites or to exclude certain individuals from using these services.

Hello, from CO here. I thought it essential to inform your team that while we shopped from 2-4p Sunday 4/10 in the mile high flea market someone sawed off the catalytic converter on our car in the north parking lot. It has come to my attention this is not an uncommon occurrence. An article on my feed informed me that SNAP benefits will be decreased on April 15th, while our country already struggles with inflation. Now struggling people or people that have developed a lifestyle that now requires the expanded SNAP benefits will be looking for any kind of income to sustain their situation. The current housing market has sold the living spaces that were previously available to section 8 and low income, leaving the tenants to mitigate their move to affordable living or fill the gap in the rent by any means necessary. The increase in metal costs paired with unregulated scrap yards gives these opportunistic citizens their means to continue extracting what they can from the dwindling working class.
I contacted mile high for the security footage they said they had, I was transfered to a higher up who then told me cameras are only in the market not the parking lot. It's not their responsibility to insure the safety of their customers. A report has been filed with Adams county.
Thanks so much and stay safe.

Ms. Jacquelyn Simone is absolutely right about the City of New York's lack of focus concerning their raising homeless population and the cost of living (if I may add for apartments and houses that aren't even worth the asking price in their city), and need to provide efficient funding to house homeless people in permanent residents who want to get off the streets and better their lives. Temporary housing from what I understand is as it says: "TEMPORARY HOUSING". I don't know what it's like to live out on the streets, but anyone can get there, and surely most people don't want to be out on the streets.
However, anyone can most certainly see it is not easy - and what makes it even more of a despicable shame is for a city that's suppose to be so "Rich" 🙄 to have so many homeless people, then want people to come spend money from other cities and countries to come and tour a dump...!?
Also for those in higher positions a.k.a "Crooks in Business Attire" is what I call it, who have the ability to help, then sit there and pretend they don't acknowledge when another human being needs financial and housing stability is absurd... maybe get your heads checked to see if there's some kinda sickness up there... because I see there's something obviously wrong with that whole situation over there 🤔

Honestly, I'm against this. Sure, it's sort of a problem, but honestly, talking about the homeless complaints, like, you could eventually end up homeless. It can happen to anyone. And when you are homeless, you need shelter. If there's no shelter, then that's just wrong. Like, idk.

Well, that guy had shelter for two years and look at the mess he leaves. Children living there should not have to be subjected to that for that long. It's ridiculous.

Difference between being homeless and being a bum. Also being in an area like that is a huge deal to the residents. I would be furious and probably do something about it myself if nobody else did.

The building management should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this for so long. People paying rent should expect a certain quality of life. To come out your apartment and see that, disgusting.
