I went to school in NYC in the early 90s. I was homeless for a few semesters and it was not just me, there were a lot of students going to school, part time jobs, then library to study or the school's studios. Then end their day at a shelter or a park. This issue is not new, it's just worse now.
It’s heartbreaking, no child should have to worry about that. I hope things are going good for you now.

No one knew, no one knows. I didn't know until I saw Cash's report. Unfortunately, I have no faith in these so called "leaders" to find adequate solutions, with the excuse being we are doing the best we can.
Sometimes, being home is worse. Kids whose only meal of the day is the school lunch. Unbathed, clothes that haven't been changed in weeks, negligence, abuse, the horror stories I have heard from teachers makes me wish you have to prove competency in order to have kids. Seriously. Far too many parents in this world should not be allowed anywhere near children. Ask any teacher, your jaw will drop with the conditions some of these children are forced to live in.
Cash, you are probably one of the top citizen journalists right now. You grab the attention of people like me who do not even live near NYC. You cover a wide range of topics that affect the city but also the nation. I for one appreciate all your work. Well done my man! 🍻

I’m in Ohio and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.
A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. This is not financial advise but get buying, cash isn’t king at all in this time!

This happened to my mom while she was raising my sister and I in Brooklyn. She had a good job with pension etc and we went through hell during the early 2000’s. We were constantly moving and jumping, we got scammed , slept in our car during one of the biggest snowstorms NYC had, my sister and me were struggling in school to keep up and there were no resources then to help us, I can only imagine how it is now. I’ve never seen my mom so stressed and worried everyday after teaching all day. I would never forget it and she did it with a damn smile when she was falling apart but had to hold it together for her children. Eventually we moved to NJ and sorta made it out but this homeless pandemic has been brewing for the last 20 years and no one can help or doesn’t know how to start. I was born and raised in NYC…. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!

Escape from Newyork, it all came true, anyone with any brains could predict what's happening, its unsubstantible unless millions of new homes are built, which isn't going to happen for many reasons. When you're overfull like a boat you sink and it's everyone for themselves.

You remind me of myself and my mom. Only in another era. We moved to Manhattan from from Cuba in early 60's. Lived in rooming houses. You couldn't be homeless then. If there was such a thing a welfare, she didn't know about it. But there was lots of work then, housing was cheaper. We ended up in Boston. I did okay in the world. My mom passed last year at 93. She never married. I miss her.

Homelessness is notoriously hard to count because there's so many gradations of it - from people sleeping rough to people couch-surfing or in shelters: so one way round that is simply to ask people if they are.

The landlords wouldn't charge this, if they didn't believe they could get it. And leave the others out, who cannot afford it.

Cash….excellent work. As a nyc teacher, it is really unfortunate that the city is cutting funds on education. I teach special education and they are coming for us the hardest. The problem is that the city isn’t really prioritizing the students safety and education. They are prioritizing politics and you should never mix politics with education because the kids truly suffer from it.
Who gives a shit about students, all funds should go to the immigrants.
One side is much worse than the other, the RepubliCons want less always for education, if they could they would remove all programs, especially for special education, so please keep that in mind when you vote.
Unfortunately education is political. It involves other peoples tax dollars. So that immediately makes it political since it’s paid from the political system. If you don’t want education political, homeschooling is really the only option. I’m not saying he problems don’t exist but education is definitely political and as long as it’s paid for from taxes, it’s always will be! Not everyone agrees that the same things are important that’s just the nature of reality.

A lot of people including myself didnt realize how essential the internet has become for schooling. Children can't even do assignments or schoolwork without the internet anymore crazy.
Its really sad because before the internet kids had a much higher level of education. Test scores in math and reading are in the toilet these days.
The teachers should no longer be allowed to give any assignments that require internet access.
Ah yes, because back in the day we had to you know... READ A BOOK in order to actually know something instead of googling the answer. Granted the internet has helped a LOT of people and I do believe it can be an essential part of life to bring fast education to people. But it isn't the be all end all of education.

The homeless issues in NY are not new. The sudden influx of immigrants has made the very limited resources problem worse. It amazes me that the new arrivals are refusing accommodations because the accommodations don't meet their standards. Homeless New Yorkers have been dealing with adverse situations for a long time.
Early in my social service career, I worked up close and personal with some of New York's homeless population. Those individuals had a tough time with getting their children to and from school. The City provided carfare for them to do it and the parents saw to it that their children made it to school. Oftentimes times those families had to uproot their children and move to different accommodations that were not near the child's school but they persevered and put in the work to make it work.
I don't know the solution to the predicament that New York finds itself in but, the influx of people arriving in New York has put a tremendous strain on an already fragile situation. Quite frankly, living accommodations and resources have been depleted.
The UK is the same. People come here don't want to work and get the best houses. It's ridiculous
The new waves are Venezuelans, they are socialists. They want handouts and have expectations that we are resourceful and will take care of them.
If there's a problem in this country there's always a lower class population to blame.

Its like every immigrant gets a Buckingham palace a gardener a chef and butler with a nanny don't forget the very basic formal transportation a Rolls Royce limousine for tuition accommodations. Like any other big city it is class warfare. You have to fight to survive.
Those congregate living locations were brand new and clean. There's nothing wrong with that. Migrants are meant to work towards their goals in life while having stable and sanitary living conditions. And, they do, but are rejecting them. This is not Club Med, nor should it be. The migrants travelled with a lot of strangers, and they will continue to live with a lot of strangers while they get their lives together. Who is promising them free hotel rooms and free homes?
Thank you Cash for bringing this up to the forefront. We become so focused on the migrant situations and forget about others born and raised here. I feel really bad to know that there are young college students who have the need for housing and are becoming homeless themselves. Its terrible that we can find extra money to shelter others but can't help our own. Sometimes I wish I could help out a student with his/ her need for shelter but I want a guarantee that they would respect me or when its time to leave they dont try to over stay and put me out of my own house.
I recently attended an event organized by PbatesLTD , and I was thoroughly impressed. The event was well-planned, engaging, and exceeded all of my expectations. It was a memorable experience.
I live in Texas and I had to move my kids out of public school because of the influx of migrant children. The teachers here are mostly not bilingual either but they were taking so much time trying to teach both languages that no one is really being taught anything. It has completely disrupted our schools and btw it’s not just spainsh speaking kids. It’s Arabic and other languages too. I have a very dear friend who is a teacher and she wants to quit teaching altogether because she feels like none of the students are actually learning anything.
Same here I moved my son out of the public school by our house to a charter school the first day of classes it was 3 or 4 parents and kids who didn't speak English lucky my girl is Puerto Rican because nobody spoke Spanish we have a real problem in this country

The US government help Israel send billions every year. This year they send $14 billion on top of the $3 billion annual payment. Because a closet rents for $2-5000 in New York.. then you need money for cabs or subways. My friend’s daughter went to Georgetown University. She was lucky her parents helped her survive. She moved home to California a few years ago.

Homelessness happens suddenly. And when he first had the kids he likely had good pay and job and all that.
Stop assuming everyone does not use basic math and reasoning skills.
I’m in Texas. The border states have been overwhelmed for a long time. Homelessness continues to increase and Billions in state funds are being allocated to the illegal immigrant population. Whenever we complain about the influx, we have been mocked and ridiculed. I am not happy it’s now impacting other states but perhaps it would not have been as been as large of a problem if we had pulled together at the beginning of the influx to create a plan.
I’m in Texas too. We were asking for help and just called racist by other state officials. It’s funny how that just applied to border states, but not them. May God help us all.
@@Lewtable , we have millions of people that have shown up unexpectedly in my state. If I go to the grocery store I am handed a note asking for money for food, they are starting to go into neighborhoods, ring the doorbell and ask for money for food. When schools start, they are hit with an influx of students they didn’t expect, many that do not yet speak English. If you go to the ER, you may (usually) have to wait until the next day for a room. They are full with people that are not here legally. There used to be a small safety net for people that is no longer available. I know an elderly couple, the wife normally paid the bills, she got sick and her elderly husband took care of her. Their homeowners insurance lapsed by 45 days and they had a fire. The wait for housing assistance was over 2 years. The people who paid taxes for decades have no safety net. My grandparents were legal immigrants but didn’t consume state/federal dollars to support themselves. Fentanyl is also causing deaths. Border cities with a population of 3,500 people are being hit with 11,500 people entering their town in a day. It’s not the people in the cities do not care , we simply don’t have the resources to support and assimilate the open border.
@@MommaBirdd that's because most of it was due to racism. the reason border states are hit so bad is because the system is intentionally not being followed as indicated by international law. asylum-seekers are to be processed and provided shelter somewhere in the US until their cases are called up. If you don't process them, they simply back up in the border states.
@@HappyDog47075 we actually 100% do have the resources. it's local politicians who are unwilling to provide/use them so that people get angry and vote for the other side. even if it cost $100,000 a year (the same price a prisoner costs to keep in prison), that's $6.4 billion to take care of all the asylum seekers in NYC. That's a lot of money, but it shouldn't cost more 100k when I'm able to live in the city for closer to 40k. Get the adults jobs, pay teachers properly and fund schools equitably. It's not difficult. Stop spending 11 billion on cops who aren't doing anything anymore because they got mad people complained about their substellar performance and attitude and start paying social workers. People are profiting off the suffering of others, both financially and politically. Also, 6.4 billion is nothing in the grand scheme of things. For example, the fraction of the covert operations budget that we can possibly verify amounts to over 90 billion USD. What are they doing with that money? Top Secret. But I guarantee it's not helping anyone but those in power stay in power.

We know they are coming but where is the strategic plan? I agree we should spend taxpayer money in our own country vs. wars all over the globe. The more the government spends, the more inflation and lower quality of life for those here. We have to borrow money to pay for war. Would like to know where the money goes for covert operations but I don’t think they will disclose it. I plan to vote for Robert Kennedy, Jr. since neither political party seems to represent me. I think more people are beginning to realize third parties may be our best option.

Thank you for creating and sharing these videos. My heart goes out to all of these families who are trying to navigate their way. There are so many barriers. I also feel for those who have always called NYC home and feel the pressure. It's frustrating and overwhelming for everyone. All of these old systems are broken. They will eventually be burned to the ground and new systems created by our grandchildren and their progeny, which will be more efficient and better for all. Unfortunately, it's going to be painful until that time comes.
The old timers say that NYC has been corrupt since before Koch was mayor....they say they don't see it changing. I tend to agree with them. Low income housing has been an issue forever...each mayor promising to address homelessness and affordable housing....then nothing changes. It won't change until people are prioritized over profits. I not hopeful that will ever happen.

Thank you for highlighting homelessness. It is a problem not just in NYC, but across the country. It is a terrible situation. It’s also not new. Cots in tents is not the answer.
I retired eight years ago and it was a problem then. We used to bring family’s laundry home with us so kids could have clean clothes. Some schools bought laundry machines. Having no fixed address is the tip of the iceberg.

Totally understandable, but it's also important they learn in your house to do their fair share and contribute, otherwise you are not teaching them to be self sustaining when they do go out on their own.
Your children will love you for that. My parents wanted me gone & constantly reminded me that their house wasn't my home.
I couldn’t make it in NYC. I took a leap of faith and moved to the southwest and now I’m thriving. NYC sucks. Living there is just accepting to struggle.

Not really applicable to asylum seeker families though. You move because you have to, not because you think you think you can make it there. For other immigrant families, well, you take your chances I guess. When people were initially moving to North America(new World), I'd guess most weren't entirely sure they'd make it either. But the idea that they could make it and make a life for themselves, well, that was enough.

The homeless problem will not end. There's too many people making too much money on the homeless. Six figure salaries are enough to motivate the admins to keep plenty of people homeless. It's pretty pathetic. But thanks for reporting on this problem Cash. You're one of the few who will.

Exactly housing is so expensive. Food is so expensive. Taxes are so expensive. Everything is so expensive. Not even small businesses are profiting anymore from nyc, it is just all the landlord and major corporations.

@@marie-evepomerleau4476 simple: city budget for homeless programs over 2 billions dollars just to help to resolve this problem ., but most of the money not going to fix the problem is going to the packet to cover many salaries and frends corruption,.
But the city is paying their salaries. The city also spends something like a billion dollars a year helping the homeless. Treating homelessness costs money. That is the incentive to try and eradicate it.

My cousins all moved to nyc...they are doing fine..it take tenacity - something Americans seem to have given up on...pun intended. Its like incels who think they should get a date after asking out 10 women..sorry but it takes at least 100 lol...but you hit on 1,000 in a month you're a chad. Same goes for housing, jobs, etc in life. Plenty of new yorkers are doing fine, working now, not online whining life isn't fair..that's how youtubers need to handle themselves butthe culture online is give up and stay with mom lol.
It's always the kids who suffer first and most. This is an abysmal failure of leadership just when NYC needs it the most.

The wealthiest folks also pay the most in taxes - their rates are the highest. In a capitalist, free-market-based society, there is always going to be income / wealth disparity.

I believe middle class and the super rich immigrants are paying for these tax supported services. I geuss that explains why the middle class is disappearing.
@@1IIiII1 Even lower- and middle-class folks use the same 'tricks' you mention to try and avoid paying the highest tax rates. The IRS often tries to uncover those techniques, tho, and they usually target the wealthier folks whom they suspect of fraud.
Cash, I love your channel. Living in NYC is so overrated. Having a mailing address that says New York, NY might be a status symbol, but the sacrifice to maintain that residency and lifestyle in the long term is not suitable for so many people. TV shows like Friends and Seinfeld made it seem so fun and easy for the average American to live there, but Cash has done a wonderful job demonstrating how NYC is a hard pill to swallow.
I stopped looking for paralegal work in NY. Took a job in TN instead.

Because illegal immigrants are more important, and people keep voting for people out to benefit themselves. If New York is too expensive why does a person refuse to leave? At some point people need to realize they are in control of their lives and it’s up to them to do what’s best for their selves and family.

@@damien7157 OP’s point is that NY is spending billions to support people that aren’t even from the country, and they come over unable to even support themselves, unlike normal immigrants. Perhaps NY should be focusing its dollars on supporting the people who were born in NY rather than those who are simply seeking to take advantage of it.
When others ask why we refuse to leave….This is not like buying milk! Some of us have deep roots in NYC! Some of us go to school here; have our family home here and work here!

My senior thesis was about homelessness with youth. 20-40% of all homeless people are youth. The higher end of that spectrum 40% is for major cities like NYC, LA, and Chicago.
Wow, I’m a parent and I couldn’t imagine letting my oldest son go to school, see him struggling, and not be heartbroken enough to do something. I pulled my son out of public school and honestly, if you can then your kids are better off. Their better off doing workbooks at home at this point because they aren’t learning anything. Sitting in a crowded classroom with kids who want to do whatever they want instead of sitting down and paying attention. I’m The SoCal area and the schools are terrible. Great video! Very informative

I stayed at a domestic violence shelter with my 3 toddlers. It was very difficult to live there. They had no internet so it was impossible to find housing, jobs, child care assistance to improve our situation. I had to take my 3 kids to the library and quickly search a few things before they started crying and we had to leave.

The thing that puzzles me is, there can't be THAT many people who can afford a $5000 a month apartment. Where are these realtors even finding tenants that well off? And if they do exist, what are they all doing for a living? It does beg to wonder...
realtors would rather keep apartments rent high, keep their property valuation high and have that one in a million person rent out their property.
also these renters all talk to each other and rent at the same rate so local renters dont have a choice in the price for similar apartments

Most apartments don’t cost $5000 unless you live in certain areas or Manhattan. More areas are getting gentrified, but there *are* affordable places-relatively, for under $2k. This is doable if you’re earning two incomes.
If you work minimum wage, at $15 an hour working 10 hours a day, you’d make $750 a week. Minus 10% off your paycheck, that’s $2,700 a month. If you’re single with kids…it’ll be rough for you. But it is doable for two parents. Also, if you’re earning that little, you’ll get Medicaid, so you don’t have to worry about healthcare. You will also get food stamps (which is adjusted for number of family members), so you won’t starve…completely. NYC is very unaffordable, but it’s not impossible. Many low income families are able to live there just fine. And if you’re savvy, over time it’s doable to find opportunities. It’ll take a long time, but it is possible to, for example, get an education (CUNY has many programs that’ll render your tuition almost completely free if you are low-income). As far as your children go, I can’t imagine being a homeless student, but as far as opportunities go, NYC public schools have the most resources, programs, and connections that any low-income family will have. If you are a serious parents and you take care of kids, you can make sure that they get into good public schools (even some of the best in the country if your kids are good enough, since enrollment in NYC is mostly not dependent on where you live. You can apply anywhere). If I were to grow up poor, I would choose to live in NYC. I know from experience, and I don’t think I would have gotten anywhere close to where I am now if I grow up in a rural area, or basically anywhere else in the country. You don’t realize it until you experience it.
However, I guess the point is that in the scenario above, you’d need very engaged parents and specific type of children to succeed. For the average family, this isn’t the case. I would say, it might be harder and have lower chances of success, but the margin of succcess is magnitudes larger than it would be in other places.

There is the choice of capping and lowering rent, banning empty properties from remaining empty, allowing some people to live for free or nearly free (no rent, only utilities).
The landlords are getting screwed as well
These kind of classrooms will mean even more teachers will leave their jobs out of frustration when they have to spend so much extra time with children who can't speak English. Yes, they will learn the language but it won't happen overnight....just one of their many struggles.

I remember back in 2019 I went to Manhattan "houseless" I skate so I always had a couch to sleep on or park to kick it at. But there is a lot of homeless kids from 13-19 in NYC it's crazy!
Not just NYC. It’s happening everywhere. Collapse of the public education system. We’ve been headed downhill for a while. The more illegals they allow in the faster we descend. Everyone is on their own. All we can do is take care of ourselves and our families.
And the illegals do not pay for the schools. There is no way they should qualify for housing support, free food, free medical care, or free education.

Thank you for covering this.....this is so sad. I was homeless in the late 2000s while attending college. I'm talking "pan handling, sleeping on park benches" homeless. This was around the time the markets had just come out of a recession, and I had lost my job and apartment. I think the solution is to implement laws for those under 25 to not be evicted if they are in low income housing due to inabilities to afford rent. This was the largest amount of homeless people around the time I was homeless; and over half of those were homeless during their childhoods. I too, was homeless in my childhood. I also think that if they used money going toward asylum seekers to assist homeless students, then create a different fund for Asylum seekers; this issue would be resolved in so many ways.
There is no “funding” for asylum seekers. I’m sick of people acting like immigrants get to stay in a hotel for 10 years without rent. These hotels offer at most a week of stay.
It’s a homeless shelter that is open to anyone who identifies as homeless, not just American homeless people. Who go there every few months.
Cities that offer sanctuary are funded at the state level, and by city locals, churches, etc. Not by social security, not by tax dollars, not by anyone’s money.
Clear and straightforward to use, help function very useful. Also helps to know that there are humans in the background. No negative issues to report. Withdrawals are straightforward and not time consuming Pbatesltd

Yeah i heard third world people say their country isn't even that bad, so a 4th world country. A Bulgarian stated recently they are a poor country but they have no homeless or food banks.... I should add or mass newcomers, their 9 million population is stable.
Everything is out of balance like for example 9 k British live in Bulgaria, whereas nearly 200 k of Bulgarians live in the UK.
It's all nuts and disastrous, we have a housing crisis too and owners want to get out of the rental market which is going to leave up to a million homeless, as their homes go on the market
@@yvonneplant9434 agreed. Mass has a population of 7 million and about 20,000 homeless kidd. If that extra 100,000 in NY is attributed to asylum seekers then that is a huge problem.
