I feel like "the plan" is to ignore this place long enough so that everyone leaves, then developers can come in, fix it up, charge outrageous prices and continue the cycle of unaffordability.

Developers don't want this. It's not a easy commute into Manhattan and the property would need to be filled before they could build anything on it.

it would probably be faster for me to ride the train from New Haven to grand central than it would be for the people in The Hole to use public trasport to get into Manhattan, and New Haven is 50 miles from the city. @@MrSloika

This is the kind of piece the local TV stations should be doing.
I suspect some of those "abandoned" vehicles are actually occupied but are allowed to look abandoned so nobody will bother the people living in them.
I'm kind of surprised that nobody has thought of planting weeping willow trees. My parents had bought a two acre property with what looked like a stream but was actually where the neighborhood drained. I suggested that they plant a weeping willow at its base. The drainage ditch disappeared and eventually smoothed out to the level of the rest of the lawn.
Yes, there are lots of trees that suck up quite a bit of water from the ground. I had a client tell me once that they chopped down all of their cottonwood trees and after that their basement started flooding. What a waste of badly needed space.

We have a natural spring on our farm land that floods and planted the same trees now 20 years on our land no longer floods .
Weeping willows are great provided you keep them 30 feet from the septic beds . They will wriggle their way into the drain tubes and restrict them if left too close. i've never heard of cottonwood other than the cove but makes sense , absorbent growth would make a drastic difference.

It’s easy to miss it because it’s really located, between Lindenwood and Cypress Hills. And East new York It’s not technically not queens, but it’s not technically Brooklyn either.

I used to live in the Pink Houses literally 2 blocks away … & that area is crazy … it’s a dumping ground for bodies too… that’s the area they found Immett dead body at 🙏🏽… behind the brush by Gateway mall… that area is known for mafia killings….that area has the belt pkwy one on side & Linden Blvd on the other… & that movie theater is closing as of 2 days ago🙌🏽🙏🏽
That’s the area where experts searched and searched for the jogger from cross bay. Then all of a sudden the victims father joined the search team and 𝗆𝗂𝗋𝖺𝖼𝗎𝗅𝗈𝗎𝗌𝗅𝗒 found the body 🧐 but a Black man. with special needs somehow became the culprit

Imagine living in one of the most expensive places in the world with the highest taxes and the city won't even provide basic services. What a total clownworld.
This is a universal problem in the US, I live in the Midwest and we have to deal with similar issues when trying to get local municipalities to use our taxes on infrastructure projects or really anything that benefits the tax payer.

Imagine all that standing water/sewage in the buildings that are vacant and don't get pumped out. Perfect breeding grounds for mold. I wonder what the health conditions are for the 50 residents that choose to remain in such conditions.
I know this neighborhood. It's called Dog Town. In the background are the Linden Plaza apartments. Further up are the Cypress Hills projects and the Pink Houses.

They should plant water thirsty trees, like Willow. Fescue grass ans Willow would change that grossness into a beautiful habitat. Also, the city could begin to raise the ground level by using the area to dump topsoil that is removed from other construction sites. 1 week of trash removal would clear all the junk out. This is 100% fixable… find a Green-based civil engineering contractor. It doesn’t have to look like this.

The hole also extends below Linden Blvd. behind the Linden Dinner. Back in the 1960s there was a few houses down there, most of the houses have been torn down by now. To live back then and go into the southern end of The Hole was like walking from 20th century New York City to 19th century rural Appalachia.
I've lived and worked in nearly every NYC borough (Brooklyn is scary), yet I have never heard of the Hole until this video. Thank you Cash.

Amazing reporting! I grew up in NYC and have never heard of this neighborhood before, too bad Cash didn't give the actual name of this neighborhood, I doubt it's officially called "The Hole". I also wish he'd interview some of the residents as well as address the question of why they haven't yet sued the city. If you're being forced to pay the same taxes as every other New Yorker but getting non-existent services, the city shouldn't be surprised when residents bring a lawsuit.

It's really called The Hole by way of East New York. I had family in Linden Plaza (seen at the beginning of the video). Back in the day, my dad said it was nothing but grass there and it was the official borderline between the poor Black residents of East New York and wealthier white residents of Howard Beach.

The scary part about that neighborhood if there's a real rainfall and there's no way for the water to go. That place will be on the ground because it's basically like you said a basin.
So is any underground basement apartment. They aren't waterproof. The drain systems get overwhelmed as well
As if there hasn’t been any “real rainfall” . This area has been desolate for decades. When driving the conduit if you blink you’d miss it. It’s otherwise unseen territory.
If that was the case, this place would have *zero* residents still living there. The Hole has had "real rainfall" just as much as the rest of the city has had "real rainfall". Hurricane Sandy affected here just as well.
Finally!!!! If I had to live in NY, THIS would be my neighborhood. Chickens, a garden, self-sufficiency....Now, you're talking my language. But I'm an old Texan, so that probably has something to do with my need to be left alone to live my life without gov't intervention. BUT, if these people are paying for infrastructure? Then the city needs to come in & take care of their taxpayers. I agree with @ChrisJones below. Seems like the politicians & businesses want to run out everyone so it can be turned into expensive condos or something. Pisses me right off. I hope & pray these neighbors come together & sue the mess outta the city. But I also know that as long as they keep electing the same type of politicians they have no chance. Once elected they are forgotten all over again.

Hey Cash, thank you for making a video on this bizarre neighborhood. When I did my engineering master's thesis on flooding in nyc, this neighborhood was the spot for the most flooding. If you look at satellite map data from the past, you will see that some areas in that neighborhood was being used for disposal of chemicals and burning of materials. Over many years, these activities contaminated the groundwater flow and probably made the area non-porous. That's why there's so much standing water, because the water can no longer penetrate through the soil. The area is almost 4 blocks and it is segregated from other neighborhoods, I remember the closest neighborhood's sidewalk is at least 10 ft above the "hole". It was almost like the city abandoned the area and built around it. - Bivob

I used to live next to this place! I knew it from the second you said the elevation. Just didn't know what it was called. Growing up I always wondered what was wrong and why it was so low and flooded all the time. I literally had NO IDEA people actually lived there. I thought it was completely abandoned. Those poor people. It's not fair that the city ignores them.

No taxation without representation. All of these 50 sum residents need to come together and fight it in court, pool all their money together. That’s their only hope tbh.
Look at all the outsized representation that the oligarch class receives, and only having a fraction of the tax burden that the middle class has. There is no existing elected Republican or corporate Democrat who doesn't function to make the already fabulously rich, richer.
It would be hard to justify spending the millions necessary to fix this one area when the city is so short of money and so few residents are impacted. It's hard to accept but needs of the many vs needs of the few. Sadly the most likely outcome is the whole area being condemned so the cost of fixing it can be rolled into the construction costs of redevelopment.
Yeah I think you are right, the most likely solution is gonna be encouraging the residents to move out willingly or straight up condemn the whole neighborhood, pay everyone to move, and then start over from scratch. The fact that anyone even allowed the land to be developed in the first place is a horrible mistake, look at how much damage and money it is gonna cost the city today just to cram a few more people into city limits 100 years ago. @@willythemailboy2

That's what I would argue if I was one of those 50 residents. If 40 of them banded together to write strongly worded letters to the city, I'd imagine the neighborhood is pretty tightly-knit, and that they could all band together to stop paying their property and city taxes until they get help. Might not be legal per se, but neither is taxation without representation, technically speaking. If anything it would get the situation in front of a judge and would be another big headache for the city.
Move there and try it.
Easy to tell other people what they should do with their time and effort.
Most of them are probably just glad that the police don't kick them out of those abandoned vehicles they're living in.

(at least in my experience) all people think about when they think NYC is huge buildings, overflowing garbage, and people od-ing on the streets. There's another "forgotten" area in nyc called Meadowmere. It's much less dangerous than The Hole but even further removed from civilization

At first, I thought this was Willets Point in Queens near CitiField where the Mets play. What people don't realize is that every borough has these areas that don't have storm drains. Another area without storm drains is Meadowmere right near Kennedy airport which is on the border with Nassau County. I'm sure every borough, except Manhattan, has these one-off areas that time forgot - and the city chooses to forget.
They tore up a bunch of those lots behind ex-Shea Stadium to build CitiField™️ IINM but that isn’t to say that WP is a great neighborhood. I did see a video years ago of someone who went back there and it was like Mad Max.
@@goobthe3rdI had a flat fixed there (near Shea) on a Sunday about 30 years ago and I thought I was in a third world country. The building construction of some of those auto repair shops are quite questionable. If those shops were in Florida, one hurricane and they'd all be gone.

There's probably a lot of stealth happening there. No doubt some of those campers have people living in them. In fact probably a few trucks parked around the city are actually moving tiny homes. Lots of yt videos on stealth tiny home/box trucks and van builds.
Willets Point is currently the neighborhood with the fewest number of residents (11).
I live on the other side of this, the trash dumping is a wider problem but the flooding is so localized. Sometimes when I take an Uber, the driver makes a turn in The Hole because GPS has no idea…The movie theater across the street has closed and will become a grocery store. Many interesting (though still troubling) things are happening in this ENY area - please continue your coverage - maybe go out to Gateway shopping center - Thanks

I use to live very very close by over on 790 Eldert where those big buildings are. And it would fill up like a literal river in those back streets. Crazy you’re covering where i used to live many years ago.

Lol I lived in Lindenwood " new howard beach" for 10 years. The hole was only 2 blocks away from the neighborhood pizzeria and movie theater. We just saw it as a dumping grounds. I always thought it was a old and abandoned warehouse that was closed off to the public. It does flood but it never seemed so bad due to its close proximity of the nicer neighborhood surrounding it.

Raw sewage isn't something a resident of an American city of NYC's scale should have to deal with. Radical idea, I know!
I worked in a HS in Soundview up in the Bronx and whenever it rained or it got too hot, the sewers got all rotten smelling and they told us at one point NOT to drink the water from the fountains because of pollution from the landfill (apparently that particular section was built on landfill)
Its run off, NOT raw sewage running from local toilets.
I used to pass The Hole on my way home from work and had a friend in HS who lived there. Definitely a forgotten part of NYC. There were some old mob stories that they used to use the area to get rid of some "things".

If a cop car comes and asks what are they doing? The answer would be" Oh we're helping build up this poor neighborhood buy laying out some blocks of cement

I have a chainsaw, snow blower, self-propelled lawnmower, and weed whacker. I've also lived in places where they put houses on stilts because of flooding. So if I need to move to NYC, this would be a good neighborhood for me. Not likely that I'll be moving, but thanks for the tip just in case.

That amount of standing untreated water is extremely concerning not to mention the concern for mosquitoes in the warmer months. It’s sad that rural areas in my county in South Carolina seem to be more attention.
Within the first few minutes of watching, I said this looks like parts of Houston, TX. Low and behold you show an abandoned bus with Houston on it.🙃 I'm born and raised in Brooklyn and live in Houston now. Many parts of Htown look sad like this. I'm glad the majority of BK doesn't look like this. There are very gorgeous and safe areas of Brooklyn, for anyone wondering.

In my suburb living experience, you'd call the electric company to remove branches from power lines. He thinks the park department handles power lines? And septic tanks never fill with rain water because where would sewage go? Rain water is supposed to collect into a stream otherwise water pools into a pond. I believe he's making a mistake in that the street water he's finding is simply not making its way into the rain sewers.
Love your videos and commentary on NYC real estate and neighbourhoods, but this is by all means NOT the toughest neighbourhood in NYC

I'm from Brooklyn, and I know exactly where this is!!! It's near linden blvd in Howard Beach. There used a lot of mafia activities going on there, and this place is where they buried dead body's .

Just from reading Bloomberg's article on the same topic, there is David Lopez, the 72 year old resident who used the chainsaw you mentioned, Richie Gonzalez, a 20 year resident who owns a rooster and others.

My grandparents are from East New York/City line aka the hole. Forbell street used to be dangerous. A few years ago you would of never been able to just walk around with a camera and film over there
Forbell is a correctional facility. Around the corner is a homeless shelter. Down the block is Pink houses and Linden Plaza. I remember shopping in TSS (times square stores) backinthedayz before the movie theater was built. Across from movie theater was one of the worst nursing homes in America. Patients remained deceased & “allegedly” undiscovered for days.
It's still not safe to walk over there. Two years ago, an off duty cop was shot and killed over there.
Forbell and Sapphire Street are extremely creepy especially at 3am alone on a bicycle

I know this neighbourhood very well. It is off of the A-train which isn't bad and it is near local shopping on Liberty Ave. But yes, the flooding can be a pain.
