    I’ve been camping and fishing on the Outer Banks since ‘76. Ocracoke is a special place and needs respect and love from its visitors. So do the residents of the Outer Banks. The old line families are truly a living history of the coastal south. Proud, hardworking and wary of “dips” from the mainland. Good call on the “drumfish”. Red Drum, redfish, puppy drum are challenging to catch from the surf and delicious. Don’t miss an opportunity to eat some fig cake made locally. It’s sublime.

      Try just below Ocracoke sometime. Portsmouth Island officially part of Core Banks is a uninhabited barrier Island with ferry service for vehicles 4×4 recommended. Rough camping in tents or slide in truck campers. The Island is yours to fish , camp enjoy. Took my daughter when she was 4 and she still talks about it at 34 +. Great drum , blues, trout + fishing. We caught 2 puffer fish and two sting rays.in 3 days. We did what she wanted in daylight while I fished as much as possible after dark right in front of camp. Beach tent camping isn't for everyone , sand fills everything day 1. We adapted.

    My family is from Ocracoke and Hatteras. It's been a while since I have been there but have many relatives buried there. It used to be a nice little place until it went all touristy. And the ferries were free to take. My mother-in-law was a Howard. Lots of fond memories.

    That brings back memories! I visited Ocracoke several times in the 90's but I admit you showed different parts of the island, I didn't recognize anything but the lighthouse (too bad they didn't let you film, if the parks had been more accepting, the video could have been much better.) My first trip was by plane, the rental company's insurance required that I fly 15 hours with an instructor before they would let me fly by myself. The instructor asked me where I'd like to go and I picked Ocracoke. The airport is at the north end of the island very close to the beach. We landed and walked to the water's edge. I resolved to come back later and stay overnight. I don't recall if I flew or drove but we stayed in an inn on the harbor. I remember Howard's Restaurant gave us some good meals. There was a Silver Pond or something where Blackbeard was cornered and eventually killed -- I think this is a local legend and might not match the history.
    And I'm glad I never had to drive a big rig on those little roads!

      This response is not meant in a negative way; but for accuracy, please allow a couple corrections. (I've been going to Ocracoke, multiple times per year, off-and-on since the 1950's; most recently since the early 1970's; I've gone via private boats, the ferry's and by plane). Ocracoke Island runs SW to NE. The airport is not in the northern sector, it is in the southern sector, south-east of the town; it IS close to the beach, and is a challenging air-strip to fly into when the crosswinds are strong.... The islands' harbor is called Silver Lake; that is not where Black Beard was killed; nor has any account of his beheading suggested it took place in Silver Lake. Silver Lake, the harbor, did not exist in Blackbeard's/Edward Teach's days; 'the creek' as it was locally called, was dredged out to form Silver Lake during WWII for military needs. Blackbeard/Teach was killed in 1718 by a British navy force sent by Virginia Gov. Spotwood, led by Lt. Robert Maynard. (this battle occurred right inside the Ocracoke Inlet/Teach's Channel). This is not 'local-legend'. It is well-known, well-documented historical fact... The only ways to get to Ocracoke Island are by private boat, small plane, state-run ferry system; you cannot drive to Ocracoke Island. I agree that Howard's Pub had decent food back in the 1980's-1990's; not so much the last few years I've eaten there; it's gotten very 'touristy'.

      @@andrewfyakim525 By all means, I accept the corrections. Relying on a 30 years old memory of two or maybe 3 trips to the island, I was handicapped compared to someone who had been there more often and more recently. Looking at the map, I find that indeed, the airport is about 2/3 of the way to the south (or west) end of the island, almost directly seaward of the town. I did remember the runway was aligned approximately with the beach and, on a barrier island, this could result in a thermal sea breeze being a crosswind for an airplane trying to land. My flight was not challenged by this condition, the wind was light.
      Another thing I discovered from the map is that had I walked inland instead of towards the beach, I might have been able to walk into town. If it's really walking distance from the airport, that's a good feature of the island as a fly-in destination that I wasn't aware of. Have you walked this route?
      Blackbeard's ship, or its wreck, has been discovered and at least explored if not partially excavated. I read about this (it happened later than my trip) and that might have made me jump to the conclusion that the battle had happened near Silver Lake.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 2 месяца назад +1

      @@steventoby3768 One of Blackbeards ship, the Queen Ann's Revenge (probably his largest ship) was discovered near the Beaufort Inlet. It is still being salvaged. The Maritime Museum in Beaufort NC has a lot of the artifacts on display. Blackbeard did not have, nor was he on the Queen Annes Revenge when he was killed. He had 'scuttled' that ship when it became too much of a liability. It was later, when Blackbeard lived in Bath, NC that he was killed near the Ocracoke Inlet/Teach's channel; the channel bears his named because of his death there. He was on the 'Adventure' during his final battle with Lt Maynard's sloops.... The Ocracoke Airport is in easy walking distance from the airport. (but at my age, I prefer riding a bike, or driving my truck!) In fact Howards Pub is about half the way between the airport and the town; and Silver Lake, the harbor.

    Hi C&A! Stumbled across your channel because it popped up for me probably because I live on Ocracoke. Had to laugh a bit as you discovered the ying & yang of living with the NPS. While the park will never get built up, NPS always seems to have a long list of NO YOU CAN’T. Also laughed a bit at A pulling your rig though our tight streets. It’s a lot worse in the middle of the summer! Craziest rig I ever saw was a couple summers ago. A full size monster land yacht pulling a car pulling a boat! It was like an Aussie road train! Anyhow, we are a cool little sandbar out here in the Atlantic. You should slow down & hang out a while next time through.

    As in any place yall visit there is the tourist side and then their is the local side...Ocracoke , as long as they don't build a bridge can try and remain somewhat low keyed but the folks depend on people visiting. Not all but most. Hatteras Island sold it's soul years ago...The park service tells you when and where you can fish( and film) and the House's that have been built have just ruined the place.
    If you go Buxton. Stay at Tower Circle Motel... Go have a few beers at Pop's ..fish... talk to those who live there. Its a paradise but its not easy. ( catch a ride on one the boats they goes out and brings back fresh mullet Do that for a week and film that)

    I feel like you just blew through Ocracoke, maybe you stayed a little longer. Ocracoke is a place to savor as all of the outer banks. Meet some locals, learn the music scene, learn when each bar and restaurant has a special. One place will have music and 50 cent shrimp from 12-2, another from 2-4, another from 4-6, and so on. You can graze and dance the day away and not spend a fortune. Go kayaking on the sound, snorkel, swim, sun, and if you are lucky enough to be there to watch a full moon rise out of the water from your kayak while sipping some box wine…..what more can I say?

So you could probably do landscapes or sunrise/sunset. But of course it doesn't say anything about putting those into videos later.....

      We used to use Planet fitness while living in the van, prior to covid shutting them down. They have a lot of locations and are affordable, but they don’t have barbells if you’re into barbells. Most of my client that travel use the loop bands that are linked in the description. They are small enough to pack in your bag and take everywhere so you don’t need to rely on gyms. - Chris

      @@IreneIronTravels Of course it is. If not too many people go there why is it so crowded during the summer? It was getting crowded the beginning of June when we were there for 2 weeks. Why did they start a passenger-only ferry from Hatteras? Why do the car ferries from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter usually require making a reservation up to 90 days ahead of your trip? Well, for a Sat or Sun turn day reservation anyway. I can't wait until August comes and we go back and take the kids and grandsons.

      Yep, Okracote & the Outer Banks were our favorite vacation spots when we were young. We never had the money that you obviously have. We camped in a tent in beach campgrounds. Always had a marvelous time.
      On one occasion, we had just set up camp when a big RV parked next to us. They proceeded to raise a satellite dish and start up the generator for tv and ac just 20 feet away.
      Ruined our stay.
      If you can't do without all your creature comforts, get a hotel room, a rental house, or just stay at home.
      You are young, try doing without for a change.

    I cried when you got to Ocracoke, especially when you started walking and driving around. Ocracoke is so special to me as my family went there at least once a year every year when I was growing up. I have some wonderful memories of Ocracoke and sadly haven’t been in 11 yrs. I miss it so much. When I was a kid, it was less busy & even more enjoyable, but I would still love to go back in the next couple years. We live in southeastern NC, so it’s not as close as when we lived close to the swan quarter ferry back then. So sorry y’all had an issue while there. Hope it was resolved by the sheriffs dept.

  • @danrandall794
    @danrandall794 3 месяца назад +12

    Chris absolutely rocks all the time but holy smokes she nailed the ferry driving!!! Aaron great minds think alike. As I was watching I thought boy that reminds me of Bayfield and Madeline Island. No commercial filming is a terrible rule for small little productions. It is not like you filmed a feature film-jeez. Years ago Little Sand Bay Ranger station was the first low flush toilet I ever saw. It had a big sign above the toilet that said pay attention as you might have to flush twice. Now there is some water savings LOL. Little Sand Bay is about ten miles outside Bayfield. One more and then I will shut up. Also years ago Isle Royale was talking about closing the island to everyone other except backpackers that came on the ferry. That would mean no divers and no fisherman. Someone formed a group to lobby against them and it was discovered that 89 percent of all boat traffic was from the NPS to maintain the island. They also said they wanted to preserve the shipwrecks. Preserve for what? It is quite the chore to go dive them so very few dives happen. It was rare to see another dive boat. Sorry rant is over. Just drives me nuts when stupid rules have no reason to be there. In through the mouth and out through the nose. The grass is green and the birds are chirping. All better now.

    Hello hello Chris and Aaron!! Happy belated 4th of July to you two, and the pups!! Welcome to my old stomping grounds! We used to camp out on Ocracoke a lot, when I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC! It was mostly during our tent camping days; so we didn't have to deal with a trailer and the ferries. But, I will say, on our summer trips there, it could be so hot that we'd actually ride back and forth on the short ferry between Ocracoke and Hatteras just to get a breeze and cool off a bit. I'd also bring my flight time builder folks out there; it was part of an overall coastal NC flight. I'd usually culminate it with a stop up north for them to see the Wright Brother's Museum. I always loved landing at Ocracoke. Howard's Pub would send out a golf cart to pick us up so that we could get into town for some lunch and some walking around "downtown".
    Also, another memorable experience on Ocracoke was during the 4th of July. They'd have a really fun parade on that day. And....on the last float, they'd hand out beer (I have no clue if they still do that).
    The coast is about the only part of NC that I miss, being out in Colorado now.
    Go Chris!! That b some fancy drivin'!!!!
    Safe travels!!
    We are heading to Palm Springs this next week, for a week. The following week, we'll go to Tucson for almost a week.

      Your federal tax dollars don't support the North Carolina ferry system. Not that I know of, but who knows. I know I don't want to ride the ferry from Swan Quarter for 2 hours and 45 minutes while some outfit makes a music video with loud music and dancers and stuff. If they let one person do a commercial recording they will have to let everyone.
