Ocracoke - The Secret Island in the Outer Banks NC

- Some friends of mine have been going to this secret island in the Outer Banks NC every year for a very long time. The Outer Banks is nice but I was skeptical there was a place in the Outer Banks that warranted a trip every year. I decided it was time to check out the Outer Bank's secret island, Ocracoke Island.

Ocracoke, as a 21 to 24 year old stationed there I couldn't wait to get off the island, now in my 50's every time I have to leave I hate to! 🤣 Sssshhhh.... Too many people will find out!!
I seriously thought about not publishing this for that exact reason...in the end its a beautiful spot that deserves highlight. Most people won't want to deal with the ferry rides anyway. Thanks for watching.
Yes, you were probably there when the water smelled funny - lol- & way too late on your last comment, sadly the secret it out 😂😂😂
We live on Bogue Banks, another beautiful barrier island here on the SOBX, but Ocracoke is certainly very unique & remote, so nice it’s only a ferry ride away 😎😎😎
My family owned a house there from 1974 until 2021. Don't miss the storms, the ferry closures.
I imagine a ferry closure would feel very erie and isolated. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Love Ocracoke! My family took a vacation there back in the late 70's and I'll never forget it. The quiet and beautiful beaches...the great family businesses and restaurants and the history! I remember eating at one restaurant that offered a plateful of broiled scallops with melted butter...Yum!
I'm not sure what it looked like back then but I doubt its changed to incredibly much. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I lived in NC for 10 years and visited Ocracoke two times. Beautiful place. Loved the atmosphere. Like living in a different world.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Might be the best video about Ocracoke I’ve seen and I’ve been going there for over 35 years. Thanks for the time it took to capture it all!
Thank You so much. I really appreciate that.
I have been here. I was stationed at Ft. Bragg, between 1973-76, and had just bought a Huffy 10 speed. I took a two week leave and pedaled out to Morehead City (I think), then a ferry to the island. Met some wonderful people camped near me, and had a much needed and peaceful vacation leave time away from the rigors of training at Ft. Bragg. I currently live in my home state of Oregon. Great memory!
Have you ever been back? I wonder what the differences look like from then until now. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@MikeWilley No, I have not. I grew up on the Oregon Coast and lived in Taiwan for a time, so the ocean has always been a big part of my life. That bike ride has become a fond memory, and yes, I would love to go back with my wife and show her.
My little sister got a Huffy 10-speed for X-mas around that very same time!
I wish it would always be as it was when I was there 30 years ago and never gets crowded. I will always respect the beauty and the atmosphere of Ocracoke Is.
Its a pretty special place. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love all of the OBX, but Ocracoke has always had my heart. I’ll be taking my fam for the first time this year.
Its a pretty special spot. They're going to love it. Thanks for watching.
I love Ocracoke, born and raised in NC , been going to Ocracoke for years and I love the peaceful atmosphere on the beach and the atmosphere of the night life is absolutely amazing
Thanks for watching and commenting Cindy.
Thanks for briefly showing the British War Graves, Mike. A very historical site. I’m a musician with the U.S. Coast Guard Pipe Band and we perform at British War Grave memorial ceremonies at Buxton and Ocracoke each May. Thank you for a great video!!
I played solo acoustic at Howard's, Jolly Roger, and the Pelican (now Dajio)
Thats super awesome. I love live music.
What a gorgeous and mesmerizing video! Excellent work
Incredible feedback. I really appreciate the comment. Feedback like this keeps me making content.
Take the ferry in Hatteras, in about 6 foot water, and visit it and get some ice cream, also it floods really bad there
Thats the way we usually go. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for your beautiful and excellent video! My wife and I are spending a week on Ocracoke this April-can’t wait!
Should be some good fishing. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Started going there every summer about 30 years ago, they had the wild horses and pony island motel. Loved it!
Thanks for watching.
Great video! We hope to visit Ocracoke this year. Looks so beautiful, quiet and peaceful❤. Thank you for sharing
It really is! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I thought everyone knew about Ocracoke. At least they all do in southeastern Virginia where I live. I have vacationed there several times. Love it!
I'd say 99.9% of the country have no idea Ocracoke exists. The minute people realize how hard it is to get there, they've checked out. For those of us trying to escape the crowds....perfection. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely LOVED this video!
Thank you!! I really appreciate the feedback. I loved making this one.
Tremendous video, well shot, edited and narrated. My wife and I, and our sons have been to the Outer Banks several times but have yet to go to this amazing island. I would move to Ocracoke tomorrow if my family was on board, but only a vacation there is going to happen. I agree, Ocracoke like my '05 Jeep TJ Rocky Mtn isn't for everyone. I love that Ocracoke doesn't have crowds, has a leisurely pace and is perfect for how I like life. I lived on the Maine coast and the welcome sign reads, Maine the way life should be. I agree with that from Memorial to Labor Day. A little older now and much prefer late spring, summer and early fall. Looking forward to beach wheelin, surf fishing and beach camping with the family in Ocracoke this summer.
🏖🏝😎🌊🐟🎣🐠
We'll be headed back this summer as well. Thanks for watching and contributing TJ.
Ocracoke is no secret. I have been there many times. It is one of my favorite places to visit.
Its a beautiful place. Thanks for commenting.
If you ever go to Ocracoke again, you should try parasailing, it is very fun and it is peaceful up in the sky looking at the beautiful scenery. Nice video btw!
Going in two weeks actually. We tried parasailing last year but it was too windy. Optimistic about this trip. Thanks for the suggestion and I appreciate you watching.
I grew up in NC as a kid and used to visit with family.
Thanks for watching and commenting Maurice
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you so much Danielle
Awesome video, nicely done.. thank you
Thanks for the support and feedback Jacob TJ
incredible video! thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching. Your support means a lot.
They are definitely on island time, been there a few times….love driving the beach 4x4 and fishing
Totally agree! It was incredibly windy during this trip but I'm hopeful for a little better conditions on the beach this year.
Man, that was a really good video. Nice work!
Thanks for the support
Looks like you took the hour-long ferry from Hatteras Island. There are 2 more on that depart/arrive on the south side of the island (in town). One to Cedar Island and One to Swan Quarter. 2.5 hours and both are relaxing. You might even see an incredible sunset if you take the late ferry from Cedar Island. In the last few years they started up the high-speed passenger ferry service. To and from Hatteras Island, Cedar Island and Swan Quarter. I guess you could call a lot of this a 'local' secret.
I know areas don't seem like such a "secret" to the locals. I live in a resort area has the same issue. Ocracoke is still a secret because although its getting busier, it is still quiet and peaceful. Those places are often hard to find and hard to get too.
We were told the one gas station was not always open, no problem . Finding a room to stay over night was a problem . like going to another dimension in time
lol, finding a hotel at all would be hard to do. Theres some bed and breakfast spots but not much else. I think there is a small hotel or two but i'm sure they're always full.
Nice Video and narration
Thanks a lot I appreciate the support.
Awesome video, taking my gf and family from India (fist time in the US) to Ocracoke over the holiday weekend! Third time watching this video!
Let me know what you thought of Ocracoke in person. Did my video do it justice?
Ocracoke is experiencing heavy washouts right now. the ferry is closed, NC12 is becoming impassible. When i First started fishing the coast 3 years ago. I remember going to ramp 27 in Hatteras and having at least 150 feet of beach to walk across. now the waves hit the dunes at high tide. I'm glad I got to experience the original OBX before the main bridge got finished over Oregon inlet. Just natural habits of barrier islands. I pray for those who had homes out there. but the new development is just insane. id never build on the island itself. maybe the sound side. Ocracoke is a magical place for fishermen and fisherwoman alike. its solitude from the average beach experience and im glad its been that way. the locals even have their own accent
I saw that on the news. You kind of get the idea things can get bad quick when you visit even in good weather. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the support.
Excellent I’ve been there
Thanks for watching and commenting Gee
3:18 thats the best time for the beach TIDAL POOLS !
Good point. Thanks for watching and commenting.
We loved our trips there. That we are highly unlikely to go back is heartbreaking. Silver Lake Inn is the place.
I doubt we'll be back at least for a while but nothing but good memories.
The very fact Blackbeard had his final fight here makes it worth visiting once in your lifetime
I agree. By the way, I have a couple of videos coming up I think you'll really like. Thanks for the support.
Landed at their small airport and really enjoyed the visit. The morning we left , millions of mosquitos waited for my wife and I. Flying home to Florida, we killed over a hundred mosquitos that got into the cockpit while the door was open. Sadly, that’s what I remember most
Mosquitos or not, thats a pretty awesome trip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Not a secret now. Thanks Geeze dude. Kidding. Awesome video
It takes work to get there so hopefully that will help. Thanks for watching.
We’ve gone to Baldhead for 25 years. Looks like we need try this island out as well.
Baldhead huh....I see how it is. j/k Its a wonderful place.
So weird.I went there 45 years ago.What a trip.What a insane experience I had.I even stayed in a hotel overnight.What an insane island.
Time to go back....just saying. Thanks for watching.
Sounds like you are saying Ocracroke.
...
went there a few times last time i went the one grocery store didn’t have any produce that wasn’t rotten or expired
That sucks especially since its like you said, the one store. In my experience they definitely have fruits and veggies that are more ripe than a lot of people may be used to probably because they don't want to throw it away but I've never really witnessed anything moldy and rotten. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Took my wife last year, it was her first time, she loved it, need to go back, be in coralla in a couple weeks, maybe we'll make another lighthouse run
Love some cool Lighthouses. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Going to Outer Banks here in a couple weeks by car from Pennsylvania, and this is the first video I've seen on the island, and I'm sold.
You'll love it, its amazing. Thanks for watching, have an awesome time. We'll be down there in a couple weeks as well (from Delaware).
Looks like what Nantucket use to be like 40 years ago.
Thanks for watching.
It's OCRACOKE, not OCRA-CROAK!damn get it right!!
Gotta love people like this...lol
Here Here! 😁😍 he"s a Yankee...
@@MikeWilley Seriously, though, Mike, was he/she correct? Were you mispronouncing the name, or do they change the "r"s around when they speak the name aloud?
Hoy toyed on a sound soyed y’all
Thanks for watching
Born and raised in N.C. love all of our beaches but there's something special about Ocracoke !!just hope it doesn't turn in to what the rest of N.C. is turning into, it makes me sad to see most of the little smaller towns turned into big city's with so many people!!!
It can definitely feel busy at times like during peak season and going to dinner. It still holds on to its charm. Thanks for watching.
Was the ferry a smooth ride? I get seasick, so nervous
Its always been fairly smooth when I've been on it but I've heard stories where it can be pretty bumpy during stormy weather. Thanks for the comment.
Hush. Ocracoke is terrible. No one should ever go there. Nothing to do. People are mean. Beaches ugly. Stay away. Every time I have ever been there, every year since 2000, dreadful experience. Also, he failed to mention Springers Point, the Pony Pens, Smack’Nallys, the charter boats, the Parasailing, Portsmouth, Howard Street, Deepwater Theater, Books to be Red, Flying Melon. Awful, every one of them. My wife is dragging me back there on Friday. Maybe I will survive.
Smack'Nalleys is a wonderful spot. I couldn't mention everything in the video, I had to save some for this years visit..... Thanks for commenting Scott
Couldn't believe their restaurant didn't have fresh seafood, frozen shrimp,
What house was it you were staying in I think that’s the house we rented this coming trip?
We've stayed at several but on this trip we were over towards Springers Point
Wow i live there such a lovely place i live across from pirates chest😂
Pirates Chest is a pretty awesome store. Thanks for watching.
@@MikeWilley yes it isss and i go at the end if summer sale its the best deal!!! Also u get 15% off if u brong in a local so if you know any locals get them to come with u🤫🤫
@@Theiconicyuna What does the local get for coming in with the tourist?
Okra-Coke
Thanks Laurie, I definitely struggle with it...lol
Nobody knows about it but the line for the ferry is 4 miles long 🤦♂️
The line is crazy. You need to be there in line early. We got on the 2nd ferry on this trip. Good point Jeff. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@MikeWilley yea I’ve been there 6 times now. June will be the 7th. Used to always go visit the island but it’s become nothing but a pain anymore. Too crowded. Ferry trips takes half a day.. etc I still love the obx tho
Best town ever.
Thanks for watching Lady Jane
You can go there by plane and ferry
A very small plane but they absolutely have a small airport. Now I just need a plane..... Thanks for watching.
kooks or books?
Books To Be Red
Are permits required for driving on the beach and is the ferry ride free?
The ferry ride is free however you do need a drive on permit for the beach. The permit is super easy to get right online. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Permits were around 50 bucks for 10days….definitely air down to at least 15psi some beaches sand is more sugar like. The beach driving and fishing is always fun for us.
Not all the ferry’s are free, I know the cedar island ferry charges somewhere around $15 a vehicle. $1 if you board on foot
The ferry from and to Hatteras is free. There is a charge from Cedar Island or Swan quarter. We have taken our travel trailer to the NPS campground many times and there was a $90 round trip charge. Totally worth it!
You seem to be saying "OcracRoke".
ok...
Hey my cousin is in the video 😂
Seriously? Local or visiting?
Secret? LOL
Ocracoke is still a secret because although its getting busier, it is still quiet and peaceful. Those places are often hard to find and hard to get too.
Awesome video I’d love to go but having a mixed family and not seeing any diversity I wouldn’t want to expose my son to any negative. How accepting is the island.
Theres people there from all over the world. The whole community seemed pretty accepting of everyone. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
I know it because Blackbeard met his end there
Springers Point. I have a video coming up documenting it.
@@MikeWilley I just subscribed to you and will be on the lookout for that video! Thanks.
Why does he keep saying Ocracroke?
Because thats what the video is about 🤷🏻♂️
At least he didn’t say Corncrake
@@MikeWilley It's Ocracoke not Ocracroke.
golf cart is a vehicle
Amen to that. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Get it right: It is NOT pronounced OcracRoke It is OcracOke
lol.....what do you so to people like this Have a good day Curt.
Too expensive now to stay for a week.
It is getting a little outrageous. Thanks for watching.
outer*
...
Please call it Ocracoke, not Ocracroke.
I struggle with it for some reason...lol. Thanks for watching.
No longer a secret
Most people won't want to fight the ferry crowds. Thanks for watching.
Is it diverse?
It was when we were there. There were people from all over the world
Thing is ....NC has some beautiful places, but it's sort of like tourism in Nazi General. Grops like Amnestty International has call NC a pseudo democracy, like a people's repyublic. I don't want to give money or support to fascist and insurgents, so I boycott, and urge other to boycott, this unfortunate place.
Chang, way over the top on this man. Its a beautiful state. Don't let paranoia steal your life. Life is way to short. Enjoy your life, travel, and explore. Thanks for watching.
You have unfortunately been brainwashed by the MSM.
Are you OK? Help is a phone call away
Definitely Adolph Hitler's perfect getaway ~ PLEASE STAY AWAY FOREVER !! LOL !
