You honestly make the best Metro Lore videos. I mean who else would actually go to the effort to find out about that mutagenic compound and how it could have affected the spiders? Well done
Whoever animates the Spiderbugs deserves a raise. They move so freakishly naturally that even catching a glimpse of one makes me shiver when playing Last Light. Even with just four main legs, they captured the movement of a spider so well that I find it hard sometimes to keep my arachnophobia in check. Their sound and AI designers also deserve praise, of course; the increasing volumn of those horrible, scuttling legs as they move closer combined with their ability to retreat and wait for another chance to attack make them amazing survival-horror enemies.
The tail being a pincer would probably also be used to make it easier to drag bodies around and back to the nest, which would obviously be the males job anyways. Think catchpole.
I love your theories about these creatures and why they have certain traits. It really makes the game feel 10X more immersive and believable. Makes me want to go play metro over and over again just for the creatures.
Ayyy Thats great to hear! I love coming up with these to give them a possible realistic basis, but you should play it again! moreso with exodus on the horizon! glad you enjoyed the video bro and I will keep them going as long as there are creatures and theories to cover!
@@RoanokeGaming I also have a little bit of a theory that the type of arachnid these may have descended from might be from the order of Opiliones, i came to this conclusion as they have no venom glands and their overall shape of their body (especially their Anterior cephalothorax) suggests that at least in the males previous generations might have not had a segmented abdominal section, although, we are talking about mutations in a game so basically anything is possible hah.
The reason suggested for their weakness to light is somewhat jossed by Exodus. Spiderbugs are found as far away as the Caspian Sea and the Taiga. There are no Nosalises or any obvious source of mutagens found in those locations yet they still burn, suggesting that their weakness is inherited rather than due to their diet/environment.
Well, obviously they're afflicted with severe phototoxicity. It could happen for any number of whacky reasons, however that paired with nuclear radiation. I'm sure it can be reasonably said that it makes what is already whacky, many times more whacky.
The spiders in the metro series, above all else, demonstrate the brilliant atmosphere of this series. The Spider Lair dlc level from Last Light is my favorite level in any game i have ever played. I think my favorite part about your channel is your approach. Most content creators who do this kind of thing point out all the reasons stuff like this would never happen or exist. Instead, you look at it and go "what IRL conditions could allow this to happen" and try to explain it.
The theory about the spread of the contamination couldnt have happened by the ground water, since have been 20 years since the bombs-fall event and the ground water really takes a lot of years to move something in the scale of hundred meters. So i believe that the time for contaminant to spread + the time to the mutations occour may take more than 20 years. Another thing to be considered is the nature of the contaminant, since that is an organic complex, it tends to be really a really light-weight molecule, making its transport to occour really close to the top of the body water, not letting it go too far down, creating one morr difficulty to hit and modify the normal animals. Thats what i have learned in my bachaelor in geology.

Completely agree with the food chain trickle effect. But i would argue that they are crustations, not arachnids. . . With, somehow, mammalian features (primitive lungs, warm blooded, elastic skin). It would explain the lack of venom, the body shape (body shape looks more insectoid with 3 parts, numerous crustations have a 'head' section [not a true head obviously, but a segment that vaguely replicates the ability to 'turn its head'] whereas arachnids do not). The pedipalps, although more stereotypically associated with arachnids, belong to crustaceans aswell (altho called something different, cant remember off the top of my head). The jaw structure is considerably more 'crab-like' than an arachnid (outer mandibles become lower 'fangs', inner mandibles become ancillary 'teeth'). Im picturing a coconut crab evolving to fill a burrowing mammals niche, except the loss of those enormous pincers would be to much of an evolutionary loss, so something built more like a crayfish/prawn? Loss of limbs could easily be explained via food source changing and the need for 3d maneuverability in cramped spaces (no point having 6 extra limbs burning energy when the mammals its attempting to emmulate can do it with only 4). @@RoanokeGaming My pleasure man and I do agree on that part, alien has been done quite a handful lol. But as for the predator, I do have a couple game suggestions where you can get a good look at them. One game is Aliens vs Predator (2010) and the other game is Predator: Concrete Jungle. It's just that Predator Concrete Jungle is an old game (2005) that was for the orginal xbox and playstation 2. But the graphics on the predator itself were actually kind of detailed and exceptional for it's time, suprisingly lol.
@@RoanokeGaming If you do decide to do the Predator, I'll mention that there are now three types of predators: normal predators, super predators (Predators 2010 movie), and upgraded predators (The Predator 2018 movie). The predator lore has always been kind of mysterious in a few aspects. Like their homeworld and how they came to be lol. I'll also be more than glad to offer more info if you need it.
The spider and scorpion bugs were actually pretty fun to kill. You just run up to them and shine your light on them. They’ll try to run but keep running after them with your light pointed at them, and they just turn over and die lol. No bullets needed. It was fun.
Someone with arachnophobia can't even look at them. Even tho they are extreme easy to kill. My skin felt crawling after the caspian bunker and taiga tunnel mission in exodus. Librarians and the blind ones are just little puppies to me compared to spiderbugs
ITS A GOOD DAY TO POOP WHEN A NEW ROANOKE VIDEO COMES OUT RIGHT AS YOU SAT DOWN. Thanks for your work bro. I like your fun and insightful videos of all the things I have destroyed with various weapons.
Am i the only one whos favorite enemy is the spiders? I really like the fact that they do what i do to humans. Avoid light, attack from the dark while im not looking (and die if the attack was unsuccesfull)
Got me to play metro again! And it was well worth it! I love your vids and love how you put your education to explain creatures in depth. Keep up the great work!
Love the vid but wasnt there some book or note that claimed back in the day when the Russians were digging secret tunnels that there was already some made by something else? Im not too sure but great vid anyway. 😀
I know you probably won’t see this, but I just watched the video and I think the sand lion might be a viable option for the core mutation host. The tails on the males look exactly the same, the method they hunt matches, their domains are the same, as is the habit of venturing out and dragging prey back in. I’ll admit I can’t explain the webbing but it might be worth some consideration. Awesome videos man
I remember once when I was playing Metro Last Light, i was exploring spider caves looking for ammo.. when I found myself in a cavern of severed human remains hanging from the ceiling by cobwebs. I was like, 'hang on a minute... Yep. I need therapy, now'.
Just started playing dead space 2 and honestly, it's kinda terrifying, then again I'm jumpy. The ONLY reason I considered even playing the damn game was due to watching your dead space videos, (I found them through Xperia's Chanel on the flood vs necomorphs collaboration) and I have to say, your analysis is spot on for every necromorph that I have come across so far. I'm going to finish off with a recommendation/request, could you cover the fallout series of games, I think you're well aware of the many different creatures that populate the waste. Keep up the fantastic videos my friend -T
Thank you for the compliments bro! I do plan on covering fallout in the future, and Dead space is BAE, long before I made this channel I always tried to figure out what made them tick or where they may have come from, glad you are enjoying it!
I think these spiders may have mutated from Pholcidae or more commonly know as daddy longlegs spiders or cellar spiders which can be found in Russia (all over the world in fact) because the Metro Last Light spiders appear to have stingers instead of tails. As we (or I) know daddy longlegs are not spiders but are distantly related groups of arthropods: harvestmen (which are arachnids but not spiders) and in fact this group is more closly related to scorpions than spiders. Which would expain both why they were living underground and why the males apear to have these tails. Also my theory to support is that due to the need to handle bigger prey the metro spiders had thier excess leg evolve into extra mandibles to help the chop their prey with more ease also daddy longlegs can live with just four or even three legs. Well I am not a expert on spiders or anything but I have studied the daddy longlegs because I have a lot of them around my storage area and wanted to know more about them.
Awesome.... nightmare fuel..... Great vid! Loved it, spiders notwithstanding. Now, here is an idea for a future video! The "Infested" in Warframe. They have a ton of cool traits, from talking over biological and mechanical systems, it can also be used as weapons (guns, swords, etc.) I would love to see a vid on them!
I have heard alot of the infested, still playing the game trying to actually get to them haha but something I could definitely do in the future, in the mean time glad you enjoyed it!
Now that we have exodus, considering how far away these photosensitive spiders seemed to have traveled and set up nests, I'd say it's probably more likely something genetic than just a chemical in the ground. Mutations are random after all, they're not guaranteed to be good, especially when that mutation usually doesn't make a difference to them so deep underground
fought these things in Metro 2033 in my first ever playthrough. Low ammo, no filters, lots of spiders and no lover for them. Looking back, i though it them catching fire was just a side effect of the railgun. i noticed they feared light but this video explains a LOT about how i managed to survive.
i know these are old posts but ive been binging your vids and i straight up bought the metro games just so i could understand the context of these videos haha
I remember whenever I came across these guys I would say: “OHHH! THE SPOIDERS!” I always wondered what process was at play that caused the spiders to burn up when exposed to light
I actually really like spiders with the exception of garden spiders, but that's only because I had the stupid idea to feed one a grasshopper when I was a little kid. (It wasn't actually a very scary experience, It just freaked me out how fast it ate the grasshopper)
I think it's a combination of both pre-existing and created creatures, as in the Metro books there are a number of references to pre-war Metro workers going missing in the deeper parts of the tunnels under mysterious circumstances. So it's not hard to imagine that the devs created the spider-bugs to represent these beings that existed under Moscow and hunted the Metro workers. So perhaps these creatures existed in some form before the war and survived the devastation deep under the ground I their new state thanks to the additional resilience the Russian Gov't's experiments gave them.
@@RoanokeGaming no probs dude am really interested in this stuff I'm watching the dead space stuff and am amazed at the effort you put into them can't wait for your next video😁

@@RoanokeGaming
If you do decide to do the Predator, I'll mention that there are now three types of predators: normal predators, super predators (Predators 2010 movie), and upgraded predators (The Predator 2018 movie). Just thought I should let you know that part just in case you do consider lol. Really hope to see a Predator morphology/anatomy video.
Hope we see them in Exodus
I dont want to see them...but I also kind of do haha
@@RoanokeGaming XD I'm so hyped for this game!
Me too
Indigo Lad What? Noooooo they were the only reason I never beat the first game I couldn’t bring myself to even play past that
Steven Patrick there werent in metro 2033 but in last light
ITS A GOOD DAY TO POOP WHEN A NEW ROANOKE VIDEO COMES OUT RIGHT AS YOU SAT DOWN. Thanks for your work bro. I like your fun and insightful videos of all the things I have destroyed with various weapons.
and excellent time to poop! and absolutely bro, glad you are enjoying the videos
Am i the only one whos favorite enemy is the spiders? I really like the fact that they do what i do to humans. Avoid light, attack from the dark while im not looking (and die if the attack was unsuccesfull)
good to see another upload from yourself!
Thank you Raonoke Gaming, very cool.
thanks my guy! glad you enjoyed it!
Makes sense to me.
Good job
glad it holds water my dude! and thank you for the compliment!
Man you go in deep for that lore, it’s great!
Glad you enjoy the videos bro!
Oh no more spiders! We better need bigger newspapers! 😱😱😱😱😱😱
BIGGER BOOT
Nah just punch them in the wall
Naw screw that! use a hammer instead or any melee weapon
Got me to play metro again! And it was well worth it! I love your vids and love how you put your education to explain creatures in depth. Keep up the great work!
hell ya bro! Metro is excellent! and I am glad to hear that you are enjoying them!
Love the vid but wasnt there some book or note that claimed back in the day when the Russians were digging secret tunnels that there was already some made by something else? Im not too sure but great vid anyway. 😀
they did mention that the tunnels were there but they had no idea what actually made them! glad you enjoyed it bro!
Your theory on their extreme photophobia makes so much sense! Perfect, makes so much sense to me!
Glad you thought so as well!
I had to make my brother play this level 2 years ago when I had this game on the Xbox 360 because I had and still have severe Arachnophobia.
what were your results?
I know you probably won’t see this, but I just watched the video and I think the sand lion might be a viable option for the core mutation host. The tails on the males look exactly the same, the method they hunt matches, their domains are the same, as is the habit of venturing out and dragging prey back in. I’ll admit I can’t explain the webbing but it might be worth some consideration. Awesome videos man
Watching this in bed about to go sleep and ik theres shit load(4or5) of spiders in my room....... great
Well just remember, youre more likely to eat them than them bite you!
Always happy to see a new metro creature vid thanks🤙🏾🤙🏾
hope you enjoyed it bro!
Should do a lore on the metro ghosts
I will be doing those in the future my dude!
I remember once when I was playing Metro Last Light, i was exploring spider caves looking for ammo.. when I found myself in a cavern of severed human remains hanging from the ceiling by cobwebs. I was like, 'hang on a minute... Yep. I need therapy, now'.
*Rest in Peace; the legend; Stan Lee !*
Truly a loss, I will miss him
oh no, i cant read his comic on webtoons now ;_; rip
Good riddance.

Keep up the fantastic videos my friend
-T
Thank you for the compliments bro! I do plan on covering fallout in the future, and Dead space is BAE, long before I made this channel I always tried to figure out what made them tick or where they may have come from, glad you are enjoying it!
Play outlast 1
I gotta admit these videos really answer my question with high quality
Excellent! thats what I have set out for!
Well I am not a expert on spiders or anything but I have studied the daddy longlegs because I have a lot of them around my storage area and wanted to know more about them.
an interesting point! that could honestly be the case as well considering what is living in the area
This game series are a total masterpiece. Thank you @Roanokegaming
Agreed! I love the games, and am looking forward to exodus, I am just glad you all are enjoying it!
@@RoanokeGaming Same here. So stoked for Exodus. Just waiting patiently. But yeah, also enjoying your content man. Keep it up. Big fan.

I don't remember the spider part in either metro
in the DLC named Spider Lair!
@@RoanokeGaming wait there is a dlc for metro
Serge yes there are like 3, that each have like 3 to 4 missions in them. Some of the missions are really good and some are ok.
@@fallstaff1517 I have xbox so that's why
Maybe it was too traumatic your mind vaulted the memory lmao
never clicked a vid so fast, always look forward to these kek vids
Glad you are liking them bro!
I'd assume that they're sensitive to light because they usually stay in darkness.
very true! but burning? seems like something more is going on there as they arnt albino
@@RoanokeGaming I kinda figure the burning was just a bit of a side effect of the mutation they went through
Yaaaay new Roanoke video
hope you liked it man!
Evolve creatures next? Pls.
redownloaded evolve, might need to see if I can get some friends together to actually play it

I remember playing on ranger mode in that level. I immediately uninstalled the game upon completion
How many times did you die??
Roanoke Gaming can't remember exactly, but i did spend an hour and half on it and most of the deaths are by my own firebomb
Awesome.... nightmare fuel.....
This is disproven since the spiders appear in Metro Exodus and it takes place far from D6 but still nice theory with the given info at the time.
From a design perspective making you STARE at the fuckers know they are one of the scariest things imagined is pure genius.
Note to self: HOLY CRAP!
Also: Spider + Scorpion? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!
fought these things in Metro 2033 in my first ever playthrough.
Thoughtful and well explored. Thanks for the KNOWLEDGE :^)
Your theory is riddled with so many holes I am at a loss for words.
Whats your hypothesis?
I remember whenever I came across these guys I would say: “OHHH! THE SPOIDERS!”
I always wondered what process was at play that caused the spiders to burn up when exposed to light
OH GOD SPOODERS
I actually really like spiders with the exception of garden spiders, but that's only because I had the stupid idea to feed one a grasshopper when I was a little kid. (It wasn't actually a very scary experience, It just freaked me out how fast it ate the grasshopper)
Those spiders always creeped me out in Last Light!
same!
I respect the effort you put in. 👌
I have become addicted to these videos. A Virgo's curse i guess but its also a gift.
Sounds good to me! Glad you are enjoying them bro!
I love your videos, you are very talented in making games feel even better.
I appreciate the compliment bro! thank you!
@@RoanokeGaming No worries, I really enjoy your content
I've been yelling "May the Power of Christ Compel you" whenever I'd encounter these spiders lol.
The Last Light spider mission in the end is like:
"Finally, I'm on the surface.... Oh fuck, I'm on the surface"
Great work as always dude
Thanks bro! and thank you for the compliment!
@@RoanokeGaming no probs dude am really interested in this stuff I'm watching the dead space stuff and am amazed at the effort you put into them can't wait for your next video😁
