As a sylvari main, the OG Fear not this Night is the Mother Tree's encouragement to her children, but this version is more like the Nightmare Court's version and I love them both.
yeah, some may say it seems kinda like an evil version but i see it as more of an 'i embrace the darkness, to protect those trapped in it' kinda theme.
This voice omg Still kinda sad that Soule doesn't do the OST anymore but the game 's OST has gotten better and better with each release. Diemer is one of the most underrated OST makers
Soule is a creep and with the exceptions of the big hymns, all of his other tracks sound the same. I wish they'd replace core Tyria's themes with something actually interesting to listen to, with personality and dynamic melodies. And on the plus side they wouldn't be made by a sex pest.
I can confidently say that both these songs are amazing, but in their own way. The original will always be a lullaby to me, and will always be one of my favorite songs ever. But this one, this has the feeling of the Commander singing it. And I don't know why. It's got the strength, the solemn sadness, and the unbridled rage in the voice, but let out through song. As if the night before war, the Commander is remembering his mother's lullaby, he sings it again, but this time, with the ferocity of war in his tone. That is how I see it, and thus, I like them both.
/cry I would loooove to apply this except for the (admittedly tiny) roadblock of not playing male sylvari, and def not as a main character....oh well, I use this application anyway. :P
Tiffany Smith It doesn’t have to be just a male sylvari, other races may have heard the song, and I mean, the main theme of Guild Wars 2 is unity, so why wouldn’t others use it.
@@tiffanysmith490 Every commander eventually meets the pale tree and hears the song. Regardless of race. Every commander also gets pulled into the dream alongside Trahearne (when you are shown where the heart of Orr is). While in that version of the dream, you can hear the instrumental very very softly in the background. I actually hear it best DURING the combat, like it gets louder while combat happens but it is still very much just at the edge of hearing.
This is such a wonderful look at it, and one I'm definitely subscribing to from now on. Your starting race or gender don't even matter for this to work, as the pale tree becomes somewhat of a mother figure to us regardless of the path that we choose.
I'm not happy to see Jeremy Soule go, but with creations like the HoT Main Theme, Lion's Arch Reborn, and now this, Maclaine Diemer has definitely earned the right to succeed him.
Don't forget Shadow of the Dragon, Slothasor, Matthias Gabrel, and The White Mantle theme. He's made a ton of really good underrated tracks. Frankly GW2 just didn't mesh well with Soule's style of music imo.
I love maclaines work. It feels so much more diverse and fresher than what jeremy soule does. Yes, theres the grand, epic songs but there is also the silverwastes or the itzel theme. I love that one. And of course, best of all... the ballad of mad king thorn!
When you think about it, the Commander's story is one filled with pain, sorrow, and agony. A lullaby from hope to now a grim and darker version, only makes it seem that they are at their wits end, barely pulling through each challenge. With the female vocal heard in the background, its as if you (The Commander) tries to grasp on to the first song. There is a slight shift with a higher tone, so as 1:40 runs around it feels that the Commander is getting back into that groove, filled with determination, indignation, and hope. When you hear "Who needs the light?" In a way it is implied that the Commander IS the Light, hence no fear of the Night.
Yeah, when you think of it - Commander kinda lost much, much more then he gained while saving Tyria from Dragons. Literally every second of his missions blows in his face with suffering and he confronts most twisted and cruel beings in the world (Like Joko and his "rise the father's corpse to kill the family" philosophy.)
If the commander is the light, this kind of feels like her enemies telling her that the world doesn't need her. like the past few episodes showing how she might have caused a lot of problems by killing dragons; but 1:40 shows that she persists anyway knowing that she will make things right.
If I remember correctly, "Fear Not This Night" is intended to be a lullaby from the Pale Tree (through its Avatar?) to her children, the sylvari, as they stumble through this new thing called life. Because of Living World 2, you can see its validity even more. (I'm not saying your idea of it being the anthem of the Pact Commander is wrong, just pointing out what it was originally intended for when the game came out in 2012.) Also, I wish each expansion had been gifted an original song of their own beyond the character choice screen and ambient music; having just "Fear Not This Night" is nice but it loses its impact over time because you only hear it the one time in the game. (Even this twisted version is never heard- it's only used in an off-game trailer!)
Paradox_larakroft If the Commander is the villain, then I have a theory that I've been sitting on for about three years- Aurene is going to become a new seventh Elder Dragon, with her own army and everything! When Anet decides to hang up its hat on this game, _she_ will be the last Elder Dragon we face off against.
Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though shadows fall, Still the stars find their way. Awaken from a quiet sleep Hear the whispering of the wind. Awaken as the silence grows In the solitude of the night. Darkness spreads throughout the land And your weary eyes open silently. Sunsets have forsaken all The most far off horizons. Nightmares come when shadows grow. Eyes close and heartbeats slow. Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though shadows fall, Still the stars find their way. Fear not this night. You will not go astray. Though shadows fall, Still the stars find their way. (Find their way) Who needs the light? Fear not this night.
I really need to tell Maclaine again how excited I am that he's working with Cyan Worlds now. One of my favorite composers with one of my favorite game companies.
This version started playing right after I finished listening to the original... wow, talk about a different message altogether. The first played in hope at a new dawn after the fall of Zhaitan, the other a rallying call in the despair of Kralkatorikk's storm.
I come back to this now because of the direction the Living World has gone recently. Without spoiling anything, I can't stop listnening to this and think of the things that just happened in the story. The song is more fitting and scary to me right now than it has ever been.

I'm a massive nerd for military history, so it's an absolute treat to see all of Tyria slowly descend into the chaos of an all-encompassing war for survival. I almost stopped playing at some points because the story of the main game is kind of "meh" from where I'm sitting, but the invasion of Orr started getting me actually interested. Heart of Thorns, while I hate navigating it, I love because it feels like a frantic scramble to salvage a military operation gone horribly wrong. The assault on Joko's fortress, battling Balthazar atop that massive pyramid, bringing Kralkatorrik, Drizzlewood Coast - really the entirety of Icebrood Saga and Champions so far, feels much more like the entire world is readying for an apocalyptic conflict yet to come. Seeing the Commander actually command is great, seeing Braham be less of a little shit is great, et cetera. Even the feeling after things are over - when you finish off Zhaitan, it's just "yay, triumph!" But when you kill Mordremoth, there's this hollow feeling that, after all you suffered through, all the people you've watched die, having to kill the Pact Marshal, this isn't a victory. It's a stalemate that slightly favors you at best. On top of that, the Commander isn't doing everything, and I love that the other characters are developing and make their own decisions instead of just going along with whatever you do And on top of all of this, the way Jormag is portrayed as a manipulator instead of just the overt destructive force of nature Kralk and Mordremoth were, on top of having a massive army - that's a good villain, when in hindsight you realize you've been dancing to their tune for some time without ever knowing it. The best comparison I can make is the story's going down a road I really wish games like Skyrim or Kingdom Come Deliverance did instead of just momentarily getting sidetracked by a "war" that's barely more than a little skirmish or two here and there.
@@mattaffenit9898 It's very subjective and people appreciate different things for different reasons. But I agree with everything you said. There is so much to appreciate about the story.
The original Fear Not This Night is supposed to be the Pale Tree singing to the sylvari, so i always saw this cover as if Joko was mocking her, and her affection for the sylvari, which is why the "Who needs the light" line is added
I personally always thought that the singer was either a sylvari commander or a male sylvari soldier that has grown bitter and tired from all of the things they have seen.
Its easy to forget that the Sylvari are super young compared to the other races and the Sylvari commander in particular was thrown to the wolves damn near immediately. I will never not like this song. Especially love the play with the background vocals. And generally having a darker version of this song. Edit: I fucking hope there will be just as many covers for this version as we had them for the original.
Never having played GW2 much. I can say my take on these two songs is the singer singing about where they draw their power. The original. It's all about Hope. The Dawn. Fear not this night, for it will not last. The second? It's all about acceptance. Don't fear the night, it can't hurt you if you become part of it, if you use it. That the night can be harnessed and used. So who needs the Light? Pfft. One day, all the stars will wink out. All will be in night. Better to rule in the night, than to serve in the day.
To me, as both a GW1 vet and longtime GW2 player, this version is...... perverted. Like..... The best enemy trope is one who means well, but their actions show the exact opposite. If you still play, look at some of the bosses from the last expansion and the big bad from chapter four of LS four. Good ideals, but horrible actions (though do NOT get me started on that lich in GW1, ISTFG). Some folks say that the lyrics even point to Joko himself.
holy shit I just heard this version, it is SO different but I love it too!!! the original was beautiful and always made me shiver and cry, this version just makes me shiver soooo hard holy. good god this song is amazing
It's kinda Trahearne's song, so... as beautiful as it is, it wouldn't really fit. Specifically, the original Fear Not This Night is written from the perspective of the Pale Tree. As she is effectively out of commission in HoT, Trahearne takes up the burden of carrying his people's hope, even as tragedy surrounds them. He maintains this hope until the very end... even as Mordremoth tries to swallow everything, Trahearne will not give in.
@@Munchkin.Of.Pern09 I am of the mind that its more the Commander's theme song and it hits far harder if its a Sylvari Commander. By End of Dragons the Sylvari Commander has been alive for what....8 years? For context, Sieran back in the personal story was 21 and she was regarded as really young by Sylvari stands. The Sylvari Commander is not even half of her age and they have seen so much death and pain. It's a wonder they are still functioning. The Sylvari commander was shouldered with a seemingly impossible task and they did it several times over and still the world doesn't seem to get much better. Not to mention both Mordremoth and Jormag messing with their mind and the sheer amount of death they have seen and even experienced. Or seeing Aurene's only blood family left going mad and having to put them down.
@stry I'd like if the humans were live action played by humans and the sylvari played by humans with motion capturing like in Avatar (the James Cameron movie not the last airbender) while Charr and Norn are also motion captured but in a much different way (kinda like they did the Orcs in the Warcraft movie. Loved that film btw even though I know nothing of the game because annoying subscription fees). The Asura however could use the same technology they used on Dobby from the Harry Potter films and Golum from LoTR. The 3 Guild Wars novels make for such a great story made for a film actually and I can imagine all of this so vividly but I doubt Hollywood can ever make it how I imagine it. This game series has so much potentional and I wish there was more of it
Wonderfully sinister aand creepy, but why oh why is it so short? I love every second. Very nice touch with those changed lyrics, I love how it casts a different mood. Thanks for the lovely work!
I really wish that I could get his full version of the song in Hi-Fi. This is great and the fact that it doesn't have a full length version and/or a lossless download is criminal.
It's basically Joko singing to his Awakened. The reason why they didn't just write a new song about it and didn't remake Asja's version instead is that Sylvari are the Awakened from the Dream, and the song is sung by the Pale Tree. Asja's singing represented the beauty of Pale Tree, and the Dream, while Maclaine's voice represent Joko, and what he sings to his Awakened: Who needs the Light, dead corpses? And then the ressurected bodies called Awakened: you are our Light, Joko.We need you.
This is my favorite version of this song. So good. This Sylvari approves. There needs to be Darkness in order to see the Stars. The Mother Tree would be proud.
I'mma be honest - I used to not like this version. Then I actually PLAYED HoT, and well... *the emotions are intense.* Now that I have context, this darker, twisted version of the song that I love so much feels like the perfect summation of what HoT is all about. That even when it seems like the world should fall into despair, and shadows consume the light... we shall never give in to the darkness.
When the high templar grandmaster lost his all treasures... and haunted by his own mistakes what made the losses.. and slowly, unstoppable change start. He turn away from his gods, and give himself to the deep powerful, merciless and vanishing madness. A new legend borned.......
they posted it on soundcloud, and I recorded this with my pc sound recorder, the reason I did it is that I actively participate in one the community of GW2's main streamers (Aurora Peachy), and we often queue GW2 songs, and while we cannot link music from other sources than youtube, I decided to do it. :) So here it is :)
of course i meant respect for the singer - i thought you and the singer are the same person, sry for the mistake - english isn't my native language - thanks for uploading this
Anet has got there stuff together now this has been my favorite LW season so far and PoF was by far the better explanation, and season 4 is in some ways better than PoF
I liked PoF very much, but in this expansion I wanted one thing: seeing the whole Pantheon- Lyssa, Melandru, Dwayna, Kormir and Grenth , that react to Balthazar's betrayal, we simply only got some threats from Balthazar, and I just wanted to see in a cinematic how they reacted to it. I hope, I really do hope that they will someday reveal how Balthazar became that bad, what led him to this point where he was chained, and what was his connection to Lyssa, because she most likely gave him the Mirror and he didn't curse Lyssa, as he did the rest. Balthazar'd lived for ages, why the Gods turned away from him after all those time together? They had lived with him for ages too: don't they know his weak spots that can convince him not to go after his stupid anger? I don't know, I hope the Gods' story will soon come back with the answers. Also we know that Balthazar gave his blessing to GW1 PC before the fight with Abaddon, so he wasn't bad 1075, now we have 1331, so what changed within those 256 years? Those 256 years are very blur, so either we go to the Mists and find the answers, or the Gods will finally reveal their secrets.

King Reza, the last king of Orr, said that the player character is the Champion of Orr... and I said 'hey you idiot, I didn't do a stinking thing except kill some Risen, give that title to Trahearne here, he's the one that cleansed the land.' If I had to describe Trahearne in one word, it would be 'dedicated.' Dedicated to his Wyld Hunt. Then after, he was dedicated to the Pact, and, by extension, the death of an Elder Dragon. He once said - it has since been altered by Anet, the craze-heads - that 'I did not fear death. I feared failure.' Failure to complete his Wyld Hunt, but that all transferred into the Pact once he had completed his task. Quite apart from almost being taken over by an Elder Dragon, his (self-appointed) task was to kill Mordremoth, whether he died or not. Do you recall, the FIRST question he asked when we came to rescue him was about the Pact? Same in that one instance while regrowing Caladbolg. Seriously, Trahearne is the most dedicated person I have ever met. And here I am getting into a long-winded rant about how awesome Trahearne is (and I've barely scratched the surface, either)! Holy shit. I haven't played Guild Wars 2 in over two years. This song makes me feel serious FOMO
Makes me wanna play a dark profession like Necromancer.
_Who needs the light? Fear not this night._
Chills! I liked the original, but this is just... goosbumps! It needs to be full length on a good sound system and lossless please!
I love this version much more, his voice is amazing!
thank you for blessing us
i stopped playing the game several years ago.. but this song is still haunting me in a good way
Too bad, the story has really gotten good over the last two years.
Impeccable timing, since I'm working on my superhero rpg campaign...
holy shit I just heard this version, it is SO different but I love it too!!! the original was beautiful and always made me shiver and cry, this version just makes me shiver soooo hard holy. good god this song is amazing
They need to use this again for EoD, its so good
It's kinda Trahearne's song, so... as beautiful as it is, it wouldn't really fit.
@@Munchkin.Of.Pern09 erm no, this is repurposed for palawa Jojo during long live the lich
It's not... perfect...I can't explain it properly, but in it's own way it IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I have goosebumps
This song made me feel like woah the GW2 lore is so much more
We really need a guild wars movie!
This game series has so much potentional and I wish there was more of it
I looooooove this version so much~
Wonderfully sinister aand creepy, but why oh why is it so short? I love every second. Very nice touch with those changed lyrics, I love how it casts a different mood. Thanks for the lovely work!
OMG, this gives me shivers every time I listen to it. AAAAAAAAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
MacLaine Diemer, Homie! Please, keep bringing us juicy music like this. We super appreciate it!
Yes! I loved this version of Fear not this night in the trailer and I am so happy to have a full version of it. Great job!
It's so much more eerie and spooky. It totally fits the theme of the living story revolving around the fight against the undead lich :D.
He needs to do the full song cause his voice is like 😍😭
Each Time I Play Giuld Wars I'm Love This Song And It's Singor
I really wish that I could get his full version of the song in Hi-Fi. This is great and the fact that it doesn't have a full length version and/or a lossless download is criminal.
sorry about that... it was 2 years ago and I had no idea anyone would view this from me and I didn't have a normal software then 😔 😭
THANK YOU!!! OMGOMGOMG!!! I AM SO HAPPY!!!
Someone please make a 10 hour loop of this!!! :O I NEED IT IN MY LIFE!!!!
well can be 1 hr version? :D ruclips.net/video/Qy8d1fQ0IrE/видео.html
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!!!!!!
I was even planning to do it! :D I got up on 8am, and did it. :D
This sounds like someone, maybe the Commander, singing to someone as they die, or even the other way around!

God i /shuddered/
Best part of the song
This mastetpiece gives me chills
Worthy of a movie trailer
I can't believe how much I love this cover. Well done McClaine. What a voice!
Sweet mother of Joko it's finally here...
Maclaine Diemer made a great work, from a music that was amazing
I wish this was on Spotify so I could add to my playlist there!
this is the best version of this song. so eerie
This version has such a different feel. wow!
This is my favorite version of this song. So good. This Sylvari approves. There needs to be Darkness in order to see the Stars. The Mother Tree would be proud.
"Who needs the light?
Fear not this night."
Chills
thanks for the upload man!
I'mma be honest - I used to not like this version. Then I actually PLAYED HoT, and well... *the emotions are intense.* Now that I have context, this darker, twisted version of the song that I love so much feels like the perfect summation of what HoT is all about. That even when it seems like the world should fall into despair, and shadows consume the light... we shall never give in to the darkness.
this is like the anti hero song version of the original
The first trailer about GW2 which made me think that GW2 is a horror game.
Still one of the MMOs with the best OSTs
When the high templar grandmaster lost his all treasures... and haunted by his own mistakes what made the losses.. and slowly, unstoppable change start. He turn away from his gods, and give himself to the deep powerful, merciless and vanishing madness. A new legend borned.......
OMFG YES! THANK YOU O LORD OF GW FOR FINALLY PUTTING THIS UP! KYAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT A BEAUTIFULLY HAUNTING VOICE! PRAISE JOKO AND HIS MOMMY!
I still want a GW movie or Netflix show with this as the trailer music
Goosebumps how have I missed you.
Love, love, love it!!!! :D :D Ohh god so good remake of this theme!
*PRAISE JOKO*
PRAISE YOKKO
RAZE JOKO!
Papa Bones Praise Joko!
ALL HAIL THE MAD KING
PRAISE JOKO
He should record an album :D
This song is so awesome :D
Omg *- * I love it!
they posted it on soundcloud, and I recorded this with my pc sound recorder, the reason I did it is that I actively participate in one the community of GW2's main streamers (Aurora Peachy), and we often queue GW2 songs, and while we cannot link music from other sources than youtube, I decided to do it. :) So here it is :)
I see! Thank you!
IM GONNA SCREAM!!
Working on a music video for this song, can't wait to release it! The chills! :)
Finished it!
Click on my name, you can find it that way! :)
really really great - love this version like i love the original song - great work! i have so much respect for this
I repect it because Maclaine is so humble about his vocal talent. And he really can sing. GW2 has probably the best composer nowadays.
of course i meant respect for the singer - i thought you and the singer are the same person, sry for the mistake - english isn't my native language - thanks for uploading this
Amazing song, worth the wait.
its 2024 and the song is still not on spotify. please add it :(
I know right, I was just looking for it... god damn. :(
I needed this
Never played GW2 but this song is dope
You should give it a try (if you havent already)
BEST SONG EVER!
Ho fuck one of my favourite song of all times takes something deep.....and I love it
Hey. Hey. What’s that?
IT’S MY FUCKING JAM THAT’S WHAT
nice, thanks for sharing!
this is the demon lord version of this song.. :D
When the dark is rule and u cannot flee, just accept the fate.
Idk why but I always imagine Canach singing this (don't ask me why I just feel it :
It fits him or (later) Trahearne pretty well, doesn't it? (I'm leaning towards Trahearne myself, but I'm admittedly *highly* biased in favour of him... :P )
@@ChroniclerAether YES! Especially with the... And the... And the other... YES!
Also, does 'highly biased in favor' mean you didn't want him to die? Because I agree 100%
@@tiffanysmith490 laksdjfsalkdjfalskdf *He didn't deserve to ever die and leave the Commander alone and players with all the feels, okay?* D: [cough] I mean, yup, agreed 100%!
@@ChroniclerAether I know right?! I've written several stories about how it could happen differently /cry. How could Anet do that to us? I mean seriously, Trahearne was... he was legendary. King Reza, the last king of Orr, said that the player character is the Champion of Orr... and I said 'hey you idiot, I didn't do a stinking thing except kill some Risen, give that title to Trahearne here, he's the one that cleansed the land.'
If I had to describe Trahearne in one word, it would be 'dedicated.' Dedicated to his Wyld Hunt.
(If you want to read my stories you can find them on www.fanfiction.net/u/9230147/Tiffany-Smithi.)
Great singer, but the original is the winner for me.
Liked and Subscribed :)
**very heavy breathing** OwO
i feel like the pacing messed up the dark atmosphere just a little, needs to be a bit slower. nonetheless, i still like it
Love It
Umm I’m definitely fearing this night
Why does it sound like I have the speed on 0.75x
damnit, now do a mix up version with asja
YESSSSSSSSSS
Is there an instrumental version of the arrangement?
I wonder if you overlayed both versions, would it sound good?
For me, this is like a song from Joko, to the new Awakeneds. He sing only the lines, that can fit to the mummys too. I can imagin it under an awakening ceremony.
YAAAASSSS
i prefer both versions
where is this in the game?
Not long enough!!
I know, the ending is cut abruptly, please check reupload: ruclips.net/video/qDlxCumFalE/видео.html
I'm having mixed feelings! Somewhere I find it really beautiful, especially towards the end but the song in overal also let's me think about the beginning of some awful hardstyle song :')
NO, NOT PRAISE JOKO
JESUS CHRIST LOVE THIS
