    I'll never forget the day my buddy and I were drunkenly walking down an alley and found a decrepit old Rhodes in a trashcan behind an apartment complex mostly populated by fairly affluent college students. It had- get this- lost the negative connection inside. That's ALL that stopped it from working. I fixed it in like twenty minutes, and we (he's a woodwinds player and I'm a bass/guitar/various strings guy) didn't really know what we were going to do with it other than just plunk around and sit drinks and pool chalk (said buddy had a 7' 1-piece slate table in his living room-priorities) and stuff on it til we met an AWESOME newbie keys player. He later recorded and toured with it, said it was 100% reliable.

    78-year-old Piano Tuner-Technician (semi-retired) posting here: As a trainee years ago, I had the privilege of attending a workshop presented by Mr. Rhodes himself: personal history of the piano, tuning procedures, mechanical adjustments, electronics. I still have a Rhodes pick-up in my tool kit feeding into a pocket amplifier so that i can isolate the sound of a single string. This is very helpful while tuning during the sound checks before a live performance!

    I regret the day I sold my Fender Rhodes! But I sold it and my MusicMan amp and Yamaha 15 inch speaker and horn tweeter speaker box so I could buy a Korg 01/Wfd Wave Station and MUSICMAN Guitar amp/speaker box 212HD... back in the late 1980s. I later bought a Yamaha S80 portable 88 keyboard that has some pretty good Rhodes sounds... but nothing is as good as the real deal.... and I remember playing that Billy Joel intro " Don't go changing"... and the Michael McDonald Rhodes intro to Minute by Minute... Great memories for sure... and nice rhodes... 😉

    Great job!! I would add that I don't believe a whole tone scale (such as in You are the Sunshine of My Life) was employed in a pop tune before or since-- running up the scale in triads no less. Stevie was amazing. Thank you for doing this!

    Nice intros! Well played.
    Your No Quarter intro is definitely that of Led Zeppelin playing live, as the studio version was played on the Hohner Electrapiano - and I always like to give the Electrapiano a shoutout, as I think it’s an under-appreciated instrument.

      @andyguttridge4399 9 месяцев назад

      @@NicolasMelis , JPJ always used the Electrapiano in the studio (Stairway, Down By the Seaside etc as well as NQ) because it has a much heavier action than the Rhodes, which he liked- very close to an acoustic piano. But it also looks like a granny’s piano, not very cool and very awkward to haul around. So they used the Rhodes live. I have the Hohner Electra here.

    I wish I still had my 73. I picked it up cheap, got a service manual and did a complete service, stretch tuned it adjusted the fundamental tones and it sounded great. It was an older one with the wooden frame, I sold it to buy a stupid Marshall amplifier...what was I thinking?

    Long known as THE easiest instrument to get lost in a mix. Some of these intros are truly memorable. But as soon as any of the other instruments join in, the Rhodes player can pretty well go lay down and take a nap. Or they might (as usually happened) immediately jump over to a more useful synthesizer or organ that has enough clarity and articulation to have its notes actually discernible. l can't recall any engineers that got excited when they wheeled a Rhodes into the room. That says a lot.

    Awwww, you missed one of my faves. Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years." I bought a used Fender Rhodes key bass for $200 at a pawn shop and the guy threw in a blown out 73 key Rhodes that I paid to have overhauled for $300. I played it for years with a church worship team and eventually went with a Korg Sampling Grand. By then we had a decent bass player so I sold the duo to some recording studio through Musician's Friend in New Jersey that was trying to locate the 2 final instruments to round out their retro sounds studio. I ended up blessing them with a deal. Both for $600. I heard the guy's partner scream with glee in the background when I laid the price on them.
