With a DX7 and a Korg M1, you can make 70% of the music I grew up on (without drums). Add in a JP8000, a Prophet 5, a TB-303 and a MiniMoog and you can make most of the rest.
M1, truly a solid board that could still keep up with sound quality! I remember trading up from Ensoniq SQ80 to an M1. Holy cow. LOL. Instead of sampling and chasing that pure and clean sound, it was all right there with so much more polyphony. Sounds at a click instead of loading up disks? My first REAL quality workstation. Who remembers the Roland U220? That was another eye opening toy! Those days were so much fun experiencing the revolution of affordable home studio gear that the pro's were using! A love of synths that continues 40 years later!
I remember trying it out in the late 80s, in a local store. But it looked so increadably boring that I didn't want it. (Compared to the old Prophet 5 and such.)
If you search for hte musicradar article "Which synth was used to create the Seinfeld slap bass sound" they point out that it's not the M1 or the 360 Systems MIDI Bass, but instead a set of processed samples. The video shows him playing it on a Kurzweil.
Yes, I did search and watched the video where he plays it on a Kurzweil. However, I’ve also read that he actually sampled the M1 sound, among others, to create that sound and played it on the Kurzweil. While I’m not 100% sure about this, the sound on the M1 does sound close to my ears, so I included it in the list. Plus, it was fun to play!:)
@@NicolasMelis No worries. In the article that also showed the video, he said it was an actual slap bass, highly compressed etc. No mention of M1. And you played it well :)
George Michael's used the M1 piano for the song 'Cowboys and Angels' - it's so prominent and fits the song brilliantly. I used to own the T3, the 'turbo-charged' M1. Those were the days!
I didn’t know it was used in those songs. The M1 was the keyboard I wanted after hearing a demo in a Houston music store. I was never able to afford one.
I still have my Korg M1ex, wonderful keyboard and synth. I think the simplicity of old keyboards allows you to really appreciate them. To play the current ones you need a computer engineering course.
Excellent synth that has dethroned the Yamaha DX7. This synth is very dynamic and is easy to program! It still sounds great! I have 3 at home (1 in service) and 2 that I repaired for a ridiculous price. Solid construction, medium weight, but still up to date with its brothers Wavestation, O1W... Thanks for this demo, Nicolas! Good sounds, good songs! 😊
It always cracks me up when people commenting that they’re amazed that there are presets in a hit song. Uh , you do know it’s precisely the reason these devices are made and have good sounds so that people use them lol
I couldn't afford an M1 back then but still own the X3 I bought instead! The disk drive started to fail 2 years so I replaced it with a USB version and that gave access to even more sounds so it is still kicking hard!

what's up friend? You made me remember the old days and it's great. On the other hand, I would like to ask you if there is any way to transfer the sounds from a Yamaha synthesizer to a DAW program and have said information recorded in MIDI format to be able to edit the notes in the software? Since the synthesizer has good sounds that I would like to transfer to the computer and be able to tweak the notes, since I don't know how to use the keyboard and on the computer through the MIDI format I can place the musical notes in the correct pitch. and that is what I need to be able to compose some musical themes. Hi! To transfer sounds from your Yamaha synthesizer to a DAW and record in MIDI format, connect your synthesizer to your computer using a MIDI interface or USB cable, install any necessary drivers, and configure your DAW to recognize the MIDI input. Create a new MIDI track, enable recording, and play your synthesizer to record the MIDI notes! Hope that helps :)
