    I study soil mechanics and there's also a "water content" for all types of soils (sand, clay, etc.). When soils have too much water, they behave similar to liquids, which is dangerous because they can collapse in an instant. When soils are dry, they appear crumbled and there is weak bond between particles. Similarly, there's no definite answer as to "how much water is needed" but we have what we call the "optimum moisture content". At this optimum value of water content, the soil has increased strength and does not compress easily, and water cant escape quickly from the soil. I hope we all can find our skin's optimum moisture content! ❤ Love this video, Dr. Dray!

      @@jamiehorwitz1227 Hello there. In soil mechanics, moisture content and water content are used interchangeably since they basically mean the same thing. But yeah, for skins in particular, they are different. From Dr. Dray's videos, I have been aware that a moisturizer locks in water that's why she suggested slathering it on wet/damp skin right after showering so as to prevent transepidermal water loss. Have a nice day!

      I'm no dermatologist or a qualified skin specialist. I can however, provide you a review from a consumer standpoint, Cerave works well for my oily, blemish prone and sensitive skin. And also, most, if not all their products are fragrance free which is something to consider if you have sensitive skin, and it's more reasonably priced as well 😊
      I love their:
      ➡️Eye Repair Cream (one of the only eye creams that don't give me bumps around my undereyes)
      ➡️AM (with SPF30) & PM Facial Moisturising Lotion (don't recommend for drier skin, it's very lightweight, may not be moisturising enough)
      ➡️ Skin Renewing Night Cream (has a thick, ointment like consistency but not greasy, helps significantly with my redness and dry patch on inner cheeks)
      ➡️ Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum (it's like a lightweight gel cream, helps with hydration)

      Emily, You did not say what the diagnosis was - what was the state of your skin when you went to the dermatologist? A dermatologist usually isn't going to recommend products that they know won't be effective. Cerevae is excellent. She could have recommended them to you only making an educated guess that it's what you really wanted to hear to make yourself feel better so you could spend money for no other reason than hope. Try going to an esthetician instead.

I've tried moisturizing AM and PM, but I am OLD, and by about 1pm, I am dry. I live in a dry climate in SoCal. HA doesn't seem to help me much even with a nice occlusive moisturizer on top. SPF seems to dry me out even more, even those that everyone else thinks are moisturizing. So, I am going to try moisturizer at mid day for a while, and see how that goes. Somehow, I don't dry out overnight as much as I do during the day. I've been watching your channel since 2019, and the single thing that has made the biggest difference for me is applying moisturizer on wet skin. Thank you. Hmmm. A few years ago I was applying CeraVe Healing Ointment under my nose pretty religiously while suffering from a cold. After maybe a week, I got a terrible case of perioral dermatitis in that area. I thought this was from too much occlusives trapping moisture in the skin. Is it true that you can cause issues by over-application of highly occlusive products? Not hyper-hydration but…I don’t know…not letting the skin breathe? Also, I agree - that blue color looks really great on you! Thanks, Dr. Dray, for all the work you put into your videos. Yours is truly the best kind of “modern day information sharing.”

I rarely get pimples but found that when I put any kind of moisturizer or foundation on my face, I would be finding a new pimple everyday. It was getting frustrating because without moisturizer my face would be so dry and scaley and itchy. This stuff is amazing! My face hasn't ever been this soft and smooth, and I don't get pimples! Not to mention, the itchiness on my face has gone down significantly. A big part of this moisturizer is petrolatum, and I think that is what has helped so much.

    Over all I did learn a lot about this. I have a younger brother (7) who due to covid has turned into a huge germaphobe. Whenever he can was his hands he will, whenever he can moisturize with lotion he will. He has eczema, so knowing the lotion helps to some degree is nice. He applies it maybe even as often as 7 times a day if he can get away with it. I worry that it will dry out his skin, and I actually watched this video to try and see if it would, only to find that you just gave examples of extreme being “oh, if they apply every 2 seconds that is what extreme is”. To someone with autism like me, that description of extreme does nothing but confuse me and make me wonder what the hell extreme really is, or “too much”. He recently has been dealing with dry skin, my guess is that is due to his new fear of germs and his constant hand washing and lotion using. You talked a lot about over moisturizing, but I heard relatively little about the effects that lotion could have on drying ones skin, if anything at all.
    I couldn’t say where or when I heard about it, but if there is a *reasonable* “too much” what is it? Every twelve seconds is obviously an over exaggeration, and won’t help me. Is there anybody who can give me the knowledge so I can help my brother avoid messing up his skin? If that is even a danger

When I had acne I went to a top dermatologist and he prescribed Cetaphil lotion (the original one that is semi-clear) as both a cleanser and moisturiser and stressed the importance of keeping skin moisturised this way. When acned skin dries out it gets worse because of the irritation and inflammation and thickening of the skin plus more oil production to compensate.

    • @boomboom6577
      @boomboom6577 2 года назад +2

      That’s actually true. It’s basic. Your oil production increases to compensate for the lack of moisture. It’s kind of common sense- if your body couldn’t do this, your skin would dry out if you don’t moisturize. The body is simply trying to make the skin do what it’s supposed to do: act as a waterproof protectant against elements and protect you from things that would penetrate your skin and cause you harm. Moisturizing actually helps your body regulate your oil production. That said, some people produce an excessive amount of oil. In that case, moisturizer is still needed. But medications like spiro can regulate the oil production.
      But if you don’t moisturize, your oil production can increase. If you have acne prone skin, the surge of oil can cause clogged pores.
      But you can always just choose a light moisturizer.
      It is not myth, there’s nothing to debunk.

    • @sirseth1087
      @sirseth1087 2 года назад +3

      @@boomboom6577 No, it isn’t true. Dr.Dray and other dermatologists have said time and time again that the skin does not have a biofeedback loop. Skin doesn’t “know” that it is not being moisturized. Oil regulation is controlled by ones’ hormones-no moisturizer can change that. When skin is irritated and stripped of too much moisture, that does cause inflammation which can lead excessive oil production. It’s an inflammatory response to irritation. But that isn’t because skin is literally thinking “We’re dry, so let’s moisturize.” Lol
      Sincerely, a very oily rosacean in the southern US. I slathered on moisturizer for the last 3 years and only when I stopped moisturizing and stuck to a basic gentle cleanser did my skin clear up and normalize again.

      @@boomboom6577 I used to believe that too until recently! It seems like common sense, like you said, but a lot of professionals have started pretty definitively that skin actually doesn't work like that. It's really interesting actually!
      Editing to urge you to read Labmuffin's article on "the myth of rebound oil". Sir Seth is pretty on the nose; dryness can lead to irritation/inflammation, which leads to pre-existing oil stores being re-directed to those areas. It sounds like a very similar thing, but it technically isn't, and I'd love for Dr Dray to talk about that 😄

    I noticed you've applied moisturizer right over your eye lids. I find if I get any sort of product NEAR my eyes they will run all day long and get irritaed in the outer corners. Have you found any effective products for extremely sensitive skin/eye area?

    I thought I just naturally had dry skin on my face so I slathered on moisturizer for years and years. I read some articles about how it can make dry skin actually worse (it made sense the way they explained it). I skipped it last night and my skin feels so smooth right now. I’m gonna see how this goes.

    I really, like the lipikar lotion. I even use it on my face. And I'm actually one of these people who overdid it. I did this skin flooding trend out of curiosity and it totally gave my hyperhydration issues. Discontinued the habit and within one week my skin was fine. Very interesting experiment though. I'm just glad I didn't have some photo appointment 🙈🤣

    My skin has had numerous issues throughout my 47 years. I have eczema on my legs that flare up during the fall and winter. I have rosceasa on my face and numerous issues with that. I have been to a handful of dermatologist and what have found to help the most is stop using products and makeup for a while.
    I havent used anything on my face except mild soap for two years and it has done more good than anything else. My scalp is now having issues, but at least my face is better than it has been in a long time.
    I'm going to start bringing makeup back a little bit throwing out my old makeup. I want to try vanicream and just see how my skin does. I have such reactive skin I'm scared honestly. It was the worst when I tried acne free when that was a big thing. Something in that product really ticked my skin off it was bad. So I'm so leary of such products, but I know with dry skin I need a little something. Thank you for this detailed information 👏

      I would not introduce makeup unless your skin is stable. If you have rosacea, search Dr Dray's channel to manage it. Never use anything with fragrance-definitely an irritant for you. Sounds like you need a good hydrating overnight mask. The Origin (by Dr Andrew Weil has one). Do your research.

    My hands turned BLACK from too much cleansing. I once cleansed almost every 2 minutes. A combination of being a clean freak and having a new baby. Moisturizers with ceramide being reapplied every few hours (and not cleansing as often) really saved my hands and now it's back to it's original colour.

    Yes, you can overdo anything, if you try hard enough. My own skin on my face has it's own way of telling me I've used too much. My sin isn't moisturizing, it's using too much product when I remember to do it. If my face is inflamed--I get acne. If everything has been hunky-dory, I get milia. Oh what fun. So, as a 65-year old with greasy skin, it's Neutrogena HydroBoost gel for me.

      You need to hydrate your skin (shower). Then apply moisturizer *while your skin is still slightly damp*, not after it dries. Then top it with Lanolin or Vaseline because it's an occlusive, moisturizer is not. This will protect you from that super dry environment.

    Oh thank you, I've been watching someone who said, that doesn't make sense to moisturize after azelaic acid or retinol in squalane if I have oily skin. Now I have to say that I don't apply moisturizer right after retinol with oily texture. I wait a good 40 minutes till everything is absorbed. And after azelaic acid + moisturizer I don't have any residue left on my skin, so I assumed that if my skin is not left oily then I do everything right. So this video helped me to understand that I almost made a mistake when I wanted to stop using it

    It appears that the catalyst in damqge from over moisturizering seems to be due to covered surface , diapers, masks, shoes etc. And in the case of swimmers is the chlorine and of course the bacteria over load. Other than this the skin is able to self regulate and we don't have to worry about over moisturizering I believe. Right @dr dray?

    • @JuliaRaar
      @JuliaRaar 2 года назад +1

      Hey very interesting! Can you explain a bit more ? You mean that over moisturizing is not a problem itself but when that surface comes in contact with something else (and the moisturizer is still sitting on skin) it could create damage ?

    I have to wear a mask at work all the time and I find that it dries my skin out instead. Have you heard of this happening to other people? I will say I am always cold and rarely sweat while at work. It's so cold in the office that I am in sweaters and scarves year round...even during the hot and humid summer weather!

      I am a teacher, so I am wearing + talking in a mask all day (as well as having rosacea), and I absolutely find this! I have it drying out (eventually) even when it’s hot in the warmer months & my face is sweaty. Not at first, but after the sweat evaporates. At night, I find I have to moisturize way more when I’ve had a mask on that day. Maybe it’s the barrier disruption of wearing it that causes it?

      Yes! I wear washable cotton masks and they seem to pull the moisture right out of my skin. My sunscreen is very emollient, so it helps with this, though.
