What I love about our 2 Whippets is they are happy with a 30 minute off lead walk, 1 hour off lead walk, 3 hour hike at the beach up all the sanddunes, i've never found them grumble at the distance, still zooming at the end of longer walks. The flipside on a shorter walk they are equally as happy and will go and crash out on the bed/sofa/rug etc 😄

I used to have Bedlington terriers many years ago when they were not popular. I see they have got more popular were I live. I have always fancied a whippet and this video as made my mind up. So, I had him for a good long time which was a blessing. I've been doing my research and when ready will get a Whippet or perhaps one from a rescue that might be a mix.
My 2 whippets have rarely done more than 5k in 1 day - a short mad run around, couple of short walks and they are happy, my little female absolutely hates bad weather and both will walk around puddles, they won't go to bed without their fleece jumpers at night and are by far the best dogs I have ever seen with kids..zero aggression to anything or anyone (other than rabbits, birds & small furries) -- also, like you say, they are happy with short walks or 10k, as long as they are with you they don't complain - once you have them you won't get another breed - i also recommend getting 2 minimum, as they love to cuddle up to each other.

My grandson is a Whippet, Fettuccini is his name, Fetta for short. He is beautiful! I've always had Greyhounds and people say the same thing, that they need too much exercise but it really is a myth! Two 30 min walks a day and they are happy then sleep the day away!! Easy breeds and so loving!!! You can check out the videos of Fettuccini the Whippet on my channel.
Thank you for telling everyone about the myths of whippets and greyhounds they don’t need masses of exercise as you said I have a half whippet half greyhound after he has had a run round we argue who is going to have the Sofa
When I was choosing a breed I saw lots of...’whippets should be kept on a lead at all times as they will run away/after any wildlife or livestock’. Hmmm. I should have taught my whippets to read because they didn’t know that was a thing 🤓. Molly even walked up to an injured ‘pidgin ‘ one day. She sniffed and looked up at me with that... ‘Mum ...help the pidgin’ look on her face. Took me ages to find a willing bird sanctuary to take it in. 😶
I was nodding and yes-ing everything you were saying. I have two too. Two 30min walks a day, sometimes just one, occasionally 3, a zoom or two a week, and my guys sleep most of the rest of the time. I max the sniffing opportunities during their walks so their minds are well exercised. Easy dog to be owned by! Great to see your guys in such fine fettle! Thanks for the vid.
I get the same question a lot. I always run through my whippet's daily routine : 6am up. 6.05 breakfast. 6.07 toilet outside. 6.10 back to bed. 10.30 morning constitutional. 12.0 lunch. 12.03 bed. 2.30 walk and run. .....you get the picture! One very fit and placid whippet. He is an absolute treasure.
Also, I have my poodle off leash a lot and have trained her to stop mid chase and return when called, would that would for a whippet? I also don’t have a fence, but again, I have trained my poodle to stay in the yard and I am careful for passerby that she may get to excited to meet. Also my husband will jog a couple miles with the poodle occasionally, is that too much to jog like that? I have so many questions! Thanks.
You can train a whippet to do all that but a Whippet is a sighthound and they are harder to train recall but again it depends on the puppy some are easier than others Both my whippets are very good on recall Also your dog will help teach the new puppy to understand the norms too 🙏👍😍
I have a sweet standard poodle who could use a friend eventually, and I see the whippet breed as a great option now that I know about them. I have trained my poodle and plan to put in some time to train especially the first year. Would it work out to have a puppy whippet introduced to a ln energetic standard poodle? She’s sweet, a little in your face, but I think she would calm down. I have see elsewhere that whippets don’t do well with multi dog households, but it seems like that may be less true depending on training and temperament. How do those things affect the result? Thanks!
Hi Deborah well that’s not easy to say a lot depends on the individual dogs Like people each dog is unique The best think to do it test your dog with whippet and see how they get on and also see how they get on with a puppy in your home too if possible This will really help you understand your dog with another Hope that helps 🙏👍😍
I have a retired greyhound, and the same is true of him. Half an hour walk, and he'll spend the next 5 or 6 hours asleep. 15 minutes of mad zooming around the back yard after his dinner, and that's it for the evening. We have a small 16ft caravan, and he goes everywhere with us, has his own bunk and we have a collapsible dog pen for outside so he doesn't need to be tied up. The whole sighthound family is very rewarding, make great pets, don't smell, shed much, rarely bark (with a few notable exceptions), and don't need huge amounts of exercise. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to people who live in flats, either, even the larger greyhounds. Our boy is large, at 36kg, but so long as he has a bed to accommodate his long bony legs, he's happy.
I got my Whippet when I was 21. He was my best friend for 14 wonderful and truly amazing years. when he passed away I went crazy with sadness. I had trouble even being around dogs. I am 76 now and after all this time I am ready for another wonderful friend.
As someone who enjoys long and challenging hikes, and wants to get into doing multiple-day hikes (or backpacking as I think they call it,) do you think a whippet would enjoy things like that or would it be too much?
When I was über fit, in my 30's/40's we had a Lurcher and a Whippet.. but now, with arthritis, I can't do those mammoth walks that the Lurcher loved so much. Our little Whippet is just perfect. Wonderful little hounds.
I read they don't have the same eager to please energy as a Lab, but do they at least like to cuddle and can tolerate it? I wouldn't want a dog who mostly avoids cuddling. Thanks!
We had a whippet early in my married life he was a great companion..........we have now got a Pug that we had for about 6 years............stay safe..........thanks for sharing
They're hard to find in animal shelters. I can't believe how much energy they have. An hour or hour and a half? omg the agility. That is more than I can be in a gym!
Thank you very much for all the videos you share. Are your Whippets friendly with other dogs? I have a Border Collie who is very calm indoors, and I would like to add another breed that is calm indoors and was thinking perhaps a Whippet would suit? But then I have heard people say Whippets don't like Border Collies. Is that true? Thank you 🙂
Hi Sabina if you are think of getting a puppy whippet I think you will be ok it’s all about setting the norms from day one and if your Border Collie is ok with other days and puppies I can’t see a problem People say whippet’s don’t like cats, rabbits, horses and lots of things but I also know lots of whippets that have started their live with other animals and have no problem at all It may well be different if you get an older whippet at has never know life with an other animal tho Our little Rosie loves all dogs Hope that helps 🙏👍😍
@@onemanandhiswhippet Thank you very much for your reply. That makes me really happy! Yes, my BC is very gentle with other dogs, and I am thinking of getting a puppy. Your videos have been such fantastic help with the decision making process, and a Whippet definitely ticks all the boxes. Thank you again :-)
Our lurcher used to love to sleep on the bed between us but we discovered he had "sleep startle" and it was too scary not knowing if he'd lash out unknowingly and take your ear off! So he now has full residency on the couch which suits him very well thank you. Shame, he's such a naturally gentle soul... Does anyone know if whippets are prone to this? I do know greyhounds are. My lurcher is a rescue so who knows what experiences he had before he found love with us.
My husband wants a whippet we have 6 kids from 5 to 17 all are chilled not crazy hyper loud kids at all we live in a nice village with plenty of open space have a big garden and my husband is home all day every day me n the kids r out during the week and then we are all in most weekends would anyone recommend a whippet for us? Are they very bark happy as we live in a nice quiet could de sac with all elderly folk and we wouldn't want a dark that's going to annoy them or wake up the kids all hours.
Hi there you sound just the family to have a whippet they are very easy to look after and don’t bark must too. They love to sleep and would love a run around your garden The only thing is recall when if their lead they are likely to chase small animals Recall can be trained but whippets are great on a lead too Do check out my other videos of when we got Rosie as a puppy 👍👍

It's too bad that I don't have any fenced area for a Whippet to run freely near where I live. It's what's holding me back from getting one. Fingers crossed that my town makes a dog park or something 🙏
❤ I wanted a female Doberman pinscher but my complex won’t allow a dog that heavy and physically intimidating :( ... so two whippets it is looking forward to it ... they are ideal for my lifestyle ...
Not sure why you decided on a Doberman at first? Whippets have a completely different personality maybe a German Pinscher would be more to your liking they're a lot smaller than a Doberman have the same look. If you need a dog to be a bit of a guard dog a Whippet is not going to be that for you.
miniature pinchers are too yappy ... female runt doobies are fun and caring ... short hair and smart like a WIPPET ... my wife had a gentle Doobie with ears and tail ... our family raised Danes Newfie’s and Pyrenees ... politely I know my dog breeds ... but not all these hybrids mastiffs ... the best all around dog is a female lab ... SHALOHA
@@sherrilldean211 German Pinscher is not a Miniature Pinscher two different breeds I do agree min pins are barky the German Pinscher is about the same size as a whippet..but I was just saying if you are looking for a bit of a guard dog a Whippet is not...
I've got a whippet and a Norwegian Elkhound. They are SO different in every way! I've just subscribed to your channel. I'd love you to have a look at mine!
The same can be said for my ex-racing Greyhound, Donal… he’s the laziest creature I’ve ever met. But when he and Mando the whippet get each other going it sounds like a pack of wolves have invaded my home. Love my two boys.
I could never trust my girl off leash. If she saw something in the distance like a bunny she would watch it then as soon as it moved, off she would go and nothing I could do would stop her. But other than that she was my beautiful girl that I will keep in my heart forever 🙏🏼
We adopted a 1 year old rescue whippet recently and he is a brilliant dog, however he constantly starts whining in the mornings .. like really early even though he is in our bedroom/it's warm and he doesn't need the toilet or anything (we let him out the first few days and he just keeps whining after). He gets a decent amount of exercise daily, mostly during the day and once we are up and move around the house, he actually goes back to his bed and chills/no whining. It seems he just wants us to get up... do you have any tips for us? How can we stop this behaviour?
Lol 😂 oh no that’s not good the key is to be in control if you respect to him whining he will very soon know how to get you to respond The things to do are make sure he is covered in the crate, don’t let him out until it’s the right time for you, and when he whining Point at him look into he’s eyes and stay NO ! Keep to this and in a few days you will see he will change and understand the routine in a morning 👍 hope that helps 👍🙏😍
@@onemanandhiswhippet thanks a mil for the response! That does help a lot!! Randolph (that's his name) doesn't sleep in a crate - but now that you mention the cover... maybe he does need another layer? He just started whining next to me in his bed and once I put a blanket on him, he chilled... our other dog is a pug who is neeever cold (always roasting in his thick coat) so a dog getting cold is kind of a new experience for us that we need to look out for. in any case thanks for the fast response we really hope we can change this behaviour fast otherwise we will go up the walls haha

I'd read that whippets are called 'sighthounds' because they hunt by sight rather than smell, but looking how these two interact with their environment they obviously have a keen sense of smell and rely on it very much. I love the fact that they have a short coat, much cleaner.
Oh my goodness... people who get Spaniels..Just WHY? They just never stop. Worreting about, into everything, restless..just nope! A Whippet is happy with some reasonable walks/runs, and then dozes the rest of the day.
Where did people get the idea whippets need much excercise? They're such lazy dogs. Our whippet prefers to snuggle on the couch for most of the day. And so funny to see your whippet do the pirouette thing, ours does that too when she's excited :)
You said “If you let them sleep in your bed”, we have no choice. We can bed Penny down in her bed but she sneaks in with us, waking us up being too hot!
These dogs don't have a lot of body fat which means they burn themselves out really quickly a 10 minute dash does for them. Because of the lack of body fat they feel the cold so coats are necessary in winter. Please emphasise to your vet that they they don't metabolise (lack of body fat) anesthetic well so an experienced vet is essential for neutering. My whippet comes camping in the tent with me and is a quiet calm companion. Best retirement dog ever ❤️
The main difference between my Whippet and the ones here is that my can't be off his lead...he was a rescue and his recall is awful. He has gotten better in enclosed fields, but we simply cant afford to pay 10 pound an hour each day to let him run
@@onemanandhiswhippet are both of yours fixed? Ours is on the larger end of a whippet (half inch from being classed as a lurcher) and isn't fixed. I think that may be a big difference
If anyone thinks of getting a dog because ' it doesn't a lot of exercise ' They are deluded and will suppress the dogs happiness and fulfilment in life . My whippet is 10 and I walk him maybe 3 hrs per day. Plus car trips out to shops. Sure they love their duvets and warm cuddles by the fire but we need to either accept that our dogs deserve an active life , or take the decision to Not get a dog.
Exactly! I've had 3 Whippets and honestly I don't recommend them to everyone sure they're pretty to look at but they are in the sight hound group and need to be watched at all times as at any given moment they may chase something. I do take my dog to the beach and she's good off the leash but never do I think she's not going to chase something. They can be stubborn so obedience training will take a lot more dedicated time than say a dog in the working breed group this is why you don't see them much in obedience competitions there are several other breeds that are difficult too this is why nobody should ever get a breed just because they're cute or pretty everyone should be prepared to know the breed first. When they say a breed needs an experienced dog owner they should know what the means...not for everyone. Like I say I love my Whippet but I do know they have certain needs and restrictions.

Yep totally 💯 👍 thanks for watching 🙏😁👍
Thank you for telling everyone about the myths of whippets and greyhounds they don’t need masses of exercise as you said I have a half whippet half greyhound after he has had a run round we argue who is going to have the Sofa
Yep totally 👍👍👍👍👍 thanks for watching 🙏👍😍
When I was choosing a breed I saw lots of...’whippets should be kept on a lead at all times as they will run away/after any wildlife or livestock’. Hmmm. I should have taught my whippets to read because they didn’t know that was a thing 🤓. Molly even walked up to an injured ‘pidgin ‘ one day. She sniffed and looked up at me with that... ‘Mum ...help the pidgin’ look on her face. Took me ages to find a willing bird sanctuary to take it in. 😶
Oh that’s lovely 🙏👍😍
I was nodding and yes-ing everything you were saying. I have two too. Two 30min walks a day, sometimes just one, occasionally 3, a zoom or two a week, and my guys sleep most of the rest of the time. I max the sniffing opportunities during their walks so their minds are well exercised. Easy dog to be owned by!
Great to see your guys in such fine fettle! Thanks for the vid.
Many thanks Rob 🙏 you know your whippets 👍👍
Thank you for your nice videos!! I really enjoy watching them 😁
Many thanks 🙏
I get the same question a lot. I always run through my whippet's daily routine : 6am up. 6.05 breakfast. 6.07 toilet outside. 6.10 back to bed. 10.30 morning constitutional. 12.0 lunch. 12.03 bed. 2.30 walk and run. .....you get the picture! One very fit and placid whippet. He is an absolute treasure.
Lol 😂 excellent 👍
Also, I have my poodle off leash a lot and have trained her to stop mid chase and return when called, would that would for a whippet? I also don’t have a fence, but again, I have trained my poodle to stay in the yard and I am careful for passerby that she may get to excited to meet. Also my husband will jog a couple miles with the poodle occasionally, is that too much to jog like that? I have so many questions! Thanks.
You can train a whippet to do all that but a Whippet is a sighthound and they are harder to train recall but again it depends on the puppy some are easier than others
Both my whippets are very good on recall
Also your dog will help teach the new puppy to understand the norms too 🙏👍😍
Great video as ever Dave - Jennifer and I really enjoyed watching this thanks for making it 🙏👍
Thanks Russ 🙏😍👍
Spaniels bend the laws of thermodynamics with their perpetual energy. Its near impossible to exhaust a Spaniel 😂
Lol 😂 yep that’s right but also great dogs too if you know what you are getting into 🙏👍😍
I have a sweet standard poodle who could use a friend eventually, and I see the whippet breed as a great option now that I know about them. Thanks!
Hi Deborah well that’s not easy to say a lot depends on the individual dogs
Like people each dog is unique
The best think to do it test your dog with whippet and see how they get on and also see how they get on with a puppy in your home too if possible
This will really help you understand your dog with another
Hope that helps 🙏👍😍
How come they never wag their tails? Is that common for all whippets?
No they do 👍😍
I have a retired greyhound, and the same is true of him.
He sounds great 🙏 and yep totally agree 🙏😁thanks for watching 🙏👍😍
Awesome bud cheers 👍🏻
Many thanks 🙏
after thirty years I am getting another in. few weeks and I can’t wait.
👍👍👍
I got my Whippet when I was 21. He was my best friend for 14 wonderful and truly amazing years. when he passed away I went crazy with sadness. I had trouble even being around dogs. I am 76 now and after all this time I am ready for another wonderful friend.
@@jerrypolverino6025 good for you your in for lots of love and fun with your new best friend 🙏😍👍
As someone who enjoys long and challenging hikes, and wants to get into doing multiple-day hikes (or backpacking as I think they call it,) do you think a whippet would enjoy things like that or would it be too much?
My two walk around 10k a day no problems 👍
Our boy just had his 2nd vaccination, I can't wait to get him out! Great video 👌
Excellent 👍👍👍
When I was über fit, in my 30's/40's we had a Lurcher and a Whippet.. but now, with arthritis, I can't do those mammoth walks that the Lurcher loved so much.
Our little Whippet is just perfect.
Wonderful little hounds.
Yep that’s whippets 🙏👍😍
I read they don't have the same eager to please energy as a Lab, but do they at least like to cuddle and can tolerate it? I wouldn't want a dog who mostly avoids cuddling. Thanks!
Rosie love cuddles 🥰
My favourte dog x

We had a whippet early in my married life he was a great companion..........we have now got a Pug that we had for about 6 years............stay safe..........thanks for sharing
Thanks Ian 🙏 best regards

Question: how are the whippets for hunting I live in the the U.S.
I don’t hunt with my dogs but they are originally hunting dog for rabbits 🐇 👍🙏😍
They're hard to find in animal shelters. I can't believe how much energy they have. An hour or hour and a half? omg the agility. That is more than I can be in a gym!
Lol 😂 👍 thanks for watching 🙏👍😍
Thank you very much for all the videos you share. Are your Whippets friendly with other dogs? I have a Border Collie who is very calm indoors, and I would like to add another breed that is calm indoors and was thinking perhaps a Whippet would suit? But then I have heard people say Whippets don't like Border Collies. Is that true? Thank you 🙂
Hi Sabina if you are think of getting a puppy whippet I think you will be ok it’s all about setting the norms from day one and if your Border Collie is ok with other days and puppies I can’t see a problem
People say whippet’s don’t like cats, rabbits, horses and lots of things but I also know lots of whippets that have started their live with other animals and have no problem at all
It may well be different if you get an older whippet at has never know life with an other animal tho
Our little Rosie loves all dogs
Hope that helps 🙏👍😍
@@onemanandhiswhippet Thank you very much for your reply. That makes me really happy! Yes, my BC is very gentle with other dogs, and I am thinking of getting a puppy. Your videos have been such fantastic help with the decision making process, and a Whippet definitely ticks all the boxes. Thank you again :-)

Beautiful creatures ❤
The best friend you can have 😍😍
Our lurcher used to love to sleep on the bed between us but we discovered he had "sleep startle" and it was too scary not knowing if he'd lash out unknowingly and take your ear off! So he now has full residency on the couch which suits him very well thank you. Shame, he's such a naturally gentle soul...
Does anyone know if whippets are prone to this? I do know greyhounds are. My lurcher is a rescue so who knows what experiences he had before he found love with us.
Thanks Jude Louie and Rosie do a lot of sleep running in their sleep 😴 🙏👍😍

My husband wants a whippet we have 6 kids from 5 to 17 all are chilled not crazy hyper loud kids at all we live in a nice village with plenty of open space have a big garden and my husband is home all day every day me n the kids r out during the week and then we are all in most weekends would anyone recommend a whippet for us? Are they very bark happy as we live in a nice quiet could de sac with all elderly folk and we wouldn't want a dark that's going to annoy them or wake up the kids all hours.
Hi there you sound just the family to have a whippet they are very easy to look after and don’t bark must too. They love to sleep and would love a run around your garden
The only thing is recall when if their lead they are likely to chase small animals
Recall can be trained but whippets are great on a lead too
Do check out my other videos of when we got Rosie as a puppy 👍👍
@@onemanandhiswhippet thank you just want to make sure we get the right breed for our family I will give your videos a watch I've only just come accross this channel as my husband seen a lovely whippet on a re homing site and I thought I'd do some research.

They love a zoom and mine will walk as long as you want, but also likes a sleep and doesn’t like bad weather or puddles.
Yep 👍 thanks Keith 🙏😍
It's too bad that I don't have any fenced area for a Whippet to run freely near where I live. It's what's holding me back from getting one. Fingers crossed that my town makes a dog park or something 🙏
Oh no I hope yo find somewhere 🙏👍👍
❤ I wanted a female Doberman pinscher but my complex won’t allow a dog that heavy and physically intimidating :( ... so two whippets it is looking forward to it ... they are ideal for my lifestyle ...
👍👍👍👍
Awe, just love whippets, such loving dogs! Can't wait to get one later :)

I could never trust my girl off leash. If she saw something in the distance like a bunny she would watch it then as soon as it moved, off she would go and nothing I could do would stop her. But other than that she was my beautiful girl that I will keep in my heart forever 🙏🏼
🙏 they are such a big part of our lives 🙏😍😁
We adopted a 1 year old rescue whippet recently and he is a brilliant dog, however he constantly starts whining in the mornings .. like really early even though he is in our bedroom/it's warm and he doesn't need the toilet or anything (we let him out the first few days and he just keeps whining after). He gets a decent amount of exercise daily, mostly during the day and once we are up and move around the house, he actually goes back to his bed and chills/no whining. It seems he just wants us to get up... do you have any tips for us? How can we stop this behaviour?
Lol 😂 oh no that’s not good the key is to be in control if you respect to him whining he will very soon know how to get you to respond
The things to do are make sure he is covered in the crate, don’t let him out until it’s the right time for you, and when he whining Point at him look into he’s eyes and stay NO !

Yep that’s right they are sight hunters but like all dogs enjoy a good sniff too 😍👍👍
I have a greyhound whippet mix and he is a monkey but we love him ❤️
(He thinks he’s a goat help-)
Really our two are great 👍 is he getting a good run and long walks too? What food his he having? They are usually the two key areas to look at 😁🙏👍
Thought the same before we had ours feel like we have to drag him out for a walk most laziest breed ive had 🤣
😂👍👍

We have a blue Whippet 7 years old and for a dog that's bred for speed she is the laziest dog we've ever had....

How many people ask "is it fast?" or "can it run?" ......Also I got a new rescue puppy :)
Yep 👍 and oh wow good for you 🙏😍💕
Love your dogs and your videos

Oh my goodness... people who get Spaniels..Just WHY? They just never stop.
Worreting about, into everything, restless..just nope!
A Whippet is happy with some reasonable walks/runs, and then dozes the rest of the day.
Lol 😂
Where did people get the idea whippets need much excercise? They're such lazy dogs. Our whippet prefers to snuggle on the couch for most of the day. And so funny to see your whippet do the pirouette thing, ours does that too when she's excited :)
Lol 😂 that’s so true 🙏👍😍
You said “If you let them sleep in your bed”, we have no choice. We can bed Penny down in her bed but she sneaks in with us, waking us up being too hot!
Lol 😂 good on you Penny 😍
These dogs don't have a lot of body fat which means they burn themselves out really quickly a 10 minute dash does for them. Because of the lack of body fat they feel the cold so coats are necessary in winter. Please emphasise to your vet that they they don't metabolise (lack of body fat) anesthetic well so an experienced vet is essential for neutering.
My whippet comes camping in the tent with me and is a quiet calm companion. Best retirement dog ever ❤️
Great advice 😍👍🙏
Great advice 😍👍🙏
Love the zoomies at the end ... 🤭
My girls are permanently horizontal. lol 😊
Lol 😂 there’s nothing wrong with that they do give the best cuddles too 🙏👍👍
The main difference between my Whippet and the ones here is that my can't be off his lead...he was a rescue and his recall is awful. He has gotten better in enclosed fields, but we simply cant afford to pay 10 pound an hour each day to let him run
Louie had 4 home before Compton us you will get there it just take lots of time 🙏👍😍
@@onemanandhiswhippet are both of yours fixed? Ours is on the larger end of a whippet (half inch from being classed as a lurcher) and isn't fixed. I think that may be a big difference
Possibly and like people even dog is different too 🙏👍😍
If anyone thinks of getting a dog because ' it doesn't a lot of exercise ' They are deluded and will suppress the dogs happiness and fulfilment in life . My whippet is 10 and I walk him maybe 3 hrs per day. Plus car trips out to shops. Sure they love their duvets and warm cuddles by the fire but we need to either accept that our dogs deserve an active life , or take the decision to Not get a dog.
🙏😍😍😍
I know that road! 💪
Lol 😂 there’s no pub on there tho 😳
