- Today on Modern Builds, I'll show you how to make a mid century inspired side table / nightstand / end table from a couple of Maple 1x8's. The goal with this project was to build a relatively simple DIY project that looks a lot more complicated than it really is to build. The cool thing about it: I made every cut for this project with my Ryobi circular saw! The written step by step plans are available at RyobiNation, link below.

the level of sloppiness, lack of tools and end result destroyed all my excuses for not doing my nightstand project. You are insane!
Mike, can you show us where you put all of these amazing projects after you finish them? I would imagine that you have a pretty slick house/apt at this point!
Shop cat! Awesome project dude. Turned out great. Love that leather pull!
Haha! I heard you're not legit unless you have a cat running around all the time lol
Your straight edge was walnut..... my favorite species is not allowed to be used as a straight edge!!
Love this! As a guy just starting out with this sort of DIY, I really appreciate you making a project with more basic and affordable tools. Definitely gonna try this!
"A four-sided square" :). Great job - looks awesome!
Haha! Didn't even realize it until now
Actually a four sided rectangle.
Impressive what you can build with a circular saw! Great project mike! You think about everything, to the pocket holes facing the back of the table, and also love the simple plywood track.
Another great build, Mike. Nice work! You should invest in a good digital angle measure which you can use to make sure your blade is actually at 45 degrees, rather than relying on the manufacturer's gauge. I have one and it's great for mitres ("miters" in the US!)
I'd rather spend time in setup than in filling and sanding. I guess you don't hate sanding as much as most of us. :-P
Nice take on the side table and the leather pull is quite beautiful and simple! But those miters... :p Try to spend a few more time preparing the build and the power tools and I'm sure you will get much better results! I know it takes forever to get perfection (that's why I don't post as much as you do hahaha and sometimes it is very annoying to deal with my own personality) but note that you can grow as a maker, a person, a critic and artist if you spend some more time with the things and develop them in a more solid approach. It's always nice to put us to test :D Nice video, nonetheless!
I couldn't see myself using tape to put a cabinet made of miter joints. Belt clamps give way more pressure while holding it together till it dries.
Definitely going to try to make this with my dad for my room! What I would try to make is two tables (different hights) so that they could "slide" under eachother, but not fully. In that way I have two tables that I can use.
Btw, love your videos! So fun to watch with my dad who is a carpenter that makes furniture. Gives him loads of inspiration and tips and tricks!!:)
God damn, that leather handle is an amazing finishing touch. It's so simple but looks great on its own and really ties the piece together.
Thanks a lot man!
Nothing is perfect in this world, I think the builds you do are tops! Always great watching you do these projects!!
Mike, I'm curious on what you're using this for? Nightstand, end table, or side table? Nicely done brother
I dig projects like this, I have all these tools myself and the project turned out well. I think you appeal to a larger audience when. You do this and you make wood working seem more affordable and attainable. I know you have skills to do something fancier, but a lot more people can identify with a project like this.
Everything is awesome, even the miters. To be a great crafter is to be able to perfectly fix and hide imperfections, not To be perfect at your craft. Awesome job as usual.
Damn, that leather handle really pulls it all together, nice touch Mike! Keep it up!
Nice pun!!
This looks great. I'm always impressed with what you are able to accomplish without tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools. Very inspirational.
I had the same issue with the circular saw and table saw not being perfectly at 45 degrees, I used my miter saw and used a 2x2 piece of wood to make a perfectly cut 45 degree triangle and I use that to check my circular and table saws to ensure they are as close to 45 degrees as possible.
Mike, do you sell all of the products you make on a weekly basis or do you just make them for yourself?
Mostly for myself of friends/family
Modern Builds Do you make products for clients then that you don't show to us? Just trying to work out if RUclips or clients is your main source of income. (If that's not too personal of a question to ask)
I'm about to make 2 of these soon. I already made the mid-century modern tv stand on your channel but added my own flavor. I gotta say I am in love with the piece and this piece with the tv stand is going to be fire! Thanks Mike!
Sweet build man - awesome to see how cool the legs came out with just the saw. I literally just did something like this doing miters with the circular saw and damn is hard to get exactly 45° so props for getting as close as you did haha. Definitely can be done (as you demonstrated), but I think like all limited tool stuff, you gotta be open to things not being perfect. Cheers
yeah, I saw that on your shelf build! I think you're right on with that point on the limited tool stuff
Very nice. Great job! You could cut the legs with some curves and it would change the look a bit.
I'm assuming you checked to see if the 45 on your saw is actually 45? I don't trust those even on my much pricier saw. That's probably why your miters were off.
Cool simple project :) and it's nice to see a builder that admit and shows his/her failures and learn from it
Hmm I might do this in white oak or walnut
COOL !!!!
Love the vid and channel! Can’t find the plans anywhere though (tried the Ryobi Nation link). Know where I can find them?
Got my stickers from ya the other day. Thanks for the bonus and the nice personal note! Keep up the awesome videos!
Any way to potentially get your miters to actually be 45?. Maybe borrow an angle gauge and make a 45* jig that you can use to set your saw, instead of relying on the markings on the saw itself?
The miters are great considering you only used your circular saw
Mike, this turned out AWESOME! Love the maple choice and all of the details, leather pull, etc. solid build!
not sure if its my computer /screen settings, but the majority of the exposure seemed blown out a bit so might recommend bringing it down an exposure or two, and the text where it said the steps I couldn't read, maybe a better contrasting color ?
Hi! The link for the Written step by step plans doesn't work 😢 I would love to have them. Great work!
Cut your miters at 44.9° and you'll have a lot better luck with the outside corner touching.
Fantastic build, it has been cool to see the types of projects you do grow as your channel has grown.
ok, I'm not going crazy, this table doesn't have a back, right? can we leave it wide open? i'd love to
Great job bro, live the drawer slides, I too enjoy making my own.
nice build mike it looks great.
I checked out your website looks good.
The link for the plans are unavailable, is there some other way to possibly get them? Thanks
Great design! Did you use any edge banding?
This guy needs a TV show on HGTV sponsored by Ryobi of course :)
is the back of the table just the back of the drawer? or did you cut a piece of board an sealed the back hole?
Cool build Mike. Sweet drawer pull. Mid Century ROCKS!
Could you make a joinery video? I've noticed you like using dowels. I think making a video showing us the many uses of different joinery would be cool.
really like the projecr. How did you get the miters wrong if you cutted everything ordered? :-)
Nice build, simplified without complicated joints. I think you can blame your miters on the saw, I don't think it's very accurate. I upgraded my miter saw from 10"king Canada brand to 12" dewalt and it made a huge difference. You can still cut things wrong with it but it's just much more precise when you do :) cheers.
Like you said Mike not your best work but it looks good and I like it I like the wooden drawer slides and the leather Pole the maple was a good choice
Are those harbor freight bar clamps? Do you like them? They're so much cheaper than other ones I just want to make sure they're worth it! Great build! Impressive work with only a cordless circular.
Straight forward build! Awesome work!
Wow its hot outside, cant think of anything to..... Yay!!! New modern builds video
WHERE did you get the wooden plugs for the pocket holes???
Congrats you made 49 on the Trending List!!!!!! 😀
Hey!! That's awesome
Love the maple. Very clean simple design. Looks fantastic. Great job.
Nice looking end table. I like the leather strap. I've seen it before but not many places. Good choice on that for the pull
Thanks Bruce. Yeah, for the 5 minutes it took to make I think it's really cool
the link to the plans lead to a 404 error on RyobiNation
A tip on the miters that I never knew until recently: cut slightly over 45 deg by about 0.5 deg. This will ensure that the outside edges touch at the corners.
Beautiful and simple, really inspiring as always!
Dude. I'm no expert but that is positively a try square not a marking gauge.
Really cool making it all with a circular saw. And I like how the leather draw pull turned out. Very cool
Thanks brother!
Great video! I love how you run into issues like I do like not having masking tape and used dowels to reinforce a not so perfect miter which is always my issue! Thanks for a great video!
Anyone have experience with the Ryobi cordless hammer drill? I need to do some furring and have several of the 18v cordless already.
Awesome side table mike! 😏 It would look great beside my bed !!
How much would all the equipment cost?
Hope did Mike make the little inserts for the holes he drilled ?
Shut up…. Where can i buy this?
Marking Gauge = Sliding T-Bevel
Looks nice. That's why I usually pick up a roll of blue tape every time
Rad build brother! I like that leather pull. Thanks for sharing.
P.S. I'm excited to see your super expensive mirror build.
Haha! Soon
By the way - @modernbuilds on Twitter is not an official account.
Man that is a nice build bro.. idea, do you think that you could do one of these and put a wireless charger build into the top so you could charge your devices.
That would be really cool!
Really nice, sleek design. I think a mod of this would do great double duty as a cable hider.
Definitely interested in building this, but do you have a more detailed cutlist with measurements?
Love your creativity man! Try using epoxy and sawdust sometime. See how you like it! I find it looks a little more natural. Good stuff.
Can you come over and build furniture with me forever
hey man love the videos.. you make things very easy to understand except one thing that always confuses me is what angle do you cut the leg parts
Hi Mike
How are you?
Great job and beautiful project as others.
Congratulations.
Great job Mike! Looks realy awesome!
Congrats!
I wish I was more handy! Would love to try and make this. Can I pay you to make it!? Do you have an Etsy?
Youz a cutie :) sorry it's irrelevant but just wanted to get that out. Btw nice side table
You should take woodworking classes! Not that you aren't good, on the contrary, I think you could become a great furniture maker! And don't worry for your mitters, these are difficult, specially with wood. I made some similar boxes on the CNC, and even though all was perfect (angles, measurements, etc...) I still had a hard time in the glue up. Everything must be 100% square and your wood must be perfectly planed otherwise you will have gaps. But otherwise I think you have guts for attempting complicated projects with minimal tools, and I frankly like your attention to detail and your practical thinking
Yeah, I think it'd be cool to take some classes and learn some more... Although I don't want to make my projects too complicated or involved that people like me can't build them haha
Modern Builds could you explain what you could have done to get the mitered corners more flush? Circular saw was at 45 and you used a fence...
was it really exactly 45 degrees? if its a little off you get gaps. was the straight edge 100% straight? if not you also get gaps. I didnt chose to use a CNC, it was just how we had to do it in school. I would have used a table saw i recon... CNC's are just plain boring
Although power tools have the degrees marked for you to slide the blade, they are 99.9% of the time wrong. I mean, the scale is not wrong, the place you position the blade is. Unless the power tool has some sort of stop step that engages when you run near the 45degree angle, you will never be able to place in the "right" place. I always grab a triangle square that is reliable (geometry class Aristo is perfect) and put it against the base plate of the saw until the angle is perfectly matched. Basically, I ignore the numbers in the scale because they are not useful when you need precision. And always try the angle on scrap pieces before going to the actual work. And support your work piece fully on the table, over, for example, some insolation foam. I would never get good results making it like Mike did :p with one single hand in the tool and another one trying to catch the falling piece...that will create wobbling and inconsistent cuts.
table saw and double checking your support across the piece, when doing angles like that, its really a job for a table saw. I've done exactly what Mike did when making some floating shelfs and got the same uneven results.
Looks good man. What is the darker strip at the front of the cabinet? It almost looks like a different color wood.
Thanks man! it's just a stripe in the grain of the wood. I thought it looked cool so I made it towards the front of the piece to show it off
congrats on 400k, love your projects and videos, they're so interesting and entertaining
Thanks a lot!! I appreciate it
How do I get the plans for this ?
What is the color of the leather you used? Great build, looks awesome, as usual.
Nice limited tools project.
What is the model and brand of your makita? 0:41 please.
write what model your saw has
سخيف 🤪
Thanks for sharing. Can you share the dimensions of the project?
👏🏻 simplemente hermoso yo lo quiero 😍 te felicito eres muy muy bueno en lo que haces 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤗.
leather and colour of the wood match perfectly....thanks for sharing with us
Cat supervised 😉!
can tell you what happen to the 45 angle 0:49
nexttime you could put some fomecore under..or some other wood. ;)
Where do you get your outro songs
That's a bevel square
3:49 a 4 sided square lol
No way that drawer opens without pulling the whole stand with it
Looks great, man. Those mitered/beveled long edges are tough to get perfect.
😍
