My normal attention span on YT is about 20mins. I don’t know what it is about your road trips but I watch each one beginning to end no matter how long , and I don’t even own a EV. I think it’s your enthusiasm and go with the flow attitude that makes it so absorbing to watch. Great vlog again.
I watched it 3 times youtube loves kyle
Two years after I first watched this video and I’m watching it again as I’m closer to buying my first EV. I’ve gained much knowledge from watching Kyle and Bjorn and love the whole electrification issue. It’s all going to improve.
"Really nice sunset over the Walmart" is the most quintessential American phrase I've seen on a RUclips video.
I’m a resident of Kansas and love seeing the spots he charges at. I like the enthusiasm he has on these trips. Plus he is way more brave than I am with my EV so far. He will jump in a car with 15% charge, a destination at 250 miles away, and announce, “ I’ll make it with -78% battery life when I get there. It will be just fine!” Lol
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
I’m from Kansas too
This video is 3 years old and give me so much knowledge! Thanks!
I’m not gonna lie. You are the reason I preordered an ID.4!

Kyle, thanks for giving our Homewood Suites in Salina the thumbs up! You’re right - it is new, as is our downtown renovation. On your next stay try to have dinner at YaYas at the hotel and have a cocktail after at the fire pit in the courtyard. And yay PlugShare (small credit - I’m the one who added it. 😉
David you deserve a raise.
This really makes me appreciate the awesome network of high power chargers we have in Norway. They are almost always in vicinity of a service station as well, so getting food is easy.
Norway is a tiny little country compared to the US.
This is one of the better road trips that you've done where the charging infrastructure didn't let you down as in the past. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
@out of spec motoring I bought my wife an ID.4 Pro last week. We will be road tripping from metro Detroit to Louisville for July 4th. We decided to give a local Electrify America station a try tonight so that we aren't charging newbies on the road trip, and we ran into a guy who works in marketing for VW charging up his Pro S. He knows you! We had a little chat about your experiences with the Pro on this trip. When we got to the EA station there was a Mach E, a Taycan, and his Pro S. We took the last spot with our VW.
These long-road-trip videos in BEVs are invaluable to many of us, Kyle. Thanks for doing them, and please keep doing them as the public-charging infrastructure slowly builds out and becomes more reliable. My experience is owning two PHEVs but am eagerly looking forward to getting my first BEV, though I do a lot of long-distance, cross-country road trips to see family each year. I hope that the charging companies (like EA) and the non-Tesla automakers are watching your videos, also -- because they should be. I like all the charging details that you go through when stopped at a charging station; it's very educational. But I fear that the average person isn't going to be able to navigate the poor public-charging infrastructure as it now stands: it really takes somebody that's really into BEVs to do trips like this, and somebody with patience (and if there are any passengers, those passengers need to be like-minded!). Very few of my family members would put up with all this on a trip with me -- the uncertainty, the unreliability, the having to drive to empty parking lots in dicey areas after dark, etc.
I own a VW ID.4 Pro S. My first EV! My wife and both didn't like how small the Model 3 was inside.
The VW shaded sunroof is so much nicer than the Model 3. Overall we are happy we went with the ID.4
Great cross country review.
What made you not choose the model y? Price I’m not sure how much the vw runs
@@warhammerfaction We both fell in love with the ID4... The sunshade & body style of the ID4 much nicer than the Tesla.

I find myself constantly leaving videos. Almost a bit of ADD. Somehow I made it to the end of this video without skipping any of it. I struggle with 10 minute videos, here is a 90 minute video that was amazing. Thank you!

Middle Tennessee has been heavily developed with charging stations for nearly 15 years. Nissan has a massive factory there, and did much of their Leaf testing in the area. Those people who iced out that charging station knew exactly what they were doing. Still, it was nice of you to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Exactly right!
Hi, I watch this channel from Germany. I like these road trip videos because I can look at various electric cars and still see some of the beautiful landscape in the USA. I am still not sure which car I will buy. Keep it up!
At least ID.4 has free configurability now and you don't have to buy the expensive Tech/Max to get travel assist. 😅
i Was just thinking how much i wished Kyle would do a road trip in the ID4..You read my mind!
Just did a 467 mile trip today from Tampa to Atlanta in a Tesla Model Y and the trip was flawless with AP and the Tesla supercharging network is just brilliant! No apps or cards or wallet to fumble it. Just plug the car and boom, power flows. That is the main reason I would not mess with any other EV brand.
It really isn’t hard I just click on Apple wallet and my ea pass is in their already I tap it next to card reader and it starts no swiping or fumbling. I’d 4 will have plug and charge this fall so you wont be able to brag.

I've been waiting for this video. I just traded in my 2017 Bolt for a new ID.4 1st Edition. The main reason was the charging curve for road tripping. I loved the Bolt and as long as you're not going too far it's a great vehicle. The charging speed is too much. Chevy missed the boat when they didn't update the charging for the new model refresh. That's what nudged me to the ID.4. So far, I have to say, I love the vehicle.
22 Bolt was a disappointment due to Chevy keeping the 50KW/H CSS charge speed.
@@gazzyT644 BMW i3 could also be so much better with improved charging speed, but Kia/Hyundai are killing it, true next level stuff.
I haven’t done it yet but the charge speed and the free charging is probably going to push me to id4 pro. It would be cool to get supercruise
@@abraxastulammo9940 only problem with Kia/Hyundai is cars only sold in zev states unless it is used
Yeah... I think that Chevy doesn't focus on the right things. Offering faster charging would be good. But they probably didn't want to spend more money on new charging parts for the car.
Kyle: may have drank too much last night, not feeling my best, need some recovery time.
Also Kyle: Feeling great though!
Haha it's the honesty that makes these videos great.
Besides there is his comedy style: "the bugs are squished on the front of the car which makes it a very good road trips one".
Man, so glad to see the road trips back again! I’ve missed these!
Went to Galpin Ford and test drove one, then the salesman tells me the are a limited supply so they’ve been marked up $5,000. I told him forget it, I’ll get a Tesla. I’m sick of dealerships. Everyone pays the same at Tesla, no games.
I have been driving my ID4 for almost a month already and I absolutely love this car. Some people need to understand that not all EVs are sports cars. We are getting a Tesla Model 3 delivered next week. So far loving the ID4 it is a nice drive. And looks very nice too!!!
The fit, finish, interior and equipment on the 3 is junk. Not even an energy saving heater, just a resistive one that sucks your battery juice down.

You want to keep the “flap” because it’s important to use when charging L2 in the elements to keep rain and debris out of the DC pins.
I came to the comment section to write the same thing. Thanks! The cover is not silly, it protects from rain when you AC charge outside in rainy days. Tesla Europe offer CCS ports and do not cover the DC, most people buy these covers extra.
After all the videos watched on your charging demos, the moral of the story is to NEVER walk away as that guarantees an error! 😎
You just have to back away very slowly while staring at the charger. Then it won't feel abandoned.
😄😄
Kyle, I really enjoy your enthusiasm and expertise. You are providing a great service for those new to EV's
I love how patient you are, you’re positivity with what is frankly a very unreliable charging network. I’m still personally deciding what EV I want to go with. Even though on paper I like Ford‘s offerings more, every time I watch one of your videos I get more convinced the only practical EV to own in America right now is a Tesla. Especially if you’re living in apartments.
You're not wrong, but it will get better. The question is can you power through for 2-3 years until it happens with a Ford F150 Lightning? Also note that the charge curve on the MachE is terrible per one of his other videos so you also want to make sure the F150 doesn't have the same problem. Finally, as he mentioned, there is no free market answer to better charging networks today so it might not happen in 2-3 years.
I agree with you, charging with a Tesla is so simple. In the case of this road trip from Florida To Colorado, with Tesla you just enter the final destination and the display will show you the full itinerary with all the superchargers where you will have to stop.
In comparison the VW interior display map is not directly connected to the Electrify America network. I wish this video was showing how to use the navigation to go from charger to charger. I honestly didn't learn anything new on how to use the VW navigation with this video. A lot of talk but no real explanations on using the navigation. When using the VW ID.4 on a trip I had to use some Apps on my phone like 'A Better Route Planner' or 'Electrify America' to plan my trip.
The ID.4 navigation display is not very useful, I felt using an old flip phone, in comparison the Tesla navigation display is like using an iPhone or an iMac. I hope that VW will improve the display, so far I prefer using Google Map on my phone when driving an ID.4.
It depends though. There is no absolute answer to which one is the best. Many people choose ID 4 over Teslas and Mach E for some legit reasons and vise versa.
@@jonpetter8921 I agree with you on paper. Features, styling, etc. But in terms of practically being able to charge, when you don’t own a home, the only workable option seems to be Tesla. These EA stations seem to be unreliable at best and poorly designed at worst.
@@NEAR_Photo I can’t charge at home and I use ea with never a problem. I use chargepoint and Greenlots 6 years I don’t want or need a Tesla . You cant watch one video and make that kind of move.
Awesome video. Your reviews helped seal the deal with my ID4 purchase. It’s a great ride. Keep up the good work.

Me too, but bummed that you can’t order gray interior , only black. Black isn’t bad but I don’t like the brown on the dash and whatnot that comes with the black interior.
Found this video an excellent and very Frank introduction to road tripping and charger operation. Clearly the trip planning puts charging stations and the next charge a preoccupation. And the wrinkles involved that you’d never think of if you haven’t driven all-electric are put in front of you. Personally, the complications of all electric make me very happy I bought a hybrid.
A movie length video. Took two days to finish it. Great video with a lot of energy and optimism. I fully enjoyed it.

Thank you for doing this! So many other reviewers are short less than a week with the car driving around their town. I love your channel doing the road trips. It helps install some confidence in using an EV on longer journeys. I have owned 2 other EVs in the past Leaf & eGolf and their limited range especially on the highway meant I was relegated to in-town car trips. I am currently looking at the ID4
Dude, your energy and positivity is impressive, always love your reviews and all the technical details you provide. Also, I love that color - keep it up!
These CCS adventure road trips are my favorite! Really cool to see the growth of the CCS network and the massive improvement in EA since 2019. They've still got a ways to go but it's moving quickly. Homewood Suites looks like the place to stay. Kyle is gonna lose his mind with the charging speeds on the new Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
I love the fact that your getting a solid lane assist system in this. The E Tron charges more for that over the base model. Great video so far, I love these. Im a model Y owner but want to get another EV one day and the VW offering is looking better by the day
Only if solid means incredibly buggy. The system didn't stop for stopped traffic and I was almost in an accident with it. I've never had AP do anything that dangerous.
@@domg7359 I’ve had AP stop or slow so quickly that it almost put me through windshield when another car, that wasn’t a collision threat, turned left in front of me coming out of side street to my right with plenty of time to spare. AP can greatly overreact too.

Greetings from Nashville, hope you enjoyed our version of a mountain pass coming from Chattanooga (btw Chattanoogans pronounce the t's). We bought a cancelled reservation 1st edition, partly due to your reviews, 7 weeks ago and have driven 6k miles! It was fun to watch you hit some of the same stations! We're about to do another 2k going down to FL and it was nice to see some more of the stations we'll be using.
And YES, the charge speed is based on the GOM. I've had 128kW read anywhere from 6-8 mi/min.
And and, I have also had stations randomly peak at 75-90, sometimes dropping down minutes after hitting 127+ (well below 40% SoC). Replugging doesn't seem to resolve so I've taken to just immediately changing stations.
Another really informative video, Kyle -Thanks! I've had my ID.4 for about two months now, but still haven't tried EA (not needed, and no charger near me). But I am hoping to do a road trip this summer so I really appreciated the insights and recommendations. Thanks also for the positive attitude that celebrates cars and driving -as opposed to the negative crap and snark that so many reviewers seem to thrive on. Can't wait for your next ID.4 video!

Most important learn!- meshing the food/coffee strategy with the charging strategy. Step 1- if food/coffee isn't within walking distance, pick up first...
Kyle is such a trooper and so patient dealing with all these EV charging issues. If it were me, I'd be cussing, kicking and mad at the world wanting to return my EV to the dealership and just go back to a gas car.
These struggles only occur on road trips. For daily driving, you'll spend zero time at a DC charging station. You plug in at home each night like you would your cell phone, wake up to a fully charged vehicle. Most drivers do only one or two longer than 250 mile trips a year, so this issue is almost non-existent.
I love these road trip videos! ❤️
Ok I ordered one. Wife hated regen on Rivian. Seems like a good transition car. I want a y but going to save 18k id4proS. Hoping to get 7500 tax incentive made in TN
It seems like both the Mach-E and ID.4 both have issues with EA - which tells me that the problem is with the network, not the cars. They need to get it together if EVs are going to proliferate.
@@GoogleDoesEvil is it that expensive? Tesla superchargers cost half as much as gas.
@@GoogleDoesEvil in the video it was showing 3.3 miles per kwh. So the price is around $8. VW comes with free charging though. Also civic is not a SUV. Tiguan mpg is 24.
@@GoogleDoesEvil you make good points and I agree, if you are charging all the time on these fast chargers it's not a ton cheaper. Some ev's are more efficient than others. Model 3 gets more like 4 miles per kWh real world. If I charge at home I've calculated my model Y costs me about 6$ for every three hours of hiway driving. Supercharging is closer to gas for sure but 95% of my charging happens at home. It's very user specific. Pros and cons to both. I also learned an amazing fact today. It takes between 5 and 12 kWh or electricity to refine one gallon of fuel so when you start to think about how far you ev would drive just on the power that it takes to refine gas it kinda makes you think. Also gas won't be 3$ forever. Where I live its 5$ and has gone up 30% since Christmas.

Another epic road trip from Out of Spec Motoring. You keep such a positive attitude on long road trips... I could never manage to do that. The fees on that Blink charger was completely exorbitant! I pay .05 per kWh during off peak charging at home. Glad you found good Zaxby's... all the ones here in Oklahoma are the worst. VW really needs to address the infotainment screen lag. I have 5 year old Android tablets that respond faster than this.
I was reluctant to order an ID.4 Pro until about a week ago when I found out that waving my hand past the proximity sensor on the center screen works far better than swiping left or right with my finger! Also, just touching the little menu button on the left side of the screen flips back-and-forth between the two main screens flawlessly.

Now that I've watched your video, I feel that I will be able to accomplish this. We love our VW; what a great ride.
FYI: you can add your EA account to your Apple Wallet. Then you can forgo the app. Came in handy when the app tried to initiate the wrong station and could just not be stopped.
Apple wallet and tap to pay works great. I've been using it on my 2800 mile trip.
I honestly don't know what I did on my Samsung phone but tap to pay is also working perfectly. No opening of any apps. Loving it!!!
When I had my 2020 Leaf and was using EA chargers, this was a lifesaver. When they rebuilt their app from scratch several months ago it was nearly unusable to completely unusable. So much frustration but eventually I was able to get the Apple Wallet pass installed, then never had to use that app again.

Maybe you have done it on your other videos but it would be nice for future EV owners to know about how long you are at each stop in the video description or something like that. I know it "should" be 30 minutes or so but with the issues from time to time, it would be nice to be able to figure out real stop time at each location. Thank you much for your time putting these together and making comfortable to be willing to move to an EV
30 minutes at 100 kw is 50 kwh, which is 2/3 of the battery capacity of the ID.4. Most of his charging stops - assuming no glitches - were less than 30 minutes duration.
Great video - looking forward to the charging specs when they update to 170kw!
Nice! I haven’t seen that updated charging speed, where did you find that? Please share! 🙂
As this is the exact model coming to a driveway near me, I feel like this is a learner's guide. I've watched two full times and bits and pieces of it a few more. Thanks for putting in the miles
This is everything that I want in an electric vehicle. I really want a SUV. Thank you for the content.
Love the ID.4 content Kyle! Keep it up!
This is appointment viewing at my house. This was excellent. 😁
The EA charging issues are going to be INFURIATING to your average Joe who doesn't nerd out about watching the car charge.
It's ridiculous. They have to improve this infrastructure. The fact that EA is the main option is not good enough for mass adoption of EVs. Anecdotal, but I do a lot of charging at superchargers and I've done at least 10+ 500 mile roadtrips in my Model 3 and have experienced charging issues twice.
@@advosburgh that’s the problem you Tesla owners think everything is about you elon and other evs came before the model s. We are lucky to have ea. Other networks will add too it . When I got my EV in 2012 we had 4 dc chargers now 95 in my city. Why are you watching a non Tesla video. I don’t need Tesla owners to pile on bout how a company that started in 2012 installing superchargers for 1 car can be compared to a 3 year old comp with 3 diff. Charging manufacturers that need to work for all evs not just Tesla
I'm completely new to EV road tripping and have found EA to be absolutely fantastic! Glad I got the VW and the free charging
@@markfitzpatrick6692 we are just saying the EA charging issues are unacceptable. If the supercharger network is so much more reliable, EA should be able to be better at this point in time.
Uh, a Tesla can charge from near zero to 80% in about 15 minutes at a DC Fast Charging station. The new Hyundai Ionic 5 will have the same capability. The charging technology and battery capacity will greatly improve in the next few years. Plus, there is no maintenance on these cars except for regular break service.
Pretty fun to watch this kind of thing. I worked on the J1772 and J2836 standards.
Thanks for sharing a great instructional adventure. It illustrated the importance of fast charging. Very well done video. Did you make a summary of the trip? Total time to charging, total energy spent, Average miles per KW, etc?.... Thanks again!
