This review of the Sony BDP-S3700 Blu-ray Player sees more of the same with a pleasant surprise. More on the pleasant surprise later. Sony keeps the connectivity really simple with one HDMI port, a digital audio output, a ethernet connection, wi-fi and a USB port on the front. Sony continues with their simple, or boring, depending on your opinion, design from lat year. This is the exact same look and dimensions for all of their blu-ray players. There is nothing creative about the User interface, it is completely utilitarian. And you what, it works. It is simple, direct and easy. The included remote is also the exact same remote model that comes with all other Sony Blu-ray players for the 2016 model year. This works well and is easy to navigate.
As a blu-ray disc player and a streaming device this gets the job done on an HD TV, but without 4K upscaling the image looks pixelated on a 4K TV. The pleasant surprise comes with the ability of the BDP-S3700 to play games impressively well. It allows you to play PS3 games online. Game play and control is really smooth and responsive. This experience is a significant improvement over last year’s model.
When it comes to streaming, I was happy with the selection of streaming services. Netflix and Amazon prime performed well.
For $90, the Sony BDP-S3700 Blu-ray disc player is actually a better deal than the 2015 Apple TV. It has the best HD quality in Blu-ray, 99% of all streaming services, and it offers a superior gaming experience.
Sony should do a better job of promoting its Blu-ray players, because they are offering great tech at a bargain price.

You mentioned that it has no 4k upscale function. This isn't needed as your Sony 4K TV will take very good care of the upscaling. I've seen it mentioned a few times that if if you have both a 4K TV and a blu ray player that can upscale to 4k then the feature should be turned off on the blu ray player and allow the TV to take care of it as it's usually better.
you forgot to mention its amazing mirroring capability. my favorite feature.
Thanks for the input and I apologize for the previous rude comments from others. I truly thank you for the time you've given to provide information on the product. The main reason I've checked out your video is because, I'm checking to see if the apps on the DVD player automatically updates. I've purchased discounted devices like generic Roku devices and cheap DVD players, and what I've found is that the apps do not upgrade. And so, if the app does not upgrade, the device soon becomes obsolete and outdated quickly. I did not find what I was looking for but thanks again for the video.
Even with the upgrades, the review does not provide the information that I'm looking for. If an app that is available on the device cannot regularly upgrade, the app soon becomes unusable. And so, as the available apps become unusable, the usage of the device becomes severely limited.
Again I thank you for the updated info and I hope the producers of this Blue Ray player work to make it more consumer friendly by allowing updates for the apps and not allowing the product to become obsolete.

This video is nearly 4 years old yet this model is still available at Best Buy. WTH?
its because some things dont need upgrading, gets the job done. sure it gets updates, but the quality of the disks and the hardware is still hd. the headset i am wearing was released in 2004, and it still is available.
I purchased this yesterday to replace older Sony player. It says it has network connection but no internet, and it needs an update. Even used Ethernet wired and cannot get the update. Sony help site will not load on computer or phone. Hope everyone else has better luck. Mine is going back to the store.

I just order one of these units off eBay as an open box . But what the difference of this unit BDP - S3700 and the BDP - BX370? They both seem to have the same features and the same price range. Is one the newer version bc the also look the same physically.

I've heard there is problems with the child lock feature. is there a way to avoid it? I'm sure those who had problems with it didn't intend to use it and got their movie stuck inside.
I have not heard of this issue, however you should be able to reset the Parental Control Settings in the Setup menu.

The eject button won't work on this player. I get an error message that says the child lock mode is on. I have to disable it but there are no instructions for doing so.
sorry about the rude comment from the poster above. The child lock issue is a known glitch. I have read that the issue has been addressed with a software update. If you go into the settings, you should be able to update your software and that should fix the disk being locked in the unit issue.
Sooo...does it allow access to different sections of a long vid? How is that done with just the remote? The Google ChromeCast thing didn't work for me because I could only hit play and not pause or FF., etc..
I see in your review of the 3500, the background of the streaming media apps menu is blue and on the 3700 reviewed here, it is black. Is it possible to change the background color in the settings? Or did they just make the background black in the new model? I kind of dig the blue background.

Can you access a web browser? I want to use it for free range tv access from cable provider in a room in the house where I don't have cable hard wired in. I use the Blu-ray mostly for Netflix and sometimes RUclips but I would like to use it to watch my cable tv also via the wifi. How do I do this?

Does this model have a dual-core processor which I saw listed on the Sony website for the S6700 model but not the S3700? This helps make the menus smoother and more responsive to navigate.
I am hoping to get mine from Amazon tomorrow as a replacement for my Sony BDP-S3100 which seems to have issues playing some discs (usually Fox ones). One disappointment though is that this model still lacks dual band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi like the older Sony BDP-S570 I had. Of course, the top of the range S6700 has this but while I did originally have that one pre-ordered, it was delayed on the day it was supposed to launch here in the UK (or Amazon could not get the stock?) so I ended up opting for the S3700 instead. On reflection, the extra £60 for the S6700 would have been a waste of money as I have no need for 4K upscaling or 3D for that matter. I really only wanted the dual core and dual band Wi-Fi.
+Darren Hodgson (Doctor Hades) I was not able to find anything on Sony's US website that referenced which processor is used in the BDP-S3700. From my experience it is a solid Blu-ray player. This should work well for you since you do not need upscaling or 3D. Thanks for watching!!
i never had blu-ray player what is with that 4k up scaling does that mean on hd tv it is going to look very good and blu-ray player is going to stretch the video to fit the video to fit 4k screen and video is going to loo weird and 4k up scaling how its work can i turn of and on hd tv is picture is going to be 1080p normal and beautiful and from year do i buy blu - ray player are older players good i am going to first time buy blu - ray player so i need help
when your watching netflix lets say Cheers series it could take a whole week to watch the whole thing from season 1 episode 1 and it stops after every 2 episodes and asks "are you still watching cheers?" that is so irritating considering you can select any episode to start from . I have to get up reajust dig for the remote and start all over again.Than if i watch RUclips ater a while it shuts off and the on off button is pointless because you have to unplug the usb then turn on power, the power will not turn on unless the usb is unplugged first
Thanks for taking the time to review this. Do you have any comment on the child lock issue that a lot of amazon reviews are having issue with?? they say that it turns on automatically and they cannot turn it off to eject the disc.
It says it has access to 300+ apps but I can't figure out for the life of me how to download other apps. We watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, RUclips (youtube buffers a lot on movies) but I want to download more apps. How? I want to add Peacock, Discovery+, Disney+, etc
There is no app store. This model was made before disney+ came out. Many models have stopped supporting hulu and prime. You get what you get

Don't do it! DO NOT BUY IT!! It's completely faulty. I had this Players since christmas, worked fine until yesterday that become completely unresponsive. And as far as i know, there's no solution but replacing it.
Good review, it's weird Sony didn't have 4K upscaling like three other Blu-Ray Players. Question: While using PlayStation Now where you playing "The Last of Us" with an wired or wireless connection?

I want to know what video file types you can play through USB. The freaking Sony website doesn't even say.
It plays back MKV and MP4 files very smoothly and also at 24p.

Yes it can play 1080p mkv, actually almost every type of video file which I have tested, it was playable.
Manufacturers' websites are always horrible. I don't know why that is.

I planned on moving my Roku stick to another TV in place of this, but since this doesn't have the Slingplayer app like Roku does, I will use both in conjunction on the same TV. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, but my TV is a Toshiba 40 inch 1080p, not smart though, will I be able to utilize MiraCast in this scenario with the S3700? Yes, you should be able to use Miracast with the Note 4. I wish Sony would have at least included the app for Playstation Vue to their Blu-ray players. Thanks for watching!

If the image looks pixelated on your 4K TV than that’s your TVs fault not the source resolutions or the players. A TV should be able to upscale to 4K from 1080p without any rugged edges.
Can you do a video of how to stream games or guides of how to play games in this device
Just got mine today as a gift from my girlfriend. After playing with it for two hours I like it. Few questions: 1-I didn't see nba app on mine, but there is one on your system. 2-Also I didn't see hbo app on it, but I don't think it's included in the update. 3-Do you have any videos how to play games on it or how to do mirroring? the Major problem with ALL sony bluray players that offer streaming apps is that sony Will Discontinue and Drop the apps after you have bought the player...You will see Prime and or netflix Dissapearing from ur lineup ..sony does this with no warning and its really terrible that they do this.. people buy a player like this becuz it Has certain apps..then you find sony removes them and there no way to get them back! I dont know if other manufacturers do this but its happenned to me and people in the comments...Be warned!

Yes, you can play PS3 games. I am not sure if the games are from the PS2.

+Oscar H It does have the capability to stream at 1080p, but I did not test this specific function. Even though people don't think of Blu-ray players a good streaming boxes, you will not be disappointed.

I don't know the lingo - I want to use the ps3 feature of the dvd player. It won't work wireless so what type of game controller works - PlayStation 3 Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller (Black) - something like this?
You will need to connect a PS3 controller using a USB cable. The Sony BDP-S3700 does not have Bluetooth for wireless connections.
Does it have the web browser like the BDP-BX350 did?
Might as well buy a ps3 for cheaper than this that can do more. Unless you are bothered about the mirroring app. this box is slow at responding with the remote control, and when you turn it off, if you press slightly too hard it comes back on again

It is improved, but whether or not it is worth upgrading that depends on your level of patience. Faster loading times always help.

The improvement in speeds have tapered off, but this year's model are plenty fast.

nice review. I have always been a Sony fan but it seems in recent years, they have gotten a little boring. Back in the day, they used to be at The Cutting Edge of Technology. now it seems that they keep their same remote designs around for a long time and have gone the route of the boring, "Googleisation" as I call it of design.. that goes for their physical design of the units themselves and the software designed. It seems that super super simple and super super boring is in these days when it comes to design. I'm not digging it. But I do like all the features this unit has and will definitely be at the top of my list when choosing a new Blu-ray player / streaming media player. Thanks for the honest and informative review.

Depending on how far you will be sitting from the screen, I would suggest picking a 40-55" 1080p TV.

You personally are you a streamer or blu ray guy? Im going back n forth on rather to invest in a 4k player.
+The insite It depends. Most of the time I prefer Blu-ray when watching action and sci-fi movies. It especially matters when watching a 4K TV. The pixelation that can happen when streaming can be distracting. If you have a 4K TV that is 60"+ you will appreciate the improved image quality.
