A premier lap from Bottas. He is showing distinct assertiveness and skill at Baku. He's taking the fight to competitors in this world-class sport called Formula 1.
Brilliant lap. The exit out of that final corner shows how much time you can gain on a long straight by getting the exit right. On the last corner, he was 0.34s up on his previous time and by the end of the final straight, he was 0.68s up. Absolutely nailed that final sector to take pole.
Paul: it's his opinion about this being the smoothest lap ever; but i too did feel it was a lap of amazement and we saw a driver and car at one with each other. The flow and rhythm bottas had on this lap is clear to see.
Don't conflate "smoothest" with "greatest". Not the same thing by a long shot. What impressed about this lap was how smooth it was yet still fast enough for pole. Thought is was an out-lap at first. A notably special lap for sure.
I think the positioning of the mic in 2014-2017 missed what was actually heard by drivers and people at the track. I think now 2018-2019 is more accurate to what is heard on track. Although I do prefer the combination of both in 2018

Okay, Mercedes can have the Constructors Championship but as a pretty neutral fan I want these things to happen during the season, please: 1. Bottas wins Drivers Championship. 2. At least one win for Vettel and Leclerc each. 3. Ricciardo gets at least one podium. 4. Raikkonen gets at least one podium. 5. Kubica scores points. 6. Michael Schumacher’s health improves.

Yeah there was no meaningful tow with the car in front of Bottas being 4-5 seconds ahead. In the old days slipstreaming/towing meant the other car was about 1 sec ahead.
