  • Hey all! John here.
    In this video I talk about adding more NVMe SSDs to my existing TrueNAS Server and explain how to configure a 10GBe NIC without a switch using static IPs on both ends and show how to map the SMB share. I will be using this new storage so I can ingest & edit video files faster while keeping the redundancy I need for my work.

    Nice project - good pace of video, very complete. For big data transfers like backups, do you see speed dropoffs without heat sinks on the NVMe SSDs after 300-400 GB copied locally at full speed?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for your support! Unfortunately, the max I copy is around 150GB and I don’t have any slowdowns because of the heat. The Dell UltraSpeed Quad does have a fan that cools down the NVME drives though.

    Can I give you unsolicited advice? I think the effort you are putting into this video is great. I suggest working on the audio. It echos quite a bit.
    You can fix this with a lab mic or using adobes audio normalizing software.

      Perfect, thanks for the feedback! I’ve been working on using a lav and learning about audio processing.
      Thanks again for your support!

    Question are you running both windows and truenas off of the same machine. If so can you explain how?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  8 месяцев назад

      I only have TrueNAS on my server. It isn't virtualized.
      My workstation (if you're referring to that) has Windows and Fedora installed on different SSDs.

    Can you not just use the 3.1 usb since it also has 10gb transfer speeds?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  2 месяца назад

      You could just connect the SSD directly into your PC over USB but I need the redundancy and all of my storage needs consolidated in one unit.

    Which card is that from Dell that hold 4 NVME drives?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  8 месяцев назад +1

      It’s the Dell UltraSpeed Quad. Should be $80 or less on eBay. Supports 4 NVMe drives as long as bifurcation is supported on your motherboard.

    Does the drive encryption slow down the process?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, it requires additional CPU horsepower.

    Which nvme HBA are you using?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  7 месяцев назад

      The PCIe “holder” for the NVMe drives is the Dell UltraSpeed Quad. Just an OEM part. You’ll need bifurcation support in your BIOS but that should be standard on all modern motherboards.

    Good video, you could have saved a few bucks and gone with the ASUS Hyper M.2, I’ve got a PCIE 3.0 version of the card for my dell 5820T that’s rack mounted. Cost me $47 new for the card. The dell card used was hovering at about $100 on eBay.

      Noice! It was my first time, so I just wanted to keep it OEM. I'll go with that part if I need a second card!

      @@johnstech7 did you have any issues with your slot not bifurcating automatically?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  2 месяца назад

      No issues on the 7820! I didn’t run into issues until I started using the R740xd, but it seems that can only go up to x8 or two SSDs per slot.

      Yeah the 7820 will be a much quieter system with similar performance specs.

    greetings from germany :)
    @John, u said: "its fast now"
    => BUT: with 10Gbit Lan and SSD i would expect 1000-1250 MB/s instead of "only" 400MB/s ... why is that that slow?

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  10 месяцев назад +1

      My CPU & encryption is most likely the bottleneck in this case, I'll do a followup after I get a Xeon Silver/Gold in the system!

    • @johnstech7
      @johnstech7  10 месяцев назад +5

      Hey there, following up! In this new video, I was able to hit that 10GbE target. The CPU was indeed the bottleneck in this case because I have 256bit AES enabled.
      If you leave encryption off, you will not need as much CPU power. Hope this helps!
