How good was Oliver Kahn actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Oliver Kahn who played for Bayern for most of his career, not only one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Oliver Kahn ranks and just how good he actually was.
He is the kind of Goalkeeper that would single handedly get his nation in a world cup final.
He is unstoppable
He did though didn’t he? I was too young to watch but I thought he carried Germany to the 2002 WC final.
and then end up conceding two shitty goals
that would be zeti or rogério ceni my friend
Oh really
"Kahn was a beast in the goal."
*Shows him conceding goals*

No kidding! Goal after goal while calling him a world beater. Who edited this?

Same. I was like "Bro I know he was great I've seen a few of his matches, but I'll be damned if you didn't try to find every match where he conceded a goal."
Mehmet Scholl always said: "I am afraid of war and Oliver Kahn". He was a beast. Crazy. With no fear.

@@livinginspiredlife3819 dude we're just exaggerating, nobody is that stupid. Even 2 of me could score 10 goals against 1 Kahn.
You failed to mention the important fact that previous to Ronaldo's first goal, Kahn had broken one of his fingers when saving a shot from the very same Ronaldo. That broken finger made the difference.
had no idea tbh and when researching I didnt find anything about, crazy tho
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT yep it´s not that easy to find nor that well known to the world, but if you google it especifically, you´ll find a couple of news reporting this. Of Course Kahn said the broken finger played no part in that rebound but we all know he was just too much of a class act to blame the loss on a broken finger.
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT That is the thing isn't it. He alone lifted our rather poor national team in the finals but his stubbornness to retain the position instead of requesting a replacement due to injury also lost the final. And I'm not blaming him, without him Germany would have never gotten that far.
But we have to recognise that keeping the position was a mistake and there were good options like Jens Lehmann.
In the end Germany didn't deserve the title, didn't get the title and Kahn still played one hell of a cup.
Btw. you can see his broken finger patched up during post match interviews, lol you have footage yourself in this video: 16:26
@@Praxics0815 the Finger was not broken though that was a misreport, it was another Kind of injury.
Also he said millions of times that he didnt feel any pain after the first few seconds
Two things are false about your story.
1. It wad not a broken finger, it was a torn ligament in his finger.
2. It was not caused by ronaldo, it was during warm up, kahn felt little pain but thought it was nothing serious.
Germany has been blessed with some world class keepers and Kahn was nothing less than one of the greats. He hasn't possibly been talked about as much as he should have, but thats partly due to Neuer following on from him. He was similar to Scmeichel, where he often won the mind games with opposing strikers, with one-on-one situations and penalties.
Oliver Kahn inspired me to become a goalkeeper. Though I called it quits in pursuing my dreams after repeated shoulder and ankle injuries, I’ve always found it comforting to relive the days of dreaming and watching the man who inspired my journey.
These are the players who deserve a ballon d'Or

I don't, but that seems like the most Kahn thing ever
He argued that he thought the goalkeeper could touch the ball with the hands in both penalty areas
@@kobischpiek8520 I think that was a joke, even in the interview it sounded like a joke. Anyway, I think it reflects his determination, the ball had to go in, no matter how.
After the game he laughed about it and said "I always thought the goalkeeper was allowed to use his hands in the penalty area"
Really 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣? Khan indeed was humorous.
I watched him first in world cup 2002 and that made me a fan of Oliver Kahn and the German side... In my opinion, he's the best goalkeeper I've ever seen. 10/10 for the legend

...I came for a tactical analysis of how Khan changed the goalkeeper position, and stayed for a great retrospective! Great video!
Honestly ever since I saw Kahn back in 2004 in Germany his Goalkeeping always impressed me and I just think that he was a German Legend. Yes we might have Neuer now, but I like to believe, that just like me, Neuer watched Kahn and found him very inspirational. Kahn is a absolute Legend here in Germany, or atleast to the people I know. He is a true Titan, and could never be replaced - shame he never had a good German Team behind him. I´m pretty sure if he had the former German Team of 2010 - 2014 behind him, his Name would be way more recognized. But no matter - He is still one of the Best Keepers ever and he will keep inspiring the new Generation
well it´s funny cause apparently, Neuer´s idol was none other than Jens Lehmann lol, it´s funny cause Lehmann was NEVER as good as Oliver Kahn... but it is what it is. Kahn was a beast and easily at Neuer´s level during his prime but for better or worse, Neuer surpasses him in pretty much everything.
@@Ballackx13 Yes but Lehmann played a modern interpretation of the position while Kahn was an oldschool goalkeeper and Neuer modeled his game after Lehmann's. Also Neuer grew up as a Schalke Fan and Lehmann used to play for Schalke. Kahn was still better though and I think it was the wrong decision to let Lehmann play in 2006
As much as I like Kahn Neuer surpassed him and will go down as the greatest goalkeeper of his generation and arguably of all time. The 2000s were dominated by Kahn, Buffon and Casillas and for me they were pretty much on the same level whereas Neuer changed the goalkeeping playing style and won nearly every trophy there is to win along with some legendary performances. However Kahn is the ultimate leader.
@@johnnyedelhoff5866 bro Lehmann didn´t play a modern interpretation at all, lol. he was just another regular goalkeeper if you ask me, also, Lehmann played at Dortmund as well, so as i said, i don´t understand how he became Neuer´s role model lol, especially when he wasn´t half as good as Oliver Kahn was.
@@davinnicode think you underestimate van der Sar. He should be with those names. In my opinion the best goalkeepr ever.
Kahn vs Rivaldo, Cafu, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Ze Roberto.
My boy had no chance. Kahn the legend!
Kahn for sure was the most ferocious Bayern player of that era but he wasn't the only lose canon in their squat: Mario Basler and Stefan Effenberg were also close to madness - rivaled also by Uli Hoeneß sitting on the bench. You may not like this club but FC Hollywood was always entertaining back then.
At one occasion Basler went into a club the night before he had a game, was drunken, punched a woman in the face, chain smoked and scored a goal a couple of hours later. That bayern team was WILD.
Kahn was a different animal though like Michael Jordan. Kahn was obsessed even in practice, his hatred to lose made him choke a team mate and Kung fu attack an opposition player. Another similarity to Jordan is that he is off the pitch soft spoken and shy.

One of my childhood heroes and main reason for becoming Bayern fan. Great video! :)
Exactly same for me!
One city he is probably not fond of is Bucharest. A month before Euro 2004, in a friendly, he conceded 5 goals to Romania in what was one of the biggest disasters for the German national team (they only scored 1). After the game, Kahn's declaration was as blunt as one would expect from him: "They slaughtered us!" - although none of the goals was his fault.
Der Titan. Legend.
He had such good nicknames, loved VolKhano as well
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT can you make this kind of video on Petr Cech please 😀.

Once in a press conference Oliver Kahn was asked about the performance of modern goalkeepers. That was before Manuel Neuer joined Bayern and Kahn was still Bayerns number one. Kahn said regarding young goalkeepers like Neuer "Mistakes are normal and no goalkeeper can play without mistakes these days. The only one who can do that is me. I recently demonstrated that several times." Then he started smiling and told the journalist with a raised index finger "It was just a joke" and allowed them to laugh.
yeah, so hilarious
2002 was my first FIFA which spiked by interest in football
I remember Oliver Kahn brilliant save as kid soon became one of my favorite. I rooted for Germany sadly they lost to Brazil in final
Amazing goal keeper
1.At the 2002 World Cup, Oliver Kahn was the first German player to win the Golden Ball and the Yasin Prize.
2. Bayern Munich won the trophy after being renamed UCL.
3. Oliver Kahn became the first goalkeeper to reach Ballon d'Or's third-place finish for the second consecutive year.
4. He visited Japan, blocked all children's PKs at a PK event organized by a charity, said, "It's natural not to allow a goal in front of my goal," and donated a large check to the donation box.
5. Even in the dark ages of the German national team, Oliver Kahn had such a strong influence that if Oliver Kahn was guarding the goal, it would be enough to score just one goal.
6. Oliver Kahn's 2002 World Cup runner-up would have been impossible without Oliver Kahn. If he had a lot of good colleagues, the results might have changed.
7. Unexpectedly, Oliver Kahn played as the main goalkeeper for the German national team for a very short time.

@@LizudemAm
Yeah, Ronaldo was extremely good and would arguably be the best player in any other competition. But Oliver Kahn was like a wall that year. For a Goalkeeper to single handedly(well, +Klose sometimes in attack) manage his team into the final. It is worth for something. While Brazil was either the favourites or just below Italy and France.
He looked terrific! Like the main villian in a sports manga. Even as a child he was already that kind of grimm
His shot prediction was so good that he's even single handedöy responsable for Germany's top 3 finish in world cup 2006. Even tho he was sidelined for the cup and only played the backup role. When it came to penalty shootings against Argentina Kahn handed Jens Lehmann a paper with all the usual locations where the Argentine players usually place the ball. Lehmann was correct on every ball and stopped multiple. Probably in big part to the paper from Kahn that he took out in between the kicks
Correction: the note came from the goalkeeper coach, and Lehmann could not read it. He cursed "why would he (the coach) had to write it in pencil". Mad Jens guessed correctly on his own, only look at it once or twice, but the notes unsettle the Argentinean players. Accidental mind game.
If you look at the 2002 line up, Germany was never the strongest team but his presence at the back made it possible for them to reach the final.
And it was unexpected
That period was a clown show. I call them the "Jeremis-years". Come on - when a Ballack is the dominant figure...
You know you've got a beast on the goal line when even your own defenders are afraid of him. If he got into competition mode there was no stopping.
But what seperated Kahn from other yelling loud-mouths was that he actually also had the skills to back up his attitude.
One little remark to your video: the 2002 world cup was basically a two man show - it was Kahn who kept the clean sheet and Ballack who somehow made that squad score the goals they needed. But yeah, without Kahn they would've dropped out in the group stage.
Honestly, having Kahn and Buffon on similar scores kind of makes sense to me.
They are both legends - although they had different stlyes. And both really have a history of emotion for the sport and the nation.
While he appeared like an animal on the pitch, I remember him calm and rational off the pitch. He turned into a good commentator on German TV.
My uncle told me once, when Kahn was screeming (and he did that a lot) you could hear him no matter how loud the crowd is in the stadium xD
reflexes should be easily 10/10
10/10 reserved for Buffon.
If I think about a goalkeeper with incredible reflexes, I always think on Kahn.
no, 11/10 lol
i remember 2002 before the last game in the world cup finals.
There was a big Kahn face printet at the first page of a big german newspaper which where be able to wear as a mask.
I think there is nothing more Iconic then this :D
I think the 2002 WC was his absolute peak..His GK displays were quite astounding in what was one of the worst German teams i've witnessed..He was crazy but as a GK they say you need a bit of craziness
2002 WC team wasn't that bad. It got ballack n neuville n klose. Sure it might not be the best, but it sure wasn't the worst
The darkest period of our national team. Kahn and Ballack basically carried us for nearly a decade.

*GOAT* !! and some how very underrated
He was one of the very best footballer of his days...a role model for all goalkeepers
He is the reason I play football and playing as GK!
I was lucky enough to have lived through and constantly watched this long line of incredible German goal keepers; Bodo Illgner, Andreas Köpke, Oliver Kahn, Jens Lehmann, Manuel Neuer, Marc-André ter Stegen (and many more active ones who haven't featured enough for Germany due to the dominance of Manuel Neuer)
oliver kahn is the reason i support germany and bayern my favorite player of all time
For many “ears” he was the best
The interesting thing about the Neuer generation of goalkeepers is that Neuer is probably the better goalkeeper overall, but Manuel Neuer is just a goalkeeper, while Kahn was a goalkeeper AND a true leader.
Personally I like Oliver Kahn more than Manuel Neuer. Neuer is obviously one of if not the best goalkeeper in the world right now (despite his age) but Kahn had many more shots to save - just from my memories. Back then the league was much closer together than it is today, Bayern didn't just dominate opponents and especially the Champions League required A level games every matchday. There was not that huge gap between very good teams and just good teams. Kahn proved often enough that he alone was the reason for many wins, while Neuer is just doing his part most of the time, he's not the one winning the matches by his performance alone anymore as Kahn did it back then.
I mean of course you still have to score, but you'll always manage to score that one crucial goal.
Oliver Kahn stands for an era of football that is long gone but is missed by many. That was before England sold their football to Arabs, Asians and Americans, before they sold their soul. It was before the Spanish clubs had extremely high debts, it was before teams like Kiev were just "one of many to beat", back then they were fierce competitors.
And Oliver Kahn was the one who taught young goalkeepers the excitement of being a goalkeeper, the mentality aspect of being a professional football player and made goalkeeping worth watching.
Neuer however, to finalize that comparison, is the guy for the stats. He has been showing absolute perfection many times but he is not as exciting and game winning as Kahn was.
The voice narrating sounds oddly satisfying with this video saying "a machine, instinct...a predator"
