I am a makeup artist and a paramedic - just so you're aware, 70% alcohol is the cosmetic grade you need to adequately sanitize. Anything higher evaporates too quickly, so it doesn't have the time to penetrate the cell and kill whatever it may be. Just thought you may want to know for future. :)
I don’t normally comment “corrections” on videos, but I just wanted to let everyone know that 70% isopropyl alcohol is a lot better at sterilizing than 90%. The sterilization process from alcohol comes from the evaporating alcohol. The 90% evaporates too fast to have much of a benefit. This isn’t widely known. I feel like Katie would love to have this information because she wants what’s best for everyone.
I remember that now. When the pandemic first happened all I could get was 91% alcohol & I had to add water to it to use as hand sanitizer. Now I just buy the 70% because it's just easier.

Great video! I work with polymer clay and use mineral oil to make clay softer ie. frosting consistency. That makes me worry about having charms in the gloss. Polymer clay is pretty toxic, so I would not want it to break down into something you are putting on your skin and probably ingesting. They looked pretty though!
I was thinking this too. I also highly doubt they can be properly sterilized. From what I've seen Polymer clay is generally not considered food safe and that seems relevant to something that needs to be sterile. Also you get less lip gloss per container!

Hi Katie! I have some experience with the Lorann oils, though not in lip gloss. I've used them in hard candy making which I believe is the intended purpose, especially the ones that come in the tiny glass bottles. They are really concentrated flavors which is great for candy making but maybe not lip gloss. I can see why people would try them in a lip product but I would worry about them being too concentrated and perhaps irritating for some people. I'm sure many people assume that since they're sold in the baking aisle of craft stores and can be eaten that it would be fine to apply to lips but I would be wary.
For sure! Lorann oils are 100% food safe, but not all of them are body safe! I mainly use them for making hard candy as well, but I have used them in bath bombs for friends and although there are some that are safe, do your research on EVERY FLAVOR. For example, Almond is a no, root beer is a no, and cinnamon is an ABSOLUTE no.

They may still be truthful though depending on what the manufacturer does, autoclaved vessels in sealed bags would be the most sterile. Straight lip balm tubes could probably be sterilized using UV light by a larger business. Air drying at room temperature could actually introduce bacterial growth. But if the small businesses don't know for sure then this method is better than nothing. I'm researching at the moment, so I'm just approaching it from a lab standpoint where a single bacterium could mess up your results and a lot of our plastic consumables are pre-sterilized or autoclaved (extreme steam cleaning in a high pressure environment which means they are dry afterwards). Would a run of the mill container manufacturer do this tho...

Beauty Treats USED to make an excellent lip gloss that was lanolin and castor oil. Then they changed the formula to mineral oil. Blech. I need to figure out how to make my own, I don't put petroleum products on my lips. That original formula was both hydrating and healing. It was the best.
As someone with contamination based OCD, I really REALLY appreciate you talking about the sterilization process and how important it is to you!! If I were to buy lipgloss from a small business, it would absolutely be Royalty Soaps!
For my education we have done a lot of laboratory work and the nr. 1 rule is that you can never be too careful with safety. @@JOURNEYIN2THEUNKNOWN I can assure you the one I’m referring to is very popular. I’m not going to name them because it’s not my thing but if cosmetics and supporting small businesses is your preference, definitely keep what Katy said in the back of your mind 🙂
@@bekah4137 yep, I know EXACTLY who you’re talking about. So scary to think how big they are too and still allowed to sell their products how they do! Insane.
Great experiment! I wouldn't recommend using the polymer clay charms. I have alot of experience using clay and it can corrode different plastics. I once had some canes in an old ice cream plastic tub and 2 weeks later the polymer clay had 'melted' a hole through it. It was Fimo soft polymer clay. As cute as they looked, I wouldn't buy a lip product with polymer clay charms inside. Hope this helps xx
That happens because the plasticizer (the stuff that makes clay moldable) in unbaked clay can pass on to certain plastics and make them softer and ‘melted’! It absorbs to the pvc and becomes non-reactive if baked correctly but I do agree with the other concerns of not being able to sanitize them completely, plastics leaching back out over years, not knowing how the manufacturers cured the clay, etc
Other than the clay itself used to make the cute little charms, you also have to think about the stuff that were used to color them which might be a whole different can of worms. So yeah, too much variables that might cause unknowns so better just not having them there. (Its not like they serve any other purpose than being aesthetic anyway)
A pipette taped to the end of your syringe helps to fill tubes. And leave about an inch from the top of the tube when filling, it leaves enough room for the applicator to fit in. I don't use a versa gel I make my own lip stick base and turn it in to a gloss. I also use FD&C batch certified lakes for coloring...
This is why I kind of side-eye a lot of those tiktok small businesses. They're making lipgloss in their bedrooms and putting lord knows what into them lol
Katie, your channel is such a safe space for me. Your content is so uplifting and joyful that no matter what is happening in my life, I can find reprieve in your videos. I’ve been following the channel silently for years but I really want you to know how much of an impact you make on my life 💖 thank you, Katie, from the bottom of my heart 🥰
Your dedication to safety really keeps me coming back, and seeing this video was no different! You're amazing and if you were to ever add lipgloss to your store I'd buy it right along side your soaps! (my whole family is a huge fan of you now, we've been buying for a few years now. Two of us have skin problems and your soaps are so gentle on us while also being super fun and we can't thank you enough for that!)
I love that you helped educate people on the dangers and red flags of buying cosmetics when not in a sterile lab. I actually been so confused on who is buying products someone makes at home… esp when they post content about how they make this stuff and you see how little they care about sterilization/don’t wear hair nets/caps/gloves and casually eat/drink around the products they are creating.
I would definately buy Royalty Gloss to go with my Royalty Soap. Espessaly since Katy always does such a wonderful job of letting us know what she's putting in her products. The trasperancey from people like her is why I choose them over bigger brands. Most just don't care enough to make me feel safe putting their products on my skin or my families skin. With most soaps, if I wash my face with them I break out and get really dry skin. Not with Royalty Soaps. Thank you Katey for your wanderful porducts and you wonderful personality. You always make my day just a little brighter.

I loved this so much. I’ve been eyeing TKB’s gloss fixins for over a year. Got heavily into making my own nail polish, and love their products and the way they label what’s been approved for what usage. I was also weirdly excited to see you use steramine tablets. I use steramine solution at home as a laundry additive and for kitchen cleaning.
@@msjkramey tkb trading has what you need for basics of nail polish making!! they have polish bases and some colorants and micas. if you want to add glitters etc to it, it also involves months of testing to make sure your polish is good and the glitter didnt melt or strip off into the polish. you can never be too sure ugh
As a lipgloss business myself I love the video! it shows should hygiene is super duper important. I see some people mentioning how the lip-gloss business can be unhygienic which is true, I produce all my glosses in a completely different room and kitchen.
The flavor oils are super concentrated. I would be very worried that I would get to much and burn the heck out of my lips, thinking about the cinnamon oil specifically. The flavor oils are for chocolate and food things.
I love cinnamon, but I’ve used cinnamon toothpaste in the past. Everywhere on me the toothpaste touched turned red in reaction. So no more of that flavor for me. 😕
I used to teach this about 25 years ago. Glad to see it's catching on again. It's fun and easy! And about the safety concerns, bravo! Most people don't realize how easy it is for products to get contaminated, and that they should throw out most makeup after six months because of potential bacterial and fungal growth.
Ooooh, Katie! Watch Caitlin Blue's video about her experience using that filling machine before you use it for that. I believe the cleaning of it is intense. 🙃 Great video! Thanks so much!
I’m not sure about the sterilization tablets that you purchased but when I worked in food service, you washed, rinsed, then sterilized. Item had to be submerged for 1 minute then let air dry-not rinsed again. The solution evaporates like rubbing alcohol does and that’s what actually kills the germs. Like I said, not sure about the tabs that you purchased but may be worth looking into for the future if you use them again. ☺️ I do love watching your videos and how much you strive to save us from ourselves 😁
I love your videos Katie. Have watched you for years now. I really enjoy seeing you try different things. I find your soap videos so relaxing and calming You are a gift to the world
At 5:22 - fun fact about sanitizing with rubbing alcohol! It’s counterintuitive, but 70% actually sanitizes better than 90%. This is because some water molecules need to be present in order for the alcohol to penetrate bacterial cell membranes. When I was taking microbiology, we always disinfected our lab benches with 70% alcohol for this reason.
I really love how much research you've put into this, and honestly I'd love to hear a video about more of the guidelines and legalities surrounding the manufacture of cosmetics and soaps. Some of the nitty gritty bits of this industry would be fun to hear about in detail!
Love this so much! I could honestly also watch the long cut of this where we sed each color and flavor for each blend and your thoughts in long format.
When I made my own lip glosses, I taped the end of a pipe the to the syringe and it worked like a dream…I used versagel and it was one sticky mess to clean up. I’ll check out TKB when I want to do it again…my best seller was a rosy beige! thanks Katie for playing with new stuffs!
Great video, love the content - started watching back in 2020 because your videos are so calming, its almost like watching an episode of the Great British Bake Off. Regardless, as a dude - I'd love a lip balm, if you made a more neutral color/scented option!
I love love love that you went over the sterilization process and gave the spill about it all… TikTok’s and quick videos give me the creeps thinking about putting that on my lips 🤢
Katie, You are an absolutely AMAZING PERSON 👏!!!! I am always soooo happy to hear your explanations about safety, laws, regulations, and being transparent with your products. Too many tutorials ((I know this video was not a tutorial)) never touch the safety aspect. Which leaves me with the yucks about the health risks the crafters expose themselves, their family, and their friends and consumers to. Thanks for always looking out for others. Now, I think I may need to go to buy some lip gloss supplies... Not to sell... just for me.
I absolutely love your videos and how seriously you take safety procedures! I would love to see lip gloss from you in the future! Please always continue to be such a genuinely amazing person!❤️
I would love it if you could somehow create lip gloss flavors and color combos based on your most popular soaps from your website and maybe figure out a way to make them smell similar to the actual soaps, if possible. I think that would be a fun idea because then people could have a lip safe match to the soap that they order! 🙂
I think a lot of people would be interested in you selling the lip gloss you make once you're at the stage you want to be at. I definitely would be. It would be awesome to see what colors or inspiration (very extra glitter!) You would come up with.
I very much needed Katie's enthusiasm and light this morning. It helps more than I can put into words. I know she doesn't personally handle the comments anymore, but I still want to say thank you
I won a giveaway for a lipgloss kit you gave away several years ago, it was so much fun and I got chance to use it with my kids so it's really cool to see you making your own 💄
I think it would be fun if you had lipgloss that matched your soap themes! You could even make it a vote where say the top 3 choices would be made into a lipgloss. 💋
I can tell you that the LorAnn flavouring oils are sold for use in food like chocolates and candies, etc. They are highly concentrated compared to a flavour extract (like vanilla or almond extracts) and are oil based so they can be used in chocolate without causing it to seize, which water or alcohol based flavours will do. So they are definitely safe for your lips since they are intended to be consumed, but I know nothing about how they would interact with cosmetics ingredients. I know with food it takes very little to get the flavour and it’s very easy to overdo it with those bottles. I’m a home baker, but I’ve taken some baking, cake decorating, and chocolate workshops.
Katie, thank you for being you. Joyful, humble and grateful. I've been watching for a long time and your videos are always bringing me much needed relaxation and joy. Although I never made a single bar of soap in my life. So just a simple thank you for everything that you do :)
do it do it do it.... I would love to have lip glosses from you, because you seem to have the brain and respect for safety, AND you have such an artistic eye, I think what you could offer would be not only pleasing, but creative, as well :)
Hey darlin, totally appreciate your cleanliness & just to save you some time should you decide to do this in the future Steramine is a no rinse sterilizer. They're actually completely nontoxic so the company says you don't even need gloves or goggles when using it & it can be used around pets & children BUT considering these little glosses will be used around people's mouths plus skin is very sensitive sometimes I don't blame you wanting to be extra safe
This was very fun to watch, and I really enjoyed your sense of humour on this one! When you kept saying over and over you weren't selling them, I KNEW you would say you were considering it!! Too funny and very predictable Katie Carson!! 😂 😂 😂

This balm really feels like nothing once it warms up to body temperature. I use it on new tattoos, too.
Even though this is not for cosmetics, any kind of lab work or manufacturing process should take these necessary precautions for everyone's benefits. Glad to hear you talk about them! Stay safe everyone :D
I really, really appreciate watching the sterilizing. It just makes me so safe and comfy even though I'm not purchasing a product.
Thank you for the disclaimers and safety information, I will pay attention to these in the future.
Reminded me of a particular creator so I went to look and so many of her warnings were there 🫣
@@bekah4137 I've watched SO many lip gloss makers and none have what she said to look out for
@@JOURNEYIN2THEUNKNOWN I can assure you the one I’m referring to is very popular.
I just want to say Caleb has been killing it with the editing! Adding fun little things here and there. Just killing it friend.
We need a tutorial on Katie’s amazing space buns!! Love the zigzag part 😆❤️
Can’t get over how dang cute your hair is in this video
This was a great reminder of best practices. Also, thank you for trying to get varying shades of lips and the acknowledgment. It means a lot. 🥰
Yessss! Please offer lip glosses in your shop! Im sure with your never ending creativity, you’ll come up with some awesome colors!
I'm really happy about how safety conscious this video is ☺️
I would definately buy Royalty Gloss to go with my Royalty Soap. You always make my day just a little brighter.
ooo you can wash your face with her soap and your face skin is fine? i have to try!
microbiology student here- I am so excited about the sterilization and researching and documentation! it tickles my happy nerd brain 😂 this was so much fun to watch and I love you having fun with it! can’t wait for the next thing! ❤
I love hearing you reiterate that this is not a tutorial, but still adhering to proper safety standards. Never change, Katie 💜 it really goes a long way towards keeping people safe just to witness
I never thought about how those charms in lipgloss could be unsafe. Great video, very eye opening!
Yes! I would love it if you offered lipgloss you are truly such a great human! Love love love watching you
100% would buy a Royalty Soaps brand lip gloss. You do so much research and really care about what you’re producing.
Your disclaimer @20:31 and the editing made me laugh so hard. I love your attitude and energy!!
And good places to start to get info on making nail polish? I didn't even know that was something you could do at home
I would absolutely buy lip gloss from you! I’d love to see them in your shop! They look so awesome.
Literally dying at how much you say you’re not selling them, knowing we’d all hop on you for them if you didn’t. 😂❤
Ooooh, Katie! Watch Caitlin Blue's video about her experience using that filling machine before you use it for that. I believe the cleaning of it is intense. 🙃
Great video!
Whenever I see videos of people making lipgloss I always think about how much you would enjoy doing this!
Omg that was so fun to watch I love how you treated it like a science experiment
I love your videos Katie. Have watched you for years now.
I really enjoy seeing you try different things.
I find your soap videos so relaxing and calming
You are a gift to the world
At 5:22 - fun fact about sanitizing with rubbing alcohol! It’s counterintuitive, but 70% actually sanitizes better than 90%. This is because some water molecules need to be present in order for the alcohol to penetrate bacterial cell membranes. When I was taking microbiology, we always disinfected our lab benches with 70% alcohol for this reason.
Omg you should definitely seriously consider selling lipgloss! I would buy every shade!
I was today years old when I found out that those fuzzy diagonal-tipped lip gloss wands have a name. Learn something new every day!
I really love how much research you've put into this, and honestly I'd love to hear a video about more of the guidelines and legalities surrounding the manufacture of cosmetics and soaps. Some of the nitty gritty bits of this industry would be fun to hear about in detail!
Never change Katie! Never mind that you aren't going to sell them... You are a good example to anyone who wants to own a small business. Well done!
the idea of royalty soaps branching out into other products is honestly such an exciting notion to me!!
I’ve been watching you for years and today I was finally able to place my first order!!! I can not wait.
Oh my God I thought she was gonna goof around with a kiddy DIY kit but ya girl got super scientific about everything, I love it!
Love this so much! I could honestly also watch the long cut of this where we sed each color and flavor for each blend and your thoughts in long format.
This was such an interesting video. Thank you for taking safety seriously.
If you do decide to sell the lip glosses. I would totally buy them from you. Plus they would make great little stocking stuffers for the Holidays.
You know it will be an extra good video when you see the double hair buns!
I would LOVE if Royalty Soaps sold lip gloss!
Thank you for that gigantic, thorough disclaimer, Katie! Keep doing what you do!
I really LOVE seeing these videos about you trying all the things besides your soap making videos! Please keep them comming!
I love how Katie is getting into all the beauty and fragrance categories
I work in manufacturing and I really appreciate your precautions! That’s exactly what I wear at work plus gloves and booties☺️
Love your hair Katie! You rock the double bun!
I ❤️ your focus on safety!
So I live in Lansing mi where lorann oils is. We use those mostly for hard candy making but they are edibles so it shouldn't be bad in lip gloss
Thank you for always looking out for everyone and for being so fun. I really like your videos.
I love how you are always so safe with your products. I've saw someone make soap with not gloves or any safety clothes on
Always love your videos, but I especially love these types of videos! Also loving the darker hair! 😁
I'd definitely buy lipgloss from Royalty Soaps, especially if it was as glittery as the one you made in the video
I love your hairstyle at the beginning of this video! It looks very cute and i fits you nocely!
You're a doll and this was just plain fun to watch. Thank you!
You selling lip gloss?! YES PLEASE! I would totally buy it if you made them
This was fun to watch! I've no call to make gloss myself but gosh dang this was an adventure!
Hey Katie, I'm so happy you put up this tutorial. It'll really help my small business (I'm kidding, honest)
I would love to see you add lip glosses!
I love the PSA's!! Katie is amazing! Always keeping people safe!
This was very fun to watch, and I really enjoyed your sense of humour on this one! When you kept saying over and over you weren't selling them, I KNEW you would say you were considering it!! Too funny and very predictable Katie Carson!! 😂 😂 😂
katie doing the most to educate us and still keeping us entertained! This is why I love you and your channel and sometimes it's shocking to see the view to like ratio..you deserve so much more
